Presidents Report
It is amazing how the weeks are rolling by. It only seems
yesterday since the changeover and we are almost into
September.
We recognised Daodil Day with some very vibrant yel-
low daodils decorang the tables, plus a $50 donaon
to the very worthwhile cause of cancer research. I hope
the members or guests who were lucky enough to win a
bunch of daodils enjoyed them.
Caie Kavanagh reminded us all of the value of our Ro-
tary programmes as she spoke about her personal Youth
Exchange Program to Japan. It is very rewarding to see
how our eorts can take a young person and give them
the condence to travel overseas, deal with an event
like a major earthquake and be condent in public
speaking.
On that note, I remind members of our new iniave
with the cluster, where Beaumaris North, Black Rock,
Sandringham, Hampton, and McKinnon Primary Schools
will parcipate in the rst ever Grade 6 " Speaking Con-
test", when two candidates from each School join the

lege.
Malcolm Sawle and I aended a cluster meeng on
membership. It was good to connect with our
neighbouring clubs and explore ideas that may help
us collecvely.
Our Birthing Centre project at Sandringham Hospi-
tal is well underway with all the funds from Cluster
Clubs now in hand. Chris D'Arcy will be arranging a
suitable me to present these funds to the Hospital.
A larger event will follow to ocially open the new
Centre when all the furniture is in place.
Judy Reeves, Director at Sandringham Hospital is
our next speaker. Being the 50th year of the hospi-
tals existence, I am certain she will have some in-
teresng facts about the past and the future of this
very important service right here in Bayside.
Heather Chisholm will be in the chair.
See you on Thursday night.

Speaker: Caitie Kavanagh
Topic: Youth Exchange Experience
Caitie was sponsored
as an Exchange Stu-
dent to Japan in 2011.
She previously spoke
to the Club in March
2012 about her expe-
riences and has come
back to update us
about what has hap-
pened since.
Much of Caitie's talk and presentation material cov-
ered her time in Japan. As indicated above this is
well covered elsewhere. The last time Caitie spoke
she used comprehensive notes while this time the
whole talk was equally well presented without any
notes in site.
Caitie started out by thanking Beaumaris Rotary for
the opportunity she had been given and what a
transformative experience it had been for her.
While she had originally intended to study Architec-
ture she is now in the first year of University study-
ing Japanese and Korean with a minor in linguistics.
She hopes to be able to use her language and cul-
tural skills in a diplomatic or similar career.
On arriving back from Japan Caitie had to repeat
Year 11 as well as change schools as her parents
had relocated to Phillip Island. She went to Newha-
ven College which fortuitously, or through good
planning, had strong links to Japan through teach-
ing, exchange students and student visits.
So Caitie was able to build new friendships with stu-
dents at the school with young women who spoke
Japanese and had the same interests as her. She
was also able to revisit Japan as part of a school
trip.
As well as that she had a further extended visit
back to Japan with her close friends and was able
to catch up with a number of her host families and
her brothers and sisters. One of the features of
all her trips to Japan were repeated visits to Disney-
land!
Caitie is a terrific example of the benefits of Rotary
Youth Exchange; she has obviously benefitted
greatly from the experience and would have un-
doubtedly been a great ambassador for Rotary, her
family and Australia (even if she is travelling on a
Kiwi passport).
I will circulate the previous version of In Gear Num-
ber 34 12 March 2012 which has a comprehensive
description of Caities time in Japan. The accom-
panying slide show can be found on our website at
http://beaumarisrotary.com/new-generations/
Therefore I have focussed this issue on what has
happened since arriving back in Australia.
