BOTIKA NG BARANGAY

In 2004, the PITC-Pharma Inc. (PPI), in coordination with the DOH and the FDA, launched the
Botika ng Bayan (BNB) program which entails legally qualified privately-operated retail outlets
nationwide to provide consumers low-cost and high-quality medicines.
The BnBs were mandated to sell low-priced generic over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and, originally, 2
prescription drugs (amoxicillin and cotrimoxazole). Later, the number of drugs was increased, with each
BnB being able to sell a selection from a list of around 35 OTC generic medicines and household
remedies, and 7 prescription drugs. Today, BnBs can sell up to 40 essential OTC drugs and 8 prescription
drugs (NCPAM, n.d.).
The rest of the DOH A.O. defines the general and specific guidelines with respect to: (a) handling
procedure for the initial deliveries of drugs procured through the PITC; (b) BnB responsibilities of
Proponent LGUs; (c) stocks replenishment orders from the BnBs; (c) BnB supplier eligibility and
accreditation; (d) BnB drug price determination for stock replenishments; (e) fund management
conditions for the BnBs; (f) rational drug use; and (g) project monitoring.
Program goals:
To promote equity in health by ensuring the availability and accessibility of affordable, safe and
effective, quality essential drugs to all, with priority for marginalized, underserved, critical and hard to
reach areas. And also, This aims to provide accessibility of affordable medicines to the barangays which
had been among the hindrances in achieving good health and favorable morbidity or mortality of the
people.
Accomplishments:

There are already 21 operational botikas in the barangays. Thru the LGUs fund & allocation the
people were able to avail cheaper medicines.
Established Botika ng Barangay to remote areas.
Hired Pharmacist which started on October 1, 2010
Conducted 4 day training on Herbal Medicine Processing last September 21-24, 2010
participated by BHW of 22 barangays.
Conducted inventory to all Botika ng Barangay Outlet

Affordability:

Prices of essential medicines that can be bought in a BnB outlet ranges from as low as P0.50
centavos (Paracetamol) to P2.50 (amoxicillin) compared to its counterpart in other drugstores
which retails at P4.00 and P5.00, respectively.

If a minimum wage earner were to be stricken with diarrhea, relief can come cheap from the
Department of Healths Botika ng Barangay (BnB) outlets, where a 2-milligram capsule of
generic loperamide would cost only P1.05.
The BnB price is vastly lower than what loperamide costs in commercial drugstoresP4.10 for
generic and P14 for branded.

Acceptability:
This study determined the contributions of the Botika ng Barangay to the improvement of
family living standards. Findings revealed that the BnB recipients level of acceptance was generally high.
They utilized the BnB products as the need arises. They were satisfied of the BnB services in terms of
product line, health-related effects, and cost and personnel services. The acceptance of the residents on
the BnB services implies an awareness of the importance of these drug outlets for addressing their
health needs. This has also erased the notion that residents do not like BnB drugs because the medicines
are not effective. However, acceptance may only be on the cognitive level of the residents, the best way
to measure the depth of their acceptance is to determine the frequency at which they have patronized
the BnB products. Hence, the extent of utilization of BnB products was determined. On a positive
perspective, the presence of the BnB is helpful indeed to the community since the common illnesses
addressed to by the BnB services occur as an emergency case, thus, the accessibility of BnB services is
indeed a great convenience for the respondents without additional cost of transportation to acquire the
needed medicines.
Availability:
The BnB outlet should be initially identified, evaluated, and selected by the concerned CHD,
approved by the National Drug Policy-Pharmaceutical Management Unit 50, and specifically licensed by
the Bureau of Food and Drugs to sell, distribute, offer for sale, and/or make available low-priced generic
home remedies, over-the-counter drugs, and two selected, publicly known prescription antibiotic drugs
(i.e., amoxicillin and cotrimoxazole). Other medicines that can be purchased from a BnB outlet are
paracetamol, mefenamic acid, salbutamol, multivitamin capsules and syrups, oresol, metoprolol,
ascorbic acid, metformin, glibenclamide, and Food and Drugs Authority-approved herbal medicines like
lagundi and sambong. A BnB is put up in a barangay by the LGU with P25,000 worth of medicines. Along
with this financial support is a counterpart fund for the physical structure, funding for training of
operators, and provision of BnB supervising pharmacists.

This picture describes about the current health situation in the country which is the Dengue fever.
Dengue is fast emerging pandemic-prone viral disease in many parts of the world. It is the most
common mosquito-borne viral disease of humans that in recent years has become a major international
public health concern. Millions of cases of dengue infection occur worldwide each year. Dengue fever is
most common in Southeast Asia and the western Pacific islands, but the disease has been increasing
rapidly in Latin America and the Caribbean.Researchers are working on dengue fever vaccines, but the
best prevention for now is to reduce mosquito habitat in areas where dengue fever is common.

This picture describes about the current health situation in the country which is the chikungunya
disease. There have been recent outbreaks of CHIKV associated with severe illness. CHIKV causes an
illness with symptoms similar to dengue fever. CHIKV manifests itself with an acute febrile phase of the
illness lasting only two to five days, followed by a prolonged arthralgic disease that affects the joints of
the extremities. The pain associated with CHIKV infection of the joints persists for weeks or months, or
in some cases years. Chikungunya has plagued other parts of the world particularly Asia and Africa
for decades, becoming more prevalent in recent years. The virus is generally not lethal and cant pass
from person to person. But the pain it brings can be horrible some who have weathered its wrath
have said they wished the virus had killed them.
