Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed has called for prayers for the passengers and crew of the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and their relatives and loved ones. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, in a statement in Nevada (USA) has, appealed to the worldwide Hindu community to
hold special prayer sessions in Hindu temples. Expressing deep sympathies to the families and loved ones of the passengers and the crew of this plane missing since March eight after departing from Kuala Lumpur, Rajan Zed said that it was highly tragic and difficult time for them.

Scholarship Debate Heats Up

Opposing policies will affect some education initiatives brought in by the current government if the Social Democratic and Liberal Party forms the next government. For years the Fijian government was giving out race based scholarships. For the itaukei scholarships, the main criteria was that the applicant had to be a itaukei or Rotuman. The other scholarship system was the Multi Ethnic scholarships which were only given to Indo Fijians and the minority community. The qualifying marks and salary levels of parents for both categories were also different. Starting from this year, the current government decided that race based scholarships should be abolished and scholarship awards should be based on merit. This resulted in the setting up of the National Toppers Scheme. The government has also set up the Tertiary Loan Scheme which has given many people the opportunity to pursue further education after completing secondary education. Prime Minister, Rear Admiral Voreqe Bainimarama said the race based scholarship programme is a divided way of looking at building national capacity. Bainimarama said more Fijian youth than ever before now have access to tertiary education under the new toppers scholarship and Government loan scheme. The Prime Minister said to revert to the old system would rob so many students around the country of the opportunity to pursue their dreams with a university education. Bainimarama said the previous system lacked transparency where people accessed scholarships depending many times on who you were or who you knew. However SODELPA's senior official, Doctor Tupeni Baba stressed that SODELPA will not change it's stand as the new system has not been approved by an elected parliament. Fiji Labour Party Leader, Mahendra Chaudhry is in Australia and could not be reached for a comment on whether the FLP holds the same stance as SODELPA. The National Federation Party said they will discuss this issue in their AGM next Saturday. The People's Democratic Party's Interim President, Adi Sivia Qoro said people should have been consulted before the changes.
PM sets date for his partys registration; launch in May

Prime Minister Rear Admiral (Retired) Voreqe Bainimarama will register his new party on April 22 and launch it in May. He made the announcement in Vanuavatu on Monday night and reiterated it while speaking to the people of Komo Island in the Lau Group. Mr Bainimarama, who is on an official tour of five islands in the Lau Group he has not visited, also told the people there would be no campaign two weeks before the elections. Speaking from Vanuavatu, villager Semi Tadokai who attended the PMs talanoa session, said all their doubts on the elections had been clarified. We have no radio transmission on the island so most of us do not know what to expect in the coming elections until the Prime Minister visited us, Mr Tadokai said. Now we have found out that five parties will contest the elections and we will be given the choice to vote from the 250 names that will be on the ballot paper. Mr Tadokai said the people of Vanuavatu remained committed to the Bainimarama Government and had offered their unwavering support towards the PM. For the people here in Vanuavatu, we are all going to vote for Bainimarama. His government has really proven itself from when they came into power until today, he said. We have seen development coming and assistance in all forms so we would like that to continue. Mr Tadokai said the PM assured that he would visit the island again in July. He said Mondays visit was just to complete his Lau tour, but he will be visiting in July before the elections so we are all looking forward. Mr Bainimarama also revealed that all registration of voters would end 60 days before the elections. For this, a directive will be issued by the President. Political parties are also not allowed to campaign two weeks before polling day. Meanwhile, Mr Bainimarama joined a delegation led by the Minister for Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation from Monday. Together, they visited Vanuavatu before heading to Komo.

Dengue Fever Cases Rise

More travellers are returning to New Zealand with dengue fever with the mosquito-borne disease spreading in the region, health authorities say. There have been 35 cases in Auckland so far this year, with 24 cases from Fiji alone. Health services have advised people travelling to the Pacific to take steps to avoid mosquito bites. Since October 2013, Fiji has recorded more than 10,000 cases of dengue fever, with 12 deaths. Dengue fever has also emerged in French Polynesia, Vanuatu and New Caledonia. The zika virus, which is similar to dengue, is widespread in French Polynesia, with cases also in New Caledonia and the Cook Islands, while another similar virus, chikungunya, has recently appeared in Papua New Guinea. Anyone travelling to these countries is urged to exercise caution, Auckland Medical Officer of Health Dr Simon Baker said. "Dengue fever can be a severe illness," he said. "Those who travel to the Pacific frequently are at risk of repeat infections with different strains of the dengue virus. This can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever, which can be fatal. ''This is heightened by the fact that, for the first time in 20 years, the denguethree strain is active in the region." Dengue fever symptoms begin with a high fever and severe headache. Nausea and vomiting are common, as are joint and muscle pain. The illness can last up to 10 days, although people can feel tired and depressed for weeks. Zika and chikungunya cause similar, but often milder illnesses. There was no vaccine for dengue fever, zika or chikungunya. The only way to prevent infection, Baker said, was to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. "Although the commonest time for bites is early morning and late afternoon, dengue-carrying mosquitoes also bite all through the day," he said. The best protection from mosquito bites included wearing lightly-coloured clothing that covers your arms and legs, and a hat and shoes, applying insect repellent containing 40 per cent diethyltoluamide (DEET), to skin and clothing, and staying in accommodation that was air-conditioned, or had screens on doors and windows. Anyone returning from overseas with dengue symptoms, or feeling generally unwell, should contact their GP or Healthline and let them know where they travelled, Baker said. Paracetamol was recommended rather than aspirin, because aspirin could increase the risk of bleeding. New Zealand mosquitoes do not carry dengue virus, and it is not spread person to person.

