    The First Manned Balloon Flight

    and Franois Laurent le Vieux dArlandes (Monsieur le Marquis dArlandes)
    departedChteau de la Muette , the home of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinettenear
    the Bois de Boulogne in the western outskirts of Paris, aboard a hot air balloon
    which had been designed and built bythebrothers Joseph-Michel Montgolfier and
    Jacques-tienne Montgolfier.
    De Rozier had made several tethered ascents previously, learning to control the
    balloon. On this, the first manned, untethered ascent, de Rozier and Marquis
    dArlandes rose to an altitude of approximately 3,000 feet (910 meters) and drifted to
    the southwest. After about 25 minutes, theydescendto land between two windmills
    outside the city, at Butte-aux-Cailles. They had traveled about five miles (nine
    kilometers). They could have flown farther, but the embers from the fire were
    beginning to scorch the balloon.

    The First Manned Balloon Flight

    The Montgolfier brothers were the sons of a paper maker. They combined
    with Jean-Baptiste Rveillon, a wallpaper manufacturer, to construct their balloon
    envelopes of taffeta (a woven silk fabric) coated by an alum/varnish mixture. The
    balloon flown by de Rozier and the Marquis dArlandes had an approximate volume
    of 60,000 cubic feet (1,699 cubic meters). It was approximately 75 feet (22.86 meters)
    tall with a diameter of 50 feet (15.24 meters). The air withintheballoon was heated
    by burning coles. This resulted in a pressure differential: the heated air was less
    dense that the ambient air. This caused the balloon to rise.
    Jean-Franois Piltre de Rozier was killed 15 June 1785, while attempting to
    crosstheEnglish Channel in a hydrogen balloon along with Pierre Romain. Adverse
    winds blew him back onshore, but for unknown reasons, the balloon collapsed and
    fell approximately 1,500 feet (457 meters) to the ground near Wimereux, Pas-deCalais.

    "The aerostatic machine was constructed of cloth lined with paper, fastened together on a
    network of strings fixed to the cloth. It was spherical; its circumference was 110 feet, and a
    wooden frame sixteen feet square held it fixed at the bottom. Its contents were about 22,000
    cubic feet, and it accordingly displaced a volume of air weighing 1,980 1bs. The weight of the gas
    was nearly half the weight of the air, for it weighed 990 lbs., and the machine itself, with the
    frame, weighed 500: it was, therefore, impelled upwards with the force of 490 lbs.
    Two men sufficed to raise it and to fill it with gas, but it took eight to hold it down till the signal
    was given. The different pieces of the covering were fastened together with buttons and buttonholes. It remained ten minutes in the air, but the loss of gas by the button-holes, and by other
    imperfections, did not permit it to continue longer. The wind at the moment of the ascent was
    from the north. The machine came down so lightly that no part of it was broken."
