The choir wishing Mr. Bowles and Mrs. Cullen a very Happy time in the future

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends,

Welcome back to the final half term of the school year. This is always a very special term in
school, with SATS behind us this is the term in which we see pupils really flourish and school is
filled with laughter and fun packed learning opportunities. It is also an incredibly busy term
with picnics, productions, transition activities, sporting events and the celebrations of our Year
6s final few weeks at primary school which leads to very mixed emotions!
Friday 8th May was a sad day in school...
We had to say a fond farewell to two very special members of staff. Mr. Bowles and Mrs.
Cullen, who have worked at school for such a long time will be greatly missed and we wish
them all the very best in the future. We hope that Mrs. Cullen really enjoys her retirement
and that Mr. Bowles now has the opportunity to finish all his building projects while still
popping into school to catch up with any odd jobs that need doing! Our thanks go to both
members of staff for all they have done over the past 12 and 20 years; they have helped to
make school the very special place that it is today and all their hard work and loyalty has
been hugely appreciated.
Celebrating our Year 6!
One of the many highlights of last half term was celebrating the talents of the Year 6 pupils
during their SAT assessments. We were immensely proud of them as they showed a huge
amount of maturity and determination throughout the week. We know that each pupil is very
special and brings to school a wide range of talents which cant be measured by the SATs.
They are always exceedingly positive, kind, caring and very thoughtful. They have led
younger members of school maturely over the past year and these attributes which make
them well-rounded, happy and determined individuals sadly arent measured by Government
tests. It is every credit to them all that they rose to the occasion and demonstrated their
resilience and determination to be the best me that they can me. A huge well done to
Morgan, Molly, Aaron, Nathan, Harvey and Niles, we are so very proud of you and look forward
to the next special few weeks in school with you all.
Inspired by the new hall
It is wonderful that so many people are as excited as we are about our new school hall. Thank
you for all your messages of support and very generous donations. We really couldnt have
achieved our dream without the support of everyone in the community and it is great to
receive positive messages and emails as the build progresses. Pupils too have been very
inspired and, never wanting to miss an opportunity for hands on and meaningful learning,
pupils in Y4 and 5 were challenged to put their mathematical skills to the test by constructing
scale models of the building. They spent quite some time measuring and calculating before
they were able to start sawing and cutting and were justifiably pleased with the results! Well
done everyone!
Spring Ball success
Thank you to all the people who supported our latest fund raising event by purchasing tickets
and donating amazing raffle and auction prizes. We raised 4,000 and also had a fabulous
evening! A big thank you to everyone!
Next years ball will take place on Friday 6th May if you would like to join us and put the date
in your diary?
Table Top sale success!
An inspirational idea of Mrs Rileys led to another successful fund raising event on Friday 8 th

May, she and Mrs North, helped by their children and other pupils, organised an after school
table top sale. Pupils from every class brought their unwanted toys, games and books into
school to be sold to raise money for our new hall and for our partner school in Nepal, Surypal.
The choir, organised by Mrs Taylor and Miss Bellamy, sang to entertain the shoppers as they
browsed the stalls adding to the ambience of the occasion. Through fantastic and dedicated
teamwork, 110 was raised - a big thank you to everyone but an especially big thank you to
the Riley and the North families for all their hard work. They are also taking the left over
items to a carboot sale in June!
Nottinghamshire Primary schools Rugby Semi - final
We are looking forward to supporting our rugby team this Thursday when they take part in the
Nottinghamshire Primary Schools rugby semi- finals at East Retford Club at 12.30pm. All of
Class 3 will go to support our team who will be playing five other schools including Ryton Park,
Bracken Lane and Carr Hill. We wish them all the very best of luck!
Sports and community Picnic
On Tuesday 16th June we will be holding our first ever combined annual sports day and
community picnic. This year the pupils will be organised into colour teams; they then will be
racing against similar aged children as in previous years. The track will be marked out ready,
so bring your deck chairs and sit back and enjoy the fun! All pupils from Fs1 Y6 will take part
and pupils may wear their trainers and their PE kits to school on the day. Please could they all
bring their own filled water bottles and apply suncream before school; weather depending
they may also need a school jumper or hoody to keep them warm while watching their friends
race!
After the races, parents and pupils are invited to bring their picnics onto the school
playground where we will all join together for a special Team Wheatley big lunch! Feel free to
bring picnic blankets, tables and chairs to make yourself and your family comfy and take the
opportunity to make new friends and catch up with old ones! For health and safety reasons,
pupils will be asked to stay on the school playground rather than venturing onto the playing
field or park during the picnic. Parents may take their child home after the picnic if they so
wish, but will need to sign their child out of school. Parental permission will be needed by
telephone or in writing, if your child is going to leave school with another adult when the
picnic has ended.
Phonics screening
Year 1 pupils will be informally assessed on their phonic skills during the week starting 18 th
June. These assessments are part of the National Phonic screening for 6 year olds. Our pupils
are well prepared for the screening which involves them using their phonic skills to read a
range of real and pseudo words such as osk, zom and torb. Pupils are able to decode the
40 words using their phonic skills and have had lots of practice during their daily phonic
sessions. The outcomes of the screening will be shared with parents in the pupils annual
reports. If a pupils does not achieve the required standard in their screening they will be
rescreened in June 2016. Current Year 2 pupils who did not achieve the required standard last
year will also be re-screened this June.
Summer Production
A big well done to all the pupils who took part in the recent auditions for our summer
production of Zoom. This can sometimes be a daunting experience for children, however our
pupils certainly rose to the challenge and astounded Mr. and Mrs. Hawes by their skills and
confidence. Pupils now know their parts and are busy learning their lines, any help you can
give them at home with these would be really appreciated as they need to be word perfect by
the 19th June when Mr. and Mrs. Hawes are next in school. The production promises to be as
good as ever and it will be possible to order your tickets from Monday 8 th June. The
performances will be on Thursday 25th June at 1.30 and 6.00pm. All full time pupils will be
expected to be in school for both shows as they will have been working hard together to give
a truly polished performance.
