lighting conditions, confirm the color expectations of
clients so that each job is produced to their liking,
reduce the number of approval steps and waste for
your company, and much more.

Printing Industries RHEM Light Indicator

The Printing Industries RHEM Light Indicator is a tool for

the visual control of color viewing. This adhesive patch can
be attached to the border of color proofs, copy, reproductions, or the press sheet. The Light Indicator uses metamerism to change color and alert the viewer if the light source
is not 5000 K, the graphic arts lighting standard.

Printing Industries Color Communicator

The Printing Industries Color Communicator is a design

and prepress color-viewing tool that takes the guesswork
out of color translation. It enables you to quickly specify
a color in terms of dot area values on a printing surface.
Easier and faster to use than a color chart, the Color
Communicator gives a more reliable depiction of a color
than you could expect to get from a color monitor. The
Color Communicator consists of four process color
wedges that have a tonal scale ranging from 0100% dot
area in 10% increments. It can be used to see variations
in lightness or hue of a particular color, to determine
what color will be generated from a set of halftone dots,
to match colors, or to observe what effect different
substrates have on color.

Munsell ColorCheckers

Munsell ColorCheckers provide photographers with an

objective standard to compare, measure, and analyze
differences in color reproduction of any color rendition
system, thereby avoiding costly mistakes. Most color
management profiling applications accept a scanned
or photographed image of a ColorChecker to create an
ICC profile. Each ColorChecker contains a checkerboard
array of scientifically prepared squares in a wide range
of colors, including memory colors like flesh tones,
foliage, and blue sky. Not only are the squares the same
color as their counterparts, but they also reflect light the
same way in all parts of the visible spectrum. Because of
this unique feature, ColorCheckers can be used to match
colors and set white balance under any illumination and
with any color reproduction process.
ColorCheckers are available in three formats.

Controlling Color By the Numbers

When color control bars are printed on the press

sheet, an operator can continuously monitor ink
densities and easily verify that the press is printing
within prescribed tolerancesby the numbers, so to
speak. Color control bars allow for density readings in
several ink zones and also contain patches that evaluate tone value increase TVI/dot gain, print contrast,
gray balance, overprint trapping, doubling, and slur.
Identifying these metrics enables press crews to continuously monitor press conditions and adjust ink key
settings to correct for any variation as it occurs during
the pressrun, resulting in more consistent color for the
customer and less waste for the printer.

Anatomy of a Color Control Bar

Available in four-color, six-color, and eight-color versions, color control bars can be output at any screen
ruling that your output device supports. Dual-tier bars contain two stacked 5mm color control bars, while
single-tier color control bars include a standard 5mm bar. For convenient use on different size presses,
color control bars are provided in three widths, or they may be stepped for large-format presses. All color
control bars come in EPS format, and a PDF reference guide of elements is also included with every color
control bar.

Tint Patches

Solid Patches

Screen tint patches of 25%,

50%, and 75% allow for dot
measurement at different points on
the tone reproduction curve; TVI/
dot gain and print contrast can
also be calculated using
these patches.

Solid patches of each ink color are

used for measuring and monitoring
solid ink densities. Solid ink
densities should be run at the
values prescribed by the appropriate specifications or standards.

Star Targets

RGB Overprints

A quick visual analysis of the

Printing Industries Star Target
easily reveals when too much
dot gain is occurring or when a
directional gain, such as slur or
doubling, is present.

Two-color solid overprints of red,

green, and blue help evaluate and
measure ink film trapping and
show the maximum amount of ink
laydown possible for the various
combinations of process inks.

3N Gray Patches
Three-color neutral (3N) gray
patches (50% cyan, 40% magenta,
40% yellow) appear next to a 50%
black screen tint for reference when
evaluating gray balance. The CMY
percentages are in accordance with
GRACoL* specifications.

TAC Patches
Total area coverage (TAC) patches
allow for measurement of the
maximum ink density of CMYK
overprints. A 300% TAC patch
represents the highest allowable
dot area coverage for a #5 coated
sheet according to SWOP*
specifications.

Diagnostic Tools for Optimum Press Performance

The best way to diagnose a printing problem, control color conditions, and optimize press operation is to analyze
press performance regularly. Printing Industries of America carries a variety of test forms to help. A test form is a
comprehensive diagnostic and measurement tool designed to help the printer achieve quality color printing with less
waste and reduced makeready time. Each test form is designed to allow prepress and press operators to control
and manage the printing process while conforming to known standards and specifications. Because Printing
Industries of America test forms are provided as digital files that incorporate several PostScript elements, they can
also be used to diagnose and calibrate the imagesetter or platesetter.

