Ruled Out Of Elections
Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra

Chaudhry has officially been ruled out
of next month's elections.
Reports say that of the 262 candidate
nominations put forward, 12 have been
rejected, including Mr Chaudhry.
The media reported that the leader of
the Fiji United Freedom Party, Jagath
Karunaratne, has also been ruled out of
contesting the September 17 poll.
Supervisor of elections Mohammed
Saneem has told Pacific Beat there
are several electoral or constitutional
requirements which can keep a
candidate off the ballot.
"If a person is bankrupt, or if a person is
disqualified by the court, or if a person
is not a resident of Fiji - does not have
Fijian citizenship," he said.
"We are going to verify the nominations
to seek compliance with the electoral
decree and the constitution, following
which we will convey to the parties the
candidates which have been successful
and also the candidates which have not
been successful.
"It's a candidate nomination - not a
party nomination - so if a candidate in a
party is not successful, other candidates
may still go through."
Labour Party leader Mahendra
Chaudhry is ineligible to stand because
of a recent conviction.

Receives 262 Nominations
The Fiji Elections Office has received a

total of 262 candidate nominations for
the September 17 general election.
This includes two independent candidates;
Roshika Deo and Umesh Chand.
Supervisor of Elections Mohammed

confirmed
receiving
nominations from all the 7 registered
parties and independent candidates for
the election before midday Monday.
FijiFirst: The party submitted their
nominations on Friday last week
and today Saneem confirmed to
FijiLive that Party general secretary
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum filed another
submission to substitute a nomination.
Fiji Labour Party (FLP): The party
submitted 42 nominations including
that of leader Mahendra Pal Chaudhry
who despite being convicted remains
positive about his chances.
No one will win 50 seats, we all know
that, were concentrating in certain
areas where we have support, we dont
want to spend our resources to be too
thin, thats the best strategy, Weve
never field 71 even before.
I filed my nomination too, the fight
is on, its not over yet, they can try as
hard as they want to, Ill keep fighting
them, Chaudhry said.
Fiji United Freedom Party (FUFP):
Party president and co-leader Jagath
Karunaratne said they had planned
to field seven names but today they
only submitted five nominations
for candidates. But one name was
rejected due to lost voter ID card and
the information could not be located
in FEO database this morning. We
now have 4 proposed candidates,

Karunaratne said.
National Federation Party (NFP): Party
general secretary Kamal Iyer confirmed
that they have lodged all 50 candidates
that they have named. The Elections
Office has accepted it in a provisional
basis and the final list will be published
tomorrow as per the requirements of the
Elections Decree, Iyer said.
He added they are confident that all
would go through.
One Fiji Party: Party general
secretary Sitiveni Kalou confirmed that
they have only submitted 14 names as
candidate nominees.
Kalou said this was because most of
their proposed candidates werent
living in Suva.
Theres a few that could not get
their documents prepared on time, we
couldnt get some in to Suva on time as
most candidates are not living in Suva.
But, were happy and sure that the 14
named will be able to make an impact,
Kalou said.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP):
Party general secretary Aman Ravindra
Singh confirmed that they also
submitted their 50 candidate names
and they will later announce the last
eight that were included as they had
only named 42 candidates.
Social Democratic Liberal Party
(SODELPA): Party General Secretary
Pio Tabaiwalu confirmed that the
Sodelpa nominated all 50 proposed
candidates and are confident that
they will all make it to the stand on
September 17.
Jagath Karunaratne Gives

Up NZ Citizenship
Fiji United Freedom Party president
and co-leader Jagath Karunaratne gave
up his New Zealand citizenship to
contest the September 17 elections.
Karunaratne was a dual citizenship holder
and under the 2013 constitution under
section 56 (2), dual citizenship holders
cannot be a candidate for election.
Speaking to the media, Karunaratne
confirmed he had given up one
to contest the elections alongside
three other from his party. The
names submitted by FUFP included
Nayagodamu Korovou, Manoj Kamal
and Viliame Tamanivalu.
Karunaratne said the party only
submitted four names because they
were focused on taking their vision to
the people of Fiji and they needed to
evaluate the acceptance of the vision
by the people. FUFP was formed
recently and new in the political arena,"
Karunaratne said.
"We are going through a learning
and building process and we should
be realistic in our goals and we are
confident on the number we have

submitted as our capability and capacity
to win. FUFP from its inception was
determined to play a supporting role to
the government that will be chosen and
formed in 2014."
He said parties' have proposed their
manifestos and confidence in forming
government, however for FUFP the
focus was to look at areas that needed
attention or new ideas and models
that could shape up the nation with
prosperity and harmony. We want
to work with any party that forms the
government and ensure that our vision
is also included in the policies of the
government.
If we are elected, that would mean
that it is the acceptance by the people
on what we have proposed and we will
push and work with the government of
the day to implement those policies."
Karunaratne said they decided on
contesting the elections to determine
whether the people have accepted their
vision and goals.

Pacific Islands Youth Suicide

One Of Worlds Highest
Suicide rates in the Pacific Islands are

some of the highest in the world and
have reached up to 30 per 100,000 in
countries such as Samoa, Guam and
Micronesia, double the global average,
with youth rates even higher.
On International Youth Day, which
this year focuses on Youth and Mental
Health, young Pacific Islanders have
highlighted the profound social and
economic challenges they face in a
rapidly changing world.
Youths committing suicide seem
to get younger and younger by the
year, Lionel Rogers of the Fiji-based
advocacy and support group, Youth
Champs for Mental Health, told IPS.
Stressors contributing to the growing
trends of suicide are unemployment,
social and cultural expectations, family
and relationship problems, bullying,
violence and abuse.
The Pacific Islands has an escalating
youth population, with 54 per cent of
people in the region now aged below
24 years and those aged 15-29 years
are at the greatest risk of taking their
lives, according to the Secretariat of
the Pacific Community (SPC).
Tarusila Bradburgh, co-ordinator of
the Pacific Youth Council, believes
that the burden of multiple issues
that affect young people in the Pacific
Islands is enormous and many are not
well-equipped to cope.
A decade ago there were an estimated
331,000 annual suicides in the region,
accounting for 38 per cent of the world
total.
Anne
Rauch,
organisational
development adviser for the Fiji
Alliance for Mental Health said, There
is [] significant under-reporting of
suicide deaths.
On outer islands and remote areas the
body is buried before an autopsy can
be performed. There is a lot of family
shame about suicide so doctors will
sometimes sympathetically report the
causes of death.
In 2012, there were 160 reported
suicides in Fiji with the majority under
25 years of age, but accurate statistics
are not available.
Under-funded and under-resourced
mental health services are struggling
to address the issue, with suicide
representing 2.5 per cent of the disease
burden in the Western Pacific region,
nearly double the rate of 1.4 per cent
worldwide.
According to a 2008 report by the nongovernmental organisation Foundation
of the Peoples of the South Pacific
International, a significant root cause
of young people taking their lives is
intergenerational conflict as modern
lifestyles based on individual freedom
and independence challenge centuries
of conformism to traditional Pacific
communal social hierarchies and
conventions of behaviour.
In the tiny central South Pacific territory
of Tokelau, located north of Samoa,
a national health department report

claims a significant factor in youth
suicide is relationship breakdowns,
including those between parents and
children.
There were 40 attempted suicides in
the territory, which has a population of
1500, during a 25-year period ending
in 2004, with 83 per cent of fatalities
involving people under 25 years, and
physical punishment of youth by their
elders contributing to 67 per cent.
Rauch added, There are an increasing
number of young people [committing]
suicide because of poor examination
results and failure to reach the academic
standards expected by parents.
An equal challenge facing the
vast majority of Pacific youth is
poor prospects of employment and
fulfillment of aspirations generated by
exposure to affluent global lifestyles
through the digital and mass media.
In the small economies of most
Pacific developing island states, high
population growth of up to 2.4 per
cent is far outpacing job creation, thus
greater access to education for many is
not translating into better chances of
gaining paid employment.
In the southwest Pacific Island state
of Papua New Guinea, there are an
estimated 80,000 school leavers each
year, but only 10,000 will secure
formal jobs.
Youth unemployment is an estimated
45 per cent in the neighbouring
Solomon Islands.
The United Nations Childrens Fund
(UNICEF) warns that denial of
economic and social opportunities
leads to frustrated young people and
the result can be a high incidence
of self-harm with the loss of the
productive potential of a large section
of the adult population.
According to SPC, actions to combat
the tragic fallout of youth suicide for
families, communities and a generation
that has an important role to play in
the regions future should include
measures to reduce the social stigma of
mental illness and build the capacity of
youth-friendly health and counselling
services.
Many youths refuse to seek assistance
from medical professionals due to the
stigma associated with suicide and
mental health, Rogers said.
This along with our culture of silence
has driven them further away and forced
them to suppress their emotions.
Bradburgh
advocates
for
all
stakeholders, including communities
and churches, to actively promote
greater public understanding of mental
illness, while governments need to
invest in better mental health and
outreach services.
The more we openly discuss the
issues in safe places and forums, the
more knowledgeable we will be and
better prepared to address the issue of
suicide, she said.