$1.25M Help For Dengue Outbreak

The Australian Government will this Friday handover $FJD1.25million to the Fiji government to assist in the response to the Dengue Fever outbreak which has killed 12 people with more than 11,000 confirmed cases. The funds are inclusive of the $FJD170,000 announced by the Australian High Commission in early March 2014. Acting Australian High Commissioner Glenn Miles will do the handover for this assistance which will be channeled through the Australian-funded Fiji Health Sector Support Program (FHSSP) to purchase medical supplies and fund an ongoing public health communications campaign. Fiji Health Sector Support Program says Australias support will complement the Fiji Ministry of Healths efforts in clinical management, vector control (destroying mosquitoes and their breeding grounds), disease surveillance and public communication all of which are needed to manage this disease outbreak.

Suva Court Acquits Gang Rape Accused

A high court in Suva has acquitted four men charged with two counts of 4rape and four counts of aiding and abetting rape of a 17-year-old girl in 2010. Accordingly, Nayavagaki, the third accused, was charged with three counts of aiding and abetting rape, the first and second accused persons, Vilikesa Ramaqa and Niko Qaqara were charged with rape while the fourth accused, Naicoboco, was charged with one count of aiding and abetting rape. Unlicensed Dog Owner Charged

A man charged with keeping an unlicensed dog last year has been ordered to pay $80. Rakesh Roshan Prasad was found guilty before Labasa Magistrate Sia'iniu Fa'alogo Bull. The court heard the dog bit the complainant in February. A report was lodged with the police who found that the dog was unlicensed. In sentencing, Mrs Bull considered Prasad's early guilty plea and cooperation with the police. "You are first offender and a 37-yearold married man," she said. "You are to pay $80 before the 28th of this month." Mrs Bull said if Prasad failed to pay by then, he would be jailed for 10 days. Prasad has been given 28 days to appeal.

Juveniles In Court For Theft

Five juveniles aged between 14 to 17 years are to appear in court for their alleged involvement in a series of car break-ins last week in Nasinu area. They are accused for allegedly breaking into five vehicles and stealing items which were sold later in Suva. The five allegedly spent the money on alcohol. They have been charged with damaging property and theft. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said this was not the first time for these youths to be appearing in court. They also have other similar cases pending in court, Naisoro said. The case has worried the Police Department as these youth are now having to deal with the law rather than focusing on preparing themselves for the future that lies ahead. We are urging others in the same age group not to be easily involved in such illegal activities for the sole purpose of a few hours of enjoyment which in turn affects their future. The Fiji Police Force has pleaded with parents and guardians to talk to their children about the consequences of getting involved in such activities. The Fiji Police Force will continue to issue such advisories as we dont want to have other youths getting caught on the wrong side of the law.

Lal made the comments after he was notified that boarders of a female dominated school have been fed by church members as the school is alleged to not have any ration for its boarding students. Lal said though the ministry has not been notified of this, the school should provide for its boarding students because the students pay for their boarding fees instead of the ministry. We only pay very small amount for the boarding fees but parents can apply for remission of fees if they cannot afford hostel fees, Lal said. Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma secretary for communication, Reverend James Bhagwan said their secretary for Education has not received any complaints from the school. Our secretary for education met with the school principal but nothing was raised and we havent been given any information about it, Bhagwan said. Cell groups of the nearby congregation have had a day in a week to provide the students with their three main meals.
Corrections Service Denies Assault On Dead Inmate
The Fiji Corrections Service has denied claims circulating on social media alleging that assaults by corrections officers led to the death of inmate, Viliame Tawake. In an official statement issued the corrections service stated that Mr Tawake had suffered from a short illness. Mr Tawake was in fact taken to the hospital on February 28 after suffering a short illness. He was released from the hospital on Saturday morning (March 1). (On) Saturday evening; he was escorted back to the hospital and was released on Sunday morning (March 2) after he was treated by the medical
authorities. On Sunday night, his illness recurred and became more severe and while arrangements were still being made for his transportation to the hospital, Mr Tawake passed away. Meanwhile, Mr Tawakes family is disputing reports on social media that he had severe injuries. Speaking to the media, Mr Tawakes wife, Maria Makarita, said they only saw swelling and blisters on the right side of his face and that he had also bitten his tongue. She said the family could not determine reports on social media that Mr Tawake suffered severe injuries because they were only allowed to see his body from his neck upwards in order to identify him. Ms Makarita said. (We didnt dress his body at the hospital because the nurse informed us that his body had become soft. It was wrapped in cloth with plastic and a masi (tapa cloth). Ms Makarita said what really upset her was the fact that the corrections service did not contact her to inform her that her husband had been ill and was taken to the hospital twice before his death. He died on Monday morning (March 3) and when the officers came to convey the news of his death they informed me that he had been ill and was taken to the hospital twice during the weekend. Why didnt they call me when he had been taken to the hospital? Ms Makarita said the family was still awaiting the post mortem examination result.

