Midfielder Madison Schulte won the Sports Illustrated Player of the

Month for May after returning to the team for her senior year. She led
the varsity team in scoring her freshman year and then abruptly decided to part ways with the game shed been playing since third grade.
Schulte recently scored her 100th career goal when Seneca defeated
Kingsway, 19-12, to capture the Olympic-Patriot division title.

students for their character,
charm, integrity and humanity.

Committee passes 2015 budget

Residents can expect tax increase of $50 on average home

The Shamong Township Committee finally passed the 2015 mu-

nicipal budget at last weeks

meeting.
This years budget, totaling
$2.75 million, saw an increase of
nearly $153,000 from 2014. There
was an increase in salaries and
wages of $19,866 and a decrease in
capital improvements of $48,000.
The anticipated revenue for the
township is $2.3 million, leaving
$426,045.61 to be raised by local
taxation. This will mean an increased tax rate of 1.6 cents per
$100 of assessed valuation, resulting in an annual municipal tax
increase for residents of $50 on a
house assessed at the township

The reserve for uncollected
taxes totaled $361,553.06. The balance of the townships outstanding debt is $349,556.60, reflecting a
principal of $312,621.78 with interest of $36,934.82.

meeting, the budget was not approved in its entirety because of
one modification that was made.

were just waiting on one more
small approval, Deputy Mayor
Sean Gray said.
This modification entailed the
township adding $75,000 due to a
shared service agreement with
Southampton building code office
and also adding $196,000 for the
Jersey DOT grant to pave Forked
neck Road from Willow Grove to
Route 206.
The next township committee
meeting will be held on June 9
due to elections.

Festival highlights art, music

Indian Mills Memorial School teachers
join together for May 12 event
On May 12, the music and art
teachers of Indian Mills Memorial School joined together with
students and parents to celebrate
the arts in a festival held throughout the school.
Lara Abeyta, the schools art
teacher, positioned the artwork of
all students throughout the
school for everyone to view. Projects ranging from masks, two
point perspective drawings, relief
sculptures and eye renderings
were expertly arranged by grade
level. Additionally, art portfolios
were on display that clearly
demonstrated the progress made
by students from fifth to eighth
grade.
Tony Scardino and Susan Styers, the schools band and music
teachers, led a variety of grade
level bands and musical groups in
a stimulating concert. Scardino

said that he broke the grades out

into two separate concert bands:
grades seven and eight; and
grades five and six. This way, he
is able to work with each of them
to maximize their potential. Over
the years, her choir has been
highlighted in Philadelphia during the Thanksgiving Day Parade
and Atlantic City for the Miss
America Pageant. Styers has produced students who have gone on
to reach their goals as accomplished singers at Seneca High
School and beyond.
The crowd was impressive and
as the night progressed, it was obvious that parents, students and
teachers were overwhelmed with
pride with the performance of
their students and children.

Put down the gas pump: Legislators say no to self-service at gas stations

when youll read a pro-government-restriction opinion in
this space. As you can probably tell by
our previous diatribes, we mostly
stand for free enterprise without restrictions.
But today, we are in a nutty mood.
Were all for keeping government restrictions in place, at least at the gas
pump.
Last week, state legislators put a
swift halt to a potential proposal to lift
New Jerseys gas-pumping restrictions and allow drivers to pump their
own gas at the station, and we like
what our elected officials have done in
this case for once.
New Jersey has banned self service
at gas stations for almost 70 years, and
we see no reason to change that now.

Sure, as many people have argued,

having attendants pump our gas for us
is in New Jersey culture. Its part of
who we are spoiled people who dont
have to brave the heat, the cold, the
rain, the wind or the snow to re-fill our
gas-guzzling automobiles.
Sure, its nice to have a gas attendant pump our gas and provide an
extra level of security when we need
to fill up on a not-so-crowded road at 4
in the morning when were avoiding
Shore traffic on a holiday weekend.
But the biggest reason we believe

New Jersey shouldnt lift the restrictions on pumping gas is because it

would cost a lot of people a job.
There are thousands of people in
New Jersey who have a job pumping
gas. Even if its not a high-paying job,
it still provides necessary income for
those workers. Lift the ban, and these
people will instantly be out of a job.
If allowing self-service gas pumping
would significantly reduce prices at
the pump, then our stance might be
different. But estimates say the switch
would only save a few cents per gallon,
which means the real winners would
be the gas station owners not the
drivers.
So thumbs up to the recent decision
to not lift the government restriction.
It might be the last time you read
those words in this space.

special, Donoghue said.
From a pool of more than 1,200
students, just 54 were chosen for
this prestigious award. Each of
these 54 was recognized individually with some kind words by the
staff member who selected them
and given medals they will be
wearing at their graduation.
It is said that character is
what we do when we think no one
is looking, Donoghue said.
Well, we want you to know that
people are looking, we see you,
and we want others to see you as
we do.

