byMikhailBotvinnik.Hisfirstnotableresultinamajortournamentwashisgoldmedalwinasfirstreserve
fortheRussianteaminthe1992ChessOlympiadinManila.Hisselectionfortheteamcausedsome
controversyinRussiaatthetime,ashewasonlysixteenyearsoldandhadnotyetbeenawardedthe

WorldChampionshipwithNigelShort,hecreatedariftinthechessworld.Inresponse,FIDEsanctioneda
matchbetweenAnatolyKarpovandJanTimmanfortheFIDEWorldChampionship,whichKarpovwon.
Subsequently,thechessworldhadseentwo"champions":the"classical"championship,claiminglineage
datingbacktoSteinitzandtheFIDEendorsedchampion.
WhenKramnikdefeatedKasparovandinheritedKasparov'stitle,healsoinheritedsomecontroversies.
BecausethearrangementsfortheKasparovShirovmatchfellthrough,(itappearsShirovrefusedtoplayfor
whatheconsideredtoosmallaprizefund[6])Kasparovdecidedtotrytoarrangeamatchwiththehighest

Kramnikrefusedtoplaythefifthgameunlesstheoriginalconditionsagreedforthematchwereadheredto.
Asaresult,thepointwasawardedtoTopalov,reducingKramnik'sleadto32.Kramnikstatedthatthe
appealscommitteewasbiasedanddemandedthatitbereplaced.Asaconditiontocontinuethematch,
Kramnikinsistedonplayingtheremaininggamesundertheoriginalconditionsofthematchcontract,
whichallowsuseofthebathroomattheplayers'discretion.
ThecontroversyresultedinaheavyvolumeofcorrespondencetoChessbaseandotherpublications.The
