Swansea City Operas Faust

Singers join for Faust

SWANSEA City Opera visit The Torch Theatre later
this month with Gounods
Faust.
The company will be
working with Haverfordwest Operatic Society for
the performance at The
Torch on March 28 to
bring some of Fausts

most ambitious scenes

to life. The local singers
will be on stage for a short
scene and will participate
off stage in some of the
moments that require a
larger choir.
Sung in English, this
dark Gothic tale follows
the fortunes of Faust,

who, weary of life, is contemplating suicide when

he encounters Mphistophls (the Devil). There
will be a pre-performance
talk about the opera and
production at 6.15pm, given by the artistic director
of Swansea City Opera,
Brendan Wheatley.

LEGENDARY singer Eva

Cassidy is the subject of
a live music show at the
Torch, Milford Haven
tonight.
Co-produced by and starring Sarah-Jane Buckley,
known to millions as
Kathy Barnes in TVs
Hollyoaks, and with an
onstage live band, Songbird traces a remarkable,
poignant journey from
Evas humble beginnings
to her untimely death at
the age of just 33.
Sarah-Jane is known as
one of the worlds leading
Eva Cassidy performers
and has spent years perfecting the Eva sound.
She said: I wanted to
bring her beautiful arrangements to life and
also give the audience a
sense of this fascinating
woman. When I first heard
Eva on Terry Wogans
radio show, her voice
stopped me in my tracks.
Her range and emotional
effect was spellbinding
and, like the rest of the
country, I was hooked.
The show is a chance

Sarah-Jane Buckley sings

Eva Cassidy
to hear 25 of Cassidys
unique interpretations of
well-known songs including Songbird, Fields of
Gold, Over the Rainbow
and Cheek to Cheek. As a
vocalist and guitarist, she
interpreted melodies from
a wide variety of musical
categories infusing all her
songs with authentic emotion and power that made
them both moving and
memorable.
Songbird The Music of
Eva Cassidy is at 7.30pm.
Tickets are 22 from the
box office.

Six pages with puzzles, theatre, eating out, exhibitions, art, comedy ...

Hilarious historical
shows visit theatre
THERES a touch of madness in the air at Milford
Havens Torch Theatre in
March.
Living Spit pay a return
visit to The Torch with
Elizabeth I: Virgin on the
Ridiculous on March 19, and
Britains favourite literary
lunatics LipService are also
back with their multi-award
winning cult show Withering Looks on March 25.
In Elizabeth I: Virgin on
the Ridiculous, Living Spit
look at England in 1558 in
their unique, inimitable
way. Howard and Stuart attempt to tell the story of the
greatest Monarch that ever
lived but will these two
theatrical sons of Bristol be
up to the challenge?
With live original music,
silly songs, smutty shenanigans, perfunctory props
and historical horseplay,
Elizabeth I: Virgin on the
Ridiculous promises to be
another poorly-researched
lesson in Tudor history that

Comedies come to the Torch this month

audiences will never forget.
Britains favourite literary
lunatics LipService (made

up of Maggie and Sue) are

also back at the Torch with
their multi-award winning

cult show Withering Looks,

which takes an authentic
look at the lives and works
of the Bronte sisters
well, two of them actually,
Annes just popped out for
a cup of sugar.
Who is the Brontes
mysterious neighbour,
Mr Moorcock of Ravaged
Heath House, and what
does the maniacal laughter coming from his attic
mean?
Do unfulfilled souls really
wander the wild and heathclad moors?
Who should Cathy marry
Heathcliff or David
Niven?
Peopled with many of the
characters we know and
love, Maggie and Sue move
effortlessly from frock to
frock coat.
Elizabeth I: Virgin on
the Ridiculous visits The
Torch Theatre on March
19, at 7.45pm and Withering
Looks is at the theatre on
March 25, at 7.30pm.

Quire workshop

Pembrokeshire West Gallery Quire members dressed for a concert

MEMBERS of Pembrokeshire West Gallery Quire are
inviting all those with a love
of singing to join them for a
workshop day in Tenby on
Saturday, March 21.
Quires could be found in
chapels, churches and communities in the 18th and 19th
centuries singing secular
and sacred music.
They sang in soprano, alto,
tenor, bass format with one
or two instruments (eg cello,
violin, flute etc) playing the
tune for the singers to follow.
Local composers would set
words to their own compositions which gave great
variety.
Many familiar standards
particularly those by Charles
Wesley or William Williams

would have been set to such

tunes. Psalms too were set to
be sung by the quire.
The quire often sang from
specially built galleries at
the west end of the church
or chapel, see Prendergast,
Haverfordwest for example,
hence the name.
This months workshop will
be led by Pembrokeshires
West Gallery Quires guests
Edwin and Sheila Macadam
and members of Immanuels
Ground quire from Warwickshire.
The choir will be meeting
in Church House, Tenby,
from 10am-3pm on Saturday,
March 21.
The cost is 5.
Please ring 01437 710071 to
book or just turn up.

