supplies last.
Te frst of the now common homefront war flms fnds three
soldiers coming home to small town midwestern America after
WWII. What follows is one of the best and most heartbreaking
human dramas of all-time. A war flm without a single battle,
a cinematic story that didnt have a decent comparison piece
until decades later with COMING HOME and THE DEER
HUNTER.
THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES was truly ahead of its
time in the medium of flm. Its direct, emotional, sentimental
without pandering.
THE OVERNIGHTERS (2014)
Opens November 7th
In the tiny town of Williston, North Dakota, tens of thousands
of unemployed hopefuls show up with dreams of honest work
and a big paycheck under the lure of the oil boom. However,
busloads of newcomers chasing a broken American Dream step
into the stark reality of slim work prospects and nowhere to
sleep. Te town lacks the infrastructure to house the overfow
of migrants, even for those who do fnd gainful employment.
Over at Concordia Lutheran Church, Pastor Jay Reinke is
driven to deliver the migrants some dignity. Night after night,
he converts his church into a makeshift dorm and counseling
center, opening the churchs doors to allow the Overnighters
(as he calls them) to stay for a night, a week or longer. Tey
sleep on the foor, in the pews and in their cars in the church
parking lot. Many who take shelter with Reinke are living on
societys fringes and with checkered pasts, and their presence
starts afecting the dynamics of the small community. Te
congregants begin slinging criticism and the City Council
threatens to shut the controversial Overnighters program
down, forcing the pastor to make a decision which leads to
profound consequences that he never imagined.
WHY DONT YOU PLAY IN HELL (2013)
Opens November 14th
Master flmmaker Sion Sono (Love Exposure; Cold Fish)
describes his frenzied, gleeful new masterpiece as an action
flm about the love of 35mm. Based on a screenplay he wrote
nearly ffteen years ago, Why Dont You Play In Hell? is among
Sonos very best work, as his trademark excess and outrageous-
ness is infused with an afection for the previous century of
Japanese cinema. Tis is Sion Sono with his talent and unique
vision completely unleashed.
Teres a war going on, but that wont stop the inexperienced
but eager wannabe flm crew Te Fuck Bombers from follow-
ing their dreams of making the ultimate action epic. Ten years
ago, yakuza mid-boss Ikegami led an assault against rival don
Muto. Now, on the eve of his revenge, all Muto wants to do is
complete his masterpiece, a feature flm with his daughter in
the starring role, before his wife is released from prison. And
Te Fuck Bombers are standing by with the chance of a life-
time: to flm a real, live yakuza battle to the death...on 35mm!
Endlessly irreverent and wildly, hilariously visceral, WHY
DONT YOU PLAY IN HELL? is a Tarantino-esque ode to
the yakuza flms of yore, and features an over-the-top, blood-
soaked fnale for the ages.

Girlie Night: 13 GOING ON 30 (2004)
Tis flm features the greatest fantasies of a 13-year-old girl:
a makeover montage in a gigantic closet, a high power job
working at a fashion magazine, a massive slumber party and, of
course, a totally cute guy. Te cast is top notch, with Jennifer
Garner perfectly embodying her inner teen, Judy Greer serving
up some major sass (like she does) and Mark Rufalo being as
foxy and charming as hes ever been. Tis delightful cinematic
concoction is better than a pack of Razzles, so join us at Girlie
Night, where well all experience the thrill of being thirty, firty
and thriving.
AFGA Presents: BOXERS OMEN (1983, 35mm)
In the late 70s and early 80s Hong Kongs legendary Shaw
Brothers studios unleashed a slew of gross-out horror movies
about the exploits of black magicians in contemporary South-
east Asia. None is more goopy, more visceral, or more insane
than this one. Called psychedelic in its excess by author Pete
Tombs, BOXERS OMEN throws elements of THE THING,
POLTERGEIST, HOLY MOUNTAIN, Italian horror and
kung-fu revenge into a bubbling cauldron, eats the resulting
brew, vomits that up, seasons it with gratuitous nudity, roto-
scope efects and rubber monsters, then eats that too.
Monday Night Thread Up:
THE HIDDEN (1987, 35mm)
A pre-TWIN PEAKS Kyle MachLachlan plays a pre-Dale Coo-
per FBI agent partnered up with that guy from Flashdance
Michael Nouri, on the hunt for a body-snatching humanoid
alien with a taste for fast cars and fast food on the streets of LA.
Mixing equal parts buddy-cop dynamic, paranoia induced sci-f
and Regan-era hyper-violence, THE HIDDEN is surprisingly
smart genre cinema that doesnt skimp on the things we love
most: high body counts and loud music.
