On Aug. 20, Mt. Laurel kindergartener Lauren Mullin, 5, practiced her reading during the Mt. Laurel Librarys regular Paws for Reading
activity. Lauren sat and read with Judy Burr and 4-year-old registered therapy dog, Wilson, a bearded collie wheaten terrier mix. Lau-
ren read Wilson a book about starting kindergarten while Wilson was excited to listen.

to July 1 and runs through June

Board member Diane Blair

both sides made concessions to

A Mt. Laurel CVS was the lat-
est victim in a string of bomb
threats related to a growing tele-
phone scam.
On Aug. 28, the CVS on Route
38 was evacuated after an un-
known subject called the store
and said bombs had been placed
inside the building.
Police officials said the caller
asked the manager to load several
Green Dot MoneyPak debit cards
with $500 each and provide the
card numbers over the phone.
The caller threatened to detonate
the bombs if the manager did not
comply.
The store was evacuated and
searched, but no explosives were
found. Mt. Laurel Police later
traced the call to India.
The threat was found to be just
another case in a telephone scam.
Anonymous callers have been
phoning businesses across the
area with similar threats and de-
mands.
Lt. Stephen Riedener from the
Mt. Laurel Police said they are
fully aware of the scam, but did
not encounter a threat until the
CVS call.
This is the first actual one
where the manager was told to
follow their instructions,
Riedener said.
The biggest issue has been the
bomb threats. While explosives
were not found at the CVS, and
have not been found in other
cases, the police are forced to take
the threats seriously.
Public safety is always para-
mount, even if we think its a
scam to begin with, Riedener
said.
The scam is not the only one
out there. Riedener said there
have been a lot of different phone
scams happening in the past few
months. These include callers
posing as a government official or
PSE&G employee. In these cases,
the caller will call a residence and
ask them to send a Green Dot
MoneyPak card preloaded with
money. The caller will threaten to
shut off the residents electricity
or arrest them.
Riedener said police and utility
companies will never ask for a
Green Dot MoneyPak card from a
resident. To help convey this, the
police have used social media to

hirteen years have passed
since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks
on New York City and Wash-
ington, D.C.
Thats hard to believe.
Its hard to believe that it was 13
years ago that this country changed
forever.
Its hard to believe that it was 13
years ago that so many innocent lives
were lost.
Its hard to believe how much our
lives have changed in those 13 years
how heightened security at public
places, especially airports, is expected
and openly accepted; how a persons
privacy is not always private; how
farewell and welcome home celebra-
tions for servicemen and women seem
to be commonplace; and how, sadly, the
world is still dealing with terror.
There are so many other examples
to mention of how our lives have
changed since that fateful day 13 years
ago.
Here we are, more than a decade
later, with 9/11 as a memory for all of
us who lived it, and a history lesson
for those who didnt.
Thirteen years later, we should all
be proud of the way we are remember-
ing and honoring those who lost their
lives that day as well as their families,
and also the servicemen and women
and their families who so bravely
have volunteered to serve this country.
In addition to annual memorials put
on at the national level, local commu-
nities are playing a large part, too. Our
community, and others around us,
host 9/11 remembrances and memori-
als.
We should all be proud of ourselves
and our fellow citizens. But we should
not stop here just because we have
done well so far.
We should never forget what hap-
pened 13 years ago. We should always
pause and respect those who were
taken from us and those who fight for
our freedom.
And we should ensure that those
who werent alive 13 years ago, or were
too young to remember, are taught
about what happened that day, and
how it will continue to affect our lives
and theirs.
We will never forget.

Mt. Laurel schools have been focusing
on their science, technology, engineering
and mathematics program over the past
few years at the middle school level.
Now, the district is looking to filter more
of this curriculum into its gifted academic
program for elementary school students.
Sharon Vitella, director of curriculum,
instruction and assessment, said the dis-
trict spent a portion of the summer re-
vamping its pre-GAP and GAP curriculum
for first through fourth grades. Not only
did the district want to align the curricu-
lum closer to the Common Core standards,
but it also wanted to incorporate themes
from the middle school STEM program.
The new curriculum is technology-
based and geared to the 21st century way of
thinking, Vitella said.
Students in the program will engage in
more critical thinking and independent
study exercises. Students in first and sec-
ond grade will analyze their talents and
look at how they can impact people in their
community.
In third and fourth grades, students will
perform a My Place in This World inde-
pendent study where they will participate
in projects putting their analysis from first
and second grade into practice.
Vitella said these projects could range
from global events to economics. The goal
is to teach students how to apply their
knowledge to fix the problems in the world.
We want to focus on their responsibili-
ty in the community, Vitella said.
Technology will be a huge part of the
new curriculum. Students will have the op-
portunity to communicate with other stu-
dents around the world.
Gifted students dive deeper into technology

