MAIN DECK CARGO DOOR - COMPONENT LOCATION INTERIOR

Components on the Inside of the Door
The lock actuator is located on the aft side of the door.
The two lift mechanisms are near the upper forward and the upper aft corners of
the cargo door.
The four rotary actuators are near the upper forward and upper aft corners.
The lift power unit is near the top center part of the cargo door.
The latch/hook power unit is on the lower part of the door, near the center.
The latch mechanism goes from the latch/hook power unit to the pull-in hooks,
mid-span latch, and latch cams.
Two pull-in hooks are at the forward and aft edges of the door.
Twelve latch cams are near the bottom of the door.
The lock mechanism goes from the lock actuator to the lock sectors. The lock
sectors are on the twelve latch cams at the bottom of the door. The mechanism
also goes to the two vent doors.
The graphic does not show the location of the proximity sensors that do control
functions. Their locations are shown at the component level.
General Description
This section describes the function of the components on the inside of the door
as the door goes from the fully open position to the closed, latched, and locked
position.
The motor in the lift power unit supplies the torque to move the door. The torque
goes through the drive shafts to the rotary actuators. The torque from the rotary
actuators goes to the lift mechanism. The lift mechanism raises or lowers the
door.

Electric power shifts from the lift power unit to the latch/hook power unit when a
proximity sensor senses the door is completely lowered. Torque goes from the
latch/hook power unit to the pull-in hooks. The pull-in hooks around the pull-in
pins on the door cutout move to pull the door into the latch position.
After the door is pulled in, torque goes from the latch/hook power unit to all the
latch cams. The cams turn around the latch pins latching the door. When a
proximity sensor senses the door is latched, electric power is removed from the
power unit.
The lock actuator on the door interior moves to the lock position. This locks the
door. The lock action causes these actions to occur:
- Lock mechanism locks the main latch cams at the
bottom of the door
- Lock mechanism holds the vent doors closed.

MAIN DECK CARGO DOOR - ROTARY ACTUATOR

Purpose
The four rotary actuators transmit torque from the lift power unit torque tubes to
the door lift mechanisms.
Physical Description
The actuator has these parts:
- Coupling (to the lift drive mechanism)
- Three planetary gear stages (internal)
- Vibration damper (internal)
- No-back brake (internal).
Functional Description
The gears of the actuator decrease the rotation rate from the lift power unit. The
coupling transmits torque into the lift mechanism.
The no-back brake inside each actuator stops door movement in either direction
when you remove power from the lift power unit.
Training Information Point
The vibration damper stops the loud vibration noise that comes from the main
deck cargo door lift system when closing the cargo door.
The loud vibration noise is due to a change in the manufacturing process of the
rotary actuator. When closing the cargo door, a vibration starts by the
alternate lock and unlock of the brake disks in the rotary actuators. This makes
a vibration. The vibration is transmitted through the torque tubes and makes a
loud noise. This loud noise does not mean there is damage. It does not cause
bad door operation.

Close and Latch Operation

Move the CLOSE switch to the closed position. The blue door open light on the
P100 panel goes off when the door leaves the full up position.
Continue to hold the switch in the closed position. The door goes to full down
position. Then it latches and the door closed light on the P100 panel comes on.
Lock Operation
Hold the LOCK switch to the lock position. Make sure that the vent doors close.
The door is locked if the vent doors are closed and the green locked light on the
P100 panel is on.

MAIN DECK CARGO DOOR - FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

General
The main deck cargo door is operated electrically with the unlock/lock switch
and the open/close switch on the P100 panel. The P100 panel is located in the
crew entry doorway. Indicator lights provide status information
to the door operator.
When the door is fully open or closed, proximity sensors remove power from the
actuators.
Opening Electrical Operation
Here is the list of events that open the main cargo door when it is closed,
latched, and locked:
When the door is closed, latched, and locked, the three green CLOSED,
LATCHED, and LOCKED lights will be on and the two blue OPENED and
UNLOCKED lights will be off (P100).
When the UNLOCK/LOCK switch is moved to the UNLOCK position, 115vac is
supplied to the lock actuator through the lock enable sensor. The lock actuator
retracts which turns the lock torque tube. Rotation of the lock torque tube turns
the twelve lock sectors freeing the latch cams for rotation. As the lock sector
moves away from the door locked warning sensor, the MAIN CARGO DOOR
caution level message will appear on EICAS. Linkage from the lock torque tube
turns the vent door torque tube opening the vent doors and relieving
compartment pressure before the door is opened. As the aft vent door moves
away from the fully closed position, the door locked control sensor causes the
door LOCKED light to turn off.
When the lock sectors are fully retracted, the unlatch control sensor and the
door unlocked control sensor provide control power to the latch/hook power
drive unit through the energized latch relay circuit.
When the OPEN/CLOSE switch is moved to the OPEN position, 115vac is
supplied to the latch/hook power drive unit through the energized latch relay.
The latch/hook power drive unit turns to rotate the latch/hook torque tubes.
When the torque tube turns away from the latched position, the latched control

