The
Feast of Carols silver anniversary
Choir celebrates 25 years of music
Chelsea Downey
Assitant Editor
As the 25th Anniversary of the Bryan High Choirs annual Feast of
Carols show opened on Thursday night to a sold-out crowd, the actors were
both excited and nervous.
TheFeastistraditoinallyoneoftheChoirsmostproftableandwell-
turned out shows, and it also starts off concert season, followed by a musical-
LittleShopofHorrosthisyear-andthenthebigfnaleofShowstoppers.
Senior Andy Hurley was the Juggler at the Saturday night performance and
spent most of his preptime memorizing a one-page monologue among other
rushed preparations for the show.
We missed some of the stages of development because we were kind of crunched for time, Hurley
said,andthereweresomestagesthatwejusthadtowaitandfndoutwhathappenswhenweperform.
Hurley was excited about the few, simple changes to the show this year, including the attendance of former
choir directors, John Hornbeck and Julie Birkner all four nights.
One of the lines, which is normally given to a student, which is Let the feast begin, was given to John
Hornbeck, the original director, or I guess the oldest living director of Bryan High Choir and he began the Feast
this year, Hurley said.
Senior Austin Hart, the Thursday and Friday night Juggler, said that the choir was doing some songs that were a
little different and out of the ordinary ensuring audience enjoyment, a plus for Hart as Interacting with the guests
was his favorite part of the Feast.
Senior Ashley Moore- triple casted as a maid, Maude, and Prudence- said that the hardest part of her pre-Show prepa-
ration was for her on-stage acting role.
It was kind of hard developing the char-
acter because the script was very sparse,
Moore said, but taking this very simple
character and making her what she is was a lot
of fun and worth the work.
As a director relatively unfamiliar with the
Feast process, Mr. Medlock had a choice of
whether to keep a working formula or start over
from scratch with the show.
The approach that I took with the Feast was the
same as the past, Mr. Medlock said, its an amaz-
ing program and my philosophy with that is that if its
notbroke,donttrytofxit.
The Feast of Carols ran through Sunday, December
7th and featured a short play in the Blue Large Au-
ditorium and then segued to a Medieval-themed feast
uplifted by Christmas songs sung by the mixed Choirs.

ols held at the beginning of December.

Dear Santa, or should I say Dad?

First of all, thanks for last years laptop and digital camera, they will be extremely useful next
year in college. This year I simply ask for these things:
1) New brakes and window tinting for my truck so that I dont crash and die or go blind and crash and die.
2) A new pair of Skull Candies because my stupid dog chewed up my last pair.
3) The best book series in the world, Twilight, so I have a reason to lock myself in my room and not clean
I mean think of Edward all day.
4) Another pair of Chucks because I inherited your fat-footedness and they come in every color.
5) This may seem impossible, but couldnt we put out the nativity set that Mom has been bugging you about
for years??

6) Andwho can forget the priceless good times with friends and family?

SantaDad, thanks for everything & I hope Im on the nice list!

Dear Santa,
I have finally found who I was always meant to be. This will take
some extra help from the Big Man in Red. To become a
completely psychedelic dude, however I need a few new things:
a lava lamp, sea monkeys, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots,
The Beatles Abbey Road Album, a tin Beatles lunchbox,
Etch-a-sketch, The Game of Life, a new Tie- Dye Shirt,
new bell bottom jeans (extra flare), an orange 1969
Volkswagen Beetle, Go-Go Boots, a Troll Doll, but
only the blue haired one please, a peace sign
necklace, and a mini skirt
Peace Man

1969
Dear Santa,
I would like to discuss some issues about your ethics.
Dont take it personally, but I dont believe in this whole
Christmas scheme you have going on. You play games
with these kids, brainwashing them into believing youre
some sort of bearer of gifts; I know a girl who believed in
you until the 6th grade! Its sick, Kris Kringle-if thats
even your real name. I swear I remember seeing you on an
Austin Powers movie. Maybe thats what you are; an actor
hired by Hollywood. Nah. Youre probably some old guy
in Switzerland trying to become a gazilllionare off this
Christmas hoax; Bill Gates wouldnt be too happy.
If its true that you have some sort of sweatshop in the
North Pole, many people wouldnt be happy either. You
treat those elves like Willy Wonka treats his Oompa Loom-
pas. They better be make at least minimum wage or the
gift of happiness. No Santa, I dont accept that.
I hope you dont have Ernie Keebler and the Keebler
Co. working for you. I would hate to see them fall under
your dictatorship.
Now Im not from PETA, but I am concerned for the
reindeers health. I dont think dragging around a 2-cubic
ton man on a sled is good for the reindeers backs. Oh, and
this method of getting into our house is preposterous. I
dont want you crashing through my roof with your bag
full of goodies. You would be no better than the Kool-
Aid man busting through peoples drywall screaming Oh
Yeah!
An- other part of your scheme is getting kids
to make you cookies. Its amusing to
imagine seeing you devour the cookies
like the cookie monster, but if youre
going to eat cookies all night, you
might as well make that sled of yours
into a treadmill. Youre not all bad
though Santa, you bring a lot of joy
for Christmas. I just hope your sled
runs on hydrogen rather than joy
(it would be more fuel efficient).