Mahendra Chaudhry Files 42 Nominations For Election

FIJI Labour Party leader Mahendra
Chaudhry filed his nomination to
contest the general election.
Despite a conviction ruling him out of
the September 17 General Election,
Chaudhry filed his nomination along
with that of 41 other FLP candidates.
After filing the nomination, he told
the media outside the Fijian Elections
Office in Suva that he had also filed his
nomination, saying "the fight is still on".
The FLP leader said the party had filed
42 candidates' nominations because
it was concentrating on certain areas
only.
When asked by the media why he had
filed his nomination when the court had
convicted him, Chaudhry said: "I'm
appealing the Fiji Court of Appeal's
decision last week in the Supreme
Court".
"I'll be seeking leave of the Supreme
Court to appeal against the Fiji Court
of Appeal's decision to dismiss my
appeal.
"I'll file it," he said.
"I'm going to pursue this matter right
to the end."
Chaudhry said filing his nomination
as a candidate was more of a technical
issue.
He said he would also fight against his
conviction on three counts of breaching
the Exchange Control Act.
While dismissing his appeal last
week, the Fiji Court of Appeal ruled
that $1million of the $2m fine that
Chaudhry had paid be returned to him.

for the Deaf.
This latest development was applauded
by the Ministry of Social Welfare,
Women and Poverty Alleviation
permanent secretary Dr Josefa
Koroivueta who pointed out that
the course recognises the important
work carried out by the institution in
Fiji. In officiating at the event, the
permanent secretary paid tribute to the
work carried out by them in raising
awareness for the hearing impaired.
It is 30 years now from the beginning
and it (Fiji Association for the Deaf)
is growing into maturity and today
marks just one of those seasons in its
plan where we now have qualified sign
language professionals who are ready
to take on this task, Dr Koroivueta
said.
He highlighted to guests at last nights

event that this development is in
line with the Ministrys objective to
empower not only disabled persons but
those Fijians who can assist in raising
awareness for the disabled.
Fiji is fortunate to be one of the pioneer
countries of this part of the world that
has launched the braille version of the
constitution which is a milestone for
the Bainimarama government, Dr
Koroivueta added.
Joeli Susu is one of the students who
graduated with an advanced certificate
in sign language and an award for
being the most involved student in the
deaf community.
I first started sign language in 2012
through motivation from a friend who
is a sign language translator. After
tonight, I feel a major accomplishment
in life today through this graduation,
Mr Susu said.

Chinese Hospital Ship To Provide

Medical Assistance In Fiji
The Chinese Naval Peace Ark

hospital ship is expected to visit to
Fiji later this week to provide relevant
medical services for Fijians.
The vessel is a first of its kind and is
construction was designed to be a
medical vessel and to provide services
to communities and countries.
Political Counsellor at the Embassy of
the Peoples Republic of China in Fiji
Yang Zhaohui highlighted that the visit
will consolidate and strengthen the
traditional friendship between people in
China and the South Pacific countries.
The ship will provide humanitarian
health services to the people and they
will serve 400 outpatients for each day
during the visit, Counsellor Zhaohui
said.
Serving as peace messenger, the Peace
Ark embodies Chinas New Security
Concept with peace, development and
co-operation.
Mr Zhaohui adds as it fourth session
of the Mission Harmony, the PLA
Navy Hospital Ship Peace Ark will
visit Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Papua
New Guinea. This is major military
exchange activity between China and
the South Pacific countries this year.
The ship has about 100 medical staff
in 22 specialties, among which there
are 15 clinical departments such
as respirations, internal medicine,
digestion
internal
medicine,
orthopaedics and general surgery.
The vessel also has 7 auxiliary
departments such as blood transfusion
department, radiology department and
pathology.
The naval vessel is expected to arrive
this Friday on the 22nd till the 29th of
this month and will open to members
of the public for visitation purposes.

has also confirmed filing an appeal for
the review of the rejection of Anare
Jale's nomination to contest the election.

ABOUT 1000 people with eye to farmers so they are able to protect

the optometrists of the Sai Medicare
Group providing free medical services
in the Northern Division.

300 patients with eye problems.

"We understand that farmers are being
introduced to debris and other related
substances when they are working and
that's why we are not only giving out
spectacles but also sunglasses," he said.
Mr Nadanachandran said people
continued to visit them to take
advantage of the free service.
"We are a self-funded organisation and
sometimes, people generously donate

Real Estate Increase

THE real estate market cannot be
regulated and the price of the properties
cannot be controlled because this is
determined by supply and demand, says
Real Estate Agents Licensing Board
CEO and registrar Ravinesh Murti.
He said many locals purchased

not official SODELPA statements and
call for more tolerance was not enough.
Intentionally or not, SODELPAs
policies on race and religion prepare
the ground for these expressions of
intolerance, he said.
Similar sentiments led to the 1987 and
2000 coups. Ro Teimumu needs to do
more than call for tolerance, he said.
To improve SODELPAs tarnished
image, she needs to strongly condemn
the intolerance, set an example with
her own statements and lead the call to
bring the perpetrators to justice

issued the import condition for fresh
ginger from Fiji, officially giving the
green light to the Australian ginger
importers to begin trade with Fiji.

Anare Jale Cries Foul Over

Elimination
Former top civil servant Anare Jale

is crying foul over his elimination
from the candidates list of the Social
Democratic Liberal Party.
Party stalwarts were still awaiting word
from the Electoral Commission for a
reply to their objection to his elimination.
According to Mr Jale, the ground of
lack of residency within Fiji over the
past two years prior to his nomination
was unfounded. I have been in Fiji all
this time, with only a few short trips to
the Solomon Islands and back again,
he said.
Mr. Jale has been working as a shortterm senior advisor to the Regional
Assistance Mission to the Solomon
Islands (RAMSI), but said he was
based out of Fiji. He is a former

permanent secretary for the Public
Service Commission (PSC).
I had sought legal advice on my
eligibility to run for the elections and
I was of the belief that I qualified since
I was always present and living in Fiji
and made brief trips abroad, he said.

increased by a whopping 559 per cent
when compared with 2012.
The Permanent Secretary for Industry
and Trade, Shaheen Ali, revealed this,
saying this increase followed a period
of decline.
Australian investment in Fiji in 2013
was $340 million, up by $288.4 million.
In 2012 it was $51.6 million.
It is therefore clear that Australian
investors are returning to Fiji to take
advantage of the investment boom
currently underway, he said.
Mr Ali was addressing 19 investors
from Australia who are currently in Fiji
exploring opportunities in a number
of sectors such as include tourism,
agriculture, manufacturing (garments),
education and many more.
The group is made up of those from
Australia as well as former Fijians.
He was speaking in Suva during the
Australian Investment and Trade
Exploratory Seminar organised by the
Consular General Sydney.
Reiterating the Prime Ministers
words, Mr Ali stressed smart investors
are not waiting until after the elections
in September to invest.
Smart investors who have confidence
in Fiji are putting their plans into
action now to enjoy to the maximum
benefits of an upward trend, he said.
No doubt these investors will be
rewarded in the long-term for your
foresight and decisiveness.

Mr Ali said Fiji is not just the perfect
investment destination in the Pacific
but is the ideal location for trade.
More and more businesses are
beginning to understand that Fiji is not
only a market of 800,000 people, but a
gateway to a market of more than 10
million across the Pacific, he said.
The bottom line is that Australia and
Fiji are natural trading partners and we
must work together to reach the full
potential of our relationship.
Untapped potential
Mr Ali revealed that a recent report
for Fijis National Trade Policy
Framework indicated there is a huge
amount of untapped potential for trade
in the Australian market.
Eighty per cent of exports to Australia
are currently made up of garments and
gold, he said.
If these commodities are removed,
exports to Australia would be equal to
Fijian exports to New Zealand, which
has an economy seven times smaller
than Australia.
Clearly, theres lots of room for
growth in our trading relationship.
Mr Ali encouraged the investors to
consider the potential of outsourcing
parts of their production processes to
Fiji.

advantages here that make sense to a
companys bottom line, he said.

$15Million Life Bonus
BSP Life policyholders have been

allocated $15million as bonuses for the
2013 financial year.
While announcing the 2013 bonus rate,
BSP Life managing director Malakai
Naiyaga said the reversionary bonus
rate was 2 per cent while the terminal
bonus rate was 0.25 per cent for each
year of the policy with a maximum of
2.5 per cent.
"The reversionary bonus is declared
to the policies each year, on the sum
insured and existing bonus. BSP Life
declares bonuses on a compounding
basis through the policy-term," he said.
For example, he said, if the sum insured
was $100,000 and existing bonuses
were $15,000, the 2 per cent bonus was
$2000 on the sum insured plus another
$300 on the existing bonuses, bringing
this to $2300.
"This ensures value is maximised for
the policyholder until such time the life
insurance policy matures," he said.

"The calculation of the reversionary
bonus takes into account the previous
earned bonuses so policyholders' value
accumulates over time to maximise
returns."
Mr Naiyaga said the terminal bonus
was an extra payout made at policy
maturity to provide policyholders who
claim in any year a share of investment
profits that may not have been already
distributed.
"In terms of total benefits to
policyholders, BSP Life paid out
$37m in benefit claims last year. These
benefits assist BSP Life policyholders
fulfill their life plans such as starting
businesses,
retirement
funding,
children's university fees or deposits
for a new home," he said.
He said BSP Life was a substantial
investor in the Fijian economy with a total
investment portfolio of more than $460m.

Candidate Nominations Close As Election Office

Fiji's elections office is checking the
eligibility of potential candidates
wanting to stand in next month's
election, the country's first since the
2006 coup.
Nominations have closed for Fiji's
elections on September 17, and the
elections office is now working on
determining who is or is not qualified
to stand.
Independent candidate Roshika Deo
was the first person to be officially
confirmed as a candidate.
"We were not aware that we were
going to be the first official confirmed
candidates," she said.
"We worked the hardest for the
requirements, we obtained everything
and went and did the submission and
were confirmed on the same day."
"It feels like all our hard work has paid
off, and there has been a team...which
has been working really hard to make
this possible."
Supervisor of Elections Mohammed
Saneem has told Pacific Beat there
are several electoral or constitutional
requirements which can keep a
candidate off the ballot.
"If a person is bankrupt, or if a person is
disqualified by the court, or if a person
is not a resident of Fiji - does not have
Fijian citizenship," he said.
"We are going to verify the nominations
to seek compliance with the electoral
decree and the constitution, following
which we will convey to the parties the
candidates which have been successful

and also the candidates which have not
been successful.
"It's a candidate nomination - not a
party nomination - so if a candidate in a
party is not successful, other candidates
may still go through."
One of those who expects to be rejected
is Fiji's opposition Labour Party leader
Mahendra Chaudhry, who is ineligible
to stand because of a recent conviction.
He says he's appealing that conviction,
even though it won't be heard until
after the poll, and could also launch a
constitutional challenge.
"I need to file my nomination and it
needs to be rejected, because if I don't
do that the court might tell me that 'I
didn't file and nothing was rejected, so
you can't come to us'," he said.
"I intend to pursue this particular
matter right to the end."
Ballot paper confusion
Fiji's Elections Office has also
defended the election process, which
has drawn criticism for the complexity
of its ballot paper.
Under the new constitution, all of Fiji
is treated as one electorate, meaning
all the candidates for the 50 seats in
parliament appear on the one paper.
The ballot paper consists of 280 squares
representing the candidates with threedigit numbers - to be randomly drawn
in a nationally televised ceremony.

