Welcome
Thanks to everyone who helped make R&S happen this year. Please take good care of
each other and our weekend home at Fishers Paradise. Big thanks to Chris & Julie and to
all our neighbours for sharing their neck of the woods with us.
R&S is all about loving and enjoying and being part of the beauty of it all. Real life is not
always conducive to this - I hope this weekend makes you all happy. I hope that happiness
is so abundant here that R&S can spill over into your otherwise life. It is so simple but yet
hard to do.
Admit it. You arent like them. Youre not even close. You may occasionally dress yourself
up as one of them, watch the same mindless television shows as they do, maybe even
eat the same fast food sometimes. But it seems that the more you try to fit in, the more
you feel like an outsider, watching the normal people as they go about their automatic
existences. For every time you say club passwords like Have a nice day and Weathers
awful today, eh?, you yearn inside to say forbidden things like Tell me something that
makes you cry or What do you think dj vu is for?. Face it, you even want to talk to that
girl in the elevator. But what if that girl in the elevator, and the balding man who walks past
your cubicle at work, are thinking the same thing? Who knows what you might learn from
taking a chance on conversation with a stranger? Everyone carries a piece of the puzzle.
Nobody comes into your life by mere coincidence. Trust your instincts. Do the unexpected.
Find the others. - Timothy Leary
Thanks for helping me find you.
Be kind and the world will change.

Begin anywhere. Words from the late American experimental composer John Cage
that kick-started the Anywhere Creator Space last winter in Sudbury. Anywhere houses a
collaborative workplace for makers of all kinds - from textile artists to game developers
to welders - to begin creating. The Anywhere crew has teamed up with their friends from
the Toronto computer art wizard collective, Camp Cult, who have joined them in taking
their love of transformation to R&S spaces, including outhouses, pathways, and stage
projections.
HEART WORKS
Wonder who made that giant jellyfish, tied kites to trees, flew festival
flags, or fashioned that people-sized bird nest for lounging? Blame
it on a HeARt Works collective Ashlyne Botelho, Paula Johnson,
Jamie Lee, Staci Duhaime, Dan Landry-Altman, Megan Clymer,
Ashley Hanson and Jessica Raymond.
Crafters
These artist-crafters have brought their makings to show and sell.
Christine Charette is one-of-a-kind designer and textile artist who specializes in silk screen

breakfast with sausages, oats and fresh berries. If youre an R&S member, flash your
wristband and enjoy breakfast on us. Weve got your caffeine covered too with iced tea,
iced coffee, and pressed coffee using St Josephs Island roasted beans. Later in the day,
weve teamed up with some of your favourite local restaurants to offer fusion wood fired

homemade scones, tacos and scone dogs, with vegan and vegetarian options.
WHERE CAN I WASH MY BODY? If you want to freshen up, go for a swim and sauna. But
dont use soap or shampoo with phosphates in the river! Think biodegradable soap.
IS THIS A BYOB FESTIVAL? Open alcohol at campsite is OK. No open alcohol (walking with
beer can) outside campsites please. No glass!
WHERES THE CLOSEST PLACE TO STOCK UP? Turn left as you leave the property and
9 kms will take you to the LCBO in River Valley. River Valley also has a chip stand and a
Family Restaurant/bluegrass bar. Or turn right, and about 6 kms will take you to Fields
LCBO in its general store. You can buy cake at the store too!
WHAT DO I DO WITH MY GARBAGE? Look to sort your stash before you trash. If you could
take your garbage with you, thatd be great. Your empties go toward keeping R&S rolling.
HEY, ARE THOSE MOSQUITOES? Welcome to North Ontario! The witching hour comes just
as darkness falls. Prepare with some bug dope, long sleeves & pants. FYI Mosquitos like
dark colours and do not respect black tights. Light colours are best.
CAN I HOOT AND HOWL AT 3 A.M. IN THE FAMILY CAMPING ZONE? Please dont. Children
and parents need their sleep. Gentle strumming by the campfire only. The Beach is a good
place to let off steam by dancing it up with the late night bands.
BULLS EYE BITE? If you have a bulls-eye shaped bite or other strange rash from a bite
get it checked out at the Nurse Right Now station. Better yet, wear light coloured pants
tucked into socks and long sleeves with DEET bug repellent to protect from ticks and
other bugs. If bitten, never squeeze a tick, but pull out slowly near head with tweezers
(saving it for identification) or better yet get one of our medical people to do it. Slosh area
with rubbing alcohol.
As the frontman of both Apollo Ghosts and COOL TV, Adrian Teacher is
known as one of Vancouvers most prolific and loveable songwriters.

his triumphant return to the festival, this time bringing along a cast of some
of Canadas best musicians to back up his homegrown, underdog musings.
Shotgun J. has been a good friend to R&S since Day 1 back in 2009.
After 10 years circling the Earth and captained by Stephen McBean, B.C.s
Black Mountain hippie collective has fashioned a psychedelic rock powered
spaceship to land on the Sturgeon River. A Polaris finalist, Juno nominee,
Amazons Top 100 Editors Picks ... and they have their own army!
Songs about waffles, refusing to cat sit for your mom, and spending
your GST cheque at Giant Tiger B.A. turns lemons into no-name brand
lemonade. Congrats on baby B.A., born during last years R&S!
Bird City is a sweet tenor banjo combo brought to life by Jenny Mitchell.
R&S fans will also remember her as Jenny Omnichord. Jenny is also
lending her voice to the Puppet Making Workshop.

OUR VISION
Our vision is to become a leader, early adopter and innovator in presenting the Arts
Sustainably.
OUR MISSION
To present regional, national and international emerging indie, folk and roots music while
showcasing a community-based, simple and sustainable way of life.
Our second Development Campout for emerging regional musicians, made possible by
donations from A&M Remediation as well as SOCAN, took place the weekend before the
festival with Shotgun Jimmie and April Aliermo (Phdre & Hooded Fang) mentoring. This
session focused on helping young bands with their first gigs.
Youll also find bands at our Annual General Meeting, fundraisers like Bowling on the
River, Earth Day, and other unlikely events like cob ovens builds. Music makes us happy
and we want to bring it into all aspects of our work and play.
This year we shored up some past projects repairing the cob ovens, building a deck and
improvements to our sauna, and sewing a cover for the yurt made from poles harvested
on site and skinned by many. Weve also built a walk-in refrigerator from a trailer donated
by A&M Remediation. Anywhere Space lent a hand in screening our upcycled t-shirts. And
big thanks to Northern Lights Festival Boreal who lent us dishes for our artist hospitality
area the first step in getting rid of disposable dishes at the festival.
Thanks a Bunch!
