Newsletter
No. 20 April 2010
From the President
Dear colleagues and friends,
Why did WVA decide to publish every
two months a WVA Newsletter?
Certainly not to just add another
Newsletter email to your inbox, but
because we feel it is essential that you
are informed about what WVA is
doing and how this can support your
association. We aim for this Newsletter
to be an interactive platform enabling
us to keep you informed and draw your
attention to important news from the
veterinary field.
WVA can do great things but it means
nothing if nobody knows about it. This
Newsletter is one of the ways how we
want to make WVA visible to its
members, to other stakeholders and to
the Society as a whole. The WVA
Excom and the WVA Council will
report regularly about their activities.
However, this Newsletter is not meant
as a one-way street. We are just as
eager to receive your feedback such as
on actions you plan for World
Veterinary Day, information on
important events in your country or
policy changes.

On 22 May 2010 WVA will have an
extra-ordinary Presidents Assembly
(PA) in Paris. Our members and
associate members already received
the invitation and the agenda, the
enclosures will soon follow. "What
does WVA do?", "For who do we do
it?" and "Where does WVA want to
go?" are the principal questions we
want to discuss in this PA. We call
upon all our members to take part in
this discussion as it is important for
you to be involved. When the President
of your association is unable to attend
the PA, we recommend you to send a
substitute who is well informed about
WVA. The aim is for WVA to develop
a robust Strategic Plan and to continue
the process of professionalisation. Our
aim is to strengthen the WVA as a
highly respected organisation at the
centre of global decision making on all
matters relating to animal health,
welfare and public health.
The 30th World Veterinary Congress
with as key message "Caring for
Animals: healthy communities" will
take place in Cape Town, South Africa
from 10-14 October 2011. The WVA
Excom has according the WVC rules,
inspected the location and attended the
official launch. The organising
Committee showed us a beautiful
venue and facilities of which you can
read further in our Newsletter in the
report written by our Executive
Secretary Jan Vaarten. I dearly invite
all veterinarians from all over the
World to come to WVC in Cape Town,
to enjoy both the varied, stimulating,
multi-session scientific and
professional programme, and the
beauty of South Africa.
April is also the month in which we
celebrate World Veterinary Day. The
theme for our celebration this year is
"One World, One Health: more
cooperation between veterinarians and
physicians". We encourage all
organisations to celebrate World
Veterinary Day in their country via
public events organised with support of
the media, open days, competitions or
any event that creates attention. If you
plan an event, do not forget to apply
for the WVA-OIE World Veterinary
Day award which will award $1000 to
recognize the best event.
Last but not least, I am proud to
announce several new WVA policy
and position papers. A new policy on
Veterinary Medicines supplemented
with a position regarding the prudent
and responsible use of Antimicrobials
will be finalised in May, just as a new
policy on Veterinary Education
supplemented by a position on Global
Day-One Competencies.
Although WVA business is important
human resource is even more
important and therefore I would like to
wish our past-president Leon Russell
good health recovery.

The main purpose of the meetings is to
present and discuss the ideas the
EXCOM developed with regard to the
WVA strategic objectives and its
internal organisation. Overarching
goals the EXCOM wishes to achieve
are raising WVAs public profile and
promoting the associations level of
activity. The EXCOM believes that
WVA can only remain a meaningful

Launch event for the 30
th
World Veterinary Congress, Cape Town
The 30
th
World Veterinary Congress,
which will be held from 10
th
to 14
th
October 2011 in Cape Town was
officially launched on 3
rd
March. The
South Africa Veterinary Association
(SAVA), that will host the Congress,
and the organizing Committee
Savetcon, invited stakeholders and
potential sponsors at the Cape Town
International Convention Centre.
WVA president Tjeerd Jorna, Vice
Presidents Duane Landals and Faouzi
Kechrid, attended the event. Touring
through the facilities, they were much
impressed by the bright and spacious
auditorium and lecture rooms. The
welcome speech by SAVA president
Anthea Fleming together with
stimulating sounds of a typical Cape
Town Minstrels band created a great
atmosphere. The participation of 5
months old zebra Kevin provided all
participants with a nice flavour of what
South Africa has to offer.
The Convention Centre is located
between the city centre and the famous
Waterfront area, a perfect starting point
for combining professional
development and pleasure. A unique
opportunity, that may not be missed
and the ideal excuse for every
veterinarian dreaming of visiting
Africa. And by the way: dont forget to
bring your family along, they will love
it. Read more on

