INTRODUCTION

Touch screen displays are ubiquitous world wide

Frequent touching a touch screen display can

ultimately lead to failure of the touch screen

To avoid this a simple user interface for Touch less

control of electrically operated equipment is being
developed.

It is developed by Elliptic Lab

This system depends on hand and or finger motions

WHAT IS TOUCH SCREEN ?

A touch-screen is an electronic visual display that the

user can control through simple or multi-touch gestures
by touching the screen with a special stylus/pen and-or
one or more fingers.

The touch-screen enables the user to interact directly

with what is displayed, rather than using a mouse ,
touchpad, or any other intermediate device

5 TYPES OF TOUCHSCREEN TECHNOLOGY

Resistive Touch

Surface capacitive

Projected capacitive

Saw Touch

Infrared Touch

RESISTIVE TOUCH

A resistive touch screen monitor is composed of a glass

panel and a film screen, each covered with a thin
metallic layer, separated by a narrow gap

When a user touches the screen, the two metallic

layers make contact, resulting in electrical flow

SURFACE CAPACITIVE

Surface capacitive touch screen monitor, a transparent

electrode layer is placed on top of a glass panel, and
covered by a protective cover

When an exposed finger touches the monitor screen, it

reacts to the static electrical capacity of the human
body; some of the electrical charge transfers from the
screen to the user.

PROJECTED CAPACITIVE
A projected capacitive is composed of a sheet of glass
with embedded transparent electrode films and an IC
chip, which creates a three dimensional electrostatic
field.
When a finger comes into contact with the screen, the
ratios of the electrical currents change and the
computer is able to detect the touch points.

SAW TOUCH

SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) touch screen monitors

utilize a series of piezoelectric transducers and
receivers along the sides of the monitors glass plate to
create an invisible grid of ultrasonic waves on the
surface

INFRARED TOUCH

Infrared touch screen monitors do not overlay the

display with an additional screen or screen sandwich.

Ensures best possible image quality

When an object interrupts the invisible infrared light

beam, the sensors are able to locate the touch point

TOUCHLESS TOUCHSCREEN USER INTERFACE

A simple user interface for Touchless control of

electrically operated equipment is being developed by

Elliptic Labs

This technology lets you control our gadgets like

Computers, MP3 players or mobile phones without
touching them.

This unique screen is made by TouchKo, White

Electronics Designs, and Groupe 3D.

It works by detecting your hand movements in front

of it.
This system depends on hand and or finger motions, a
hand wave in a certain direction
The sensor can be placed either on the screen or near
the screen

The device is based on optical pattern recognition

using a solid state optical matrix sensor with a lens to
detect hand motions
This sensor is then connected to a digital image
processor, which interprets the patterns of motion

Outputs results as signals to control fixtures,

appliances, machinery, or any device controllable
through electrical signals

WORKING

Requires a sensor but the sensor is neither hand

mounted nor present on the screen

The sensor can be placed either on the table or near

the screen.

The sensor can recognize the position of an object

from as 5 feet

System is capable of detecting movements in 3D

without ever having to put your fingers on the screen

TOUCH SENSOR

Touch sensor is a clear glass panel with a touch

responsive area.

It is placed over a display screen

TOUCH-LESS GBUI

GBUI means Gesture Based Graphical User Interface

Allows you to take applications with simple hand

movements.

The system would know to post it on an intranet and

also send a link to a specific group of people.

TOUCHLESS MONITOR

This monitor is made TouchKo

Our hand doesnt have to come in contact with the

screen at all, it works by detecting your hand
movements in front of it.

Point your finger in the air towards the device and move
it accordingly to control the navigation in the device

Designed for applications where touch may be difficult,

such as for doctors who might be wearing surgical
gloves

TOUCH LESS USER INTERFACE

Sensors are mounted around the screen that is being
used, by interacting in the line-of-sight of these
sensors the motion is detected and interpreted into
on-screen movements.

Just point at the screen (from as far as 5 feet

away),and you can manipulate objects in 3D.

Gestures are translated into screen commands

SCREEN COMMANDS

TOUCH LESS SDK

The Touchless SDK is an open source SDK for .NET

applications

Multi-touch based applications using a webcam for

input

Touchless SDK enables touch without touching

Color based markers defined by the user are tracked

and their information is published through events to
clients of the SDK.

Fig: Touch-less SDK

TOUCH LESS DEMO

It is an open source application that anyone with a

webcam can use to experience multi-touch

The demo was created using the touch-less SDK and

windows forms with C#

4 fun demos are:

-> Snake
-> Defender
-> Map
-> Draw

Fig: Touchless Demo

TOUCH WALL

It is the first multi-touch product

It refers to the touch screen hardware setup itself and

software is plex

Touch Wall consists of three infrared lasers that scan a

surface.

By using a projector entire walls can easily be turned

into a multi touch user interface.

PLEX

It is a media player system and software suite

consisting of many player applications for 10-foot user
interfaces and an associated media server that
organizes personal media stored on local devices

Plex organizes video, music and photos from personal

media libraries and streams them to smart TVs,
streaming boxes and mobile devices

WHATS NEXT???

You can drag windows around or close them, for

instance, by pointing and gesturing in midair above
the keyboard. You should be able to buy an Airstrikeequipped laptop next year, with high-end stand-alone
keyboards to follow.

Any such system is unlikely to replace typing and

mousing. But that's not the point. Airstrike aims to
give you an occasional quick break from those
activities.

CONCLUSION

Todays thoughts are again around user interface. Efforts

are being put to better the technology day-in and day-out.

The Touch-less touch screen user interface can be used

effectively in computers, cell phones, webcams and
laptops.

May be few years down the line, our body can be

transformed into a virtual mouse, virtual keyboard and
what not??,

Our body may be turned in to an input device!