sensor opens. The latched control sensor, the door down control sensor, and
the door unlocked control sensor continue to energize the latch relay. The relay
stays energized until the latch/hook torque tube moves to the unlatched position
and the door down control sensor indicates the door is not down. Because the
latch relay stays energized until the door unlatches and moves from the down
position, you can reverse the latch operation of the door at any point thereafter.
When the latch mechanism rotates from the latched position, the lock enable
control sensor will toggle and prevent power to the lock actuator. As the pull-in
hooks rotate from the latched position, the door will move outboard and open
the door closed control and warning sensors. The door latched control sensor
will also open. The open door closed sensor will cause the door CLOSED light
to go off (P100). The opendoor latched sensor will cause the door LATCHED light
to go off (P100).
When the latch mechanism reaches the unlatched position, the unlatch sensor
closes. The closed unlatched control sensor de-energizes the unlatch side
of the latch relay. The closed unlatch sensor and the open door control sensor
energize the hinge up relay, providing 115vac power to the lift power drive unit.
The door down sensor opens as the lift arms of the rotary actuators move away
from the door down control sensor. The open door down sensor de-energizes
the latch side of the latch relay and removes power from the latch/hook actuator.
The open door down sensor and the closed unlatched sensor energize the
hinge down relay and enable door operation to be reversed. During the door
opening cycle, the brake unit of the gearbox and brake assembly ratchets freely,
offering no resistance to door movement.
When the door reaches the full up position, the door open sensor closes to
remove power from the lift power drive unit. The closed door open sensor also
turns on the door OPEN light (P100). The hinge down relay stays energized as
long as the door is not down and is unlatched. This allows you to close the door
at any point during the opening operation.
Note:

If one rotary actuator arm leads the other as the door opens, the
leading arm will contact its upstop. Slip clutches in the power unit
will allow the lagging arm to contiue to drive until its sensor shuts
off power to the power unit.

MAIN DECK CARGO DOOR - FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

(CONTD)
Closing Electrical Operation
Beginning with the main deck cargo door fully open, here is the list of events to
close the door:
When the control switch is placed in the CLOSE position, power is provided
through the energized hinge down control relay to the lift power drive unit to
close the door. As the door moves away from the full up position, the door up
sensor opens to energize the hinge up control relay. This will permit door
operation to be reversed at any time. The door OPEN light (P100) will go off
when the door open sensor opens.
During the door closing cycle, the pawls of the gearbox and brake assemblies
engage ratchet teeth on the brake housing to prevent rotation. This forces the
lift power drive unit to drive against slipping brake disks to close to door. This
equalizes the power required to open and close the door, and ensures that the
door will remain in position if power is lost or a failure occurs.
When the pull-in hooks contact the hook pins on door closing, door movement is
stopped, but the lift power drive unit contiues to operate until the door down
sensor closes. This energizes the latch side of the latch relay. Overtravel of the
lift mechanism is provided by slip-joints in the lift links. After door movement is
stopped, rotation of the rotary actuator lift arm causes the lift links to extend at
the lift slip joints.
If the latch cams are not in the fully open position as the door closes, flanges on
the mid-span latch cams contact the latch pins and hold the door open to
prevent engagement of the hooks with the hook pins. The lift mechanism will
continue to operate because of the slip-joint in the rotary actuator lift links, and
the hooks will rotate to the closed position even though the hooks do not
engage the pull-inhook pins.
The closed door down sensor will remove power from the lift power drive at the
de-energized hinge down relay. Power is supplied to the latch/hook actuator
through the latch relay. The latch/hook actuator will turn the latch hook torque
tube, which then turns the pull-in hooks to pull the door flush with the fuselage.
As the latch/hook torque tube rotates from the unlatched position, the unlatch
side of the latch relay energizes to permit door operation to be reversed at any

time. As the pull-in hooks close the door, the lift links are compressed at the slipjoint to a point within the limits of slip to unload the link. As the hooks pull the
door to the fully closed position, the main latch cams and mid-span latch cams
turn to engage the latch pins and latch cams to hold the door closed. When the
door is flush with the fuselage, the door closed sensor is closed and the door
CLOSED light on the P100 will come on. When the latch/hook torque tube turns
to the latched position, the latch side of of the latch relay is de-energized and
power is removed from the latch/hook actuator. The lock enable control sensor
is also closed to allow power to the lock actuator when the UNLOCK/LOCK
switch is moved to the LOCK position.
The closed door latched sensor will send a signal to turn the door LATCHED
light on (P100).
When the UNLOCK/LOCK switch is moved to the LOCK position, the lock
sectors extend to block the latch cams to lock them closed. As the lock sectors
extend, the door unlock sensor opens to prevent electrical unlatching and
opening of the door.
When the vent doors turn and close to the fully closed position, the door locked
sensor closes to turn on the door LOCKED light on the P100.
The door warning system gets signals from the door closed, the door latched,
and the door locked sensors. When the door is closed, latched, and locked, the
MAIN CARGO DOOR caution message does not show on EICAS.

