Southwest Seniors
Workout Their Brains
Mary Ann Schoenberge, Director of Southwest Senior Center.

Thirty-five seniors and 10 volunteers from Wells Fargo got their

heart rates up with seated exercises before embarking on a series
of team brain games at Southwest Senior Center. The group brain
games were one of the many programs taking place at the center
as part of the three-month long Brain-a-thon, which explored the
latest in brain health research, incentivized and challenged residents to engage in brain healthy activities.
I like knowing that Im doing good things for my brain, and
because the Brain-a-thon encourages you to keep track of what
you do, Ive been trying to be even better about doing more walks,
taking my Tai Chi classes, and working on puzzles, said center
participant Marjorie Stipek.

programs. (See more CARAG news on page 8). (Photo courtesy of Prime Time Wrestling)

Dangerous Dogs

The Minneapolis Police Department was not able to supply

the UNN with the Uptown Crime Map this month.

Provided by the City of Minneapolis

The following animals have been declared dangerous in the City
of Minneapolis. These pets have had an animal-to-animal bite/
incident or an animal-to-human bite/incident. In order to keep
our residents safe, we post pictures of these animals and their
addresses.
If an animals owner completes the necessary training and education for themselves and their pet, and an approved trainer affirms
that the pet and pet owner have made progress toward meeting
certain safety goals, the City of Minneapolis will review the case
after a reasonable amount of time (6 to 12 months, for instance)
and may remove the dangerous dog declaration.

Dangerous Animal Declarations

Under Minnesota State Statute and Minneapolis City Ordinance,
domestic animals that have bitten or demonstrated aggression
must be investigated to determine if that animal is a threat to
the publics safety and should be declared dangerous.MACC
conducts these investigations and makes dangerous animal declarations. Declarations are determined based on the severity of
the incident, including serious bites and unprovoked aggressive
behavior.

There are three types of dangerous animal declarations

Potentially Dangerous Animal (Full Declaration; TrainingOnly Declaration; or Modified Declaration)
Dangerous Animal
Destruct Order
Any animal that bites a person or domestic animal and is subject
to dangerous animal proceedings may be impounded and kenneled at the MACC shelter for the duration of the quarantine and
until compliance is met. The owner is responsible for paying all
fees incurred during quarantine at the shelter.
Declared animals must comply with certain requirements to
safeguard against future attacks or aggression. MACC conducts
bi-annual compliance checks on all dangerous animals in Minneapolis to ensure these requirements are met.

but in March it opened its brick

and mortar home in the space
vacated by The Gray House
restaurant. The small, sparsely
decorated, light-filled space is
the ideal venue for a somewhat
quirky concepta restaurant
specializing in hot dogs and
handcrafted sausages with both
familiar, traditional toppings
and out-of-the-ordinary gourmet and international ingredients.
As my companion and I
perused the walls to read the
complete menu, we found several offerings that piqued our
interest, and it was difficult to
choose only one sandwich each.
From the Daily Dog menu, my
conservative companion selected The Prairie Dog, an all-beef
hot dog with natural casing on
a lightly grilled bun. This hot
dog is not your average supermarket tube steak; the casing
actually makes a snap when
bitten. The inside marries
smoky, meaty, and spicy flavors and has minimal apparent
grease. The addition of yellow
mustard, chopped onion, tiny
sport peppers, tomato, pickle,
and celery salt creates authentic
Chicago-style heaven.
I was slightly more adventurous
in my choice of the Bock-Bockwurst, partly because I loved
the zany name. The handcrafted chicken sausage, served in
a grilled bun, was topped with
grainy, brown, Calhoun Claw
mustard, a mound of barely-sweet apple slaw, and chili
threads that were more for
looks than for taste. Now that I
have experienced the delicious

hot dogs and sausages served

at Prairie Dogs, I anticipate a
future visit to try an international-flavor sandwich, such
as the Seoul Dog, a hot dog
topped with house-made kimchi, shoyu mustard, cilantro, and chives or the
Reu-Bun, corned beef
brisket
sausage,
bacon
kraut,
Russian dressing, and Jarlsberg cheese,
served on
a pumpernickel bun.
If I feel
particularly brave,
I may try
the
Pliny
the
Elder,
consisting of
a hot dog fried
in duck fat, with
foie gras torchon,
and currant apple
relish, which could
prove to be a real palate
pleaser.
As an accompaniment to our
sandwiches, we shared a large
order of extra-crispy, Double

UPTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS - 7 .

Uptown Borealis Coming To Calhoun Square

Provided by VimLab Promotions
Calhoun Square will soon be aglow with a permanent avant-garde art installation entitled Uptown Borealis, created by Minneapolis glass artist Dan Mather. The sculpture is located at the
Hennepin entrance of Calhoun Square near Kitchen Window.
Uptown Borealis is made of 600 hand blown glass globes,
encrusted with 500 pounds of crushed iridized glass chips, hung
in 60 strands of 10 globes in a curtain pattern. Each globe contains
10 full color LEDs, for 6,000 total LEDs, which will be operated
as three pixels per globe by a state-of-the-art computer controlled
system that will generate an aurora borealis pattern as a base line,
with the capability to create a near infinite array of color patterns,
including the potential for interactive apps that could allow the
installation to respond to voice, music, and motion.
LED lights have never been used in this cutting edge way and
it will be the first installation of its kind in the world. Uptown
Borealis can transform into an American flag and fireworks to
celebrate the 4th of July or look like falling snow during the holiday season to dazzle visitors.
We are thrilled to have one of Dan Mathers show stopping art
installations on permanent display at Calhoun Square and look
forward to sharing the incredible Uptown Borealis with our
community, said Stuart Ackerberg, CEO of Ackerberg Group.
Dan Mather is well known for the modern Glass Chunk Chandeliers he created and installed at the newly expanded Walker
Art Center in 2005. He co-founded Goldenflow Studios with his
wife Rollie Reis-Mather in 1989. They are the number one manufacturer of 23k gold hand blown snow-domes in the country.
Their studio is located in the Northrup King Building in Northeast Minneapolis. Goldenflow Studios is open to the public and
Mather will be highlighting his work during Art-A-Whirl May
15-17. For more on Goldenflow Studios, please visit goldenflowstudios.com.

Vacationland is a new collaborative installation by Betsy Hunt and Zach Moser. This
work is a multi-media exploration of a
possibly fictional or possibly true story
of a group of females, aka The Rowdy
Raccoons, roaming the land to find a cure
for boredom. It is a documentation of their
adventures presented as an overload of
sensory input. It is coming of age, empty
parking lots, old clashing with new, wandering, aimlessness, nostalgia, junk yards,
navigating, vacancy, hopelessness, hopefulness, idealized youth, transcendence,
the internet. Creating a new reality, creating
your own reality, technology, using what you
have, documenting an existence, freedom,
being frozen in time, real, fake, VHS, analog, digital, and fragmented information, all
on stage. Hunt and Moser will transform the
physical space of the gallery, bombarding
the viewer with an overwhelming abundance of information. Vacationland will
be a moment in time of these meandering