Sincerely,
David Godinez

The guys opened their season dominating Katy Tay-
lor 62-14 and currently hold a 3-0 record. The coach
and wrestlers have high hopes for this season.
If we stay where we are at and people can meet
the weight classes we should defnitely put up another
district title, Coach Zito said.
Zito grew up wrestling and has been coaching the
team for fourteen years.
I wrestled at Ohio State for 2 years until my knee
decided to do no more, Zito said.
The coach is defnitely well quailifed and has been
a benfactor to the individuals he has coached as well
as the team.
My goal is to put up a regional banner, we have
gotten really close over the past couple of years, we
have the best team over all, Zito said.
The guys swept Seven Lakes and Cy-Creek where
Logan Meekma made a pin against his Cy-Creek op-
ponent in the 112 lb. division leading him to a 3-0
record.
Meekma says even though wrestling is thought
of primarily as an individual sport, the team aspect
comes into play in the dual matches.
Along with Meekma, Coach Zito recognizes the im-
portance of the team facet of the sport.
We spend a lot of time together. You kind of be-
come a very tight nip family and we are together 3-4
hours a day and on weekends we are together 15-16
hours every weekend, Zito said.
While many wrestlers have made pins already this
season, the skill hasnt come easy for most. Wrestling
is a huge time commitment.
If you miss practice you might miss something
like a new move taught or you just might lose some
energy that day. So you have to pretty much be at all
the practices.
With practice comes a full season of competetion.
Matches are every week either Wednesday or
Thursday and on weekends you have tournaments,
Meekma said.
Like most sports, wrestling requires commitment
and dedication, but most of the guys manage to fnd
some time for themselves.
It does not take up that much of my time, I do a lot of
different things, Meekma said.
The next home match is December 20th. Viking
wrestling will be hosting the Annual Doc Hess Clas-
sic, so come out and support the guys as they continue
to have a great season.

Bryan High soccer season is just be-
ginning but senior Joana Vega already
had an experience of a life-time when
she tried out for the Mexican Nation-
al Soccer League. She was one of the
youngest girls at the tryouts.
I really wasnt nervous, not until the
night before, Vega said.
At age seventeen, Joana has only
been playing soccer for a short time but
her talent exceeds her experience.
I started [playing] in eighth grade so
this will be my ffth year, Vega said.
Making the team may seem like it
would mean the world to a high school
student but she did not view not making
the team as a dissapoinment.
No harm done, it would just be an
experience in my life, Vega siad.
Although it would be an accomplish-
ment only dreamed about by most suc-
cessful athletes, Vega aspires to accom-
plish other goals as well.
I really want to go on to college for
my career and go to A&M and try to
make it with the Aggie Soccer Team,
which is amazing, she said.
Head soccer coach Aminadab Delga-
do took notice of the rising soccer star
at a very early point.
When she came in she had some
good skills and some good ball control,
but she was not built like an athlete,
Delgado said.
Her talent, however, gained her a pos-
tion on the varsity team as a freshman.
We compensate[d] for the ftness and
conditioning with her soccer skills and
within a year to a year and a half, she
was showing a lot of improvement,
Delgado said.
While the coach admits he has had
many successful athletes in his coach-
ing career, this may be his most promi-
nent.
I have had athletes go onto the col-
lege level before but never an athlete go
and try out for a national team, Del-
gado said.
Delgado played a key role in the pro-
cess.
Vega said he talked to the national
trainer and told her about the tryouts.
Due to UIL regulations one on one
coaching was limited.
UIL rules dont allow me to practice
with her after school, Delgado said.
In may cases an achievement like this
could spark animosity on a team, but
the girls actually came together to help
out their teammate.
A lot of the soccer girls stayed and
practiced with her after school and
worked with her on shooting and pass-
ing drills so she could get extra time
with the ball, Delgado said.
The additional help from her coaches
and teammates helped Joana earn her
spot practicing with the Mexican Na-
tional Team.
Practices are held year round
leading up to the Champion-
ship.
Currently, Vega travels
to Mexico City where
the practices are
held.
The coach se-
lects the roster
at the end of
the season and
those players
part i ci pat e
in the Cham-
pionship.
No mat-
ter what the
outcome of
Vegas soc-
cer career
may be, she
will always

cess story
to her team,
school, and
town.