Fangoria Presents: NEAR DARK (1987, 35mm)
In this 1987 honky-tonk horror fest directed by Kathryn Big-
elow, Adrian Pasdar stars as a simple country boy content with
working the family farm. When a dusty RV pulls into his small
mid-western town and Mae (Jenny Wright), a dazzling beauty,
walks into his life, he fnds himself drawn into the tight-knit
world of a clan of redneck nosferatu. ALIENS co-stars Henrik-
sen, Janette Goldstein and Bill Paxton reunite as vampires in
search of a good time and blood to spill.
Video Vortex: ROBOT NINJA (1989)
Hosted by Matt Desiderio (Horror Boobs) and Mike Hunchback
(Seminal Psychosis). Bring your tapes! Well be set up for a tape
trade, with rare VHS tapes also available for sale.
William Todd stars as Leonard Miller, a comic book artist who
has recently allowed a corporation to turn his gritty superhero
character ROBOT NINJA into a lousy mainstream bore, leav-
ing the artist totally defeated. After witnessing a gang commit
horrifc acts of violence, Miller decides to take the character
back the only way he can ... by becoming him. With his sanity
quickly drifting away, Miller descends into a maelstrom of ven-
geance comparable to Abel Ferraras MS. 45 or Cravens LAST
HOUSE ON THE LEFT with all the blade-fashing, blood-
letting and face-smashing a gorehound could hope for.
BATMAN (1989, 35mm)
You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?
Dont spend your evenings sitting at home wondering where
Batman gets all those wonderful toys, come to the Alamo
Drafthouse and witness a night of caped crusader caterwauling.
Watch as Bruce Wayne channels his multitude of issues (and
were talking emotional, not bagged and boarded), dons a cowl
and cape and puts the hammer to the Te Joker.
Tis is Batmania at its prime before you were Kissed by a
Rose or sufered the sigh of bat-nipples. In this 1989 Batman
masterpieces, youll get your fair share of Prince tunes and all
the Tim Burton-conducted tight black leather madness you can
throw a Batarang at.
DAVID BOWIE IS (2014)
Tis flm takes the audience on an extraordinary journey
through the David Bowie is exhibition with special guests
including legendary Japanese fashion designer Kansai Yama-
moto, Pulp front-man Jarvis Cocker, and other collaborators,
to explore the stories behind some of the key objects that docu-
ment Bowies artistic career. Te exhibition curators, Victoria
Broackes and Geofrey Marsh, provide fascinating insight into
the most memorable music videos and original costumes, as
well as more personal items such as never-before-seen handwrit-
ten lyrics, album cover artwork, set designs and diary entries,
which reveal the creativity and evolution of Bowies ideas.
GONE WITH THE WIND (1939)
In the words of Beyonce, diva is the female version of a hus-
tler. And no one exemplifes that better than Scarlett OHara.
Unlike most feminist icons, Scarlett is severely fawed, and thats
exactly why she has gained a permanent place in the collective
hearts of women the world over. Sure, shes drop dead gorgeous,
but in the ways that matter, Scarlett is a typical gal. Shes pas-
sionate and prone to emotional outbursts, not to mention the
fact that shes obsessed with a total loser.
In spite (or perhaps because) of her fckle heart and fair for
the melodramatic, Scarlett is driven to be extraordinary, which
often results in a fagrant rebellion against the social order. Shes
willful and much too strong for the 19th century South, and
even when she meets her romantic match, she refuses to back
down. Im not cornered, she proclaims. Youll never corner
me, Rhett Butler. Or frighten me
OPEN WINDOWS (2014)
Nick (Elijah Wood) is excited to discover that hes won a dinner
date with his favorite actress, Jill Goddard (Sasha Grey). But
when Jill refuses to honor the contest, her manager Chord (Neil
Maskell) makes an ofer he cant refuse: the ability to view Jill
secretly via computer.
Nick begins watching the unknowing star on her webcam, not
realizing that this decision will put both himself and Jill at risk
as they enter a terrifying world of cat-and-mouse where noth-
ingand no oneare as they seem.
DARK CITY (1998)
Stylish flm noir and insane pre-Matrix sci-f from director Alex
Proyas, DARK CITY was a pretty big disappointment when
it frst debuted at the box ofce back in 98. People werent
ready to give up their grip on reality just yet. But like BLADE
RUNNER time has been kind to DARK CITY as an entire
generation has found it through home video and repeterory
screenings. A cult has risen up and now DARK CITY is almost
essential viewing for awesome things to come out of the 90s.
THE FIFTH ELEMENT (1997, 35mm)
Nothing tops a cocksure-as-ever Bruce Willis as a retired elite
commando being pulled out of retirement to defend the Earth
from ABSOLUTE EVIL. Tiny Lister plays the hugest black
president ever (long before being a black president was cool),
and Gary Oldman goes for broke in one of his wackiest perfor-
mances ever. ANDif thats not enough, you got Chris Tucker
in a rare non-Rush Hour role. Oh...and Milla Jovovichs as an
ass kicking heroin/ultimate weapon of destruction.
