Livelihood condition of our family:

We started the game with 2 acres of land, 1 in-milk cow, 1 dry cow and 300 rupees cash. We
had 2 adults and one child. We were self-sufficient with manual labor for farming the land
with our human resources but we required bullock power units (BPU) from other households.
A small portion of milk for human consumption was also required to be bought from others.
The cash on hand was not sufficient for buying the seeds and BPU's. Hence we had to take
loan from the bank.
Learning from the game:
The farmers life is greatly dependent on factors that is not under his control like the
monsoon and pest attack. The coping strategies for these calamities require cash. Hence the
marginal farmers are forced into debts. Sharing of agricultural facilities helps to a certain
extend. The government schemes available like MNREGA is of immense help to the
marginal farmers.
It is a good practice to analyze if we will be able to meet our requirements from the assets
given to us. If there is a necessity to take a loan, we should take a loan with a huge amount in

the first game itself as the loan interest rate increases as the game progresses. It is also a good
practice to pay back the loan as soon as possible.
Vulnerability and coping strategies: The farmers are vulnerable to monsoons and pest
attack. Coping strategy for a drought condition would be to analyze the meteorological
forecast and plan for irrigation facilities. The marginal farmers can go for a shared irrigation
facility.
In the case of a pest attack, we can make use of pesticides. Even this does not enhance the
yield to the full productivity limit. In the case of a severe pest attack, the farmer is completely
helpless. Since the whole village is effected, the yield overall will also be less and hence the
option from buying from others is also not possible.
Improvement required in the game: As per the rules of the game, when a severe pest attack
is announced, even the pesticides will not enhance the yield. We had used pesticides in a
severe pest attack situation which was just a waste of money. Hence, a pop up message
should be given while pesticides are being applied to the farm mentioning that "Pesticides
don't have any effect on the yield during a severe pest attack condition".
