Dollmaking Techniques

- through pictures * Head & Face *

1 Materials
:Above;Glue for craft(it becomes clear later)/Excelsior(wood wool)
:Under;white cotton fabric / white stretch cotton fabric
/ skin colored stretch cotton fabric / cotton / button for eyes(6mm) / wires
2 Place the head pattern on the white cotten fabric and trace,
sew leaving the top open. Cut it taking 6mm(1/4") seam allowance.

3 Turn it right side out.


4 Stuff the excelsior in it very tightly and firmly.
Cut some thick wire and put it inside the neck.
5 Stitch around the top and pull up tightly.
6 Spread some cotton, Cut 3 pieces(1 small, 2 large) by hand.
7 Put some excelsior on the center of each pieces.
8 Roll one of the large (for a cheek bone) and small one (for the chin)
Wrap the other large one (for forehead).
9 Stitch and fix these pieces on the head (from chin, cheek, forehead).
10 Cut wires and make form for nose and lips.
11 Make holes in the face,
Push (10)wires into the holes putting some glue at the point.
12 Nose is the center, lips are between the chin and cheek bone.
13 Cut some cotton and white stretch cotton fabric.
14 Cover the head with cotten, and place the stretch cotton over it.
At the back, tie up with thread and cut the excess fabrics off.
Stitch to make the head form good.
15 Put buttons as eyeballs pulling them by thread for the back.
Make cotton balls for cheeks and chin.
16 Fix cheeks and a chin on the face with glue.
17 Cover the face with cotton.
18 Cover it again with a white stretch cotton.
Take care pulling not to make some creases.
19 Cut off the excess fabrics and stitch like the picture.
20 Stitch to make hollow places.
21 Both sides of the eyes and lips are like this.
22 Make a hole to the body and put some glue in it,
Push the neck and Fix the head.
23 Prepare skin colored stretch cotton, glue and brush.
24 Using a brush, give a coat of glue to the face .
25 Cover the face with stretch cotton, stick firmly
using a needle for yarn(round point one), and make nostrils.
26 Stitch the back of the head same as (18,19)
Draw eyes, eyebrow and lips with color pencils.(later, paint them again)
27 The back.
28 The front.

1 Trace the hand's pattern on the thin paper, put the stretch cotton between them.
2 Sew along the seam lines with a sewing machine.
3 Take the papers off.
4 Cut off around them leaving minimum allowance.
5 Turn them right side out.
6 Prepare some cotton, wire and pliers.
7 Wind some cotton around the wire. Make 10 for fingers.
8 Form like a hand and fix the wrist with thread.
9 Sew the arms and turn. Put(8) through the arms.
Sew and pull around the wrists, fix with glue.
10 Stuff excelsior in it firmly.
11 Put some cotton around the fingers to make hands.
12 Make small cotton balls and fix them at the elbows with glue.
(It is no need when the doll has long sleeve dress on.)
13 Put cotton around arms a little.
14 Cover them with (5) like gloves.

* Foot *

1 Sew the legs leaving the toes open.


2 Sew the toes.
3 Put a thick wire into a leg and stuff excelsior into it tightly.
4 Cut wires and wind cotton around them to make foot-fingers.
5 Make holes, push the wire into it putting some glue.
6 Feet bases.
7 Put some cotton around fingers to form.
8 Put cotton around legs a little.
9 Same as a hand, trace the pattern for toes on a thin paper.
Place stretch cotton between the papers.
10 Sew with a sewing machine.
11 Take the papers off.
12 Cut the excess fabrics like the picture.
13 Turn it right side out, cover the legs with it.
Pulling them not to make some creases, pin and cut off the excess fabrics .

14 Sew it like the picture.


15 Stitch between fingers to make toes good.
16 Finished.
