Dave Severns Hurry Up Offense

Director of Player Development - Los Angeles Clippers
General Notes

When youre down late in games, what do you have in your offensive package / system
that allows you to get good shots quickly to get you back into the game?
The clippers may use this offense for 5-6 minute stretches at any point during the game
they call it 21
Hurry-up offense doesnt mean playing fast and out of control, it means playing with
good pace and good flow
The PG must advance the ball to operating area inside 4 seconds. In the NBA you are
always working against the clock
In the NBA teams run an average 80-90 pick and rolls every game
The spacing and rules help the pick and roll game be the toughest action to guard
The hardest aspect of pick and roll action to defend against is single side bump
o Teams runs all kinds of actions, false motion and misdirection just to end up in
single side bump
o Single side meaning a single defender having to bump the roll man with 2
players spaced weak side
o Defensively: all team try to ICE the side pick and roll and send the ball handler
to the single side defender. When the big rolls, there are now 2 defenders on
weak side helping on the roll
When in doubt, spread out: either drive & kick OR pick and roll
If youre pick and roll team run more little/big screens to get the bigs defender off

Floor Spots

Whichever side PG brings the ball to, the ball-side wing buttonhooks to catch the ball
straddling the 3-point line
o The wings: run wide and must look over their inside shoulder as they cross the
half-court line to locate the ball
Point guard: Volleyball line (between the lane line and sideline)
1st big: pro lane line on ball side
2nd big: weak side seam

Option 1: Chase (see diagrams)

Wing button hooks

Point guard pitches ahead and chases his pass for a hand-off
First big flare screens the wing to the top, then runs into a downhill pick and roll with
the PG and rolls to the basket
PG then makes the read: layup, jump shot, roll-man or drive & kick
Weak side: big-on-wing pin down on pass to the top

Option 2: Keep (see diagrams)

Same as above wing fakes the hand off and keeps the ball
First big runs into a pick and roll
Weak side: pin down as ball handler comes off
Ball handler makes the read: layup, jump shot, roll-man, shake action, weak side pin
down

Option 3: Dribble (see diagrams)

Same as above but pitch ahead pass is denied

PG dribbles at the wing who then flares to top
First big runs into a downhill pick and roll
Point guard makes the read

Option 4: Down (see diagrams)

Ball is reversed through the trailing big

Wing then back screens the PG to the basket
Big/wing dribble hand-off action
Weak side pin down on DHO
Ball handler makes reads: layup, jump shot, roll-man, shake action, weak side pin down

Option 5: At (must be a call see diagrams)

PG pitches ahead to the wing, wing keeps it, then dribble hand-offs with the big
The big (usually Blake Griffin) drives the ball downhill off the hand-off
