EVENTS
AND SCORING
TESTING TIMES
As Formula Student aims to develop well-rounded
engineers, each team is assessed not only on their cars
performance and their understanding of the engineering
behind their design, but on their overall business
proposal. This is done in a series of static and dynamic
events.
STATIC EVENTS
Design 150 points
Students must be able to explain how their cars materials, components and systems come together and how
their design meets the needs of the intended market.
Business Presentation 75 points
In this event, the judges play the role of the potential
investors. Each team has to present a business case that
sells their concept to them.
Cost and Sustainability 100 points
Here teams provide an accurate estimate of the cost of
their car in a limited production. They should be able to
show the judges where theyve spent money and added
value. They are also required to understand how much
energy is required to produce their powertrain.

DYNAMIC EVENTS
Before being allowed out on to the track to compete in
any of the dynamic events, the teams must first pass
technical and safety scrutineering, as well as the tilt,
brake and noise tests. There are five dynamic events,
all designed to test different aspects of the cars performance an important part of any teams business case.

We are Edith Cowan University
Racing from Perth, and this will be
our first time competing outside of
Australia.
For our latest car we have made a
large conceptual leap from previous
cars with some key features being
a custom 600cc in-line four cylinder
engine with an integrated 2 speed
gearbox and a gear driven final drive
and spool, direct acting dampers,
rear beam axle, single piece wheel/
hubs and a full monocoque chassis.

Monash Motorsport is based at
Monash University in Melbourne,
Australia. The team has competed
in FSAE since 2000 with a strong
belief in the importance of early
testing and a heavy focus on
aerodynamics. Monash Motorsport
uses a point simulator to justify
all design decisions. The point
simulator uses parameters such
as grip coefficient, power and
downforce to benchmark the
capabilities of our concept against
the competition. Our latest concept,
the M13, is a competition proven,
clean-sheet design. To increase
the points scoring potential over
our previous concepts, several
changes have been made to the

TUW-Racing was founded in
2007 and the EDGE MK1 was the
first racing car of our young and
motivated team. Every year we
set our goals high to continue
our innovative design and to stay
competitive.
We are, for example, the only
team worldwide who successfully
implemented a carbon fibre space
frame in our EDGE 2 and EDGE
3 racer. All five previously built
were motorised by a one cylinder
KTM engine, which was also
supercharged in some models.
This year we will again compete
against other universities at

Formula Group T consists of 22
master students in Industrial
Engineering Sciences at the
University of Leuven, Campus
Group T, Belgium. This will be our
third car, called June and several
improvements have been made to
increase the performance, handling
and efficiency.
In comparison to last year, we have
achieved 20% in weight reduction.
June will have the first monocoque
we have ever built, which is the
first Belgian monocoque as well.
The pedals are adjustable and also
the 3D printed steering wheel, with
integrated pedals, will giving more
comfort to the driver.

For 2014 we are introducing our 7th
car - a refined version of our FS013
racecar, featuring the same Aprilia
V2 550cc engine, body and slightly
modified chassis. This year we have
made our first aeropackage on the
car, aiming to increase our corner
speeds. The focus of this car are
the wings, driver ergonomics and
electrical components to allow the
car to challenge the other teams
in Europe. Dozens of students
have worked on this project on the
design, material testing and various
manufacturing tasks.
Thanks to our sponsors and school
we have been able to produce
a more refined and tested car

For our first edition, the aim was
to succeed in conceiving and
building a Formula Student car

Silverstone event, and creating our
own legacy at ECP. We are divided
into six groups according to system/

The ENIM Formula Student
Team was founded in 2009 by
seven engineering students. This
year, we have designed our fifth
Formula Student car and we are
participating at Silverstone for the
fifth time. Since 2012, we have had a
single cylinder engine and we have
optimised engine performance by
modifying the intake and exhaust.
This years focus was improving the
reliability of the car.
Besides that, we have developed
some lightweight pieces to reduce
weight. We have included a data
acquisition system to work on the
vehicle dynamics and correlate our
Adams/Car model.

The ISAT Formula Team was
created 10 years ago. The school is
the only public school specialised in
automotive and transport in France.
The Formula Student project is part
of our curriculum in the third year,
having one day per week dedicated
to the project. This year our main
objective is mass reduction,
which is why we changed our 13
inch wheels to 10 inch wheels to
reduce weight by 10kg. It was
also an opportunity to modify the
suspension geometry to correct last
years faults. We have also worked
on fuel consumption thanks to the
tests held on our engine test bench.

