AISC Steel Construction Manual 13th Edition

This Steel Construction Manual is the thirteenth major update of the AISC
Steel Construction Manual, which was first published in 1927 !ith this
re"ision, the pre"iousl# separate Allowable Stress $esi%n and &oad and
'esistance (actor $esi%n methods ha"e been combined Thus, this Manual
replaces both the 9th )dition AS$ Manual and the *rd )dition &'($ Manual
Much of the +SS Connections Manual has also been incorporated and
updated in this Manual

The followin% specifications, codes, and standards are printed in /art 1- of
this Steel Construction Manual0

2,,1 AISC Specification for Structural Steel 2uildin%s

2,,3 'CSC Specification for Structural 4oints 5sin% ASTM A*21 or
A39, 2olts

2,,1 AISC Code of Standard /ractice for Steel 2uildin%s and 2rid%es

The followin% resources are also included on the C$ included with this
edition of the Steel Construction Manual0

AISC $esi%n ).amples, which illlustrates the application of tables and
specification pro"isions that are included in this Manual

AISC Shapes $atabase 61*, and 61*,+

2ac7%round and supportin% literature for the AISC Steel Construction
Manual

The followin% major impro"ements ha"e been made in this re"ision0

The number of desi%n e.amples has been e.panded and included in a
companion C$

All tabular information has been updated to compl# with the 2,,1
Specification for Structural 2uildin%s and the standards and other
documents referenced therein

Shape information has been updated to ASTM A-8,1, includin% the
new !*- shape series

$esi%n methods ha"e been delineated b# ma7in% use of a dual8color
format, with numbers indicated in blue t#pe representin% &'($ desi%n
"alues, and numbers indicated in %reen shadin% representin% AS$
desi%n "alues Tabulated "alues presented in blac7 t#pe are
independent of desi%n method
Information on +SS connections has been inte%rated throu%hout this
Manual
!9 members ha"e been reinte%rated into desi%n tables with
cautionar# statements re%ardin% accessibilit# and dimensional
constraints for connections made to them
Shapes with special desi%n considerations, such as slenderness in
compression or noncompactness in fle.ure, ha"e been indicated
throu%hout the member selection tables with footnotes
!or7able flat dimensions of +SS members ha"e been tabulated
$esi%n properties for pipe are now tabulated usin% the same wall
thic7ness reduction factor used for +SS
An o"er"iew of pro"isions and a simplified method ha"e been included
for second8order anal#sis and stabilit# re:uirements
;ew information has been added on corrosion protection and
compatibilit# of dissimilar metals
Charts ha"e been added for shear stren%th of plate %irders
&ower8bound stren%ths for eccentricall# loaded sin%le an%les ha"e
been tabulated
Tables ha"e been added for the critical buc7lin% stress of compression
members
Tables for members subjected to combined a.ial load and bendin%
ha"e been e.panded and impro"ed
A table has been pro"ided for calculatin% the stren%th of concentricall#
loaded weld %roups
A direct calculation method has been added for calculatin% the
buc7lin% stren%th of double8coped members
/r#in% action pro"isions ha"e been modified so that the tensile
stren%th is used in the calculation rather than the #ield stren%th
2eam bearin% constants ha"e been e.panded to include all cripplin%
and #ieldin% cases
'e"ised desi%n procedures for sin%le8plate shear connections ha"e
been adopted, includin% a new desi%n procedure for e.tended
sin%le8plate shear connections
An updated desi%n procedure for moment end8plate connections has
been adopted based upon #ield8line anal#sis
The uniform force method weld ductilit# factor has chan%ed from 13
to 121
<uidance on washer selection for anchor rods has been e.panded
The desi%n of brac7et plates has been modified so that the plastic
section modulus is used rather than the elastic section modulus
The AISC $esi%n <uide Series and other supportin% references ha"e
been further inte%rated throu%h inde.in% and references to this
material, where appropriate