agreement. To offset the pay in-
crease, the MLEA made conces-
sions on health benefits. The
teachers reduced their opt-out al-
location and added a voluntary
health-care plan. The concessions
will allow the district to stay with-
in the 2 percent tax increase cap
over the next three years.
Members of the school board
said the agreement had a fair rep-
resentation of ideas from both
the district and the MLEA.
This is a deal that is fair to
both sides, board member Marc
Jones said.
MLEA President Doug Bozarth
echoed Jones statements about
the agreement.
The entire negotiations team
is thrilled with the agreement we
were able to reach with the Board
of Education, Bozarth said in an
email. We feel we achieved a fair
settlement given the current eco-
nomic times and restrictions
placed on such bargaining proce-
dures.
Bozarth added it was impor-
tant to the MLEA to reach an
agreement before classes began.
The MLEA approved the agree-
ment during a meeting on Sept. 2,
with 436 out of 450 members vot-
ing in favor of the new contract.
During a special meeting on
Sept. 3, the board of education
voted 8-0 in favor of the contract.
Board member Scott Jones was
absent.
The two sides reached a tenta-
tive agreement during the final
week of August after about eight
months of negotiations. Blair
said there were a number of dis-
agreements over the course of ne-
gotiations, but relations between
the two sides were never hostile.
All of our meetings were pro-
gressive, and even points of dis-
agreement were handled with
open discussion and an exchange
of facts, she said.
Superintendent Antoinette
Rath said the district has a very
solid relationship with the
MLEA, helping to make the nego-
tiations go as smoothly as possi-
ble.
Not all school districts can say
the same thing, she said.
The negotiations team, led by
Len Barker, feels that the negotia-
tions process was a productive
one, Bozarth said. The Mt. Lau-
rel Education Association contin-
ues to have a positive working re-
lationship with the Board of Edu-
cation.

Vitella said the students will
also do some beginner computer
coding to prepare them for mid-
dle school. The district added a
computer coding class for all
eighth-grade students this year.
The new performance task is
going to open up a wide range of
technology, Vitella said.
The GAP changes will extend
to the middle school level, as the
district will hold a learning sym-
posium in place of the invention
convention held in previous
years. Vitella said the symposium
will retain a lot of the same
themes the convention had. More
details about the symposium will
be released in the coming
months.

The following information was
provided by the Mt. Laurel Police
Department.
Mt. Laurel Police are investi-
gating an armed robbery of the
Verizon store on Dearborn Circle
that occurred at 10:10 a.m. on
Aug. 23. Two suspects entered the
store carrying umbrellas to
shield themselves from surveil-
lance video and wearing black
masks. While displaying hand-
guns, they forced all employees
and customers into the rear office
area. The employees
were forced into the
stock room where they
were ordered to fill
bags with cellular
phones. The phones
were valued at approximately
$70,000. The first suspect was de-
scribed as a male, approximately
five-feet 10-inches tall, 170 pounds,
with facial hair. The second sus-
pect was described as a male, ap-
proximately six-feet three-inches
tall, 250 pounds, also
with facial hair. The
suspects fled the store
via the rear door to-
ward Route 38.
Anyone with infor-
mation regarding the incident is
asked to contact the Mount Lau-
rel Police Department Criminal
Investigations bureau at (856) 234-
1414 ext. 1526 or the Confidential
Tip Line at (856) 234-1414 ext. 1599.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 41-
year-old man of the 87 block of
126th Street, Richmond Hill, N.Y.,
on Aug. 26 for hindering his own
prosecution. Subsequent to a
motor vehicle stop on Masonville
Road at 11:56 a.m., he provided
false information to police in an
attempt to avoid a traffic sum-
mons. The suspect was served
with criminal complaints and re-
leased pending a municipal court
hearing.
Two residents of the unit block
of Spinnaker Drive reported com-
puter criminal activity. The inves-
tigation revealed that counterfeit
debit cards were used to make
more than $3,000 in withdrawals
from each victims bank account.
The transactions occurred in Ne-
braska and Pennsylvania be-
tween Aug. 7 and Aug. 26.

Editors note: The following
poem was submitted by Gracia
Mackenzie Sproles, a fifth-grade
student at Hartford School.
Twas The Morning
Before School Started
Twas the morning before
school started,
When all through the town,
The parents were cheering, it
was a roaring sound!
The backpacks were hung on
the front door with care,
In hopes that the school bus
soon would be there.
Once all children were asleep,
The parents cheered and gave a
leap!
For in just a few hours,
The new day would come,
And all would awake by the
bright morning sun.
Kids would put on new clothes,
New shoes and a grin.
Then announce " I'm Ready for
school!"
Mother would snap a few pho-
tos,
And they'd be on there way,
For this was the first school
day!
Then as the kids rode away,
Mother would say-
"Happy first day!"

Riedener said.
Mt. Laurel Police have released
the following tips to help resi-
dents avoid falling for these
scams.
Be suspicious of callers who
demand immediate payment for
any reason.
Never wire money or provide
debit, credit or Green Dot Money-
Pak card numbers to someone
you dont know.
Know criminals like to use
the Green Dot cards because they
are untraceable and the crime
can be committed from anywhere
in the world.
Utility companies and govern-

you demanding immediate pay-
