Match Report;
Cougars finish strong with a win over lack lustre Dolphins -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gosford,NSW- The Perth Cougars scored an upset win over the play off bound Central Coast Dolphins. It was the last game of the regular season and it was difficult to tell who was going to the finals and who had missed out as Perth dominated this game from the opening kick off to the final whistle.
Don't be fooled either as Tim Sheens kept most of his starters in as the Dolphins tried to find some form before the Play offs. This back fired massively.
Perth were buoyed by the performance of Quarterback Lance Drayton who had been named as the new starter to replace Tom Brady at the New England Patriots. He threw 16/23 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown. he also added a rushing score to his repertoire as Perth fans must have wondered where this was earlier in the year.
On the other hand the Dolphins came out and tried an up tempo, no huddle offense and it failed miserably as Perth shut down the screens by either doubling the outside man or using well organised zones.
The opening score came after Hunt was intercepted trying to force one of the jet screens but Marcus McCauley played through the traffic and jumped all over the pass. 5 plays later and Drayton connected with Tight End Josh Piatek in the corner. The Cougars then connected on back to back field goals to go in at halftime 13-0 up.
After holding the Dolphins on downs, Drayton added to his CV when he dashed in to score himself to cap of another long 13 play drive. The Dolphins were down on energy, own on luck and down on a plan and when David Heneway fumbled the ball the Cougars drove it down for another field goal and the 22-0 lead. At this point Sheens gave it away and subbed in the back ups who had more success. Nathan Geia hooked up with Toby Rankin for a consolation and then hit Matt Tutahai for the 2 point score.