Tune up your talent

AN award-winning
business will be
hosting a fundraising
event this weekend to
encourage the people
of Pembrokeshire
to enter the world of
music.
Musicians World,
which provides comprehensive musical
instrument advice,
sales and tuition, has
organised a Learn to
Play Day on Saturday,
March 21, which will
take place in the store
in Haverfordwests
High Street.
The event has been
organised in conjunction with the
national campaign day
launched by the Music
For All charity. The
aim is to give people
the opportunity to
have a go at playing a

musical instrument
they havent played
before.
Throughout the day
free taster sessions
will be held on a
range of instruments
including the keyboard, guitar, drums
and saxophone, in
addition to vocal and
DJ-ing sessions.
Deputy manager
Aaron Williamson,
said: We encourage
anyone who hasnt
had the opportunity to
play a musical instrument before to give it
a go on our Learn to
Play Day.
Donations collected
on the day will be
presented to the Music
For All charity.
Call the shop to book
a taster session or to
find out more.

Transporting the viewers

NARBERTH Youth Theatre
has joined forces with Narberth Museum to present
an original piece of theatre
which pays homage to those
who fought in the Great War
and in Afghanistan.
Intertwining original
dramatisations of letters
written by local soldiers
who joined Lord Kitcheners
call to arms during World
War I, The Pals Battalion
runs from March 26-29 at
Narberth Museum.
Transporting the audience
between the school playground and the battlefield,
WW1 Britain and modern

day Afghanistan, the cast reveal the stories of those who

died, those who survived
and those who protested.
Fittingly, the performance
takes place in Narberth
Museum, to which the relatives of local brothers David
and Evan Salmon, donated
the letters which provided
the inspiration for The
Pals Battalion. The unique
space has further inspired
the directors and cast to
incorporate ideas born in
workshops and visits to the
museum into the production, by turning the venue
into a playground, trench,

bunker, street, hospital and

battlefield.
The Pals Battalion has
been developed in less than
three months by the directors, facilitators and the
30-strong cast of 11-17 year
olds, many of whom wowed
audiences with their talent
and professionalism in their
site-specific production of
Mary Sister of Mary, which
attracted large audiences
to Gravells Garage for last
years show.
Tickets are 8 for adults
and 5 for students and
under 16s and are available
from Span Art.

Is U Iz have the county covered Isotope

head to
Dingle
jazz night

INTERVIEW: Is U Iz
By Tom Sparkes
ITS just not happening here at all, says Ben
Reynolds, bass player and
founding member of Milford Havens newest covers
band, Is U Iz.
Were sitting in a pub
discussing the local music
scene over a pint of Worthingtons. An arcade machine flickers crazily in the
corner, and the pub stereo
is blaring into a virtually
empty room.
Is U Iz are a difficult
band to pigeonhole. Led
by Miranda Rees Barretts
piano and rather lovely
vocals, they are equally
at home with smoky jazz
standards as they are with
soul, funk, and Motown.
The line-up too is flexible,
switching between three
and five players depending
on the gig.
Ben explains how Barrett
only started playing piano
after a bout of tendonitis.
He shifts awkwardly in
his seat, actually, that
might be Kevs story, I cant
remember.
Kevin Shanklin is the
outfits resident trumpet
player. He plays with a rich
tone and power which suggests brass band roots.
I ask Ben whether theres

Ben Reynolds of Is U Iz
chance of an album of
original material in the
future.
Nah, he says, theres
only room enough for covers in this county. Original
bands struggle to develop
a fanbase locally. Every
conversation I have with
musicians quickly returns
to the state of the scene in
Pembrokeshire. So do new
bands really have much of
a chance, I ask. There is a
long silence. I dont know,
he says.
The Red Hot Chilli Peppers play over the speakers.

