Another Exciting School Year Lies Ahead!

Dear Parents/Guardians,
I want to take a moment to welcome you back to what is sure to be a fun and exciting
school year! I had the pleasure of meeting and working with your child today and we had
a great time getting acquainted. I am eager and excited about the months ahead and look
forward to working closely with you this school year.
As you know, sixth grade is slightly different than what it has been in the past. This
year teachers are working in teams of two, so your child will have two different teachers
for their school subjects. In my team, I will teach Language Arts and Science, and Ms.
Conteh will teach Social Studies. Ms. Conteh will be teaching Advanced Math this year
so there is a possibility that your child will either have Mr. Gonzalez or Mr. Garcia for
math. Mrs. Baroan, is the in class support teacher, and will team up in both classrooms.
Our collaboration will benefit students and we are thrilled to all be
working together.
This week students will spend time getting familiar with our
classroom routines and procedures. We will also spend some time practicing conflict resolution techniques as our focus for this month is building and strengthening our classroom learning community.
Understanding how important our communication is, we have established
some routines and resources that will allow us to stay in touch and
keep you informed of whats going on in the classroom.
I am excited about
Each week, your child will receive their Tuesday Folder. This
folder will contain any graded quizzes, test or projects as well as
the school flyers and notices for the week. You will be asked
review the contents of the folder with your child and sign the form
labeled Tuesday Folder Parent Signature Log. On the first
Tuesday of every month you will also receive a news letter from
us (this is the first one) that will highlight school events and the
classroom agenda for the upcoming month.
I have also updated my class eBoard which will also display
information regarding school and community events, classroom
activities, assignments and projects your child is working on. I
will do my best to update the eBoard regularly. You can access
our eBoard through the teaneckschools.org website. Feel free
to contact me if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns.
Looking forward to seeing and hearing from you soon!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Gonzalez

Math 6

My Special Number Project

Math classes will begin the Connected Math Program with

the unit Prime Time . This unit focuses on understanding
numbers and numerical operations. Students will study
the basics of number theory as they explore factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers. Through this study
students will gain a solid foundation about numbers and
begin to recognize patterns and connections that will build
upon their knowledge for more complex math concepts.

Social Studies
In social studies we will explore a short unit on the Beginnings of Human Civilizations. In this section, students will
examine how archeologist learn about prehistoric people
during the period of time known as prehistory . Students
will also discover how geography impacted early civilizations and contributed to the development of cities.

For this unit, students will be assigned as we begin the unit

and will be due at the end of the unit. This project is primarily an at home project and student will be given very little, if any class time to work on the project so please encourage you child to get started on the project as soon as
possible. Students will receive the project overview, scoring rubric and an organizer next week. A copy of the project criteria will be uploaded onto my school eboard site as
well.

Science

In science, our first unit of study will begin with

minimum of 20 minutes a night.

Writing

What You Can do to Help

It is always pleasing to have parents who are willing to help.
This makes our job that much easier and believe me, what
ever you can do is greatly appreciated. The PTO usually requests that we have at least one class parent for each class. If
are willing to be a class parent, please contact us PTO as soon as
possible. The sixth grade team is also looking to do fundraising
in efforts to minimize the costs of school field trips. If you
have any ideas or would just like to lend a helping hand, please let
us know.
If you have not already done school supply shopping with your
child, here is a list of items they will need.
1 1 inch clear presentation binder for math
7 individual subject folders
7 individual composition books
Pencils/pens, erasers, post-it notes, ruler, tissues, notecards
We are looking forward to a fantastic year and hope to see all of
you on Tuesday September 15th at Back to School Night .
