Was Viola Desmond a hero?

By the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:


Retell the story and jumble the sequence of events
Realize that Viola Desmond was a hero because s
stood up for what she believed for.

Materials:

22 students (whole class)

Retelling worksheets
iPad for the book.

Subject Competency:
C1: To read and listen to literary, popular and information-based texts.
o Students will be working on this competency by listening to the story that the teacher is readi

to the class.
C2: To write self-expressive, narrative and information based texts.
o Students will be working on this competency by writing a response text about the book that w
are going to read in class.
C3: To represent his/her literacy in different media.
o Students will be working on this competency by following a production process in order to
communicate with a specific audience.

Cross Curricular Competencies:

Communicates well.
o Students will be working on this competency by expressing their feelings and opinions by
using the correct vocabulary and correct grammar.

Time

5 minutes

Lesson

Introduction:
Say Good morning boys and girls which will prompt the students to clear
their desks and put their belongings away.
Invite students to story time.
Ask students to remind you of the circle time rules.
Set expectations and rules for the story time.

Development:
Start reading the story.
Show student the cover page. Ask students what they think the story is goi
to be about. Ask students if they know what budged means.

35 45 minutes.

Explain the meaning of the word budged


Throughout the story, ask questions about the story.
o What do you think is going to happen next?
o Do you think that Viola is a hero?
Explain the definitions of a couple of words in the story that the students
might not understand.
After reading the book, ask the students if they enjoyed the book.
o Which part of the story did you like?
o Which part of the story did you dislike?
Ask students to go back to their seats.
Distribute the worksheets and explain the instructions to the students.
Explain to the students that the written portion of the worksheet should be
written in full sentences.

Tasks:
Students will have to complete the worksheet provided to them. They will
working on their retelling skills and will have to answer to an opinion
question.

students are too
rowdy and
distracted?)

If the students are being too rowdy, I will send them back to their seats. Th
students who have been sent back to their seat and who still continue to
disrupt the class will have Dojo points taken away. If the same students
continue to be disruptive, I will ask for their agendas and their will be a no
sent home to the parents.

Differentiation:

I will differentiate this lesson by walking over to Tims desk and by helpin
him with the reading portion of the worksheet. I will also be watching Anto
to make sure that she is on task and that she followed the instructions
correctly.

Assessment:

This assessment will be done formatively. I will be collecting these


worksheets and make sure that the students

1. The story is all mixed up. Use numbers 1 to 5 to re-organize the
story, 1 being the first event and 5 being the last event.