Fiji And China Leaders Hold

Talks In Nanjing City
Strengthening relations between Fiji

and the Peoples Republic of China
topped talks held this week between
the two countries leaders in Nanjing
City, China.
The Fijian Head of State H.E Ratu
Epeli Nailatikau and the President of
the Peoples Republic of China H.E Xi
Jinping held bilateral talks this week
in China where both leaders agreed to
deepen relations.
The Fijian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
permanent secretary Amena Yauvoli
was present at the talks in Nanjing and
said the discussions between the two
Leaders focused on a number of wide
ranging issues.
He said that this included assistance
towards the improvement of Fijis
roading network, assistance in the
health sector and strengthening trade
and economic opportunities between

the two nations.
The meeting was a success given that
the two leaders focused on deepening
and strengthening bilateral and political
relations, Mr Yauvoli said.
80 million RMB which is equivalent to
FJD 25 million has been provided by
the Chinese Government as a token of
goodwill from the Peoples Republic of
China and her people. The Permanent
Secretary said the amount provided
by China is targeted towards Fijis
economic and sustainable development.
Talks also centered on Fiji sending
senior civil servants for political
training in China, Yauvoli said.
During talks, the Fijian President
extended an invitation to his Chinese

People living in the Northern division
who need dialysis treatment will now
no longer have to travel to Suva as a
new dialysis center was opened in
Labasa.
The President of Friendly North
Carnival, Vincent Sahayam said this
was made possible through donations
and the proceeds of last years Friendly
North Carnival.
Sahayam said $90,000 has been spent
on the center and their first patient from
Labasa received four hour dialysis
treatment.
The Vodafone Friendly North Carnival
starts this weekend with the theme
Our Environment Our Future.
Sahayam said they are working closely
with the Labasa and Savusavu Town
Councils and are planning to build a
recreational park with the proceeds of
this years carnival.

Suva man Mohammed Rafiq was
hailed a hero by his neighbours after he
ran through a burning home to save his
tenants children.
Neighbours told the reporter of the
rescue at Komari Squatter Settlement
in Nabua.
The devastating fire left five families
with nothing but the clothes on their
backs after the corrugated iron houses
were engulfed in flames.
House owner Mr Rafiq said his brother
was drinking kava around 2am when
he saw smoke coming out from one of
his tenants house.
He said he had four flats. He was living
in one of them, two flats were occupied
by his two tenants and one flat was
occupied by his brother. The house that
caught fire belonged to his neighbour.
The fire was spreading very quickly
and I saw my tenants coming out
without their children; I ran inside and
saw their elder son standing. He was
so shocked that he did not know what
to do, Mr Rafiq said. Then I quickly
ran inside to his younger brother, who
is just three years old, Mr Rafiq said.
As he carried the child out of the fullyengulfed house, Mr Rafiq said he

sustained some serious burns.
I did not care about myself. The only
thing I could think about was how I
could save the little boy, who is now
at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital
(CWMH), he said.
Mr Rafiq said it was also an emotional
day for his mother who was 73 years
old as she watched helplessly when
their house went up in flames.
Im worried about her health because
she has been crying a lot and this has
been a terrible experience for all of us,
he said.
He said even though everyone was
distressed that they did not have any
clothes or a place to stay they were
glad that they were all safe and that
was all that mattered.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health
media liaison officer Sunil Chandra said
the three-year-old boy was admitted
with his mother at the CWM Hospital.
They sustained injuries from the
incident and both of them are in a
stable condition, he said.

$65.9M Four Lane Road In Nadi

Expected To Begin Next Month
Work on the four lane road in Nadi

worth $65.9 million is expected to
begin next month.
This has been confirmed by the
new Fiji Roads Authority Chairman
Parmesh Chand who said the tender
that has been awarded to Higgins Fiji
Limited will see the Nadi N2 four lane
project from the Naisoso Junction to
the Wailoaloa Junction.
Chand said road users need to
familiarize themselves with this new
construction as it is expected to cause
traffic disruptions.

A man who was allegedly involved in

the $50,000 robbery from City Forex
Foreign Exchange has been remanded in
custody by the Nadi Magistrates court.
Senitieli Boila is charged with one
count of aggravated robbery.
Five masked men were involved in the
robbery last Friday morning and three

US $35M Investment In Biomass

Power Plant
Construction works have begun on a

10 Megawatts Biomass Power Plant in
Navutu, Nabou in Nadroga. This will
be fueled by short rotation crops.
The investment of around US$35
million has been possible through
a joint venture partnership between
Tropikwood Industries Limited and
Korean company GIMCO.
It is understood the US$35 million will
be sourced locally as well as through
overseas funding.
The project will take 28 months to be
completed and will be ready by end of
2016.
Fiji Pine Group of Companies executive
chairman, Faiz Khan, emphasised on
the need for partnerships with various
stakeholders in order to achieve success
in the project.
In particular, he spoke about
partnerships with the landowners,
Government, FEA and the various
shareholders in this joint venture.
Government has done its part by
creating a platform that is conducive
for such investment, he said.
Through its restructure in various
policies, it has strengthened its
relationship with its landowners who
are Fiji Pines major stakeholders.
There is a need to continue working
on the strengths of our partnerships for
a sustainable and profitable venture.
Reduce import reliance
Minister for Agriculture, Inia Seruiratu,
said the development of the biomass
facility will help reduce Fijis reliance
on imported fossil fuels.
He said the development will have

mutual benefits for the investor and the
people of Fiji.
This investment is timely since it will
contribute to our long term aspiration
for energy security and sustainable
development, he said.
Fiji is heavily dependent on
imported fossil fuels for producing
electricity as well as energy and
transportation.
Mr Seruiratu further said that apart
from creating jobs, the facility will
provide access to modern, affordable,
clean and reliable energy services.
GIMCO Bioenergy chairman, Sun Lee
Sang, thanked the Government and the
associated stakeholders who assisted in
the project.
Through this project, we want to assist
FEA and Fiji achieve the renewable
energy target for the country, he said.
FEA is aiming to provide clean and
affordable energy solution to Fiji
with at least 90 per cent of the energy
requirements
through
renewable
resources, he said.
The technology of renewable energy,
especially biomass power plant, is
already successful in Korea.
We believe this will not only strength
Fiji and Korea relations but can
also make Fiji a leader in biomass
energy generation in the Pacific and
developing countries.
He further mentioned the energy
crop plantation which is called short
rotation coppice will make Nabou
look greater and healthy again.

Fijian President Tours Commercial Sites In Hangzhou,

China
Fijian President His Excellency Ratu

Epeli Nailatikau this week visited
various commercial and cultural
sites in the city of Hangzhou in
China.
The Fijian Head of State is in China for
the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympics and
will also officiate at the opening of the
Fiji Consulate in Shanghai City. Whilst
there, he will hold talks with senior
government officials.
In Hangzhou City, the President
toured the latest Transfar High Tech
Agricultural Park. The park devotes
much of its scientific research and
development to the varieties of orchids
which are then used for domestic and
international sales.
The tour also featured a visit to Chinas

Silk Museum where the President and
his entourage were given a brief history
of silk production in China.
He also visited Hangzhous famous
Buddhist Lingyin Temple where he
was taken on a guided tour by Buddhist
monks. With Buddhism, the major
religion within the Asian region, His
Excellency said that the five million
people visiting the temple annually is
a testament of its religious and cultural
significance.
The President will join world leaders
and senior government officials this
weekend at the official opening of the
Nanjing Youth Olympics which will
also feature Fijian athletes

Office Opens In Shanghai
Another milestone achievement was

reached by the Fijian Government with
the opening of the newest Consulate
General Office in Shanghai.
The opening, which was officiated
by His Excellency the President Ratu
Epeli Nailatikau, symbolizes the
forging of closer ties between Fiji and
China who have both enjoyed almost
40 years of bilateral relations.
The opening of the Fiji Consulate in
Shanghai is an exciting development
which I firmly believe will serve as a
strong platform from which to launch
a reinvigorated Fiji-Sino economic

Epeli said.
Ratu Epeli informed invited guests and
Fiji residents present that the opening
of the office comes after successful
talks between the Fijian Government

Republic of China H.E Mr Xi Jinping.

on the importance of deepening our
bilateral relations now and into the
future, Ratu Epeli said.
During bilateral discussions held
with Chinas top government official
President Xi Jinping, Ratu Epeli also
reaffirmed the Fijian Governments

Policy, as a cornerstone of more
than 30 years of bilateral relations in
addition to Fijis Look North Policy.
The Look North Policy has been
the pillar of Fijis foreign policy that
recognizes the merits of our shared
principles of non-interference in each
others domestic affairs, respect for
each others sovereignty and territorial
integrity and the promotion of peace
and security.
He added that the shared principles
coupled with the opening of the Shanghai
Consulate General Office lays the
foundation for strengthened economic
relations between the two nations.