Dr Luveni has promised that she would be sending two more coconut scrapping machines for the man in the next boat visiting the island after he made a request. Romina Rosie Goundar is one of the grateful hearts who had her son examined by doctors from Shriners Hospitals for Children at the Colonial War Memorial War Hospital on Tuesday. Shoheel Chandra Goundar, 6, was born at Rakiraki Hospital and subsequent to his birth he had episodes of apnea. She said her son had spastic diplegia, a form of Cerbal Palsy and his left side was more effective than the right side. Mrs Goundar said she was told by the doctors that Shoheel had a good capacity to understand and follow commands but was not able to execute the commands. She said she was overjoyed when his son started walking last year after physiotherapy. Im really grateful for the doctors who have come to Fiji and are treating children free of charge. I have faith in the orthopedic surgeons and I hope my son gets better soon. She said Shoheel wanted to become a pilot and she hoped one day his son would be able to achieve his dream.

Minimum Wage Now In Effect: Jone Usamate

Fiji's new minimum wage of $2 per hour announced by the government last month came into force on March 1, confirms the Minister for Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Jone Usamate. Usamate in a government statement said the National Minimum Wage (NMW) Regulations had been gazetted and all relevant employers must adjust their workers wage levels and employment conditions to comply with the NMW Regulations and the Employment Relations Promulgation 2007 (ERP). The NMW rate of $2 will cover all employers in the informal sector, including employers in the formal sector not covered under the 10 current Wages Regulations Orders (WROs). It will benefit a total of at least 72,000 workers," Usamate said. The overarching objective of this major wage policy is to alleviate poverty among the most marginalised workers in the informal and formal sectors. It is to build a better Fiji for these workers, who have been disadvantaged and disregarded for a long period of time." This historical initiative is in line with governments commitment under the Peoples Charter for Change, Peace and Progress (PCCPP) on reducing poverty to a negligible level by 2015 while enhancing workplace and national productivity. Usamate cautions employers not to pay below the NMW ($2 per hour) rate and encourages employers to adopt a productivity-based performance system. He said the workers rights stipulated in the NMW Regulations were in addition to their rights under the Employment Relations Promulgation . All entitlements and fundamental principles of rights at work under the ERP are still applicable to all workers covered under the NMW Regulations. For example, workers entitlements such as annual leave, public holiday leave, maternity leave, sick leave, bereavement leave and all other benefits provided under the ERP must be fully awarded when due," he added. Under the regulations all employers are required to display a written NMW notice in their workplaces for the purpose of informing and educating the workers. The minister reiterates that on the spot fine of $100 will be issued if employers refuse to follow any part of the NMW Regulations and further penalties will be issued upon breach of the Regulations. On conviction, an employer is liable to a fine of $20,000 or two years imprisonment or both. The ministry in its effort to provide efficient and effective supportive role for the implementation of the NMW has established a Wages Unit which will provide professional secretariat support to the 10 WROs. Usamate said his ministry would continue to promote the fundamental social justice principles and rights at work with the implementation of the various components of Labour Reforms including the realisation of decent wages, decent conditions and decent work environment that promotes dignity in the workplace for all types of work.

26 new homes have been opened as part of rehab relief efforts for Tropical Cyclone Evan which struck Fiji in December 2012. The newly opened homes in Sigatoka and Ba, brings the total number of homes opened this year to 259. Commissioner Western Commander Joeli Cawaki said the development reflects governments objective to return the lives of those affected to normalcy. The Tavua Magistrates Court transferred a case relating to burglary and rape to the High Court in Lautoka. Jale Fatiaki, 20, and Laitia Nalawa, 31, have been charged with one count each of aggravated burglary and one count each of theft. Fiji's Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board (TSLB) will soon announce the names of applicants who have been successful in securing loans to study at tertiary level. Board Chairman Seeto confirmed to the media that the applications for Loan Scheme closed on March 5 and they are working on fusing a lot of things and he hopes that they would be more efficient next year. The High Court in Suva after a retrial has reduced the jail term of a 27-yearold woman who was sentenced to life for drowning her two daughters in January, 2008. Ronika Devi who pleaded guilty to the charges of manslaughter and infanticide was handed a 2 years imprisonment suspended for 3 years by Judge Justice Janaka Bandara. Devi was accused of drowning her daughters; Tanisa Pratap (1 year and 9 months old) and an unnamed baby girl (20 days old) in the Rewa River after having a heated argument with her husband after he failed to return home with diapers.
Killer Mum Gets Suspended Sentence
The court accepted psychiatric evidence that Devi was severely depressed when she committed the acts. Justice Bandara ruled that Devi's deed was a serious insult to mothers who have high expectations for their childrens future and that the failure of her husband to return home with diapers is a lame excuse to take two lives of innocent girls. But he noted her willingness to plead guilty to the killings, that she is a first offender, is not likely to repeat the crime and that the length of time she had already spent in jail waiting for a conclusion to her case, were sufficient reasons to reduce her term.
Mt Isa Fijians Keen On 2014 Election