The TU Darmstadt Racing Team
(DART Racing) is now participating
in FS UK for the sixth time. Around
30 highly motivated students from
various fields of study are working
on this years car, the iota2014. By
creating a completely new chassis
and suspension, we decided to
take the know-how from last year`s
electrical powertrain and start with
a new model.
We have set our focus on a twomotor concept, in order to apply
self-designed torque vectoring. The
main components of our drivetrain
will be self-designed motors, each
providing power to one wheel each
at the rear axle.

the defining features introduced in
the RS 13 and further improved on
them to create our most innovative
car yet.

Innovation meets Tradition - if
you look at Zwickaus automotive
history you can easily find out why
we picked this slogan for our team.
Zwickau is the birth place of Horch

the home of the Auto Union race
cars which dominated the race
tracks in Europe.
Almost 70 years later our WHZ
Racing Team was founded. Now in
2014, we bring our fifth full electric
car to the track. The FP814e is a
further development of last years
successful car, concentrating
on lightweight packaging and

Since JUST Formula Student team
was established only recently and
lacks the experience in designing
and building racing cars, it was
decided from the beginning to keep
the design as simple as possible.
Relying on the principles of basic
race car design without any frills,
the car was designed with a
spaceframe chassis in compliance
with FS regulations. The design of
the car was accomplished with a
small team, so some items had to
be bought rather than designed and
manufactured by the team.

simulations and our previous
experience, we have come up
with a lightweight full aero car.
A lot of work was completed on
suspension, aerodynamics, chassis

The suspension aims to make the
car more responsive and balanced
in corners. Front and rear wings
provide almost three times more
downforce than in our previous
years model and the aero-balance is
in tune with suspension balance.

New year, new team members and
most importantly a new car. For
the seventh year in a row, Clear
River Racing, while representing
Karlstad University, has built a race
car which is to compete in Formula

The CRR14 race car has been
designed with two main aspects
in mind, the first being cheap
manufacture adapted for the
production of smaller volumes.
The second aspect is sustainability,
and as a result, glass fibre is used
instead of carbon fibre for many
parts of the body. Another outcome
of the sustainability mindset is a

KTH Formula Student was
founded in 2003 by Dr. Fredrik

KTH. Today, the project is entirely
governed by volunteer students,
with a team of 32 ambitious
and dedicated members. Were
proud to have students from all
educational backgrounds at KTH.
With almost half of our members
in exchange programs, were
also an international team. When
designing the ev11, we targeted
reliability and medium-to-high
performance. Simple designs and
manufacturability were also of high
priority, as we aimed to produce
80% of the vehicle in-house.
The key performance targets,
such as weight/power ratio and
downforce, were derived from

The AMZ Racing team was founded
in 2006 by students from the ETH
Zurich and Hochschule Luzern as
the first and only Formula Student
team from Switzerland.
After competing for three years
with combustion cars, the team
decided to switch to an electrical
driven car in 2010. In 2011 the first
self developed motors were used
and since then have been a special
attribute of our cars, improving
every year to produce the current
AMZ M4.

The newest car, the DUT14, can
be described as an extremely
lightweight four-wheel drive electric
car enhanced with aerodynamic
devices, a slip ratio controller
and a yaw rate controller. All four
motors are placed inside the wheels

This experience created our design
philosophy: Design, Analyze,

objective was to create a consistent

we can make some mass reductions

manufacturability, increased
accessibility and innovative design
solutions. An optimised intake
and exhaust system allows the
Aprilia SXV 550 V-twin to maintain
previous power and torque, however
deliver more reliable power with
greater efficiency. A complete
overhaul of the cooling system has
incorporated a revised radiator
and new sidepod. The power is
transmitted via a student-designed
aluminium differential that has
proved faster than a spool in backto-back testing. New suspension
systems provide a modest mass
reduction and an improved
geometry over previous vehicles.

The Fastrada Motorsport Formula
Student Team from Karel de Grote
Univeristy College has taken a new
approach on the environmentally
friendly race car by choosing a hybrid
drivetrain. We believe in hybrid, by
combining the performance of an
electric motor with a combustion
engine powered by an eco-friendly
fuel to extend the driving range.
Through extensive interdisciplinary
collaboration with students of various
departments (Masters electronics,
electro-mechanics, automotive and
Bachelors automotive technology, IT,
photography and more) our design
is approached from many different
point of views, resulting in an
improved quality of work.