Fijian Woman 'Came Out Of

Nowhere', Says Hit And Run
Driver
Fijian woman Laisiane Lenat was

killed after being hit by a car on the
Hume Highway in Yagoona.
A SERIAL traffic offender who killed a
woman crossing the road on her way to
a prayer meeting claimed the 58-yearold came out of nowhere.
Laisiane Lenat was carried 10 metres
on the bonnet of the Honda Integra
Ahmad Saraya, 20, was driving before
she was thrown off and killed on the
Hume Highway at Yagoona last month.
The P-plater pleaded guilty to failing
to stop and render assistance in
Bankstown Local Court.
He smiled and joked when he was
granted bail a week after being charged
on July 4 for the fatal collision the
night before, but now faces up to 10
years jail.
After driving off following the fatal
crash Saraya turned himself in six hours
later accompanied by a lawyer. He
admitted hitting Ms Lenat but claimed
she came out of nowhere as she walked
across a pedestrian crossing.
I was doing around 50 to 60kmh. The
pedestrian was running across the road
in front of me, she came from nowhere.
I slammed on my brakes, he told police.
I was in shock, there were people
around and I took off and went home.
He then refused to answer any more
questions about the crash.
Ms Lenats housemate and colleague
at Yagoona Nursing Home Michelle
Tonji said there was no way Ms Lenat
would have been running across the
busy highway at 7pm.
She would never run across the road.
She never rushed anything. She always

takes her time, even walking, she said.
I am happy that he pleaded guilty but
the fact he said she run in front of the
car, she would never do that. He hit and
run, how can someone do that? I want a
strong sentence.
Ms Tonji said Ms Lenat was
remembered as a caring devoutly
religious Christian at her funeral.
She was a beautiful person with a
beautiful soul and big heart, she said.
When Ms Lenat was thrown from the
car nine metres past the intersection
she died on impact.
Saraya then drove 160m along the
highway before making a sharp left
turn into a side street and fleeing to his
fathers Guildford home.
The accused made no attempt to stop,
render assistance or call for any type of
assistance, police said.
Police initially thought Saraya may
have been street racing and were
looking for a second car, a two-door
blue/black sedan, but investigations
did not support this theory.
Court documents revealed Saraya didnt
even hold a NSW drivers licence.
Police said Saraya had a continuous
offence history relating to traffic
matters since he got his P-plates in
2011.
In his first year of driving he had his
licence suspended three times for
speeding, including in a school zone.
Despite driving for more than three
years he has never held a full licence.
He also had provisional ACT licence.
Saraya will be sentenced in October.

Agreement say daily fishing access
fees in the Pacific have hit an all-time
high of US$13,000.
The PNA has a minimum limit this year
of $6000 for a fishing day, but earlier
this month Papua New Guinea agreed
to pay $13,000 in a trade with Kiribati.
Migratory tuna
The record-setting price reflects the
easterly movement of migratory tuna
as the weather phenomenon known
as El Nio begins to build in the
western Pacific. The changing ocean
temperature during El Nio conditions
pushes fish from the normally lucrative

fishing grounds of PNG and Solomon
Islands east to Kiribati and the Marshall
Islands.
These countries are members of
the eight-nation PNA group which
controls waters where over 50 percent
of the global supply of skipjack tuna is
caught.
The PNA manages the purse seine
fishery through a vessel day scheme

6 skinless, boneless chicken breast

1 (16 ounce) bottle Italian-style salad
dressing
Directions
To Marinate: Pour salad dressing into
a large, resealable plastic bag. Add
chicken breasts, seal bag and shake to
coat. Place in refrigerator for at least
1 hour or overnight (the longer you
marinate, the more taste the chicken

Marinade:
1 tsp (5 mL) dried thyme
1 tsp (5 mL) dried rosemary
1/4 cup (50 mL) olive oil
2 tbsp (25 mL) chopped oil-packed
sun-dried tomatoes
1 tbsp (15 mL) Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp (2 mL) chilli flakes
Salt to taste
Salmon:
4 6-oz (175-g) salmon fillets, skin-on
2 oz (50 g) snow pea pods, cut in half
on the diagonal
4 green onions, cut in 2-inch (5-cm)
pieces
6 cherry tomatoes, halved and seeded
Directions Combine thyme, rosemary,
olive oil, sun-dried tomatoes, mustard
and chilli flakes in a minichop (or by
hand) and process until combined.
Mixture should have a chunky texture.
Spread marinade over salmon and
season with salt.
Preheat oven to 450 F (230 C).
Place tomatoes in an oiled ovenproof baking dish large enough to
hold the salmon fillets. Bake for 10

minutes. Remove dish from oven and
toss tomatoes with snow pea pods
and green onions. Place salmon on
top.
Bake, uncovered, for 12 minutes or
until white juices appear and salmon is
just cooked through.
Serve salmon fillets with some
vegetables and any juices.

Police arrested a man from Tilak Nagar

her into having physical relations with
his friends.
The suspect has been charged under the
sections 377 (unnatural offences), 498
(A) (husband or relative of husband
of a woman subjecting her to cruelty),
323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324
(voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous
weapons or means) and 506 (criminal
intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
An officer at Swaroop Nagar police
station, who is the investigating officer
of the case, said that the incident came
to light last month when the victim
shared her plight with her parents
following which they approached
police and lodged a complaint.

"They said that the man, a well known
businessman of Tilak Nagar area, used
to beat up his wife and force her into
having unnatural sex. Besides, he also
asked her to have physical relations
with his friends. When the victim
resisted her husband's demands, he
tortured her. He also threatened to kill
her and her parents if she disclosed
anything to anyone."
However, the victim tried to tell her inlaws about the harassment but they too
asked her to adhere to her husband's
demands. "Frightened, the victim
decided to inform her parents," police
officer said further. "Victim's husband
has been arrested and sent to jail," he
said.
U.S. officials say the discovery of nine

immigrants who were locked inside the
cargo area of a rental truck at a Border
Patrol checkpoint in southern Arizona
highlights the dangers of human
smuggling.
Customs and Border Protection says
the incident Thursday at a checkpoint
near Amado was a potentially deadly
smuggling attempt because of summer
heat and because there was no source
or fresh air or means of escape.
"Transporting people inside the cargo area
of a vehicle is extremely dangerous due to
heat, the possibility of a vehicle accident,
or other unforeseen circumstances," the
agency said in a statement.
The discovery came two days after
agents in San Diego found two
immigrants being smuggled in the
trunk of a car through a border
crossing. The two Mexican men,
ages 28 and 20, were not breathing
and were pronounced dead at a local
hospital. Their suspected smuggler told
authorities he had been paid $3,500 to
bring the men to the U.S.
In Arizona, the seven men, one woman
and a teenage boy had been loaded into
the U-Haul in Nogales, which is about
a 20-minute drive from the checkpoint
where they were discovered. Agents
did not check the temperature inside
the truck, but they said it was about 90
degrees that day.
Agents became suspicious of the driver
and the passenger, who claimed to not
have a key for the padlock on the cargo
area's door. Agents used a truck with an
X-ray machine to spot the immigrants,
A 57-year-old man is dead after he

went into a crocodile-infested river in
the Northern Territory to unsnag his
fishing line and was attacked by one of
the reptiles as his wife looked on.
The attack occurred at the Adelaide
River, about 60 kilometres from
Darwin, on Monday afternoon.
Police say the man's wife witnessed the
attack and ran for help.
"He was there with his wife and he was
fishing on the water's edge," NT Police
Superintendent Jo Foley said.
"She left the scene because she saw
this happen."
Police and wildlife officers searched
the river using multiple boats and
located the crocodile a few hours later.

Shots were fired at the crocodile.
The man's body was recovered late on
Monday night.
Adelaide River is a well known
crocodile hot-spot that draws tourists
who go on cruises to watch the huge
reptiles.
There are signs in the area warning that
crocodiles are present and dangerous.
Operations manager at St John
Ambulance, Craig Garraway, said staff
were called and treated the man's wife
for shock but she wanted to remain at
the scene.
A report is being prepared for the
coroner.

Authorities have deported a northern

Utah woman to El Salvador where
she is wanted in connection with her
American husband's death in 2013.
Federal immigration agents said the
28-year-old Nuri Liseth Aquino-Torres
Brown was deported to El Salvador on
Wednesday and handed over to authorities
in the Central American country.
She is accused of orchestrating the
murder of her then estranged husband,
the 53-year-old James Brown, who

was from Michigan. A fugitive arrest
warrant was issued in January by a
court in Sonsonate, El Salvador.
She cannot be reached for comment
and it is unclear if she has an attorney
in El Salvador.

at her Ogden home in March. An
immigration judge in July ordered that
she be removed from the U.S.
The woman, who was arrested for

allegedly killing her granddaughter,
tried to commit suicide in the police
lock-up a day later.
A constable posted at the lock-up

(55), immediately and she was taken
to an Ulhasnagar hospital. Doctors said
her condition was stable. Cops may
book her for the suicide bid.
Borse had reportedly confessed to
killing the two-and-half-year-old
physically challenged girl, Ketki
Hire, by throwing her into a nullah on
August 15. "The accused was upset
after committing the crime and told
policemen that she wanted to end her

The incident was a reminder of the
dangers immigrants face when being
smuggled into the country.
Last summer, an immigrant died in
the back of a rental truck and eight
others suffered from heat exhaustion
while being smuggled north of Tucson.
Authorities arrested five people
suspected of smuggling the immigrants
from Douglas, Arizona. The group was
headed to Phoenix.
Many others have died in car accidents
while being smuggled.
An SUV carrying 11 immigrants hit
a wall and rolled while the driver
tried fleeing border agents who were
trying to stop them near Casa Grande,
Arizona, in May 2012. Four were
killed and seven injured in the crash.
The Dodge Durango had been one of
two cars traveling through a popular
smuggling corridor when agents tried
to stop them.
A very similar incident took place
in Texas in October 2012, when four
immigrants died and seven were hurt
after a van carrying them tried to
evade a Border Patrol vehicle and
wrecked near a sugarcane field south
of Donna, Texas. Border agents saw
the van loaded up near the Rio Grande,
authorities said. The driver also spotted
the agents and fled before they could
even try to stop the van.
In an especially brutal case in 2003, 18
of about 100 people being smuggled
in a truck trailer in south Texas died of
heat-related injuries. That included a
7-year-old boy.

Ohio Morgue Worker Kenneth Douglas Had Sex With

Up To 100 Corpses
A MORGUE attendant has admitted he

may have had sex with as many as 100
female corpses.
Kenneth Douglas, from the city of
Hamilton, Ohio, was arrested, charged
and sentenced to three years in prison
in 2008 after DNA from his semen was
found inside the body of murder victim,
19-year-old Karen Range. The crime
only came to light after Ranges murderer
David Steffen appealed his conviction
for murder and rape. He admitted killing
Range but denied raping her.
Douglas pleaded guilty in 2012 to having
sex with 23-year-old Charlene Appling
on the day she died after being strangled
while six months pregnant and having
sex with another woman April Hicks.
Douglas was sentenced for a further
three years on each of the offences.
Now he has admitted to having sex
with up to 100 dead women between
1976 and 1992 while he worked the
night shift.

