Dear Friends,
I have a confession to make I think about you in the shower.
Now let me explain! I am not really a morning person and I need
that morning shower to waken and energize me. Im sure some of you can
relate. But, then many of you probably rise early to devote time to God
and to reflect on your day. My time of reflection just seems to happen in
the shower! My mind is uncluttered, and the things that are important or
need my energy, seem to rise to the surface during this time. If only there
was a way to jot down notes!
I have found myself more and more over the past few months,
thinking about our struggles here at Zions. Many times I have picked up a magazine, and been
drawn to an article that seemed to talk to me about reaching out to others in ways that might seem
a little unconventional. Not just those in poverty or extreme circumstances, but also those who are
walking the same path as I. We all need ministered to not just in our times of need, but on a daily
basis. Something as simple as smiling at the person you pass in the aisle of the grocery store,
sending a birthday card to a friend or loved one, picking up the phone and having a conversation
with a friend or loved one think about the little things you can do for the morale of those around
you. You can show Gods love every minute of every day.
I choose to think of this time period as a challenge to all of us, to step outside our comfort
zones and try something new. Or, maybe just try something old I recently read an article related
to the past practice of front porch sitting - Im sure most of us can remember a simpler time in our
lives when that was a daily pleasure. You could smile and wave at a neighbor, watch children play
outside, walk the dog, the list goes on. Now, instead of large front porches from which you can see
your neighborhood, we have retreated to the back patios and decks with privacy fences. We have
closed ourselves off from our neighborhood and community, literally and figuratively.
How can we put ourselves back on that front porch? My hope is that as we go forward in this
New Year, our Outreach & Evangelism Ministry Team can help with that process we have some
outside the box ideas coming your way. Please pray about how God would use you in these ministries, and how your community needs you, within the four walls of Zions, in the city of Defiance, in
NW Ohio, and beyond. Come join us on the front porch!!

News from the Northwestern Ohio Synod Office

There is a newly formed Synod Profile Task Force preparing for a new season in the
life of the Northwestern Ohio Synod.
Bishop Lohrmann has served our Synod well and has felt the nudge of the Holy Spirit to enter into retirement from his Bishop's call at the end of his current term. This
means there is a need to spend time preparing for a new Synod Bishop including
looking at what qualities are needed in the next Bishop, how the election will take
place, and how we will say our farewells and our hellos.
The synod council has authorized a Synod Profile Task Force to help begin the process of preparing to specifically look at what qualities are needed in the next Bishop. Members of the Synod Profile Task Force are Pam Kensler, Pastor Doug
Meyer, Bethany Rice, Kathryn Deeds, Jason Frederick, Pastor Beth Ferne
Johnson, Pastor Ed Strietelmeier, Linda Ewing, John Henry, and Pastor Jody
Rice (Chairperson).
The Task Force met for the first time in November and spent time outlining how they
will proceed in the coming months. You can look for periodic updates from the Task
Force and should expect to see surveys appearing in January. These surveys will
help us determine what leadership is necessary to move our Synod forward and continue the important work of being the Lutheran Church in Northwestern Ohio, and
without full participation will not allow us to be representative of the many people
that make up our Synod.
A final report from the Synod Profile Task Force will be shared at the upcoming Synod Assembly in May where we will learn more about the discernment process that
will unfold prior to the Bishop's election at the Synod Assembly in 2016.
Please hold the Task Force in prayer as they begin to prepare our synod for a new
season.
In partnership,
Pam Kensler, Synod Council Secretary

oil. On behalf of Laura, Gwen and myself, we thank you for your ongoing generosity.

DEACON SUPPORT TEAM

All members should be aware of their deacon and hopefully have met him or her to discuss any concerns or questions you may have had. Your deacons have a sincere interest in serving your needs
and encourage you to bring your needs to the attention of Pastor, the deacon group or council whichever is appropriate. In turn, we trust you have an equally sincere interest in getting to know your deacon as a present and future friend and confidant. We also want to emphasize the importance of
speaking with Pastor whenever the need arises. He wants to know your concerns to help provide a
solution or answers to your questions. He remains the best resource within our congregation to share
wisdom and knowledge.
Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to listen and we turn to our deacon. In our bi-monthly meetings, the nine deacons discuss a variety of topics concerning the spiritual welfare of the congregation. Most importantly we are available for you
when your needs might require someone to talk with other than Pastor Tim.
We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zions Lutheran Church and we encourage
you to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises. Please call the church office for any assistance.
