why does this make her a good citizen? OH I KNOW because littering and throwing trash on the
ground pollutes our earth and we dont want that to happen. By picking up others trash and making
sure they she doesnt litter she is making the environment a better place to live!

Stop and ask questions periodically to make sure students are engaged and thinking about being a
good citizen
Why might this act make this person a good citizen?
After reading, ask all students to think of a way that they could be a good citizen. Thumbs up when
you have something, Okay now whisper it to your neighbor.
It sounds like you all have at least one idea! So let me tell you what we are going to do
5: Provide extended practice and transfer: (Independent practice of the skill) Time: 15 min
Tell them they have a choice of either drawing a picture of what it means to be a good citizen or
writing AT LEAST one good, complete sentence, OR do a combination of some writing and some
drawing.
Have them go back to their seats and pass out blank white paper and encourage them to pull out their
coloring utensils.
6. Assessment / Closure: (How do you evaluate student progress or provide closure to this lesson?)
Time: 5 min
Show some of the students work on the doc camera
Emphasize key idea that Being a good citizen means you are helping your country be the best that it
can be. So even if it is something small like cleaning a spill so no one slips or picking up trash, you are
helping. It seems small but if EVERYONE does their part, then we all benefit all over the world!
7. Plans for differentiation:
Choice of how they do the assignment is differentiated to each learners abilities as long as they meet
the criteria of writing or drawing an act of being a good citizen, and it is clear they spent some time on
it, they will get credit.