Anatomy of a Test Form

Printing Industries of America test forms contain numerous quality control targets which can be used for several different
purposes: diagnostics (D), standardization (S), and process control (P). Some targets can be used for more than one purpose. Look for the letter or letters next to the name of a test form element to see what category or categories it falls into.
Mottle Patches (D)
Ink mottle, a visual defect, is the non-uniformity of color or gloss in large areas of ink coverage. Mottle patches allow the viewer to examine
patches sufficient enough in size to detect mottling when it occurs. Inconsistency or patterning in these color patches is undesirable.

Neutral Header Bar (D, P)

The header bar provides the forms name, but it is also a visual target for comparing a three-color neutral gray to a 50% black screen tint.
The bar is split horizontally; when proper ink densities are run on the press, the upper and lower portions should appear neutral.

Ladder Targets (D)

Each ladder target contains a horizontal and vertical line pattern and a 100% solid area. If the targets show changes in density and
uniformity from gripper to trailing edge, serious print problems such as slur, doubling, wash marks, and paper fan-out could be present in
the printing system.

Tone Scales/Vignettes (D, S)

Tone scales are a series of tint patches of increasing percentage used to measure tone values from highlight through shadow.
Each tone scale is accompanied by a vignette, which can be evaluated for signs of banding. Measurement data can be used to
construct tone reproduction curves.

Photo Montage & Profiling Targets (S, P)

These color and reproduction control products provide the opportunity for comprehensive analysis of a printing system in terms of how
closely it can match standards for photographic realism as well as color management targets for profiling presses.

Gray Balance Target (P, S)

This matrix of CMY overprints is a visual tool used to establish proper values for gray balance throughout the tone curve.
The square that comes closest to matching the gray standard is identified as the most neutral square; gray balance values are then
used to construct gray balance curves.

Open Designation Region (S, P)

The Open Designation Region, identified by a dashed rectangle, is designed for the placement of a color management target,
Printing Industries of America Photo Montage, or any other target such as the IDEAlliance P2P25X (for G7 implementation),
ISO images, or your custom images.

Proof Comparator (D, P)

A multi-element target that is used as a standalone target with digital proofing systems for process control and troubleshooting.

DRA Targets (D)

Digital Register Analysis (DRA) is a process which quantifies unit-to-unit sheet motion during the printing process.
Each DRA target includes uniquely identifiable markers printed by successive units from which even the slightest unit-to-unit
movement can be detected and measured.

Printing Industries Multi-Page Test Form Set

The Printing Industries Multi-Page Test Form Set consists

of eight 8.511-in. pages that can be used individually or
imposed into signatures for use on larger press sizes. The
form also provides a uniform means of testing the many
digital systems available today, including digital proofers
and presses. It is designed to measure solid ink density,
TVI/dot gain, trapping characteristics, gray balance, total
ink coverage (TAC) requirements, minimum/maximum
printable dots, and more. The Multi-Page Test Form Set
contains elements sensitive to resolution, directional
effects, moir, and raster imaging patterns. Many pages
contain CMYK data; however, a black-and-white page
provides data for single-color systems, and a set of sixcolor pages provide additional data for six-color presses.

Elements:
Neutral header bar, Ladder targets, Star targets, Tone
scales/vignettes, QC photos, Gray balance target, Mottle
patches, TAC/ink coverage target, Line resolution target,
Type resolution target, Type tint target, Fit targets, Proof

Diagnostic

Printing Industries Thumb Twist Test Form

The Thumb Twist Test Form was designed to help printers

identify UV/hybrid ink curing issues and understand how
a change in ink film thickness influences drying. This test
form is designed with three zones, each to be printed at a
different density level. The range of ink densities across the
sheet will allow the printer to evaluate the curing lamps on
the press by examining the differences in ink film.
To determine if the ink has been cured, simply twist your
thumb 90 on one of the squares with moderate force. If ink
appears on your thumb, that particular square is not cured.
Gloss back, a common issue with UV printing, is typically
caused by wet inks under a dry coating drying over time.
By ensuring that the curing lamps dry the ink sufficiently
before coating, gloss back will be eliminated. The Thumb
Twist Test Form measures 1925-in.

