Mixteco National Summit, Part One

January 15-17, 2015

was a historic time
when the first National
Summit for reaching the Mixteco Peoples of Mexico was held at Gateway Baptist Church. Sponsored
by the Montgomery Baptist Association, Montgomery Mixteco Task Force, and the SBC
International Mission Board, the summit was geared toward churches and individuals already
reaching this people group in the United States. It was a fruitful time. Words do not adequately
describe the work of the Holy Spirit among the attendees during the summit. God was at work! Here
are some things you need to know.

UPCOMING EVENTS

According to the International Mission Board, the Mixteco

(Mees-teh-ko) people are THE largest unreached,
unengaged people group in the Americas. Let that
sink in.
They are an indigenous tribe where Spanish is NOT their
first language. The Mixteco language has over 50
dialects. They are an oral people with no written word

his testimony the opening night of the summit.
They are not Hispanics; they are Indians.
The Mixteco people are family-oriented and hard workers
who work as a community or as families, not individually. This is a patriarchal society. In the
spiritual sense, if you win the father to Christ, you will most likely win the whole family.
Most people have been trafficked into the U.S. with promises of a better life, were left to fend for
themselves, or indentured to someone who had control over them.
In Montgomery, we have counted over 1000 Mixtecos living in four concentrated areas. There
are over 3000 in Central Alabama and an estimated 100,000 currently in the United States.
They have been in our area for at least 10-15 years. Our churches began recognizing them
around 2007.

MINISTRY NEEDS

Some thoughts on how to reach this people group.

We need heart change. We must look at their culture, see
who they are, and how they live. The methods we use to
share the gospel have to be tremendously different!
We must be willing to invest in relationships. There are
language and cultural barriers that must be overcome.
We must be willing to meet THEIR needs, not OUR
perception of their needs. The Mixtecos have practical Attendees discuss strategy and direction as they
needs such as ESL classes, reaching the men, and help
move forward in reaching the Mixtec People.
with immigration.
We must be a friend most of all! When someone new comes to your home, church, or moves to
Montgomery, we try to be hospitable and help them navigate the transition process. It is the
same for this people group.
We must be willing to share the gospel in word and
deed. It cant be one or the other.
God has opened a door for Montgomery to share
the gospel with them. What a privilege for us!