Meeting of the WVA Executive Committee
WVA president Tjeerd Jorna, Vice
Presidents Duane Landals and Faouzi
Kechrid, together with Executive
Secretary Jan Vaarten had a full day
meeting to evaluate on-going WVA
activities and to plan for the future.
Many items relating to strategic goals
as well as to organisational and
structural matters were discussed.
At its last meeting in Tokyo the WVA
Council has set up a number of small
working groups on several issues such
as veterinary education, veterinary
services and infrastructure, legislation,
responsible use of antimicrobials, etc.
The chairs of these groups will be
requested to report back on the
initiatives they took and conclusions
they might have drawn.
The EXCOM also developed further
ideas about the Associations internal
organisation. Special attention was
given to the organisation of WVC and
the tri-annual meetings of the
Presidents Assembly and Council. The
ideas will be presented at an
extraordinary Presidents Assembly that
will be held in May in Paris where
WVA members will be asked for their
ideas and opinions.
World Food Prize Laureate Walter Plowright Died February 2010
Walter Plowright is presented the 1999 World Food Prize by
(l-r) Norman Borlaug, Elizabeth Dole, John Ruan Sr., and John
Ruan III
Dr. Plowright, CMG, FRS, received the 1999 World
Food Prize for his development of tissue culture
rinderpest vaccine (TCRV), the key element in the
quest to eliminate rinderpest, or cattle plague, from
farms and herds worldwide.
Rinderpest is a disease of cattle, buffaloes, some
pigs, and numerous species of wild ungulates. The
virus responsible has repeatedly caused tremendous
havoc among livestock from at least the time of the
decline of the Roman Empire, the losses frequently
amounting to millions of animals annually.

Education
New at the Royal Veterinary College, London, UK
The Royal Veterinary College
is launching a new MSc in
Veterinary Education. The
objective is to develop
veterinary educators as
professionals who care about their teaching and
become competent and effective in the delivery of
teaching, training, assessment and research.
The programme is designed for professionals who
are involved in the delivery of veterinary and para-
veterinary education and training at either
undergraduate or postgraduate levels; and practicing
veterinary surgeons and other veterinary para-
professionals involved in work-place training
The MSc is part-time, designed to give an
opportunity to practice and reflect and will be
delivered in a blended learning style with each
module consisting of on-site study days interspersed
with online activities and support.
Further information regarding this programme are

MVM now open to international veterinarians
Massey University in New Zealand has opened its
Master of Veterinary Medicine distance programme
to international applicants for the first time. The first
papers will commence in February 2010.
Until now, the programme has only been available
extramurally to New Zealand citizens working
abroad, but Director of the Master of Veterinary
Medicine, Dr Liz Norman, says that by 2012 the
University hopes to offer 24 papers in four majors:
companion animal, production animal, equine and
business administration.
Candidates can choose to study single courses of
interest or put together a series of courses to gain a
postgraduate qualification. This gives them a post-
nominal MVM or PGDipVCS that can carry
endorsements in the subject area.
The programme also includes optional three-day
contact courses, which are workshops scheduled for
each paper that allow for invaluable face-to-face
contact between students and teachers.
International students will be encouraged to come if
they possibly can because, as Head of Institute
Professor Frazer Allan says, contact courses
provide one-on-one experience with some of the best
and brightest minds in their respective veterinary
fields.
For more information about the MVM visit
www.mvm.massey.ac.nz or email Dr Liz Norman

