UniFormat is a construction classification system published by the Construction Specifications Institute to organize project information, especially for estimating. It structures data into nine major elements like substructure and shell that are further divided into sub-levels for additional detail. UniFormat was originally developed as an ASTM standard and allows for comparing different building systems and organizing early design phases.

UniFormat
UniFormat, which is published by the Construction Specifications Institute, is a way of organizing
construction information by major system. It is used most often as a way of organizing a project estimate because it allows easy comparisons of different systems. In addition, UniFormat is sometimes used during early design phases in what is called a Preliminary Project Description. Prior to being published by the Construction Specifications Institute, UniFormat was developed as ASTM standard E1557 and was named UniFormat II. It remains a valid ASTM reference. UniFormat is organized into nine major categories (Level 1), each of which are then broken down into four additional sub-levels (Level 2 through Level 5) that add further detail as necessary. Below is a list of the Level 1 and Level 2 elements. Introduction 10 - Project Description 20 - Owner Development 30 - Procurement Requirements 40 - Contracting Requirements 50 - Project Description Element A - Substructure A10 - Foundations A20 - Subgrade Enclosures A30 - Unassigned A40 - Slabs-On-Grade A50 - Unassigned A60 - Water and Gas Mitigation A70 - Unassigned A80 - Unassigned A90 - Substructure Related Activities Element B - Shell B10 - Superstructure B20 - Exterior Vertical Enclosures B30 - Exterior Horizontal Enclosures B40 - Unassigned B50 - Unassigned B60 - Unassigned B70 - Unassigned B80 - Unassigned B90 - Unassigned Element C - Interiors C10 - Interior Construction C20 - Interior Finishes C30 - Unassigned C40 - Unassigned C50 - Unassigned C60 - Unassigned C70 - Unassigned C80 - Unassigned C90 - Unassigned Element D - Services D10 - Conveying D20 - Plumbing D30 - Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) D40 - Fire Protection D50 - Electrical D60 - Communications D70 - Electronic Safety and Security D80 - Integrated Automation D90 - Unassigned Element E - Equipment and Furnishings E10 - Equipment E20 - Furnishings E30 - Unassigned E40 - Unassigned E50 - Unassigned E60 - Unassigned E70 - Unassigned E80 - Unassigned E90 - Unassigned Element F - Special Construction F10 - Special Construction F20 - Facility Remediation F30 - Demolition F40 - Unassigned F50 - Unassigned F60 - Unassigned F70 - Unassigned F80 - Unassigned F90 - Unassigned Element G - Sitework G10 - Site Preparation G20 - Site Improvements G30 - Liquid and Gas Site Utilities G40 - Electrical Site Improvements G50 - Site Communications G60 - Unassigned G70 - Unassigned G80 - Unassigned G90 - Miscellaneous Site Construction Element Z - General Z10 - General Requirements Z20 - Unassigned Z30 - Unassigned Z40 - Unassigned Z50 - Unassigned Z60 - Unassigned Z70 - Taxes, Permits, Insurance and Bonds Z80 - Unassigned Z90 - Fees and Contingencies