The extent of his crimes came to light

A patient who may have been exposed

to the Ebola virus has been put in
isolation at a hospital in Sacramento,
California.
"We are working with the Sacramento
County Division of Public Health
regarding a patient admitted to the Kaiser
Permanente South Sacramento Medical
Center who may have been exposed
to the Ebola virus," Stephen Parodi, an
infectious disease specialist with health
group Kaiser Permanente, said.
The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) will be testing blood
samples to rule out the presence of the
virus, he said.
"To protect our patients, staff and
physicians, even though infection with
the virus is unconfirmed, we are taking
the actions recommended by the CDC
as a precaution, just as we do for other

patients with a suspected infectious
disease," Parodi said.
"This includes isolation of the patient in
a specially equipped negative pressure
room and the use of personal protective
equipment by trained staff, coordinated
with infectious disease specialists.
This enables the medical center to
provide care in a setting that safeguards
other patients and medical teams."
Two US patients infected with the
virus, a health care worker and a
doctor, returned to the United States
from Africa for treatment in late July.
Currently there is no approved antiviral
treatment or vaccine, only experimental
phase treatments. The global death toll
from Ebola stands at 1229, with the bulk of
cases in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

A 27-year-old woman was allegedly

The survivor said in her complaint that

do. However, when the two men again

raised an alarm and called her husband,
who informed the police.
In a statement, the hotel termed the
incident as very unfortunate. "The

individuals in question are not hotel
employees. We are fully cooperating
with the police and local authorities
with the investigation." A senior police
officer said Neeraj had been attending
on the ailing woman for eight years
and Rajan for the past six months.
The police got a call from the woman's
husband around 1am on Monday
morning. A PCR team got to the
spot and recorded her statement. Her
medical examination was conducted
after which an FIR was registered
verbatim of her statement.
According to the FIR, the woman had
earlier worked for a private hospital.
She was employed to take care of the
ailing woman, a heart patient, at the
hotel around two months ago.
The accused were produced before a
magistrate on Monday after which they
were sent to judicial custody for 14
days. The survivor is being provided
with counselling.
The police would file a charge-sheet
in the case within 30 days, an officer
said. They would also ask the hotel
to submit CCTV footages to establish
the woman's claims. The statement of
the hotel administration will also be
recorded, police said.

Foley had been held captive before.
Foley, a correspondent for Boston
news site GlobalPost, spent 44 days
in captivity in Libya in 2011 after
attempting to report on the uprising
against Moamar Gaddafi.
After being released, Foley told the
GlobalPost that he and two colleagues
saw unarmed South African photographer
Anton Hammerl, who was travelling with
them, shot dead as they were captured by
soldiers allied to Gaddafi.
"I still want to be a conflicts journalist,
but I realise this is life and death,"
Foley said then.
"What's been tough to realise is Anton
passed away, and it could have been
any one of us."
He said he believed Hammerl's death
was a war crime against an unarmed
journalist.

the front lines with rebels to cover the
uprising against Gaddafi.

On the return journey the journalists,
who were travelling as part of a convoy,

Brega to interview another group of

left and two heavily-armed vehicles
carrying Libyan soldiers approached,
firing machine guns.
Hammerl was shot and his body was
left behind. The three other journalists
were beaten before being driven to a
house in Brega.
Foley said he was interrogated about
whether he was a spy and was repeatedly
brought into court to face charges of
entering the country without a visa and
reporting without permission.
In contrast to his early days in captivity,
Foley spent his last days in custody in
a villa, eating well and watching cable
television before being driven to the
Tunisian border and released.
He was captured again in Syria in
November 2012 and held before his
beheading by an Islamic State militant.

Secrets For Communicating With Teenagers
Does this sound familiar? Your teenage

son is taking forever in the bathroom
(again), but you need him to get ready
so you can get to work on time. Youre
thinking, How could I have raised
such an inconsiderate kid? Hes so
disrespectful! Meanwhile, your child
is locked in the bathroom, consumed
with his image in the mirror. Hes
thinking, No way am I going to school
with this pimple on my nose. Outside
in the hallway, you start pounding
on the door, yelling at him to hurry
up. He screams, God, you just dont
understand! Leave me alone! When
he finally emerges, he gives you the
silent treatment. Not only that, hes
missed the bus, so you have to drive
him to school. You end up late for
work and completely overwhelmed,
wondering, Why doesnt my kid
listen to me? Does he have to fight me
on everything?
You and your teen: two different
worlds, two different perspectives
and a giant disconnect that can make
communicating a real mystery. As
a therapist and the mother of three
teenagers myself, I know firsthand
that the more you push your kids, the
more they get defensive and dig in
their heels; they become reactive in
the form of explosiveness or shutting
down. And theyre thinking, My
parents dont have a clue, so whats
the point of trying to explain myself?
Ill just tune them out. Clamming
up or exploding are both ways your
teenagers attempt to manage their
stress and defend themselves. Thats
because distance and explosiveness are
often the only ways your teen knows
how to communicate when things get
intensewhich of course only causes
more conflict.
Here are 5 secrets that Ive found
to be really helpful personally for
communicating with kids through the
difficult adolescent years.
1. The secret to opening your childs
ears: Heres a simple secret that will
help you in everything you do with your
teen: No matter how hard it might be, try
to start all interactions with your child
with understanding, even if you dont
fully agree or even quite comprehend
what they're talking about. Heres an
example: Your teenage daughter is not
doing her schoolwork, and instead is
online with friends chatting. It drives
you crazy because youre thinking,
If she fails another test, her average
will go down and shell never get into
college. What kind of future will she
have? Your teen, on the other hand
is thinking, I have to get online and
talk with Skyler. If we dont make
up after the fight we had in the hall
today, all the other girls will be against
me and Ill have no one to hang out
with at school tomorrow. Again, two
different worlds. Try to start by saying,
I understand how difficult it is for you

when you have a fight with one of your
friends. I also know that you need to
pass this test tomorrow. Schoolwork is
your job and it's your responsibility to
do it to the best of your abilities. Lets
sit down and think of a good way you
can manage your time tonight. Be
sure not to say "I understand, but..."
which will simply disqualify what
you've just said. Start from a place of
understanding, and try to put yourself
in your childs shoes first before telling
her what needs to change. Ive found
that doing this tends to open kids
ears. Instead of feeling like they have
to defend themselves against you, they
actually listen.
2. Take the emotionality out of the
equation. Emotion is your enemy when
youre trying to get through to your
teen. Remind yourself that what he says
and does is not a reflection on you. You
may not like how hes behavingor
even how hes thinkingbut keep your
emotions out of it, even if his behavior
impacts you. Im not saying this is an
easy thing to do; its tough, but its a
skill you can learn just like any other.
In fact, I tell parents to repeat this
slogan to themselves before talking to
their kids: This is just like a business
transaction; its nothing personal.
When you really think about it, theres
no reason to be mad at your child for
being himself. He may be making a
poor choice, but the truth is, he might
not yet have the skill set to make a
better one. So your job is to help guide
him to better choices so he can in turn
develop a better skill set. When you
realize what your job is as a parent, it
will help you be less emotional. When
you feel frustrated, remember, dont
take it personally. Tell yourself that this
is simply a problem to solve, and part
of parenting business as usual.
3. Ask curious questionsnot loaded
questions. Ask your teen for his ideas
and be collaborative. Let him see that
you believe in him and that youre not
mad at him for struggling in his life.
When you let him see that you have
faith in his abilities and he has the space
to work things out on his own, you will
begin to develop true confidence in
him. Dont ask loaded questions that
put your child on the defensive like,
Why cant you get up on time? Whats
wrong with you? Instead, try opening
a conversation with, Eli, do you have
any ideas for how you might get up
on time? If he says he doesnt know,
offer a few of your own and ask which
one would work for him. Let your teen
know that his problems are his to solve.
Dont step into his box. Rather,
you are there to help him figure out
solutionsand to let him deal with the
natural consequences of his behavior.
Your goal is to help your child think
for himself, which will in turn help
him feel like he has some control over

his world. Listen openly to what he
says and ask him to think critically
about each choice. What will work and
what will be problematic about each
decision? What would be the natural
consequences of each choiceand
how would he feel about dealing with
that?
4. Dont be needy; stand on your
own two feet. Dont need your
teens cooperation, validation, or
good behavior. As soon as you need
something from your child so that you
can feel better, you have put yourself in
a vulnerable position because he does
not have to give it to you. When you
need something and dont get it, you
will naturally try harder by controlling
and manipulating more. And your teen
will become more and more defiant or
passively compliantneither of which
is good.
The truth is, you dont need anyone
else to prop you up. You can validate
yourself and solve your own problems.
So if your child is acting out, thats his
problem. Your problem is to decide
how you will choose to behave toward
him. Thats in your hands, not his. Ask
yourself, How do I want to act, no
matter how he is acting? What can I put
up with and what cant I? Take back
your power and say to yourself, If my
child is screaming at me, instead of
needing him to stop, I can turn around
and walk away and not engage. Let
him know you wont talk with him
until he can approach you with civility.
Heres the truth: when you arent trying
to get your child to change or shape
up, you will be able to think of better

choices for yourself. And your child

will be less defiant because he will
have no one to resist. When youre not
trying to control him and youre not
reacting to him, he will have to wrestle
with himself rather than with you.
5. Dont do anything until you're both
calm. Another rule of thumb is to avoid
doing anything until you and your
child have both calmed down. The fact
is, you dont have to respond to your
child when you are upset, or when your
child is upset and in your face. You
just dont. You can say nothing. You
can take a few minutes or more if you
need to. When emotions have evened
out, you can sit down and talk with
him. Its never good to try to bring up a
difficult subject or resolve a conflict in
the heat of the moment. So if either you
or your child is upset, pause and come
back when you can address things in a
calmer way.
If you attempt a conversation with your
child and hes rude or out of line, thats
when you have to hold on to yourself
and make sure you dont get dragged
into a fight. If your relationship with
your child is such that its impossible to
have an open, respectful conversation
at this point in time, remember
that its still your job to stay firmly
planted. Have a slogan that you say
to yourself like, Im not going there
no matter what. If you can do that
consistently, over time the baiting and
antagonism should calm down. And
dont feel badly if you get pulled back
in occasionallystaying strong isnt
easy. The good news is that the more
you refuse to engage, the easier it will
get to stay calm.

pointed out that accessing the vein
is not always easy in certain cases.
Newborn babies and children have
very thin and superficial veins; older
or geriatric patients often have with
tremors, some combative patients are

the back of the hand.
When the butterfly needle is inserted
into the vein, a 'flash' can be seen.