Two Fijians who now work in the mines in Mount Isa, north west Queensland where 280 other Fijians live, say they are looking forward to the election. Former local journalist, Felise Tova, and his mate, Edward Wade, have been keeping well abreast of news from Fiji in the lead up to the election not so much to vote as their Fijian passports have expired but driven by the hope to get Fiji "back to the way it was in its heyday and moving forward to better times." Although very interested in proceedings locally, the two, the report says are unable to vote because for like many other Fijians living abroad "they have allowed their passports to expire because before 2011 they were not permitted to have dual citizenship." Tova says with a lot of his family still residing in Fiji, "we're very, very interested in what's happening there." He said getting Fiji back to the way it was will help improve lives. His friend, Wade, is of the view that Australian media does not accurately represent the real situation in Fiji, saying that in his view "Fiji has always been democratic." "I understand the coups to your view might be a bad thing, but to me back then I was all for it. "I suppose you have to have lived in Fiji to understand what it's going through." Tova said the political situation in Fiji is such that "it's not easy for the lay person on the street to know what's happening, there are a lot of twists and turns" adding that there are lot of things to learn for the ordinary Australian. The Fiji High Commission recently visited 50 places around Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT registering Fijians to vote in the September poll. They also headed to Mount Isa and Adelaide after a special request from the local communities. The election this year will be Fiji's first in eight years.
Travellers heading to the Pacific Islands are being warned of a dengue fever outbreak. Fiji has reported more than 10,000 cases of the illness since October last year, including 12 deaths. Dengue fever has also emerged in French Polynesia, Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Auckland has seen 35 cases so far this year 24 of which came from Fiji. "Dengue fever can be a severe illness," says medical officer of health Dr Simon Baker. "Those who travel to the Pacific frequently are at risk of repeat infections with different strains of the dengue virus." Travellers planning to enter the Pacific region are being warned to exercise caution against mosquito bites. Dengue fever symptoms start with a high fever and severe headache, followed by nausea, vomiting and joint or muscle pain.

The bodies of two teenage cousins reported missing last Saturday were discovered in the Nadi River on Monday evening, leaving a family in heartache. Nadi home. Shanti Devi said she last spoke to Philip on Saturday morning, from her workplace in Waimanu Road, Suva. Later I received a phone call from his father at 6:30 pm Saturday saying that Philip was lost at the river but I still felt that he was alive and would return, Ms Devi said. It was very shocking when I was told that his body had been found and was at the Nadi Hospital. The younger of two children, Philip has an older sister in New Zealand and was looking forward to meeting his sisters baby. Police said a post mortem examination on the victims would be conducted as investigations continue.

Seventy- Seven (77) per cent of the sixty four new cases on people living with HIV in Fiji recorded last year fall in the age category of 20 years to 39 years. This has been revealed in the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Health. A total of 546 HIV positive cases were recorded in Fiji Since 1989 with heterosexual being the main mode of transmission followed by prenatal and homosexual spread at 5 per cent each with a transmission among bisexuals at 1 per cent. This increase has caused the Ministry of Health to encourage HIV tests to the public. This assists clinics to do a better follow up of patients and ensure they are on HIV treatment. Early detection of positive cases has reduced the number of patients suffering from any other related infections and even death. The ministry says that early detection also allows HIV/AIDS positive persons

