Safety
All safety rules defined above and all owner/employer safety rules must be
strictly followed when working on the belt cleaner.
Materials required
Only standard hand tools are required to install and service this equipment.
Introduction
Introduction
Before Installation
WARNING
WARNING
IMPORTANT
Read entire section before beginning work.
To install the belt cleaner, follow the procedures corresponding to the
following steps:
1. Locate belt cleaner on chute walls.
2. Install mount brackets and mainframe assembly (inside or outside chute
walls).
3. Install MARTIN SAF-2 Cover Door (if using).
Locating belt
cleaner on chute
walls
1. Determine whether belt cleaner will be mounted onto outside chute walls
or inside chute walls.
IMPORTANT
Make sure blades contact belt where there is adequate support
and where blades wont lay back so far that material will build
up on them. If necessary, install belt support directly above
blade-to-belt contact point.
2. Determine where you want blades to contact belt and mark point on
outside or inside chute wall, as applicable. Do not mount in path of
material flow. Make sure belt is adequately supported at blade-to-belt
contact point. Install belt support if necessary.
3. Find pulley center point.
4. See Figure 2, diagram A and perform the following steps:
a. Mark a line perpendicular to belt through the blade-to-belt contact
point determined in step 2. (If blades contact belt on face of head
pulley, line should intersect pulley center point.)
b. Mark another line that is 10 from the perpendicular line (as shown)
and intersects the blade-to-belt contact point.
c. Draw a line parallel to the line drawn in step 4.b and 3-7/8 in.
(100 mm) in the direction of return belt travel.
d. Center mount bracket over this line against the chute wall. Position the
mount bracket so the discharge-side edge is parallel with the line
marked in step 4.a, and the top mounting slot is between 3-3/4 and
7-1/4 in. (95 and 185 mm) from the belt. (4-1/2 in. [115 mm] is
recommended.)
e. Using mount bracket as template, mark two mounting hole locations
on the line on the chute wall (at 6-in. [152-mm] centers). Mark outline
of mount bracket on chute wall.

Urethane blades
IMPORTANT
If using urethane blades (P/N 38230-UXX), both sizes of gauge
blade must be used to ensure correct tension. If using
tungsten-carbide blades, only the taller gauge blade
(P/N 33845-01X) is needed for proper tension.
1. Remove wire lock pins (B, Figure 3) from bottom of rods (C).
2. Alternate turning rods in operator side and far side Clamp Mounts until
MARTIN SAF-2 Urethane 3-inch Blades just touch belt.
IMPORTANT
If using Stainless Steel Clamp Mounts (P/N 34000-SS), turn
rods until MARTIN SAF-2 Urethane 3-inch Blades just
touch belt. Tension rods two full turns or until gauge blades
just touch belt. Push tips of MARTIN SAF-2 Urethane
3-inch Blades back as you tension. (Gauge blades will be
undeflected when correctly tensioned.)
IMPORTANT
If tensioning for the first time, inside gauge blades on both
sides of mainframe should barely touch belt. Once MARTIN
SAF-2 Urethane 3-inch Blades have worn even with inside
gauge blades, reset tension so outside gauge blades barely
touch belt and inside gauge blades are pushed back.
3. Make sure outside gauge blades are undeflected.
Tungsten-carbide blades
1. Remove wire lock pins (B, Figure 3) from bottom of rods (C).
2. Alternate turning rods in operator side and far side Clamp Mounts until
MARTIN SAF-2 Urethane 3-inch Blades just touch belt.
IMPORTANT
If using Stainless Steel Clamp Mounts (P/N 34000-SS), turn
rods until belt cleaner blades just touch belt between cleats
and start conveyor.
1. Remove wire lock pins (B, Figure 3) from bottom of rods (C). Alternate
turning rods until blades lightly touch raised cleats on belt.
NOTE
If cleat pattern is less than 1/4-in. (6-mm) high, tension belt
cleaner a full 1/4 in. (6 mm), or approximately one-and-onequarter turns, against belt.
2. Measure depth of cleats in belt. Adjust blades additional amount so tips
of blades lightly touch belt between cleats.
IMPORTANT
If tensioning for the first time, inside gauge blades on both
sides of mainframe should barely touch belt between cleats.
Once MARTIN SAF-2 Urethane 3-inch Blades have worn
even with inside gauge blades, reset tension so outside gauge
blades barely touch belt between cleats.
3. Make sure outside gauge blades are undeflected.

WARNING
Before adjusting belt cleaner, turn off and lock out/tag out
energy source to conveyor belt and conveyor accessories
according to ANSI standards (see References).
6. After 1 hour of operation, turn off and lock out/tag out energy source
according to ANSI standards (see References).
7. Make sure all fasteners are tight. Tighten if necessary.
8. Inspect belt cleaner for wear. (A small amount of break-in wear may be
found. This will stop once blades wear to conveyor belt contour.)
9. If excessive wear or some other problem exists, see
Troubleshooting/Installation Checklist.
10
NOTE
Maintenance inspection should be performed no less than
weekly. Your application may require more frequent
maintenance inspections.
IMPORTANT
Read entire section before beginning work.
!
WARNING
Before servicing belt cleaner, turn off and lock out/tag out
energy source to conveyor belt and conveyor accessories
according to ANSI standards (see References).
1. Turn off and lock out/tag out energy source according to ANSI Standards
(see References).
2. Remove any material from belt cleaner.
3. Make sure all fasteners are tight. Tighten if necessary.
4. Check belt cleaner for proper alignment (see Figure 6). Compare
MARTIN SAF-2 Urethane 3-inch Blades angle to gauge blades. If
MARTIN SAF-2 Urethane 3-inch Blades have moved forward so they
are in line with inside gauge blades, re-tension belt cleaner until outside
gauge blades touch belt.
5. Check blades for wear. If blades are worn past point where belt cleaner
can be re-adjusted to compensate for wear, replace blades as follows:
a. Release mainframe from clamp on operator side only. Lower blades
from belt.

NOTE
Conveyor equipment such as conveyor belt cleaners are
subject to a wide variety of bulk materials characteristics and
often have to perform under extreme operating or
environmental conditions. It is not possible to predict all
circumstances that may require troubleshooting. Contact
Martin Engineering or a representative if you are
experiencing problems other than those listed in the
Troubleshooting chart above. Do not return the equipment
to operation until the problem has been identified and