The 'flash' is a small amount of blood
that flows into the hub connected to

healthy pregnancy".
The saturated fat in yolks is also
necessary for hormone production and
the body's absorption of vitamins and
minerals.
If you control your overall calories,
whole egg consumption won't cause
weight gain, despite its fat content.
There is a strong link between severe,

untreated obstructive sleep apnea and
the risk of elevated blood pressure
despite the use of high blood pressure
medications, an alarming study
indicates.
The study involved patients who
had cardiovascular risk factors or
established heart disease and moderate
or severe obstructive sleep apnea.
Among participants prescribed at
least three antihypertensives including
a diuretic, resistant elevated blood
pressure was more prevalent in those
with severe sleep apnea (58.3 percent)
compared with moderate sleep apnea
(28.6 percent).
Further analysis found that the odds of
resistant elevated blood pressure were
four times higher in participants with
severe, untreated obstructive sleep
apnea.
"Our findings suggest that severe
obstructive sleep apnea contributes to

poor blood pressure control despite
aggressive medication use," said first
author Harneet Walia, an assistant
professor from Cleveland Clinic Lerner
College of Medicine at Case Western
Reserve University.
"High blood pressure that is resistant
to treatment with medications is a
strong warning sign for the presence
of obstructive sleep apnea - a chronic
disease that increases the risk for heart
disease and stroke," added Timothy
Morgenthaler, president of American
Academy of Sleep Medicine.
Over one-third of patients with
hypertension and nearly eight out of
10 patients with treatment resistant
hypertension have obstructive sleep

Do you always toss out the yolks when

you make an omelette? If studies are to
be believed, avoiding egg yolks could
mean you are missing out on good
nutrition.
Whole eggs don't raise your risk of
heart disease - in fact, according to
nutrition coach Liz Wolfe, it may be
worse for your health to not eat them.
Egg yolks, along with other sources
of saturated fat and cholesterol, came
under fire in the wake of research by
Nikolai Anichkov at the turn of the
20th century.
Anichkov tested on rabbits and found
that cholesterol promotes heart disease.
Wolfe counters: "Rabbits have nothing
in common with human bodies ...
and cholesterol isn't part of their diet
anyway."
Researcher Ancel Keys made headlines
in the 1950s with his Seven Countries'
Study, which almost single-handedly
set the line of thinking on saturated fat
that prevails today.
Keys claimed that after looking at the
average diets of populations in seven
different countries, he was able to
determine that those who ate the most
animal fat had the highest rates of heart
disease. But his analysis was flawed.
Although Keys' data did show a
connection between fat and heart
disease, he couldn't demonstrate that
the relationship was causal.

Hormonal therapy
Some form of hormonal therapy is
usually continued even if the cancer is
growing despite the hormonal therapy.
If all hormonal therapy is stopped, the
cancer is likely to grow very rapidly.
If a man is only taking an LHRH
agonist, an anti-androgen (usually
bicalutamide) will be added when
there are signs of castrate-resistant
growth (usually a rising PSA when

Chemotherapy has an important role
in the treatment of castrate-resistant
prostate cancer.
The most common chemotherapy
drugs used to treat prostate cancer are:
-docetaxel (Taxotere)
-mitoxantrone (Novantrone)
-cabazitaxel (Jevtana)
The most common chemotherapy
combinations used are:
-docetaxel and prednisone This
combination reduces pain, improves
quality of life and increases survival.

Bisphosphonates are drugs that
strengthen bone. A bisphosphonate
is used in combination with other
standard treatments for castrateresistant prostate cancer.
The type of bisphosphonate used with
castrate-resistant prostate cancer is
zoledronic acid (Zometa). It decreases
bone-related complications in men
with prostate cancer.
Biological therapy
A RANK ligand inhibitor is biological
therapy in which a monoclonal
antibody blocks the action of RANK
ligand (a protein that promotes bone
resorption). This helps to strengthen
bone. The RANK ligand inhibitor
denosumab is better than zoledronic
acid by increasing the time to bonerelated events in metastatic castrate-
resistant prostate cancer. It has recently

been approved for use in men with
prostate cancer in Canada.
Surgery
Transurethral resection of the prostate
(TURP) may be offered for hormonerefractory prostate cancer. This type
of surgery is used to relieve urinary
symptoms caused by the prostate
tumour (palliative surgery).
Clinical trials
Men with prostate cancer may be
offered the opportunity to participate
in clinical trials. For more information,

Active surveillance for prostate cancer
Active surveillance may be a treatment
option for some men with prostate
cancer that has a very low risk of
progressing. Active surveillance means
the healthcare team watches the cancer
closely. Treatment is given if there are
any signs of the tumour growing or
showing signs of an increased risk of
progression.
Many men diagnosed with prostate
cancer will not need to have treatment
as soon as they have been diagnosed.
Most prostate cancers are slowgrowing tumours, and many remain
confined to the prostate gland. Older
men diagnosed with this type of
prostate tumour are more likely to die
from other coexisting diseases rather
than from prostate cancer. They are
often unlikely to notice any signs or
symptoms of their cancer for many
years. Active surveillance is usually
the treatment of choice in older men
and those with significant medical
problems (especially if life expectancy
less than 10 years). However, it is also
suitable for many healthy, younger
men.
Active surveillance is not known to
have negative effects or to reduce longterm survival.
Active surveillance may be a treatment
option for men with prostate cancer
who:
-have low-grade (Gleason score 6)
or sometimes intermediate-grade
(Gleason score 7) prostate cancer that
is confined to the prostate (early stage)
and is considered low (favourable) risk
-prefer not to have immediate treatment
for prostate cancer, to avoid side effects
and preserve their quality of life
During active surveillance, regular
tests will be done about every 3 to 6
months to monitor the prostate cancer.
This can vary depending on the
individual situation. Tests may include:
-prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test
-physical examination, including a
digital rectal examination (DRE)
-prostate biopsy
-bone scan, chest x-ray or CT scan,
depending on signs and symptoms
-MRI of the prostate (in some cases)

Treatment such as surgery or radiation
therapy is started if:
-the PSA level consistently rises over
time
-the Gleason score increases on followup biopsies
-there are symptoms and tests that
show the cancer is progressing
Some men may find it too stressful to
have their prostate cancer watched or
monitored without active treatment.
For these men, immediate therapy may
be the preferred option.
Advantages of active surveillance
-avoids unnecessary treatment and side
effects
-quality of life unchanged
Disadvantages of active surveillance
-risk of spread and missed chance of a
cure
-frequent follow-up visits and tests
It is very important for a man with
prostate cancer to be well informed
about the details of his diagnosis
and treatment options as well as the
potential side effects. This allows him
to choose the treatment option that is
best for him.
Surgery for prostate cancer
Surgery is a common treatment for
prostate cancer. Surgery is used to:
-potentially cure the cancer by
completely removing the tumour
-reduce pain or ease symptoms
(palliative treatment)
The type of surgery done depends
mainly on the stage of the cancer and
other factors, such as the mans age,
general health and life expectancy.
Side effects of surgery depend on the
type of surgical procedure.
Radical prostatectomy
Radical prostatectomy is the most
common surgery to treat localized
prostate cancer.
(TURP) is usually done as palliative
treatment to relieve urinary obstruction.
Pelvic lymph node dissection
Lymph fluid from the prostate drains
into the pelvic lymph nodes.
Usually, prostate cancer that has spread
to the pelvic lymph nodes is considered
incurable. Sometimes prostate cancer
with only microscopic spread to the
lymph nodes can be cured with surgery.
Pelvic lymph node dissection is
performed during radical prostatectomy
to find out if the cancer has spread to
the pelvic lymph nodes. It does not
need to be done in men with low-risk
cancer.
In this procedure, the major groups of
lymph nodes in the pelvis are removed.

Abhishek Bachchan To Make A

Film On Kabaddi
Actor Abhishek Bachchan, who owns
Jaipur Pink Panthers, a franchise of the
Pro Kabaddi League, may do a fullfledged movie on the sport.
It may be too early to talk about the
movie, but sources close to the project
say it would be as inspirational a film
about the game of kabaddi as Chak De!
India was for hockey.
Abhishek wants to make sure its
the perfect kabaddi film. Hes on the
lookout for the script, said a source.
For now, making kabaddi into a cool
game is Abhisheks game-plan. Though
he is committed to join his good friend
Shah Rukh Khan on their global tour
to promote their film Happy New
Year September onwards, Abhishek is
making the best of the time before the
concert tours to promote his kabaddi
team at matches all over India.

3 is set for Friday release in India and
the Hollywood action star wishes luck
to Indian Rambo Ajay Devgan and his
new film Singham Returns.
The two films were supposed to hit the
screens Aug 15, but the face off was
avoided.
I think we are releasing against the
Indian Rambo in India. Best of luck

to Singham and Ajay Devgan, the
Rambo star said in a statement.
The Expendables 3 will release in
Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, other than
English, in India Aug 22.
Singham Returns, on the other hand,
has already minted Rs.53.14 crore in
the first two days of its release.