Fijis National flag was again hoisted up amongst those of commonwealth nations at the Commonwealth Secretariat gardens in London following the decision to change the status of her membership last week. At the 43rd meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) in London on 14 March 2014, CMAG "decided that Fiji's current full suspension from the Commonwealth should be changed to suspension from the councils of the Commonwealth, thus permitting Fiji once again to participate in a range of Commonwealth activities, including the Commonwealth Games, recognising the role of sport in bringing people together." Chaired by Hon. Bernard K. Membe, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Republic of Tanzania CMAG welcomed the significant progress made in Fiji towards holding national elections by September 2014. These included the promulgation of a new constitution; the enrolment of more than 540,000 voters; the establishment of an independent Electoral Commission; and the commencement of a dialogue between the Commission and political stakeholders. The Group welcomed the decision by the Fiji Elections Office to open Voter Registration Offices around the country to ensure more voters will register in anticipation of the planned elections.
The Dengue branch of the US Center for Disease Control is another agency that is responding to the Minister for Healths call for assistance to help Fiji in the recent Dengue outbreak. National adviser for Communicable Disease Dr Mike Kama said laboratory support is one form of assistance provided by the US Center for Disease Control to the Ministry. He said this laboratory support allows for a small number of patient serum samples and also some tissue samples from dengue fatal cases to be sent for reference testing to the United States. Dr Kama added that the objective of sending these tissue samples from fatal cases of suspected dengue fever is to determine whether the cause of death is in fact dengue fever. He said one of the reasons for patients serum samples for further testing is to determine whether the dengue strain

The Fijian government has extended the amnesty period for late birth registrations. The decision was made following a huge demand for the registration service in the Lau Group. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said amnesty was granted after the government team which is currently conducting registrations in the Group requested for an extension. The demand for this service is so high in Lau that the team needs more time to finish their work and make sure no Fijian is left behind, he said. Sayed-Khaiyum said the response to governments amnesty has been very strong across the whole country, especially in rural and maritime communities.

Revitalising Fijis rice industry in the Northern Division will be a key objective behind regular meetings to be held between Government and the Rewa Rice Company in Dreketi. Government, through the Office of the Commissioner Northern, will now meet with the rice company in the North on a monthly basis as part of efforts to boost production. Acting Commissioner Northern Alipate Bolalevu said with a new rice mill expected to open soon in Dreketi, the focus now is to ensure consistent production. Labour Pays Out 25K In Compensation

The Ministry of Labour gave out another $25,000 for compensation to families of workers that died or received injuries in their line of work. Receiving $10, 000 was wife of late Fiji Military Forces Engineer soldier Eminoni Tubuna. Karalaini Tubuna told the media that the compensation was the first for her family to receive since her late husbands death in 2011. She said the money received today would be used for her two sons education. I thank the Ministry of Labour for this great help to my family, Tubuna said. Another recipient of the compensation fund was Mohini Lata, wife of late Satendra Swami who died while at work at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital as an Orderly. Swami was the sole bread winner in his family when he died in 2012. Lata said the money received would also be to help her two children with their education as her eldest daughter is looking forward to joining a tertiary institution next year. My daughter is in form 7 and my son is in form 4 at Gospel High School, Im really happy for this, at least we have received something instead of nothing, Lata said. Another recipient of the compensation fund from government were brothers Ravi Prakash and Ashish Prakash who received about $2,500 each for their late brother Alvin Prakash. Alvin was a police officer at the Samabula Police Station when he got injured in 2010 and died three years later. Australian Company Oz Dairy Accused On Chinese Television

Chinese television has accused an Australian dairy company of tampering with the expiry date on thousands of cans of baby formula. The issue could damage Australia's growing dairy market in China amid recent broader Chinese consumer concerns about quality control. Melbourne-based business Oz Dairy, which exports baby formula around the world, was among the companies listed in an annual television gala that aims to protect Chinese consumers. The host of the program said nearly 20,000 cans of the formula had conflicting use-by dates which appear to have been extended by a year. The Chinese distributor intercepted the product before it was put on sale. Oz Dairy managing director Christopher Murfett says the formula was within date and the mislabelling was just an innocent mistake. "The infant formula hasn't expired. It's simply a print mistake on a label," he said. "We're sincerely apologising to the China government and the China community. "Unfortunately, it happened through a process through the factory. We've addressed it and we've made sure that [it] can't happen again." The industry says demand for Australian baby formula has grown since the contamination scandal in 2008 where products made by a Chinese company were deliberately tainted with the chemical melamine, killing six children and poisoning nearly 300,000 others. Mr Murfett says Australian products are the best in the world and the negative publicity has already affected its business. A US student has been jailed for 18 months for hacking the online accounts of Miss Teen USA and more than 100 other women in several countries and threatening to publish nude photos of them. Jared James Abrahams surrendered in September to FBI agents probing socalled "sextortion" cases, in which he made demands in return for agreeing not to release the pictures. The investigation involved multiple victims in California, Canada, Moldova and Russia. The 20-year-old Abrahams, who hacked into as many as 150 online accounts and forced victims to engage in Skype sessions in which he convinced two teenagers to undress, made a plea deal with prosecutors in November. He pleaded guilty to four counts three of extortion and one of computer hacking - according to the US Attorney's office in Los Angeles. The most high-profile victim was Cassidy Wolf, who won the Miss Teen USA pageant in August. She and Abrahams graduated in 2012 from the same school in Temecula, about 150 kilometres south-east of Los Angeles. Scam Targets Indian Migrants

