The Future Begins Now With LOPO

Automation of power supply,
based on digital technology,
began in the 70s mainly with the
implementation of computers in
power system control.
In the 80s came the introduction
and the development of digital
protection systems.
In the 90s was the breakthrough
of the switchgear automation
system.
Today electronic systems to
protect, manage and supervise
energy distribution are
implemented with enhanced
reliability. Guide lines to avoid
electronic disturbance, including
the NEMP, are State of the Art.

These electronic systems have a

high resolution and, thanks to the
processor technology, high
speeds of operation are available.
Nevertheless, signals, information
and measured values are still
mainly supplied by conventional
instrument transformers and
equipment.
Such conventional equipment
limits the possibilities of the
electronic system and supplies
power exceeding the requirement
of the microprocessor equipment.

To improve system efficiency, the

next step is the use of low power
current and voltage transformers
with suitable signal and power
levels. This could also involve
adapting design to reduce the
cost of the switchgear.
With the development of low
power instrument transformers,
Trench has taken a leading
position. With these low power
current and voltage transformers
for protection, measurement and
metering a quantum leap will be
realised in the structure of the
medium and high voltage
switchgears.

Optimisation Of System With The Trench LOPO :

A New Module In The Chain

Trench has developed LOPO , a
range of low power voltage and
current transformers compatible
with digital technology, meeting
the requirements of IEC standards
60044-7 and 600044-8.

LOPO ,

The
covered by several
patents, are designed for
significantly lower burdens than
conventional instrument
transformers, to optimally match
the conditions of digital
technology, with a much far
broader field of application.

Low Power Voltage

Transformer output is volts
rather than conventional
hundreds of volts.
Low Power Current
Transformer output is milli-volts
rather than conventional amps.
One low power instrument
transformer can be used for
protection and measurement in a
wide primary range. Therefore
one LOPO device has the same
functionality as several
conventional instrument
transformers. These low power
instrument transformers fit into
existing as well as future design
of switchgears.

Medium Voltage
LOPO the Trench Low Power Instrument Transformers For MV Switchgears
By using proven technology,
Trench has developed the
LOPO, current and voltage
transformers providing a voltage
output proportional to primary
variables.
These new instrument transformers replace conventional ones
with significant advantages.

The LOPO CT is a passive

device, based on the principle of
a ring core transformer with an
integrated precision shunt.

Main benefits at a glance

Only one current transformer
required for all measurement
and protection requirements.

No secondary circuit problem:

low power voltage and current
transformers can have their
secondary open or short
circuited. Important safety
feature.

No ferroresonance of the
voltage transformer.

The LOPO VTs are able to

withstand on-line cable and
switchgear voltage testing: no
disconnection is required.

Reduced size and weight.

Voltage Transformers:
To supply low power signals
required by modern secondary
equipment, conventional voltage
transformers can be conveniently
replaced by RC dividers.

The newly developed units can

be used up to 550 kV with a direct
connection of the secondary
voltage to the measurement and
protection in:

For over 40 years, Trench has

been supplying resistive capacitive
dividers (RC dividers) for high
voltage applications. The main
application has been in DC
converter stations.

Due to their wide frequency

band, they can be used for
power quality measurement up
to several kHz.
In GIS, the reduced size of the
low power voltage transformers
is a clear advantage to achieve
compact switchgear design.
RC dividers are designed to
withstand on-line cable and
switchgear voltage testing: no
disconnection is required.

Current Transformers:
As the current transformers are
located at ground potential, their
design is similar to those of
medium voltage equipment, i.e.
they are based on the principle of

Trench Low Power Instrument Transformers:

Applications
Medium voltage or high voltage
switchgear, gas insulated
switchgear or open air
substation, the Trench low power
instrument transformers replace
conventional instrument trans formers with technical and
financial advantages for the
customer.

The output signal of one current

or voltage low power instrument
transformer can be used for
protection, power frequency
measurement and measurement
of harmonics.
Several combinations of the
Trench low power instrument
transformer with relays from
different manufacturers or with
recorders have been
successfully tested and field
installed.

Thanks to LOPO, there is for

the first time a great opportunity
to tailor switchgear design to
achieve further cost reductions.
Now the economic efficiency
depends not only on the
secondary equipment but also on
the primary equipment and on
additional advantages of
operation.