Pankaj Kapoor's Special Connect

Veteran actor Pankaj Kapoor, who

plays the role of a belligerent painter
in 'Finding Fanny', says he joined the
project because it gave him a chance to
work with director Homi Adajania and
a talented starcast. "I got a very good
vibe from Homi. I felt very comfortable
in his presence. I felt he was chilled out
and a nice guy who came up with an
interesting script. He gave me a lot of
confidence as a person. The kind of
role I play in the film is very unique
and something that I have never done
before," Pankaj said.
The film, starring Deepika Padukone,
Arjun Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah,
Dimple Kapadia and Pankaj, is slated
to hit the screens on August 25. Both
Naseer and Dimple have worked with
Adajania earlier in the director's debut
project 'Being Cyrus', also in English.
Pankaj, 60, is all praises for the young
cast of the film, saying he was quite

impressed with their dedication and
discipline to the craft. "It's a great
pleasure to work with fine actors and
Naseer is one of the finest actors that
we have. It is always great working
with him but in this given case, the
three other actors were quite a joy too.
They had a down-to-earth approach,
great professionalism and discipline
towards their craft."
The film is in English but Pankaj does
not think that would pose a problem
for the movie to relate to the audience.
"The producers have their vision about
how they want to market the film.
There are a whole lot of people who
speak the language comfortably. When
they see Indian characters speaking
English, I don't think they will find it
troublesome. Some films have already
been made in the language," he said.

The 11 year old girl is very excited

about her film.
Ajay Devgan and Kajol have two of
the most wonderful kids in B-Town.
Their little angel Nysa has already
started showing the signs of being
from a Devgan family. Grapevine has
it that the 11 year old girl is working
on making a short film. Ajay Devgan
is all set to start work on his second
directorial and it seems her daughter
maybe of some help to papa as well.
Speaking to a leading daily a source
says, Nysa has keen interest in films.

She is making a short film which is a
part of her school assignment and has
nothing to do with the real world of
films. She is quite excited about it as she
will be working with her close friends.
Like all proud parents, Ajay and Kajol
are also very thrilled about it.
Now we know that films are in her
blood, but we never thought she would
be starting this early. Seems like
another star kid is already prepping up
for a grand entry to Bollywood.

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol have

source said, Rohit will be directing
SRK in his next film and he has now

signed on Kajol as the lead actress
for the film. This is indeed a coup
though everything is at the planning
stage right now. In fact, the films preproduction work has already begun
and an official announcement should
be made soon.
If Rohit, who is currently riding
high on the success of his latest film
Singham Returns, has actually singed
SRK-Kajol for his next then we are
pretty sure the film would be nothing
less than dhamakedaar. After all, its
coming together of two supremely
talented actors and one super successful

Rani Mukerjis Mardaani Gets An

A Certificate
Ranis cop drama is the first YRF film

to get an A certificate
After watching YRFs Mardaani starring
Rani Mukerji, the CBFC gave the film
an A certificate. However, Aditya Chopra
had a chat and tried to explain that the
subject was such that the film should
be seen by children of the age of 12 and
above. However the authorities denied the
request as the present guidelines do not
have a category for 12 years and above.
It is the first YRF film to get an A
certificate. A spokesperson of YRF said,
Mardaani is a story that needed to be
told and our aim is to reach this message
to all, including those innocent girls in
the vulnerable age of 12 and above. We
strongly felt that they should be allowed
to watch this movie and hence we
were requesting for a U/A certificate,
since the Censor Board does not have
a category of 12 and above. We also
told the Board that we would put Not
Recommended for Children below 12
in all our publicity material and at the
start of the film, to ensure that parents
are sufficiently informed that children
under 12 should not watch this film.
However, the Censor Board explained

to us that this was not legally possible
so we accepted their decision of giving
the film an A certificate.
We must reiterate that this request for
a U/A certificate was not for just one
scene or dialogue which can be deleted
or modified as required, and was in fact
done according to the stipulation of the
board. The request was only to help
reach the message to those young girls
who, in our opinion, are at an age where
they need to be aware and be informed
about this serious issue (but were going
to be precluded from seeing it because
of the A certificate).
In fact we had a screening for few
women who strongly felt that they
would want their daughters above 12 to
watch the film and we hope that when
the audience sees the film on 22nd of
August, they too will agree with this
viewpoint and realise the sensitivity
with which this difficult issue has been
handled in the film.
Mardaani is a gritty film on human
trafficking in which Rani plays the role
of a cop. It will hit screens on August 22.

Aftab Replaces Riteish In Kya

Super Kool Hai Hum Sequel
Aftab will soon be seen in the upcoming sequel of the sex comedy
Aftab Shivdasani is riding high on

the success of his last film Grand
Masti alongside Riteish Deshmukh
and Vivek Oberoi. He recently got
married and has been getting a lot of
movie offers ever since. Grapevine
has it that he has now replaced Riteish
Deshmukh in the famous movie
franchise Kya Kool Hai Hum, which
came up with the sequel Kya Super
Kool Hai Hum last year.
The third installment is all set to go on
floors by the end of this year but it seems
Riteish wont be able to allot dates for

the project as he is busy with Farhan

Ottawa Urged To Remove Citizenship By Birth On Canadian Soil

Officials recommend Ottawa removing citizenship rights to babies born to non-citizens and non-residents even though costs outweigh benefits.
Immigration

have
recommended that Ottawa remove
citizenship rights to babies born in
Canada to non-citizens and nonresidents even though the small number
of cases doesnt justify the costs.
The proposal, marked secret and
with inputs from various federal
departments, found fewer than 500
cases of children being born to
foreign nationals in Canada each year,
amounting to just 0.14 per cent of the
360,000 total births per year in the
country.
The issue of citizenship by birth
on Canadian soil once again raises
concerns among critics over the current
governments policy considerations
being based on ideologies rather than
evidence and objective cost-benefit
analyses.
An impartial observer would conclude
that the evidence supports no need
for change, given the small number
of cases. Yet the recommendation
supports the governments public
rhetoric and anecdotes on the need
for change, said Andrew Griffith, a
former director general for citizenship
and multiculturalism at Citizenship
and Immigration Canada, and author
of Policy Arrogance or Innocent Bias.
The
Conservative
government
overhauled the Canadian Citizenship
Act earlier this year by further
restricting eligibility. However, the
birth on soil provision was left intact
and required further studies.
Eliminating birth on soil in order
to ensure that everyone who obtains

citizenship at birth has a strong
connection to Canada would have
significant cost implications, said the
17-page report prepared for former
immigration minister Jason Kenney,
obtained under an access to information
request.
The challenge of communicating
this change would be convincing the
public that restricting the acquisition
of Canadian citizenship is worth that
cost, particularly in a climate of deficit
reduction.

reviewing citizenship policy with
regard to the issue of birth tourism
a term referring to foreigners travelling
to give birth in Canada so the baby can

parents to Canada once they turn 18. It
is unknown how many of them actually
return to their birth country with their
parents, but its believed the number is
low.
As provinces and territories are
responsible for birth registration,
consultation and co-ordination with
the provinces is required, said Alexis
Pavlich, a spokesperson for Alexander.
Canadian citizenship is an honour
and a privilege, and our Conservative
government is committed to increasing
its value. Birth tourism undermines the
integrity of our citizenship program
and takes advantage of Canadian

generosity.
Currently Canada and the United
States are the only countries to have
birth on soil provisions. The United
Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand
and most European countries restrict
citizenship by birth on soil to children
born to parents who are either citizens
or permanent residents.
The potential costs . . . of enforcing
this provision, the potential challenges
with children being born stateless in
Canada and the uncertainty of their
status may outweigh the benefits linked
to limiting citizenship by birth on soil,
said the government report, which also
suggested that the number of anchor
babies could be underestimated.
Discussions with CBSA (Canada
Border Services Agency) have
indicated that limiting citizenship by
birth on soil would likely impact the
removals program. It could be more
challenging to remove families which
have a child born in Canada in terms of
getting access to travel documents for
that child, regardless of whether or not
the child is stateless.
With input from the Department of
Justice, Passport Canada, Foreign
Affairs, CBSA and Public Safety, the
report suggested Ottawa could issue
proof of citizenship to persons born in
Canada or have provinces modify birth
certificates to indicate citizenship status.
Nevertheless,
it
recommended
the removal of the birth rights by
suggesting there may be some
support for a restrictive policy despite

the significant operational and cost
implication for Citizenship and
Immigration Canada.
In the 1990s, the then Liberal
government also toyed with the idea of
removing citizenship as a birth right but
was met with public opposition, and a
letter campaign to then immigration
minister Lucienne Robillard opposing
the plan was launched.
Canada has signed international
conventions that commit us not to
make people stateless. There is a very
real risk that some children will be
stateless as a result of this proposed
change, said the letter signed on by
more than 230 national organizations.

a message to newcomers about

Surrey Resident Frustrated Over Single Family Homes

Used As Wedding 'Banquet Halls'

rented out for large weddings, and
is upset the city hasn't dealt with the
problem.