Printing Industries Register Test Grid

The Printing Industries Register Test Grid contains a

precisely ruled pattern of line and highlight tint patches
(10%). When printed, it can detect misregister as slight
as 0.001-in. (0.25 mm). The Register Test Grid can be
used on multi-unit printing presses to test for unit-to-unit
registration.

Line and Bleed Target

21-Step CMYK/RGB Tone Scales

The 21-Step Tone Scales allow measurement of tone
percentages from highlight to shadow in C, M, Y, K, R, G,
B and neutral gray. This data can be used to construct
print curves. In addition, these scales show differences
rendering CMYK output versus RGB output.
Line and Bleed Target
This visually evaluated target shows whether the
inkjet heads are in or out of register and if there are
compatibility issues between ink and substrate.
Radial Line Target
The Radial Line Target allows both visual and measurable
assessment. The microlines on this target will fill in based
on the resolution capabilities of the imaging device. The
patches can be measured to test color shift allowing for
accurate color reproduction.
Gradient Hexagons
Digitally imaged gradients can be affected by many
different variables. The Gradient Hexagons provide
a qualitative visual baseline that can be compared
job-to-job, day-to day, and printer-to-printer.
CMYK and RGB Directional Line Targets
The directional line targets determine whether the
actual printed width of a line is the same thickness as
the one specified in the digital file. This target helps the
user determine the minimum line width that can be held
at a particular resolution.

Type Quality Target

Sharpness and clarity can vary based on font type, size,
as well as output resolution. The Type Quality Target
allows a visual inspection of serif type at various point
sizes in solid and reversed colors.
Head Direction Vignette and Solids
Vignettes are sensitive to banding during the printing
of the test form and blotchiness may occur because
of improper RIP settings. This target visually shows
problem areas and allows solid colors to be measured
with a spectrophotometer.
Register Scale
The Register Scale not only provides a measurement tool
for the test form, but is also an indicator of misregister
and distortion horizontally, vertically, and diagonally.
Fill and Stroke Target
The Fill and Stroke target is used to evaluate the ability
of the imaging system to render positive and reversed
(negative) lines and solids in a circular orientation.
CMYK/RGB/Gray Headlight Photos
The Headlight Photos are challenging images to
reproduce accurately because of their gray balance
requirements. These images help the viewer examine
tones approximating neutral grays.

Comprehensive Workflow

Altona Test Suite Application Kit

The comprehensive Altona Test Suite Application Kit

consists of a set of PDF files specially designed for
testing digital output devicesin particular, proofing
solutions, conventional, and digital printing systems.
It can also be used to visually evaluate and check PDF/X-3
compliance and color accuracy for all software and hardware modules used in a composite PDF workflow for print
production. Sample images of correct output and typical
errors help to identify wrongly adjusted system settings or
product limitations. Additionally, the Altona Test Suite is
well suited to test editorial publishing systems (e.g., whether the final output of a newspaper page retains all properties of a placed PDF/X-3 ad). The Altona Test Suite includes
three test forms (PDF) designed for specific purposes:

NEW

Altona Measure contains test elements for setting up and

checking output systems such as proofers or conventional
or digital printing systems based on colorimetric and densitometric measurements. The file is a common PDF 1.3 file
so that its use is not limited to a single printing condition.
The Altona Measure image is 17.3712.53-in.
Altona Visual focuses on visual testing of PDF/X-3 applicability and color management accuracy on a proofing
system. This PDF/X-3 file comprises not only CMYK and
spot color elements, but it also contains several deviceindependent color components such as CIELAB and ICCbased RGB. The Altona Visual image is 17.3712.53-in.
Altona Technical addresses overprinting and font
formats from a more technical perspective than Altona
Visual. It contains 864 carefully structured patches for a
thorough evaluation of whether a PostScript RIP is able
to correctly deal with overprinting. In addition, this file
contains text that is coded in all relevant font formats.
The Altona Technical image is 11.7316.53-in.
Includes: Test forms (PDF), Characterization data,
ICC profiles, 16 reference prints, 7 color specimens,

Technology Watch Resometer Test Form

This multi-faceted digital test form is used to measure the

performance of devices such as digital presses, proofers,
imagesetters, computer-to-plate systems, copiers, and
the RIPs associated with them. It uses PostScript code
to automatically update its targets and gives the viewer
a deeper look into the output devices ability to produce
quality print. It supports consistent printing by helping
to preflight the RIPs settings for an optimal workflow. It
can also help to standardize procedures for file setup and
provide feedback for automation. The Resometer allows
the press operator to produce the highest quality image
from
a specific output device. The Resometer measures
8.511-in.