LOGANS RUN (1976)
Sure, some of the elements of LOGANS RUN can be seen as
cheesy and dated, like say those unisex costumes and shopping-
mall-of-the-future scenery (much of which was actually shot
in Texas, so lets not laugh too hard, eh), but this slice of
dystopian 70s sci-f is still thought-provoking and massively
entertaining -- right up there with other great entries of that
decade, like PLANET OF THE APES. Te story is set in a
gleaming distant future where humanity has taken refuge in
massive domed cities where they live lives of infnite leisure and
pleasure. Te catch? No one is allowed to live past the age of 30.
MAD MAX TRILOGY (35mm)
George Millers uncompromising vision of an apocalyptic future
set in the wastelands of Australia. Society is in total decay and
homicidal maniac gangs rule the barren Earth. Ten, when
hoped seemed lost and anarchy prevailing, the fery decaying
soil opened up and gave birth to the hardest man to have ever
walked the Earth, Max Rockatansky, a man who drinks gasoline
and eats bullets. Witness as he turns from baby-faced cop to
judge, juror and executioner after his best friend, wife and baby
are killed. Learn the secrets of why we call him Mad Max as he
lays down judicious force on all who oppose him. Watch society
as you know it crumble before your very eyes as the toughest
hero cinema has ever seen obliterates humans in every way
imaginable.
V FOR VENDETTA (2005)
Similar to 1984 or FAHRENHEIT 451, the story has all the
trappings of a solid dystopian future: evil government, compla-
cent public and a hero willing to risk it all for a single message
of hope. While the comic book series was originally published
between 1982 and 1985, the flmmakers have updated the
story for todays political climate. Temes such as intolerance,
invasion of privacy and repression of minority thought are all
timeless, but specifc political hot topics such as Islam, gay
marriage and Avian fu fnd their way into the flm and resonate
with todays audiences.
BUCKAROO BANZAI (1984, 35mm)
With Billy Vera live!
Unknowns back in 1984, the main characters all went on to
major celebrity: Ellen Barkin, Jef Goldblum, John Lithgow,
Christopher Lloyd and others. Billy Vera, aka Pinky Carruthers,
scored a worldwide number one record with At Tis Moment,
the song that brought together Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan
in Family Ties, and hes been awarded a star on Hollywood
Blvd in recognition of his flm and television success.
On November 13th, Pinky invades the Alamo to personally
introduce a special showing of Buckaroo, with post-show
Q&A, meet & greet, and autographs. Billy Vera is a Westchester
homeboy who looks forward to reconnecting with his local fans
and a super-fun evening of Banzai madness!
EVOLUTION OF A CRIMINAL (2014)
With director Director Darius Clark Monroe in person!
How does a 16 year-old evolve into a bank robber? In EVOLU-
TION OF A CRIMINAL, flmmaker Darius Clark Monroe
asks this very questionabout himself. After seeing his mother
and stepfather struggle to make ends meet while living outside
of Houston, Texas, Monroe decided to help them by robbing a
bank with two friends.
Returning to his neighborhood several years after the crime,
Monroe creates an incredibly intimate and personal journey of
refection and forgiveness while examining lower class struggles,
the desperation of a teen under pressure, and the emotional
impact that rippled in the aftermath of that day.
THE HUNGER GAMES MARATHON
See the original HUNGER GAMES and CATCHING FIRE,
and be among the frst to see the brand new MOCKINGJAY:
PART 1!
In MOCKINGJAY: PART 1, Katniss Everdeen is in District 13,
after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leader-
ship of President Coin and the advice of her trusted friends,
Katniss spreads her wings as she fghts to save Peeta and a na-
tion moved by her courage.
SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER,
UNCUT SING-ALONG (1999)
Trey Parker and Matt Stone had the balls to think they could
bring their poorly animated, foul mouthed Colorado kids to
the big screen...and they were fucking right! Paramount at one
point asked them if they could make a PG-13 flm instead of
the hard R that this was sure to receive, but they steadfastly
refused and in so doing they created the best selling R-rated
animated feature ever.
So bring the whole family down to your local Alamo Draft-
house for this heart warming tale of a boy who dies by lighting
his own farts on fre, his friend who uses profanity to help send
Saddam Hussein back to Hell, their buddy who just wants to
fnd the clitoris so he can win the heart of the elementary school
girl hes in love with, their Jewish friend who cant stand up to
his bitchy mother, and a whole bunch of damned flthy Canadi-
ans. Its guaranteed to warp your fragile little mind!