One World One Health
Zoonotic Diseases Symposium
Following the success of the first Zoonotic Diseases
Symposium held at the Cornell University College
of Veterinary Medicine in February 2009, the
Symposium has become an annual event, and will
continue to address an important, international, and
under-served topic, as well as promote a more
unified approach to health care regardless of the
species of the patient. More information about the
2010 Zoonotic Disease Symposium can be found at
www.vet.cornell.edu/Conferences/zoonotics.
It was the first symposium that specifically
addressed zoonotic diseases and its impact on the
health of all species. Open to students in DVM, MD,
MPH, Nursing and other health care programs, the
symposium not only addressed a much needed
aspect of the One World, One Health initiative, it
also fostered better communications between future
health care workers in hopes of promoting the best
control and prevention of zoonotic diseases.
New research on veterinary suicide rate will help profession
A new paper in the
Veterinary Record
(March 27 2010 pp 388-
397) by D J Bartram and
D S Baldwin, reports that veterinary surgeons are
four times as likely as the general public, and around
twice as likely as other healthcare professionals, to
die by suicide as opposed to other causes, Professor
Bill Reilly, President of the British Veterinary
Association, said:
David Bartrams research in this difficult area is to
be applauded. The more we can understand about the
reasons behind the high suicide rate amongst
veterinary surgeons, the more the BVA and other
bodies can do to support vets in crisis.
Ours is a small profession and many vets will
know a friend or colleague who has taken their own
life. It is essential that this issue is kept in the open
so that those who are struggling know where to turn
for help.
OIE receives a Canadian $2 million contribution from Canada for animal health activities
Canada Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz announced
on a visit to the World Organisation for Animal
Health (OIE) that Canada will contribute Canadian
$2 million to support OIE activities.
The positive impact of animal health policies on
fair and safe trade but also on poverty reduction and
public health is in itself ample justification for
financing and maintaining animal health strategies
and specific programmes worldwide, Dr Bernard
Vallat, OIE Director General said. Canada has
always been supportive of OIEs actions but I would
like to stress my personal thanks to the Government
of Canada for confirming it again today through this
additional contribution, he added.
Canada supports fair and safe international trade
and we are in Paris to reaffirm our commitment to
maximize global trade opportunities using science
based standards adopted by all OIE Members, said
Minister Ritz. "Our Government is pleased to make
this additional contribution to support the vital work
of the OIE as part of our continued efforts to
promote fair international trade for Canadian animals
and animal products and for producers worldwide,"
Minister Ritz said.
Dr Vallat, Mr. Ritz and Dr. Brian Evans, Canadas
Delegate to the OIE, discussed the importance of
science-based standards for the safe international
movement of animals and their products and the role
the OIE plays in the context of global trade, public
heath and poverty alleviation.

Cosmetic Surgery Client Education Poster
CVMA, in collaboration with Atlantic Veterinary
College's Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre,
has provided veterinarians with a copy of the poster
Every Dog Should Have a Tail to Tell and the Ears
to Hear One!. A copy of this poster has been
mailed to all small and mixed animal practices.
The poster was developed by the CVMA Animal
Welfare Committee to help veterinarians educate
clients and prospective dog owners about painful and
unnecessary ear cropping and tail docking cosmetic
surgery. The poster is underpinned by the CVMA
Position Statement on Cosmetic Surgery. We hope
you'll join the CVMA in bringing awareness to this
important issue.
Dog Travel Safe! Poster
The CVMA is opposed to the unsecured
transportation of dogs in open vehicles such as pick-
up or flatbed trucks. Council approved the printing
of the Dog Travel Safe! poster and of making it
available and to all CVMA members by insertion in
The CVJ.

