I have been involved in a few group assessment tasks in other units so had an idea

of how to go about the recruitment portfolio. I was not looking forward to doing the
portfolio because I was unsure of what was required in terms of the wiki site, also, at
first I did not know anyone in my tutorial group.
In any event, I joined a group with three other students. The group eventually
decided on SBS Australia as the organisation for the portfolio and the degree would
be a Bachelor of Business (HR/IR). The sister of one of the group members works at
SBS as a cadet journalist. We selected the group through a process of consultation,
deciding that it would be good to have some practical experience of the
organisation if needed. The fact that we consulted and listened to one another from
the start made me feel positive about my group members.
The theoretical focus of the portfolio is on some psychological theory eg: perceptual
errors in the selection process, bias, halo and horns, and on a practical application
of theory/content to the portfolio. I was particularly interested in how subjective the
R&S process is, because of that as a future practitioner of HR I will try to be as
objective as possible by planning and structuring the process as far as possible .
After selecting SBS we divided the assessment components among the group. We
did the JA as a whole group because it made sense, given that the other aspects of
the portfolio flowed from it.
One of the things that I needed to do was to create a PS for the position. Because
we had chosen a graduate in HR/IR I kept relating what I researched, read and heard
from my group members to my future employability as an HR/IR graduate. What do
I have in terms of the PS? How would I fit the requirements. Most importantly we
all agreed that applicants for our graduate position would not need to have previous
experience in a HR role, they would need to demonstrate some employment or
volunteer experience to show their ability or skill in things such as communication,
both in writing and oral, time management/working to a deadline, and working as a
team member. In fact, this portfolio task showcases my own skills in these areas
and if I need to I can use it as an example in my own resume.
At first I thought that the content for this assessment was unrelated to the first part
of the unit where we looked as sociology and how it might apply in the workplace.
As mentioned before the focus was on psychology, but there are overlaps between
the two areas. For instance, how do I go about selecting the best person for a job if
I am blinkered and narrow in my own view of the world. In my future role in HR/IR
I will use my sociological imagination as well as my knowledge of the objective
steps involved in the R&S to make sound choices.
