1. Introduction
The 2H34 Series relay is a frequency monitoring relay with four stages of adjustable frequency pick
up & drop out points. Each frequency set point can be set for under or over frequency operation &
has an independent time delay driving an output relay. An under voltage lockout is used to disable
the four frequency outputs when the voltage falls below a preset level. A single status input is used
to enable the four frequency sensing stages. A second status input is used to reset the front panel
latched LED trip indicators. Each of the four setting stages has a rate of change of frequency
(ROCOF) element with an independent time delay. The dF/dt element is available to operate as an
AND or an OR logic functions with the frequency element driving a common output contact per
stage. A separate Under Voltage & over Voltage stage are provided for alarm functions.

3. Application
Reduction in system frequency is an early indicator of impending system voltage collapse. This can
lead to plant & equipment damage if not taken off line or the frequency / voltage level restored.
The 2H34 relay can be used to provide four stages of load shedding as the frequency progressively
falls through the four independent setting stages. A rate of frequency change ROCOF element
(dF/dt), can also be established for each stage for the detection of very fast frequency loss due to
disconnection from the mains grid.

Exit to SET Page (Navigate to Main Menu)

The dF/dt settings in the dF/dt Menu are global settings applied to dF/dt functions.
6.2. b. 1. dF/dt Engines
Performance of the dF/dt elements is dependant on the sampling time used to calculate and
average the dF/dt reading.
To detect fast dF/dt rates, samples required are 2 (refer table 1). But, this is not suitable
for detecting low dF/dt rates. To detect very slow dF/dt rates, samples required are 5 (refer
table 1). But, this is not suitable for detecting high dF/dt rates.
dF/dt measurements are based in the difference between successive frequency readings
recorded on each cycle of the AC signal being monitored. To allow dF/dt setting flexibility
while remaining within the constraints described in Table 1, two dF/dt sampling engines A
and B are provided. The Engines A and B can be set as per the requirements.

6.2. b. 2. dF/dt Rejection Function

A dF/dt rejection setting is provided to reject dF/dt readings above a user defined
settings. This feature is used to reject spurious reading due to noise and transients to
ensure stability and improve security particularly when using short delay times.
When selecting dF/dt rejection setting, consideration should be given to the max
dF/dt rate expected on the system + 1Hz/sec.
As a separate dF/dt rejection setting is available for each dF/dt Engine, these may be set to
approximately twice the maximum dF/dt pick up setting used for that engine.

6.2. b. 3. Protection Application Example for dF/dt settings

This section provides detailed instructions for setting the 2H34 Relay protection functions.
If we take stage 1 settings of dF/dt = 0.25 Hz/sec for the fast dF/dt application, then the
settings are given by,
Stage 1 dF/dt Menu
Set Point
: 0.25 Hz/sec
Delay time
: 2 Sec
dF/dt Engine : A
dF/dt setting
df/dt
A Cycles

: Enabled
: 2 cycles

By considering the maximum dF/dt expected in the system 0.5 Hz/sec,

A Limit

: 1.5 Hz/Sec (dF/dt Rejection A)

A minimum dF/dt element operating time is dependant on the sample time settings which
determines the dF/dt measurement time shown in table 1. The actual operating time for
each stage is the sum of the dF/dt measurement time + the dF/dt stage time delay setting
+/- timing error.
For the above mentioned dF/dt settings,
Operating time = 70msec + 2 sec + / - 30 msec = 2.07 sec +/ - 30 msec

6.2. b. 4. dF/dt Function Logic Options

Two global options are available.
The OR logic function requires either the frequency step element OR the dF/dt element to
time out for the stage output relay to operate.
The AND logic function requires both the frequency step element AND the dF/dt element to
time out for the stage output relay to operate.
Note: This depends on the firmware installed in the relay based on the Ordering input.

7. Commissioning Instructions
7.1. Required Test Equipments
The following equipment will be required to perform commissioning tests on the 2H34 relay.

500V Insulation resistance test set

Variable A.C. voltage sources with a means of varying the Frequency or Voltage
(e.g. Vairac. Ideally, a portable relay test set e.g. Doble, Omicron etc)
Time interval meter
A.C. Voltmeter
D.C. supply with nominal voltage within the working range of the relays D.C.
auxiliary supply rating
Continuity tester (e.g. multimeter)

7.2 Inspection
Ensure that all connections are tight and in accordance with the relay wiring diagram
and the scheme diagram. Check if the relay is correctly programmed and the relay is
fully inserted into the case.
7.3 Applying Settings
The relay settings for the particular application should be applied before any secondary
testing is started.
Settings can be entered into the relay using the keypad on the front of the relay or they
can be sent to the relay, from a file, using a portable PC and MATRIX software
package.
7.4 Precautions
Before testing commences the relay should be isolated from the voltage transformers in
line with the local site procedures. The closing and alarm circuits should also be
isolated where practical.
Ensure that the correct d.c. auxiliary voltage is applied to the circuit. See the relevant
scheme diagrams for the relay connections.
7.5 Testing
7.5.1. Insulation Test
When required, insulation tests to check the relay and associated wiring can be
performed using a 500V electronic insulation resistance test set. The wiring may be
tested between:1. All electrically isolated circuits.
2. All circuits to earth.

12

Accessible terminals of the same circuit should be connected together and deliberate
circuit earthing links removed for the tests. Normal connections must be restored after
testing. Satisfactory values for the various readings above depend upon the amount of
wiring concerned. Where considerable multi-core wiring is involved a reading of 2.5 to
3.0 M can be considered satisfactory. For short lengths of wiring higher values can be
expected. A value of 1.0 M should not be considered satisfactory and should be
investigated.
We do not recommend a 2KV site pressure test on the secondary wiring with relays
connected. If this has to be carried out then, as above, deliberate earth links must be
removed.
7.5.2. Commissioning Tests
Scheme Test
If the settings have been checked, the external wiring of the status inputs and output
relays verified and the relay measures satisfactorily then the relay can be considered to
be working to its design requirements. It will operate correctly, to the performance
claims, and its operation under all service conditions is guaranteed.
However, the relay should be commissioned with the actual settings calculated for the
particular scheme.
Voltage Input Tests
This test checks that the voltage measurements are within acceptable tolerances. Apply
rated ac volts to each of the voltage input circuits of the relay, in turn, using the ac
variable voltage source or the portable relay test set. Using multimeter, check the
voltage at relay terminals. This should equal the voltage displayed on the relays
secondary voltage display.
