Abuse on children has been going on for many years. In the past,
hitting a child was an act of discipline. Nowadays, it is not. Based on
statistics by Ark of Hope for Children, around 40 million children are abused
each year. Abuse can happen in many different forms from physical to
emotional and mental to even sexual. Each abuse can affect the child in
many different ways. Children who are naturally playful should not be
subjected to abuse which will make them turn to drugs, have mental
problems and repeat what has been done unto them to other people.
According to Hermes, A. (2015), children who are abused tend to be
more isolated and withdrawn and it carries until they grow old. This isolation
and withdrawal causes the child to become depressed and they will refuse to
talk to anyone. In turn, this will cause them to harm themselves to get their
mind off their abuse. Some adults even grow up having post-traumatic stress
disorder which also gives them lower self- esteem when they are out and
about. Children will panic easily at the sound of someone raising their voice
especially if they are physically abused.
Furthermore, According to Smith, M. and Segal, J.(2015),children turn
to drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism. Teenagers who are also
children lean towards drugs and alcohol to get their mind off the trauma that
theyve been through and ensure them an escape from the reality that they
have to face every day. Drugs and alcohol numb the pain of the abuse and
downs all their sense.
According to National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children
[NSPCC](2015), Children who are abused have trust issues in relationships.
They believe that they have been betrayed by the person that they have
trusted. As a result, the child grows up having trust issues and does not
believe in commitment. The fear of being betrayed again as well as being
controlled has a grip on their lives that they grow up fearing life itself.
We as adults should work together to preserve the innocence or
children and to ensure that they grow up in an environment that cultivates a
free spirit and a kind soul which gets its daily dose of laughter. Children bring
joy into the world and we should take caution to ensure that they always do .