Indian immigrants are being bullied out of thousands of dollars by overseas scammers who are threatening them with deportation. At least 11 Indian immigrants have fallen victim to the scam in the past six weeks, each paying about $3,000. Detective Sergeant Graham Shand said the scammers, who appeared to be based overseas, were targeting Indians who had recently returned from holidays in India. "I've had 11 complainants, all of Indian descent. All have flown over to India, and when they've arrived back in New Zealand they have been contacted by a number they believed to be Immigration New Zealand." They were told they had filled out immigration forms incorrectly and needed to pay money to Indian immigration services, Mr Shand said. "It was (sold to them as) a fee, a fine for the error they had made. Basically, they were bullied and told they could be deported." The immigrants were told to transfer funds to accounts in India through Credit Union, Mr Shand said. The victims were phoned by someone posing as an Immigration NZ employee. The number on their phones was an Immigration NZ-registered one in Auckland. It is believed the scammers used technology to disguise or change the number, called "caller ID spoofing". Police have not yet identified how the scammers knew to target Indian immigrants returning from India. "We've spoken to Immigration NZ and they haven't been able to identify a common link for where the information could be being sourced from."

Wireless Carriers Hike Prices Across Canada

Smartphone plans begin at $80/month Canadas big three wireless carriers have hiked the base prices for new plans by $5 in most markets over the past two months. Rogers, Telus and Bell Mobility now all charge $80 per month for new smartphone plans with a new contract, $5 more than what many of those same plans cost when they were introduced last year. The prices for other smartphone plans with more data cost upwards of $145. The price hikes affect every province except Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The $80 a month plan includes 500 MB of data, unlimited nationwide calling, unlimited messaging, voicemail and call display. Existing plans are unaffected. Last summer, in response to the incoming wireless code of conduct, the three wireless carriers simplified their pricing models for new plans. Instead of choosing different plans based on minutes, data and messaging, customers instead pay a baseline fee depending on the type of phone they have, and then add a basket of data which can be shared by members of the same household. Initially, those base prices were $55 per month for higher-priced smartphones such as a Samsung Galaxy S4 or iPhone 5s, $45 per month for other, cheaper smartphones, and $35 per month for already unlocked smartphones. The prices for all three of these base prices has been increased. Push for more competition The three companies came under fire by the federal government last year, which is pushing for a fourth wireless competitor in all four markets. Quebec-based Videotron was awarded 700 MHz licences in Ontario, B.C. and Alberta, and may emerge as a fourth wireless competitor in those markets. Manitoba and Saskatchewan, however, have more competitive pricing. Due to strong regional competitors in SaskTel and MTS, Bell and Rogers plans start at $65 per month with five GB of data. An equivalent plan elsewhere in the country costs $55 more per month. When asked for comment, a Rogers spokesperson said that "needs of our customers are changing as theyre doing more than ever before with their connected device." Telus said while it has raised the cost of its base plans in January, it has decreased the cost of its most widely used data add-ons last week. The media also asked Bell for comment on this story, but the company did not respond to inquiries.

Canada's Finance Minister Jim Flaherty Resigns

Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has resigned from cabinet to prepare for work in the private sector, he announced in a news release Tuesday. "Yesterday, I informed the prime minister that I am resigning from cabinet. This was a decision I made with my family earlier this year, as I will be returning to the private sector," Flaherty said in a statement. Conservative sources said that Flaherty spoke to his family at Christmas and made the decision then. He started calling close friends at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, after the markets closed, to let them know of his decision. Flaherty isn't immediately going to a job in the private sector. "As I reflect on my almost two decades in politics, I am proud of the accomplishments of the governments I was part of, provincial and federal.... Now, I will focus on life beyond politics as I return to the private sector. I believe that I have served my country, province and constituents of WhitbyOshawa to the best of my abilities and thank them for their continued trust and support for almost two decades," Flaherty said in the statement. Flaherty is staying on as an MP for the time being, his spokesman said. Battled health problem Flaherty has spent more than a year dealing with health issues and has faced repeated questions about whether he would retire. A year ago, Flaherty disclosed he was being treated for a serious dermatological condition known as bullous pemphigoid. The treatment involved taking a strong steroid called prednisone, which is often accompanied by serious sideeffects. Flaherty said in his statement that he is "on the road to a full recovery" and that his departure from politics is "not related in any way" to his health. Last November, Flaherty told reporters he would run in 2015, but last month said in an interview that he wasn't sure. New Democrat finance critic Peggy Former MP Ted Menzies, who was Flaherty's parliamentary secretary for three years, said Flaherty was the longest-serving finance minister in the G7 when the global recession hit. "He provided leadership and guidance. So not only did he guide us through it, he helped other countries through it as well," said Menzies, who retired last year to become president of CropLife Canada. Government is delivering on its Mental Health Action Plan to improve care for patients with severe addiction and mental health needs by launching an Assertive Outreach Team in Vancouver and opening a new Acute Behavioural Stabilization Unit at St. Paul's Hospital. "In the past, we have seen patients with severe mental illness and addiction cycle through our health-care and justice system," said Health Minister Terry Lake. "The Vancouver team is the first of its kind in B.C. and, combined with the expansion of services at St. Paul's Hospital, we will be able to provide more complete and supportive care to this vulnerable patient group." The Assertive Outreach Team includes a nurse, social worker, psychiatrist, physician and Vancouver Police Department staff. Members of the team work together to support patients who suffer from severe addictions and mental health issues and transition them from local emergency departments in Vancouver to appropriate community services. "We recognized that individuals with severe mental health and addiction challenges have difficulty connecting to community supports after their medical needs have been met," said Anne McNabb, Vancouver Coastal Health's director of mental health and addiction, inner city. "This team takes a rapid, hands-on approach to ensure patients are completing the transition from acute care to community care." The Assertive Outreach Team is a collaboration between Vancouver