The Chirstmas season has arrived and
the holiday spirit is in the air.
As everyone puts up Christmas lights
and they start making holiday plans,
I always enjoy kicking off Christmas
with a good seasonal movie.
My all time favorite holiday movie
is How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
However cheezy that may appear; oh
well.
The begining of the the movie shows
the humorous way the Whoville babies
come about by falling from the sky in
baskets.
It explains how the lonely, lost Grinch
grew up and he wasnt exactly normal
to start off with. When he reaches his
elementary school and falls in love with
the perfect Martha May Who.
When he is rejected, his hatred and
demise explodes and he runs away to
the top of the mountain and begins his
life with his dog Max. Max is his obie-
dient, very expressive, dog who stays
with the Grinch. He is adorable.
Then they introduce the darling Cin-
dy Lou Who who is trying to fgure out
what the true meaning of Christmas is.
When she fnally fnds a soft spot in
the Grinch, she convinces him to come
to a party. After the feast made with the
various puddings and desserts shoved
in his face, he was humiliated.
Once the Grinch realized the true in-
tensions of this party he made his dra-
matic and angry exit.
And of course you cant forget when
the Grinch goes mad and steals all of
the presents using his poor little dog as
a reindeer to tote all of the presents up
a mountain.
Feeling betrayed and ashamed of
the towns behavior Cindy goes to the
mountain to apologize.
This movie, of course, shows the
possibilty that anyone can become
lovable; they only need a chance.
As cliche as this movie seems and
how its highly unlikely you have a
green furry man living up a mountain
near by, it is still my favorite Christ-
mas movie because it is simple yet hi-
larious, and shows the true spirit of
christmas.

Acceptable show of dazzling in vampire love story
Chelsea Downey
Assistant editor
Are there enough girls here?
This amused and annoyed comment from a random
guy at Cinemark Theater late Thursday night on Nov.
20th roughly summed up the craziness that was the
midnight showing of Twilight.
In case you have been tuning
out the world around you, Twi-
light (PG-13) is based on the
bestselling novel of the same
name by Stephenie Meyer.
With a series total of 4 books,
Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse
and Breaking Dawn chronicling
the love story of Bella Swan, an
average mortal 17-year-old and
the beautiful Edward Cullen.
True love all aroundbut
Edward has a particular diet,
because hes a vampire.
Basic Facts: Bella loves Ed-
ward, Edward loves Bella, but
Edward wants to drink Bellas
blood. Nothing personal, she
just smells really, really, really
good to him.
Edward, Alice, and Emmett
are the Cullens adopted by Dr. Carlisle Cullen and his
wife Esme along with Rosalie and Jasper Hale.
All vampires, but with a Meyer-specifc twist: they
dont drink human blood. They jokingly call them-
selves vegetarians as they only consume animal
blood while hunting in the forests surrounding the
ever-rainy little town of Forks, Washington.
The movie attempted to capture the magic of this
400+ page novel in a 2 hour flm, with mixed re-
sults.
Kristen Stewart (Bella) and
Robert Pattinson (Edward)
head the ensemble of rela-
tively unknown, yet luckily
quite talented cast of the teen
romance.
An unexpected knock-out
performance was that of Bel-
las gruff and unsure father,
Charlie Swan played wonder-
fully by veteran Billy Burke.
Burke managed to show gruff,
sensitive and funny sides of
the Forks Police Chief, bring-
ing the true character of Char-
lie to the silver screen. Also
highly enjoyable were the
performances by the lovable
Kellan Lutz and the aloof and
gorgeous Nikki Reed (Em-
met Cullen and Rosalie Hale
respectively), and of course
Ashely Greene (Alice Cullen) was a scene stealer
with her fowing grace and charming voice.
Burkes opposite father fgure was the beautiful
and compassionate Doctor Carlisle Cullen, played
by Peter Facinelli, his wife Esme Cullen, performed
sweetly by the demure Elizabeth Reaser. And Jacob
Black, for those of you who have moved on to New
Moon, Taylor Lautners portrayal of the Quileute boy
was a highlight of the flm, but for the rest of you I say
keep reading!
Of course, when you have a book as well-known as
Twilight, any other recreation can never measure up to
the original, and Twilight held true to this rule.
The love story was a bit rushed,-honestly produc-
ers, if fans have willingly and repeatedly read a al-
most-500 page book in an era when teenagers rarely
read at ALL then you could be safe betting that said
fans would LOVE to sit through a movie longer than 2
hours, and 3 would be preferable-memorable quotes
never spoken, and important scenes both placed out of
order or entirely deleted.
But to salvage the remains, the writers added in
some new quirks and jokes, and just seeing Edward
on-sceen was enough for most fans.
Personally, you need to have read the book to fully
enjoy and understand the movie, but negatively, you
may dislike the movie just a bit more for having read
the book.
Either way, the books better but the movie is still
worth watching. On the upside, with an unprecedent-
ed reception for a female-directed movie, Twilight
earned over $70 million in its frst weekend and the
sequel New Moon is already in the works. Also, Cath-
erine Hardewick will not be in charge this time, so
cross your fngers for an even better creation in Round
Two.