who have both been fundamental in developing the
highly successful American Veterinary Medical
Association VLE Program.
Provincial VMAs have been invited to select two
veterinarians who have graduated within the last 10
years to attend this dynamic workshop.
CVR and Haiti's Agriculture Minister Discuss
Animal Health Infrastructure Recovery
Representatives from the CVMA's Canadian
Veterinary Reserve and Canada's Veterinarians
without Borders met on February 19
th
, in Ottawa
with Haiti's Minister of Agriculture, Joanas Gue, to
learn how the recent earthquake has impacted Haiti's
animal health infrastructure and discuss what
Canadian veterinarians can do to assist with both
short and long term recovery and development
needs.
In response to the earthquake in Haiti, the CVMAs
Canadian Veterinary Reserve (CVR) called up
French-speaking reservists of the CVR. Thirty-nine
francophone reservists volunteered for standby duty.
The CVR offered its services to Public Safety
Canada and to international responders. In the end,
the Reserve was not required to be deployed. The
CVR currently consists of 431 Reservists, with 203
reservists having completed FAD training.
The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on
Agriculture (IICA) approached the CVMAs CVR to
assist in recovery-reconstruction of veterinary and
animal health infrastructure in Haiti. The CVMA
contacted Veterinarians without Borders and,
together, met with Haitis Minister of Agriculture to
discuss the IICA project.

The CVMA Council met Mr. Dykstra who co-chairs
an inter-parliamentary committee that has a
particular interest in animal welfare and animal
cruelty, to provide him with an overview of the
CVMA and its animal welfare involvement and to
learn more about this inter-parliamentary committee.
Both parties agreed to maintain regular contacts and
collaborate, where appropriate.
CVMA Animal Welfare Committee
Dr. Pat Turner, who is also an Associate Member
(IACLAM) of the World Veterinary Association, is
the new Chair of the CVMAs Animal Welfare
Committee. Dr. Terry Whiting, past-Chair, will
continue serving the Committee as a member.
Universal Declaration on the Ethical Harvest of
Seals
The CVMA received an invitation from Senator
Cline Hervieux-Payette asking for a CVMA
endorsement of the UDEHS. The CVMA did not
endorse this document at this time, but was
pleased to note that it is compatible with the CVMA
Position on seal hunting in Atlantic Canada and
supports the use of the CVMA Position Statement as
a reference document in the UDEHS.
Position Statement on Vicious Dogs
The CVMA Council has approved the following
revised position statement:
"The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association
(CVMA) supports vicious dog legislation provided
that it does not refer to specific breeds. This
legislation should be directed at fostering the safety
and protection of the general public from dogs
classified as vicious. The CVMA encourages and
supports responsible pet ownership."
CVMA Animal Health Technology / Veterinary
Technician Program Accreditation
Council approved the accreditation of the following
programs: Northern College Veterinary Technician
Program; Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science

sponsored by Intervet-Schering-Plough Animal
Health, revealed that they would appreciate
receiving more mentoring support and more training
in communications and financial management.
Council received a draft outline of a mentorship
program which will be pursued further.
SCVMA Lectures
Student veterinarians have expressed a particular
interest in receiving additional training to prepare
them for managing cases of animal abuse. With a
lecture tour, the CVMA will help student
veterinarians learn how to recognize signs of animal
abuse and the legal aspects associated with handling
such cases. This new program will be sponsored by
Rolf C. Hagen.
CVMA on Facebook
The CVMA serves its members by means of its two
Journals, the Web, the new monthly published e-
newsletter Online, e- and fax-blasts, CVMA-
ACMV Discussions(Listserv) and Twitter. In the
meantime, the CVMA has also established its
presence on Facebook, the worlds most widely used
social network.
CVMA Emerging Leaders Program
The CVMA will deliver this program for the first
time on Wednesday, July 7, in Calgary, to two
emerging leaders per province (leaders who have
graduated within the last 10 years) plus the Students
of the CVMA Board (SCVMA). This program,
intended to be repeated in the following years, is
being chaired by Dr. Melodie Chan and is made
possible by the generous sponsorship of Hills Pet
Nutrition Canada.