The $1.2-million program is expected to substantially increase Vancouver Coastal Health's capacity to serve clients who are not currently engaged with traditional mental health and addiction services. "Our ultimate goal would be to guarantee the safety and well-being of every person we encounter who is suffering from mental illness," said VPD Inspector Ralph Pauw. "Assertive Outreach Teams in our communities bring us a step closer to that goal." The Assertive Outreach Team will help support patients transitioning from the new Acute Behavioural Stabilization Unit at St. Paul's. This new unit is
open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provides nine dedicated emergency psychiatric beds located in a separate area of St. Paul's emergency department. A first of its kind for Vancouver, the unit offers short stay admissions (up to 48 hours) and was renovated to increase the capacity of St. Paul's emergency department to treat this complex patient population. "St. Paul's Hospital has seen a 63% increase in the number of patients it treats with mental illness and addictions issues since 2009," said Dr. Anna Nazif, medical director emergency psychiatry, St. Paul's Hospital. "This area provides us with an opportunity to further improve the care we provide to patients."
The unit is staffed with an interdisciplinary team of emergency physicians, emergency nurses, psychiatrists, registered psychiatric nurses, psychiatric assessment nurses and social workers, and receives input from addictions consultants. Staffing levels have been increased to include a clinical nurse leader/educator, an emergency room nurse and a social worker. "Addressing the interplay that often exists between severe addiction and mental illness is an important step to ensure we can provide appropriate care to this vulnerable population," said Dianne Doyle, president and CEO of Providence Health Care. "As the primary hospital serving Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, St. Paul's Hospital is committed to further enhancing our care to patients who have mental illness and the complexity of co-occurring illnesses such as addiction." These two supports are part of the strategies being developed in response to the report, Improving Health Services for Individuals with Severe Addiction and Mental Illness. The Ministry of Health is making available a total of $20 million for regional health authorities to invest in more local programs and supports to improve care for this high needs population. In November 2013, the Ministry of Health created a mental health action plan to reduce barriers and service gaps, and support evidencebased solutions for patients with severe addictions and mental illness.

Children who outgrow one type of food allergy may develop a more severe and persistent type of allergy to the same food, experts say. They suggest that physicians and parents carefully monitor children with food allergies to recognise early signs of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) - a severe and often painful allergy that has been increasing in recent years. "These two types of allergy have some elements in common, but patients with EoE usually do not go on to develop tolerance to the foods that trigger EoE," said paediatric allergist Jonathan M. Spergel from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. EoE involves swelling and inflammation of the esophagus. Often painful, EoE may cause weight loss, vomiting, heartburn and swallowing difficulties. It can affect any age group, but is often discovered first in children experiencing feeding difficulties and failure to thrive. The researchers team compared EoE with IgE-mediated food allergy - the more familiar type of food allergy. Nuts, eggs or milk, for example, may trigger hives, other skin reactions, vomiting or other symptoms. The researchers performed a retrospective analysis of 1,375 children for EoE between 2000-12. Of that number, 425 children could be shown to have a definite food causing their condition - most commonly milk, egg, soy and wheat. Within that subgroup, 17 patients had developed EoE to a food after having outgrown IgE-mediated allergy to that specific food. "The pattern we found in those 17 patients suggests that the two types of food allergy operate by different mechanisms and cause different functional changes," Spergel said. "However, this pattern also raises the possibility that prior IgE-mediated food allergy may predispose a patient to developing EoE to the same food." According to the research, patients who undergo desensitisation therapy for IgE-mediated foods allergies subsequently develop EoE to the same food - a fact that physicians should consider in managing care for patients with food allergies. Comedians Bharti Singh, Sunil Pal and Kiku Sharda (Palak of 'Comedy Nights with Kapil') make their Marathi film debut with Famous, directed by National award-winning director Shivaji Lotan Patil. The film is about a journalist who makes and breaks stars' careers, but in a funny way. Bharti says, `I got a chance to give a lot of inputs to my character. The Marathi film industry has a history of delivering blockbusters and I am happy to be a part of it.`