In May 2013 a group of young
engineering students decided to
build a team to compete in Formula
Student 2014 and be the official team
of Zagazig University.
Our plan is to spread the idea of race
car design and building at institutes
as well as automotive companies.
This will build links between
students, professors and
businessmen as we believe this
is the missing link regarding the
Egyptian Automotive Industry.

UoP Racing is the Formula Student team of
the University of Patras, Greece. The Class
2 team consists of new team members
who have designed and developed the
next UoP racecar, UoP5e. Evolving from
last years car, UoP5e takes the next
step by incorporating twin AC motors
which will allow the team to fully exploit
the benefits of electric drive by using
torque vectoring in order to aid yaw
acceleration and transient stability. Torque
is transmitted through a self-designed
two-stage gearbox to 10 rear wheels.
A simulation-based sensitivity analysis
highlighted the areas that would render
the biggest laptime improvements, namely
aerodynamics and a low centre of gravity.
Thus, the team moved the batteries on
both sides of the chassis, significally
lowering the CG. A self-developed
distributed BMS continuously monitors
the accumulator temperature and voltage,
which was raised to 600V to reduce
resistive losses and increase efficiency.
Improved manufacturing techniques and
layout, as well as a careful redesign allows
for about 20% lower chassis weight, while
maintaining the same torsional stiffness.

University of bath

For our Class 2 entry this year, Team
Bath Racing have designed a next
generation of a single seat racing car.
The car features a full carbon-fibre
monocoque and turbocharged single
cylinder engine running on biofuel.
We have designed the car to be
eficient, responsive and lightweight
to achieve optimal performance in
dynamic Formula Student events.
The forced induction system gives
the engine a substantial power
to weight ratio whilst also aiding
fuel consumption. To optimise this
package, E85 - a blend of ethanol
and gasoline, has been used. To
further enhance performance an
aerodynamics, our package provides
up to 800N of down force at 60kph.
To achieve this ambitious design we
started building the car in October,
which allowed for contingency and
extensive testing time, ensuring
Team Bath Racing are fully prepared
for FS2014.

This years team comprises
of students from a variety of
engineering disciplines across all
years of undergraduate study.
What we all share is that we are
completely new to the Formula
Student scene. When the team was
formed last October, many of us had
absolutely no knowledge of racing
car design. Our car is a sidewinder,
meaning the engine is packaged to
one side of the driver, rather than
behind.
This unorthodox layout has
challenged us to think outside the
box with our designs, and helped
rapidly improve our understanding of
what is needed to build a successful
racing car.

UH Racing is historically and
currently the highest ranked British
Formula Student team.
Our Universitys reputation for
engineering will drive us to push new
technologies to their limits so we can
continue to succeed in the future.
This years Class 2 team will see the
re-introduction of an electric powered
car, aided by a technical partnership
with YASA motors.
Our car will also be featuring
revolutionary aerodynamic features,
whilst still adhering to the Business
Logic Cases demands.

University of manChester

The University of Manchester 2014
team comprises entirely of voluntary
engineering students. The 2013/2014
academic year also included the
introduction of the development of
a new and innovative knowledge
transfer system which the team has
been hard at work implementing.
Entering the 2014 competition with
a Class 2 car has been a decision
made with the cars reliability and
end result in mind. Our sponsor
Essar have supported us throughout
the year in various ways, including
providing assistance with our
business presentation. Ultimately,
the goals for the car have been to
meet our internal design objectives.
By reducing excess weight from
the chassis and suspension, the
team intends to reduce the cars
kerb weight to under 200kg. Other
major goals include unsprung mass
reduction through the use of carbon
fibre wishbones and redesigned
uprights. The 2004 Yamaha YZF-R6
engine is selected for its longer stroke
as the rpm is limited.

AWARDS
CEREMONY
University of warwiCK
uK
This year, we had the ambitious
goal of radically redesigning the
Warwick Racing car to incorporate an
electric powertrain for the first time.
After starting off with a completely
blank slate, we methodically
narrowed down the options in
order to focus on four main targets:
reliability, efficiency, robustness and
sustainability.
We cooperated closely with
Warwicks IC team, experts in power
electronics and battery technology
at Warwick Manufacturing Group
(WMG) and key sponsors such as
Catapult, National Instruments,
Enerdel and Infineon.
The team believes passionately in
the potential of electric vehicles, and
is proud to contribute towards this
sustainable vision.