Some of these students were

recognized for one-time interactions or random acts of kindness,
while others were recognized
after a teacher had gotten to know
them over their four-year career
in high school.
You are not here by accident.
You have done something remarkable, Principal Jeffrey
Spector said. You have touched
the life of another person, the
most powerful thing you can do.
All the stories were unique in
one way or another, and it made
for a colorful ceremony that drew
numerous emotions out of audience members from coaches
who have had the pleasure of
watching a player grow to teachers who have had their lives
changed by a particular students
presence on a daily basis.

her daughter with her peoples

dry eye in the auditorium.
Julie has persevered through
some tough times battling medical struggles and never complained about it taking some of
her beloved activities away.
In fact, she strives to one day
become a doctor to level the playing field for those who also find
themselves or their loved ones in
a similar situation.
I cannot think of a better person for this award. I love you so
much, Horner said.
The crowd burst out in laughter as Renee Collins presented
two separate peoples choice
awards.
Its so hard to pick just one
student when you are exposed to
so many, so unbeknownst to the
Renaissance Club, I picked two,
Collins said. So without further
adieu, allow me to introduce you
to Jack Hartman and his cell
phone.
Hartman and his cell phone
both marched up to the podium
with no shame, very proud to
have been nominated by his
teacher.
They are always together.
When theres one, theres the
other, Collins said. We get about
the same amount of face time in
class.
Nonetheless, she was thankful
for Hartman brightening her day
by being himself and for his ability to not only take a joke, but to
also fire one back her way.
This was the second to last ceremony of the year, followed by the
Senior Athlete Awards on June 2.
However, many teachers admitted
to this being their most beloved
end-of-year ceremony due to its
uniqueness.
Teachers assess you by a test
grade or class participation.
Tonight, you all get an A in
human relations, Spector said.

said. It was crazy. I did not expect anything like that.
Sports Illustrated got wind of
Schultes story early in the season, and she was put in the running with numerous high school
athletes across the country to win
this award.
SI representatives came to
Seneca for two days to conduct interviews with people close to
Schulte and get some footage of
her playing and coaching.
Schultes passion for the game
cannot be satisfied by the countless hours that go into playing a
high school sport; she also coaches a U11 girls team on the side.
While Schulte and her parents
had a bit of natural nerves going
into the interview with SI, the little girls had no problem grabbing
the microphone.
All of the girls were so excited.
They lined up after practice asking if they could all talk, Schulte
said.
As for the high school team,
they tried to keep the atmosphere
very stern to make sure they
came off as a group that was focused on nothing but winning
games. Its a task that can be
tricky at times for a silly group
that likes to keep it light at practice and focus on having as much
fun as they can.
My coach and I were cracking
up, we didnt know what to do,
Schulte said. We did have a really good practice, though. Maybe
we should wear microphones
more often!
Youll never catch anyone getting down on a teammate with
this team, even when they have a
bad game. Its constant positivity
from every direction, and it
seems to be working.
After being awarded a threeseed in the playoff bracket due to

the success it had in the regular

season, the team is now cruising
and is only two victories away
from being crowned Group 3
champions.
Its been so much fun. Thats
really the only word I can use to
describe it, Schulte said.
However, it has not always
been fun for Schulte.
After exploding onto the scene
her freshman year, earning a spot
on varsity and leading the team
in scoring, she was getting serious attention from a number of
big-time college programs.
Having her early teenage years
being dominated by visiting campuses and letters from college
coaches overwhelmed her. She
was being recruited, and she didnt even know if she wanted to be
recruited.
I felt like everything was happening too fast. I needed more
time to think about things, I just
needed a break, Schulte said.
So that is exactly what she did.
Going into her sophomore year
as an all-conference midfielder,
Schulte abruptly decided to hang
up her cleats and walk away from
the game.
Taking a step back really
helped her find herself and be a
lot happier. Nevertheless, some
things were just not the same.
Fellow senior Megan Drum
and Schulte have been inseparable since they met on their thirdgrade lacrosse team.
It was very weird when spring
came around and I would look to
hang out with her after school
and then Id remember she had a
game or practice, Schulte said.

Crothers made it an ongoing
habit to jokingly ask her former
superstar if she would be coming
to tryouts.
However, one day before the
season this spring, Schulte gave
her a different answer and decided she would be in fact attending
tryouts.

It was just
a perfect opportunity to
get involved
with
people
that Ive been
around for so
long that Im
not going to be
seeing much
of next year as
we all go off to
SCHULTE
different colleges, Schulte
said.
Though she focused solely on
bringing the fun back to the game
she had played all of her life, it is
human nature to occasionally
wonder what could have been.
The thought does run through
my mind. What else could have
happened and where would I be
today had I stayed with the team
my sophomore year and kept
playing, Schulte said. But overall, I dont have any regrets. Im
still going to the school that I
wanted to go to all along.
Schulte will be attending Penn
State in the fall. Though she is not
sure if she will be playing on the
team, she will definitely be staying involved with the sport,
whether through intramurals,
clubs or even coaching.
After considering entering the
business field, she quickly decided it wasnt for her.
Im not the type of personality
for sitting in an office all day or
going from meeting to meeting,
Schulte said. Im looking at
teaching or coaching at a high
school level or a younger level.
High school and college sports
can be very demanding with the
number of hours it requires of
athletes.
Maddy has been a pleasure to
coach over the two years she has
played for Seneca, Crothers said.
She is extremely coachable and
will do whatever it takes to put
forth her best effort for every
game.

craft and this night is the culmination of their efforts.
Abeyta was quick to echo his
remarks. Further, she reminisced
that, These students grow so
much over the years. Art is not
something that everyone can embrace, but just looking at their efforts is gratifying. I am always
amazed at the work my students
produce.

the choral group at Seneca High
School. They always raise the bar
for those around them because
they really care and are determined to be the best they can be.
