Ball Valve Basics

Ball Valve

A quarter turn (90) valve with a spherical component, ball/sphere

Ball controls the flow through it
Has a hole, or port, through the middle
Valve open - When the hole is in line with both ends of the valve, flow will occur
Valve closed - When the hole is perpendicular to the ends of the valve, flow is
blocked

Design Basics
Trunnion Mounted

Floating

Ball is fixed on a vertical axis by trunnions

Sealing achieved by spring loaded seats
Suitable for larger sizes and higher
pressures

Ball is free to float in the body cavity

Sealing achieved by ball pressing on
downstream seat
Suitable for sizes smaller sizes and lower
pressures

Design Basics
Full Bore

Reduced Bore

Oversized ball
Hole in the ball is the same size as

from body in a case of accidental
pressure build up in the body
Available on all valves, floating and
trunnion type

Anti- static device

Spring loaded device inserted in stem

Ensures electrical conductivity between
body and trim
Available on all valves, floating and
trunnion type

Double Block and Bleed - DBB

When valve is in closed position provides a seal against pressure from both ends of the valve

Valve body cavity is able to be bled off to atmosphere

Split body design through a vent port, drain plug
Fully welded design through a blow down valve, monoblock valve

Secondary Emergency Sealing

Secondary sealing is available on:

Seats and stem
Standard feature for 6 ball valves and larger
Smaller than 4 ball valves is an optional feature (where applicable)
Valves are equipped with giant button grease injectors
Only used in cases of seal damage as emergency measure to ensure
tightness
Ball valves do not require secondary sealing under normal operation

Seat Design Floating Valves

Simple design
Soft sealing elements
Material section depending on ball valve pressure rating
Pressure #150 Pure PTFE
Pressure #300-#600 PTFE CG (Carbon Graphite)

Seat Design Trunnion Mounted Valves

Different seat configurations are available to cover different applications

Primary sealing elements: Viton, PTFE Cg, Peek

Secondary sealing: Emergency grease injection sealing

Simple Piston Effect - SPE

Low pressure sealing is achieved by spring loaded seats

High pressure sealing is assisted by pipeline pressure
Seats able to provide internal cavity relief

Double Piston Effect - DPE

Seats are pressure energised in both directions

Bi-directional sealing allows the seat to work either direction
Seats not able to provide internal cavity relief

Seat Design
Primary Metal Secondary Soft Seats - PMSS

Primary sealing is provided by soft sealing element

Secondary sealing is provided by metal to metal contact

Seat with Scrapper

Scrapper under the sealing element provides

Excellent cleaning of ball in applications that the medium tends to
adhere to the ball surface
Provides extra protection to the sealing element

Fire safe Design

Fire resistance ability of a valve when exposed to fire

In case of fire non fire safe materials will melt down
Resulting to medium leakage and potential spread of fire
Fire safe ball valves are certified according to API6FA/API607
Design has to ensure valve integrity for 30 minutes
Design uses metal-to-metal contact and graphite sealing as auxiliary measures

Extra Features
Locking Device

Allows the valve to be locked in open and closed

position
Available on manual operated valves
Available on gearbox operated valves

Limit Switch

Electrical device that gives remote signal indicating the

position of the valve
Usually fitted on the operator
Available on manual operated valves
Available on gearbox operated valves

Extra Features
Fire Protection of Actuators
Fire boxes
Fire blankets