Its all about this rock rubbish these days, Ben says,
gesturing at the speaker. I
ask him about his dream
gig. I dont care where
it is, he says, as long as
theres a good crowd. 70s
funk plays next, and Ben
dances in his seat before
the barmaid skips tracks.
Is U Iz are definitely an
act worth following; may
the trio croon you while
you eat and the quintet
move you on your dancing
feet. They are certainly a
talented group of musicians, I just hope they have

the space and opportunity

to develop as an act.
I blag a couple of free
tickets to their next gig so
I can write a review before
heading out into the freezing cold night.
Is U Iz will be playing
at the Harlequins Rugby
Football Club, Pembroke
Dock, on Friday, March 27.
Doors open 7.30pm. Tickets
cost 5.

The perfect album

ALBUM REVIEW:
Walking into White

Sarah McQuaid

By Tom Sparkes
THAT Sarah McQuaid is not
more widely acknowledged
as an alternative-folk music
genius has me truly baffled.
Sarahs incredibly distinctive voice and talent for
creating beautifully encapsulated story-like songs have
kept me hooked since the
release of her 1997 album
When Two Lovers Meet. Just
a few refrains are enough
to remind me of the time I
spent living on the moor in
Devon.
Last month, the Cornwall
based singer-songwriter
released her fourth solo
album, Walking Into White,
and it is perfect.
Sarahs style has flourished, becoming even more
unique. Every song tells
an atmospheric tale; two
children lost in moorland
fog, a mud-bound sailing
boat, a young boys fear
of volcanoes. This is an
incredibly personal album,
perhaps partially autobiographical, and made all
the more intimate by some
pretty unorthodox recording

techniques used by coproducers Jeremy Backofen

and Adam Pierce.
There are no weak tracks
here. Every song has its
own individual trait, from
the samba rhythms of
Yellowstone through to
the polyrhythmic lilt and
shuffle of the mesmerising
Jackdaws Rising. Sweetness
And Pain harks back to the
stripped-down immediacy
of When Two Lovers Meet.
The Tide, Where The Wind
Decides To Blow and the title
track Walking Into White
all draw inspiration from
Arthur Ransomes classic
childrens book Swallows
and Amazons.
Not only has Sarah McQuaid written a real pearl
of an album, she is also
travelling to Pembrokeshire
to perform as part of the
Pembrokeshire Intimate
Gigs series.
It is a real triumph to see
musicians of this calibre
visiting the county.
Part of the uniqueness of
Sarahs sound comes from
her use of DADGAD guitar
tuning.
If you are interested in
learning about this style of
playing, Sarah will be running a one-hour workshop
on the Sunday morning after

SPANJAZZ returns tonight,

Wednesday, with Welsh
quintet Isotope led by wellknown saxophonist Andrew
Fawcett and trumpeter Ben
Thomas, at The Dingle Club,
Narberth.
They perform original compositions and jazz standards
by Joe Henderson, Wayne
Shorter and Sam Rivers
amongst many others.
Andrew Fawcett has led
bands in many top jazz venues across the UK, and has
been recognised by both The
Guardian and The Independent as Gig of the Week.
Ben Thomas is a talented
trumpeter and composer
with many years of experience creating music with an
array of inspirational musicians. A versatile musician,
Ben has worked at the highest level in TV, radio and the
concert stage with various
innovative artists producing music in a wide range of
styles from chart topping experimental pop to ethereally
meditative chamber groups.
Additionally the band has
performed at many prestigious venues, most recently at
the opening of a new Architectural building in Cardiff.
Isotope have also performed
at the Brecon Jazz Festival
and toured with Italian pianist Davide Logiri.

Celebration of landscape
AN ARTIST and poet who
have been inspired by the
Pembrokeshire landscape
have brought their work together for an exhibition in
the Tower at Oriel y Parc
Gallery and Visitor Centre
in St Davids.
The exhibition Tir /Land:
A Celebration of Pembrokeshire by husband and
wife Ieuan and Janet Daniel, is a collection of artwork and poetry inspired
by Pembrokeshires trees,
wildlife, ocean, geology and
ancient archaeology.
They have spent the last
35 years visiting the area
and travelling throughout
Pembrokeshire, with Ieuan
studying and painting the
landscape.
Ieuan said: My work
expresses to me the essence

of being Celtic rooted in

life forces, the very nature,
power, and mysteries of the
ancient Welsh landscape,
its decay and regeneration. This identity plays
an important part in my
creative response to the life
and landscape of Pembrokeshire.
My aim is to help visitors and residents look not
only out to sea, but inshore,
at how elemental forces
have shaped the natural
landscape that curves
around the Pembrokeshire
Coast National Park, and
stretches back and forth to
the county boundaries.
Alongside his work will
be some of his wife Janets
poetry. The exhibition will