Ridge area says big parties in the
neighbourhood are driving locals crazy.
But they're not the kind of parties you
might imagine.
"There are two houses on the ridge that
are used as banquet halls," said Bob
Campbell, a member of West Panorama
Ridge Ratepayers Association.
"No one lives in these homes," he
added.
As far as he can tell, large homes have
been purchased for the sole purpose of
renting them as South Asian wedding
banquet halls, parties that often run for
a whole week.
"This usually includes the erection of
multiple large tents, loud music, parties
attended by hundreds of well-wishers,
streets so clogged with cars that only a
single lane can barely pass, fireworks,
multiple processions of limousines and
honking cars - and all of this happens for
three to seven nights in a row and often
until quite late at night. All in a singlefamily residential neighbourhood,"
Campbell said.
In some cases, he said so many cars
pack the neighbourhood's streets that
he doubts emergency vehicles could
get through.
He said the problem began about three
years ago and estimates about 10
celebrations have gone on thus far.
At one such event in May, Campbell
said he approached a member of the
wedding party, who indicated they

were from Calgary and had rented the
home for five nights for $5,000 and
said the owner assured them that all
the neighbours were OK with holding
parties at the house.
"The individual was horrified to
learn that this was all illegal and the
neighbours were not OK with these

issue for more than six months and that
it's a complicated matter.
The activity, if confirmed, is most
certainly illegal, Rehal said.
"Businesses are not permitted to be run
in residential neighbourhoods unless
it's a home-based business," he said.
"The issue of stopping it, that's where
it gets a bit complex. If we're trying to
investigate something like this we need
proof that it's actually being rented.
A lot of the time it's very difficult
to determine if there's a contractual
agreement."
He said the city is often told the homes
are being loaned to family, which is
legal.
"It's very hard to take the next step and
determine that it's not," he said. "We
have to prove it's a business."
The bylaws department currently has
four active cases open, two of which
are located in the Panorama area.
Rehal encourages residents to call

drivers pay $3 per crossing if they have
a TReO decal.
Most TReO customers are already set
for combined billing. All they need is
a TReO account, a payment method on
file, and a TReO decal installed in their
car and theyll start seeing their Golden
Ears crossings show up on their TReO
bill in September. If theyre missing

any of these things, they can contact
TReO to register, update their account
or order a decal.
Golden Ears Bridge drivers will be able
to manage their crossings through their
TReO account. Their trips will be listed
by bridge and by vehicle so its easy to
see when and where they crossed.
The toll systems on the Port Mann
Bridge and the Golden Ears Bridge
have worked together since the new
Port Mann opened in December 2012,
but combined billing adds simplicity
and convenience for drivers. Combined
billing is a new and efficient way to
reconcile tolls between TReO and
Quickpass, and keeps operating costs
low for both organizations.
Each bridge will continue to have
different toll rates, vehicle classifications,
and promotions. Drivers who receive a
Golden Ears bill from Quickpass will
pay their bill to Quickpass. Drivers who
receive a new TReO combined bill with
crossings for both bridges will pay their
tolls to TReO.

Enough As Playoff Race Heats Up
With Vancouver Whitecaps season

now entering its crucial final third, the
intensity has been noticeably ramped
up at training this week as players vie
for places in the starting lineup.
The Whitecaps currently sit in fifth
place in the Western Conference and
know that their fate rests in their own
hands with eleven games remaining
in the regular season. But with a tight
run-in expected, Vancouver arent just
happy to accept where they currently
find themselves and are expecting
more.
"I think if you're content, you're not
pushing for the top and we're pushing
for the top, so we're not content",
midfielder Russell Teibert told reporters
at training. "Today was an intense
training session. It's competitive but
once we leave the field, everyone
forgets about it and we go back to
being a family in the locker room.
"We know that we have a good base, we
know that we have a good team. We're
going forward. We haven't plateaued
and we're going to keep going forward
and we're going to keep pushing. We
know that three points are important,
whether we're at home or whether
we're away, we're going to push for the

win."
Those wins have been hard to come
by recently for Vancouver, with only
one in their last seven games. The
Whitecaps are unbeaten in six matches,
however, but with five of those games
being draws, the focus for this final
period of this season is to somehow
find a way to turn those single points
into three.
"There's been talk a lot about the
draws and everything but we're
still undefeated in a lot of games,
goalkeeper David Ousted said. "We've
only lost two out of the last 17. We still
need to build on that, we still need to
be happy about that, but knowing that
we still need to go for those wins."
"I think we have what it takes to get
to the playoffs and get those wins. It's
down to the little details. We've been
really sound the last three, four weeks
defensively. Those details have gone
our way and we've been working on it.
Now it's time to turn our attention to
the little details offensively."

at the Maracan, the FIFA Technical
Study Group (TSG) has published
its report with the main findings
and comprehensive statistics of the
64-match analysis.
The tactical flexibility displayed by
teams, the fast-paced and attacking
football seen after a long season,
the impact made by individual
attacking players and the successful
implementation of both goal-line
technology (GLT) and vanishing spray
are among the key conclusions of
FIFAs technical experts.
The document is available on FIFA.com.
A DVD with the main findings will be
distributed to all member associations
for educational purposes.
The TSG report is set to take centre
stage as FIFA kick-starts a series of
technical conferences in Panama City
on 11 September.
The events are intended as platforms
for FIFA, the confederations and the
member associations to focus on the
technical and tactical analysis of the
2014 FIFA World Cup.
The head coaches and technical
directors of all FIFA member
associations have been invited to join
the conferences.
While
the
delegations
from
CONCACAF
and
CONMEBOL
will gather in Panama City on 11
and 12 September, further events are
scheduled to take place as follows:

platforms that enable us to share the
main technical findings from the FIFA
World Cup with the confederations and
member associations, thus becoming a
concrete educational tool to promote
football development around the
world, says FIFA Secretary General

The week long FIFA /Oceania Football
Confederation goal keeper course
held at the Fiji Football Association
headquarters in Vatuwaqa is targeted to
improve goal keeping standards in the
country.
Former All Whites goal keeper James
Bannatyne who was part of the
historic New Zealand side at the 2010
FIFA World Cup in South Africa is
conducting the course.
Notable participants from the 24
include Fiji senior team stoppers
Simione Tamanisau and Beniaminio
Mateinaqara.
The objective of the course is to
educate the goal keeper coaches and
also improve the standard of goal
keeping in Fiji,Bannatyne said.
We have got a good group here with
some motivated coaches, goal keepers,
couple of national goal keepers which
is fantastic and the objective is to give
participants the tools to go out there
and work with youth goal keepers and
keepers in the region to improve the
standard.
Bannatyne says the week long course
is a follow up to the one which he
conducted two years ago at the National
Football Academy in Ba.
I did a course in Ba two years ago.
That course was about creating

awareness around the role of the goal
keeper an importance of a goal keeper
coach. This week we are doing a FIFA
course and we are also incorporating in
an OFC Youth License Level 1 which
is a step up of the initial course that we
did.
We will be putting the coaches
through a lot more work on the field in
terms of taking coaching sessions with
both kids and fellow participants. This
will be giving them the tools to go out
there in their schools communities to
develop goal keeping.
The week long course concludes
on Friday and Bannatyne hopes the
knowledge that will be gained by the
participants will add a positive growth
to football in Fiji.
I hope the participants leave with a
sense of excitement. We have a group
that have the opportunity to work with
young goal keepers around the country
and make a difference, Bannatyne
said.
The youngest participant in the course
is 14-year old Alzaar Alam who is the
goal keeper for the Seaqaqa senior side.

Naslund Confirms He Spoke With President Linden

About Management Job With Canucks
When former Vancouver Canucks

captain Markus Naslund resigned as
the general manager of rnskldsvikbased SHL club Modo this past spring,
there was some speculation that he
might join Vancouver's management
team. Naslund was quick to deny
those rumors and even denied being in
Vancouver, where he was frequently
spotted around town.
As it turns out, Naslund did talk with
his former teammate and current
Vancouver Canucks president Trevor
Linden and even confirmed that there
was some talk albeit informal,
preliminary talk about joining
Vancouver's new-look management
team.
"I had some contact with Trevor, but
not more than that he wanted to discuss
some stuff with me (informally),"
said the former Canucks captain of
his conversations with his former
teammate (and fellow former Canucks
captain) in an interview with Jonatan
Lindquist of Expressen.
"Earlier there was talk about (finding

a management role in Vancouver), but
I don't feel ready for that. If I would
decide to work in hockey, it should be
with all of my heart, I can't do anything
at 50 per cent," continued Naslund,
whose No. 19 hangs from the rafters at

Rogers Arena in Vancouver, B.C.
While Naslund, who is credited with
saving Modo a club that was on
the brink of relegation in his first
season wasn't ready to jump into
a management role this summer, at

some point he seems a likely candidate
to work in an NHL front office. His
primary motivation? Winning the
Stanley Cup that alluded his grasp as
a player.
"Absolutely, that's what haunts me
inside and a drive that's certainly there,"
Naslund said of winning a Stanley Cup
as a front-office executive.
"But then you have to weigh that
against everything else. If I'm gonna
work with hockey it's probably gonna
be something over there. Sure, I can
work as a scout here but it will likely
mean that I move," Naslund continued.
"Is it worth it when you have kids
[who] have made their roots here, with
friends, school and the community?
Only for me to get a chance to fulfill
my dream when I've been living that
life for so many years. Now, I'm not
saying that my family is stopping me
in any way, but sometimes I get a bit
of bad conscience over the fact that it's
always on my terms."
Australian Golfer, Steve Jeffress Scores Impressive Win

At Fiji International
Australian Steve Jeffress has recorded
the biggest win of his career, taking
out the inaugural $US1 million Fiji
International.
In an absorbing head-to-head on the
final day, the seasoned Jeffress, 38,
fired three birdies in the final four holes
to finish on two-under 70.
It left him at 10 under for the tournament
and four strokes clear of compatriot
Jake Higginbottom.
After starting the day sharing the
lead, Higginbottom held a two-shot
advantage at the halfway mark.
But his form began to slip on the back
nine holes, bogeying the 10th and the
13th.
At the par-three 15th, with the
frontrunners tied on seven under for
the tournament, Higginbottom hit a
poor tee shot into a hazard short of the
green.
Although he was able to score a bogey,
he lost contact with Jeffress who made
a birdie for a crucial two-shot swing.
Higginbottom suffered another bogey
on the 16th to hand Jeffress a threeshot lead with two to play which he
stretched to a four-shot margin with a
birdie on the 18th.
"I'm over the moon and a bit surprised,"
Jeffress said.
"It has been years of hard work and

family support so it feels very special."
The win earned Jeffress a prize cheque
of $US180,000.
Jeffress' biggest win before this
tournament was the 2006 Victorian
PGA.
PGA of Australia chief executive Brian
Thorburn told Pacific Beat Jeffress
played very well in tricky conditions.
"He's been a journeyman on the pro-am
(professional-amateur) circuit and had
quite some degree of success," he said.
"But he's one of those groups of
players who just consistently perform
and on this occasion he's scored a big
pay cheque, and I think it'll give him
the confidence to continue on the One
Asia and Japanese tours."
Fellow Australians Terry Pilkadaris
and Andrew Dodt tied for third, eight
behind the winner.
Fiji's three-time major winner Vijay
Singh, who designed the Natadola Bay
course, finished off with a 73 to end
tied in 10th place.
"It was tough out there, tough putting,
tough driving," Singh said.
"It just doesn't let up, there is so much
trouble and you have to focus on every
shot."