Components on the Inside of the Door
The two lift mechanisms are near the upper forward and the upper aft corners of
the cargo door.
The two rotary actuators are near the upper forward and upper aft corners.
The lift power unit is near the top forward part of the cargo door.
The latch/hook power unit is on the lower part of the door, near the center.
The latch mechanism goes from the latch/hook power unit to the pull-in hooks
and latch cams.
Two pull-in hooks are at the forward and aft edges of the door.
Twelve latch cams are near the bottom of the door.
The lock mechanism goes from the latch/lock handle to the lock sectors on the
twelve latch cams at the bottom of the door. The mechanism also goes to the
two vent doors.
The latch/lock handle is forward of the door in the fuselage.
The graphic does not the show the location of the proximity sensors that do
control functions.
The torque goes from the
rotary actuators to the lift mechanism. The lift mechanism raises or lowers the
door.

Electric power shifts from the lift power unit to the latch/hook power unit when a
proximity sensor senses the door completely lowered. Torque goes from the
latch/hook power unit to the pull-in hooks. Movement of the pull-in hooks around
the pull-in pins on the door cutout pulls the door into the latch position.
After the door is pulled in, torque goes from the latch/hook power unit to all the
latch cams. The cams turn around the latch pins. This latches the door. When
a proximity sensor senses the door latches, it removes electric power from the
power unit.
Movement of the latch/lock handle on the fuselage to the lock position, locks the
door. The lock action causes these actions to occur:
- Lock mechanism locks the main latch cams at the
bottom of the door
- Lock mechanism holds the vent doors closed.

LOWER CARGO DOOR - FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

General
Sensors on the door give inputs to the proximity
sensors electronics unit (PSEU). The PSEU uses the
inputs to turn on the door position indication lights,
on the p43 panel, and enable door control relays.
The relays supply three-phase power to the power units
on the door. The phase configuration controls whether
the power unit opens or closes the door.
Unlock and Unlatch
A full open door lock handle enables door operation.
The PSEU uses inputs from the handle unlocked sensor,
the door latch range, and door unlatched sensor to
enable the door latch relay. The relay configures the
power phases to unlatch the door.
Lift Movement
The PSEU uses input from the door unlatched sensor and
door open sensor to enable the hinge up relay. The
relay configures the power phases so the lift power
unit moves the door up. The PSEU uses input from the
door up relay to turn on the door open light, on the p43
panel, and enable the cargo handling system.
Lower Movement
The PSEU uses input from these components:
- Door unlatch sensor
- Door latch range
- Door handle open sensors.

These components enable the hinge down relay. The relay

configures the power phases so the lift power unit
lowers the door.

The PSEU uses input from the door open sensor to turn
off the door open light, on the p43 panel.
The PSEU uses input from the latch range sensor to open
the hinge down relay.
Latch and Lock
The PSEU uses input from these components:
- Latch range sensor
- Door handle open sensor
- Door latched sensor.
These components enable the door latch relay. The relay
configures the power phases so the latch power unit
pulls in and latches the door. The PSEU uses inputs
from the door handle open sensor and the door latched
sensor to open the door latch relay.
The PSEU uses inputs from the door handle open sensor
and the door unlatched sensor to turn on the door
closed light, on the p43 panel.

BULK CARGO DOOR SYSTEM - OPERATION

Operation - Door Open
You can use either the internal or external handle to unlatch the door. To use the
external handle, pull the handle outboard until you can turn it. To use the
internal handle, it is only necessary to turn it.
When the door is unlatched, the operating mechanism supplies the force to
open the door. The snubber controls the rate at which the door opens. The door
rotates inward and upward on the hinge arms.
When the door is fully open, put the hold-open strap around the lower, aft door
stop.
Operation - Door Close
To close the door, release the hold-open strap. Pull or push the door down. Turn
the handle to the unlatch position to ensure the latch cams are in the proper
position. Close the door. Turn the handle to the latch position. The door is
latched and locked.
If you use the external handle, make sure the handle goes inboard to the fair
position when you close the door.

DOOR WARNING SYSTEM - INDICATIONS

General
The EICAS display (on P2) and the annunciator panel (on P5) show door
indications.
EICAS Display
Advisory and caution information shows on the EICAS display.
Advisory or caution messages show for each door that is not in the closed and
locked position. The large cargo doors have a caution message. The other
doors have advisory messages. A single message shows when only one door
of that type and location is not closed or locked. If two or more doors of that type
are not closed or locked, the EICAS message changes to the type of door.
The door annunciator panel has these three groups:
- Entry doors
- Cargo doors
- Access doors.
Any door not closed or not locked causes the annunciator light to come on.