A war of words has erupted between two unlikely candidates: Rishi Kapoor and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Both are talented actors, belong to different generations and are poles apart as far as film choices, lineage and career go but that hasnt stopped them from taking potshots at each other, though from the chain of events, it appears Nawazuddin is not willing to take on Rishi who shows no signs of stopping. So how did it all begin? Apparently, Nawazuddins take on clichd romantic and formulaic films and running around trees has had Rishi hopping mad. Rishi, who does not like negative remarks on his profession, apparently said: I have read that some actor named Nawazuddin said that romantic heroes just run around trees! It is difficult to bloody sing songs and romance the heroine. How could he say such a thing? Nawazs reply: What I meant was that when you do the same thing over and over again, for 30 to 40 years, it becomes easy to follow the same format. Ek hi tarah ka romance... it is all so clichd. Well guess what? Rishi wasnt about to let up on this one! He blasted, You (Nawazuddin) havent done it (running around trees) in your life; neither will you get a chance to do it. And you arent capable of doing it either. You dont have the image; you dont have the talent. And Nawaz shot back, He cant say that, I will improve myself. If I had to romance in a film, I will do it differently, whether it works or not. I respect Rishi Kapoor, I am his big fan. If he feels I am an average actor, it is a compliment. Actually, I am below average. He is extremely talented, and I am still trying to be an actor. What next Rishi?

Little did Bollywoods favourite Punjabi mom expect that she would receive such a cold welcome in Chandigarh Kirron Khers recent visit to Chandigarh proved to be a disaster. The actor is contesting the Lok Sabha elections this year on behalf of the Bharatiya Janat Party (BJP). Not only was her car pelted with eggs, but there was a section of her own party members labeling her outsider and showing black flags in protest against her nomination from Chandigarh to contest polls. Kirron was accompanied by husband Anupam Kher, who seemed not just happy but extremely supportive about his wifes political aspirations. Ms Kher beat former Union Minister Harmohan Dhawan, Satya Pal Jain, and Chandigarh BJP president Sanjay Tandon to be named as BJPs candidate from Chandigarh. Kirron herself downplayed the whole drama around her visit and rubbished the outsider claims, she said, I am a daughter of Chandigarh. I was born and brought up here. I have lived here. Those opposing me are also from the BJP family. We will pacify them. Action speaks louder than words. Even the title of the latest release from Mongrel Media may throw some people off. Pity. Brave souls who take in Nymphomaniac at the Vancity Theatre on Seymour Street will be justly rewarded. Well worth a visit this searing drama features superb performances and an interesting glimpse into the life of one lonely, desperate woman. Controversial director Lars Von Trier has a reputation for pushing the envelop when creating meaningful film experiences. Here is no exception. Into the dark recesses of the mind we go to glimpse into the eventful ( and unforgettable ) life of our central character, a woman named Joe. Our heroine/victim is played at two stages in her life: young and old. To learn more about this woman's plight we see her budding sexuality as expressed by newcomer Stacy Martin before turning to her more mature/ ripened wants and urges as conveyed by Charlotte Gainsbourg (21 Grams), Many films are told in flashback style with limited success. Von Trier does a great job introducing Joe as a victim whose taken in by a Good Samaritan called Seligman, played to perfection and with abundant thought, wisdom and strained sincerity by Swedish acting ace Stellan Skarsgard (Mama Mia!). Over time and by way of a very long bedside chat we bear witness to an unbelievable story that centers on sex and obsessive behaviour. Left used and abused we see this woman's introduction to sex as a girl, then teen before becoming even more infatuated with her body. She just can't get enough. Earthy delights give way to more kinky abuse as Joe becomes a production line for men wanting her body and vice versa. Experimentations with carnal cravings have no bounds for this lady as she indulges in threesomes and multiple partners before getting into more violent scenes such as S & M. 4. Use a Cosmetic Clay Mask to Soak Up the Oils You do not have to have a special $50 jar of facial mask clay for this. You do not have to put essential oil into your mask (if you dont want to, but you can). All you need is cosmetic clay and water (or apple cider vinegar, which is how I like to do it). Where do you get cosmetic clay? Mountain Rose Herbs carries a variety of it at very reasonable prices (bentonite, french green, rhassoul, and fullers earth). But if you have a local herb shop, the chances are, theyll have some there, too. How to make a blackhead-busting mask with clay:
Again, you can add goodies like rosewater or a drop or two of essential oils to your clay, but this is not necessary for removing blackheads. So the basics are: Combine 1 Tbsp clay with 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar (or pure water) and stir until you have a paste without lumps in it. Spread over your whole clean face, or just the areas where you have blackheads. Allow this to dry for 1520 minutes. Take a warm, wet washcloth and press it to the mask for a few seconds, and then slowly and gently wipe off. 5. If All Else Fails, Take a Clean Toothbrush to the Area Do not use this method unless all else fails.