RELIEF MILKING

THE new chairman of Pembrokeshire-based Welsh cooperative Calon Wen says he

believes organic milk has a
bright future.
Dave Edge who this month
takes over the role of herding 20 family run farms under
the branded Welsh milk, even
points out that for medium
sized conventional farms in
Wales, it could be the time to
make the switch to organic in
the near future.
Mr Edge says the consistent
prices Calon Wen can secure
for their milk points to a solid,
and growing, demand among
consumers who consider organic milk as a staple not a
luxury. One in four shoppers
opt for organic milk now and
thats coming off the back of
the deepest recession in living memory where household
budgets were hardest hit.
Calon Wen has just secured a
deal to supply Asda with milk
and that means we now hold a
full house, stocked by the big
five supermarkets," he said.

Milk irms take tips from water

WALES milk industry could
match the success of the lucrative branded bottle water
sector, according to a communications expert.
Volvic and Evian produce 24
per cent of all bottled water
sold in the UK, even though
their price tag is double that
of unbranded alternatives.
Ed Garner, communications
director at Kantar Worldpanel, told the DairyCo Welsh
Conference at Aberystwyth,
that the milk industry could
learn from these brands.
Milk is cheaper than
branded water but not cheaper than unbranded water.
We need to take the same approach with our milk, to add
value, he said.

The conference, Communicating With the Consumer,

had speakers including Mr
Garner, Amanda Ball, the
head of marketing and communications at DairyCo, and
Amy Jackson, Nuffield scholar and PR consultant.
Mr Garner warned that supermarket price wars would
remain a threat for milk because retailers regard it as
the ideal loss leader heavy
and perishable, which therefore limited volume sales.
But consumers were becoming more sympathetic to
the cause of dairy farmers,
largely driven by a warming
effect resulting from high
profile media coverage of the
milk price crisis.

We must be proud of our
industry and shout about it.
Amy Jackson shared his
message. Dont knock others, she said. Ms Jackson
had investigated whether the

She believed farmers could
learn from companies such
as Gressingham Foods, which
had a policy of engaging with
the local community ahead
of any new development.
And yet she also discovered
that there was a big demand
for small farm products.

When farming is in the

mainstream press we see a
spike in interest, a warming
effect. The public are more
likely to think that dairy
farmers are doing a good
job, said Amanda Ball.
The current milk price

the need for dairy farmers to
unite as one voice, whatever
their scale and system.
Powys farmer Fraser Jones,
whose six year battle to secure planning permission for
a 1,000 cow dairy is well publicised, insisted there was no
right or wrong system.

THE COUNTY OF PEMBROKE (UNCLASSIFIED (U3348) ROAD VIA PENTY

PARK MILL, NR CLARBESTON ROAD)
(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF VEHICULAR TRAFFIC) ORDER 2015
NOTICE is hereby given that Pembrokeshire County Council intend not less than seven days
from the date of this Notice, to make an Order under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation
Act 1984 as amended by the Road Traffic (Temporary Restrictions) Act 1991.
The proposed Order is necessary so that work can be carried out in connection with the
Authoritys surface dressing programme, including carriageway patching preparatory work.
The effect of the Order will be to temporarily prohibit all vehicular traffic, other than exempted
vehicles, from proceeding along the unclassified (U3348) road via Penty Park Mill, from its
junction with the class III (C3002) Crundale to Clarbeston Road road, north to its junction with
the class III (C3059) Spittal to Clarbeston road at Penty Park.
The alternative route for traffic will be via the C3002 Haverfordwest to Clarbeston Road road,
the C3011 Clarbeston Road to Walton East road and the C3059 towards leading to Spittal.
It is intended that the restrictions, which will be signed accordingly, will come into effect on
Tuesday 7th April 2015 for an initial period of approximately 5 days to enable the carriageway
patching works to be carried out. A further closure will then follow in the next 4-5 months in
order to carry out the surface dressing works.
Pedestrian access will be maintained together with vehicular access to property located either
side of the works area and where practicable.
The Order will remain valid for a maximum period of 12 months as a contingency should the
works need to be rescheduled or in the event of any unforeseen circumstances.
Dated this 18th March 2015
