Vogelsong COLORef
Voglesong COLORef provides a Color CRM (certified reference material) for verifying the characteristics and performance
of all color measurement instruments. The 2010 version 1.0 has C, M, Y, K, white, and 50% gray patches with the durability and color precision of ceramic tiles. Data sets are provided in full spectral values, CIE L*a*b*c*h*, and Status T and E
densities. Measuring the Color CRM should yield similar results when compared to the measurements provided. If not,
the device needs attention! It may be providing inaccurate information about your color processes!

Proper understanding of color tolerances is important in the graphic arts. By using the Pilot Color Tolerance Exercise,
your company can determine in-house and customer tolerances for color acceptability. Using this exercise, you can
determine a customers tolerance and quote their job more effectively; how long it takes certain color devices to drift
beyond established tolerances; and whether the quality and repeatability of color measurement devices, scanners,
monitors, and output devices falls within acceptable tolerance standards.
The kit includes six strips of color patches, instructions for administering the exercise, and an easy-to-follow guide that
provides a numerical tolerance.

The HRR (Hardy, Rand, and Rittler) Pseudoisochromatic Test is a well-respected test for color vision deficiency
(color blindness) preferred by optometric physicians and used in several industries. The HRR was developed to serve
as a screening test to separate those with defective color vision from those with normal color vision; as a qualitative
diagnostic test to classify the type of color defect (protan or deutan/tritan or tetartan); and as a quantitative test to
indicate the degree of any defective color vision (mild, medium, or strong).
The HRR test includes a series of 24 plates, a brush for tracing shapes, instructions for proper testing, and scoring
details that determine the type of vision defect.

The Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test examines hue discrimination ability and is intended for use in vocational and
diagnostic applications. The FM 100 Hue Test uses four trays with 85 color chips (caps) of varying hue and asks the
viewer to arrange them in order. This test has been shown to be useful in classifying those with normal color vision
into above-average, average, and poor hue discrimination.
The FM 100 Hue Test Software allows for user-friendly scoring in multiple languages; graphs and charts provide
at-a-glance determination of your color vision capability. For more in-depth analysis, the software includes a
database for storage of everyones visual color assessment capability.

Proofs are an essential part of the printing process, as they are used to show customers what to expect from the final
printed piece in terms of color reproduction. The Printing Industries Proof Comparator is an ideal tool for evaluating
the accuracy and consistency of proofs, and it can also be used on the press sheet to provide a way to validate proofto-press match. With the Proof Comparator, you can calibrate and control device reproduction characteristics such as
directional effects and resolution. It can also be used to measure and evaluate press variables such as gray balance,
solid ink density, dot gain, and print contrast. The Proof Comparator measures 1.259-in.

The Printing Industries Plate Control Target is a highly precise test image for diagnosing, calibrating, and monitoring the
platemaking process. It can also be useful for digital proofing and digital printing systems. By identifying non-uniform
imaging, the Plate Control Target helps you improve consistency in the exposure of printing plates and other materials.
In addition to exposure, it also allows you to measure pixel resolution, directional effects, minimum/maximum dot, and
other reproduction characteristics. The Plate Control Target measures 6.50.65-in.

The Ugra/Fogra Media Wedge consists of 72 patches, which are defined with area coverages of the process colors
CMYK. Colorimetric aim values according to ISO 12647-2 are defined for each patch, according to the printing
procedure and substrate. The Ugra/Fogra Media Wedge is recognized worldwide as a control tool for establishing
a contract proof. This wedge is also integrated in many proofing systems and RIPs as a licensed component and can
be used as a digital control tool in many workflows. This tool helps the user observe the effect of an image processed
in the CMYK mode and other prepress work.

Controlling Color By the Numbers
Available in four-color, six-color, and eight-color versions, color control bars can be output at any screen
ruling that your output device supports. Dual-tier bars contain two stacked 5mm color control bars, while
single-tier color control bars include a standard 5mm bar. For convenient use on different size presses,
color control bars are provided in three widths, or they may be stepped for large-format presses. All color
control bars come in EPS format, and a PDF reference guide of elements is also included with every color
control bar.

evaluating gray balance. The CMY
percentages are in accordance with
GRACoL* specifications.
TAC Patches
Total area coverage (TAC) patches

Diagnostic Tools for Optimum Press Performance
The best way to diagnose a printing problem, control color conditions, and optimize press operation is to analyze
press performance regularly. Printing Industries of America carries a variety of test forms to help. A test form is a
comprehensive diagnostic and measurement tool designed to help the printer achieve quality color printing with less
waste and reduced makeready time. Each test form is designed to allow prepress and press operators to control
and manage the printing process while conforming to known standards and specifications. Because Printing
Industries of America test forms are provided as digital files that incorporate several PostScript elements, they can
also be used to diagnose and calibrate the imagesetter or platesetter.

Anatomy of a Test Form
Printing Industries of America test forms contain numerous quality control targets which can be used for several different
purposes: diagnostics (D), standardization (S), and process control (P). Some targets can be used for more than one purpose. Look for the letter or letters next to the name of a test form element to see what category or categories it falls into.
Mottle Patches (D)
Ink mottle, a visual defect, is the non-uniformity of color or gloss in large areas of ink coverage. Mottle patches allow the viewer to examine
patches sufficient enough in size to detect mottling when it occurs. Inconsistency or patterning in these color patches is undesirable.
