MEANING OF OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE

Open source software (OSS) refers to software that is developed, tested, or improved through
public collaboration and distributed with the idea that they must be shared with others, ensuring
an open future collaboration. Generally, the softwares source code and other rights are provided
under the Open Source Definition or it is located under a public domain. Hence, this authorizes
the users to use, change and improve the software and allows them to redistribute the software in
it modified or unmodified forms.

MEANING OF HARDWARE
Computer hardware is the collection of physical elements that constitutes a computer system.
Computer hardware refers to the physical parts or components of a computer such as
the monitor, mouse, keyboard, computer data storage, hard drive disk (HDD), system unit
(graphic cards, sound cards, memory, motherboard and chips). All of which are physical objects
that can be touched. Since a computers primary language is binary, devices are necessary to
convert our input into that language. The binary code coming out of the computer must also be
translated into something usable for the operator.

MEANING OF SOFTWARE

Computer software includes all computer programs regardless of their architecture; for
example, executable files, libraries and scripts are computer software. Yet, it shares their mutual
properties: software consists of clearly defined instructions that upon execution, instructs
hardware to perform the tasks for which it is designed. Software is stored incomputer
memory and cannot be touched, just as a 3D model shown in an illustration cannot be touched. At
the lowest level, executable code consists of machine language instructions specific to an
individual processor typically a central processing unit (CPU). A machine language consists of
groups of binary values signifying processor instructions that change the state of the computer
from its preceding state. High-level languages are compiled or interpreted into machine language
object code.

Software is divided into two categories:
1. System software: Consists of the operating system, the firmware, the BIOS, and various utilities
software.
2. Application software: Consists of software that does real work for the user.

2.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM

2.1 MEANING OF OPEN SOURCE OS

Open Source Operating System is a set of programs that schedule tasks, allocates storage and
presents a default interface to the user between application that performs a particular function for
the user that provide for use, modification and redistribution. An operating system is a set of
programs containing instructions that coordinate all the activities among computer hardware
resources. Most operating system perform similar function that includes starting a computer,
provide a user interface, managing program, managing memory and configuring devices. Some
operating system also allows user to control a network and administer security. Open Source
Operating System is any operating system that is free to use and which provides the original code
where the source code is available (under a copyright license) to the public, which enables them
to use, modify enhance the operating system, and redistribute the modified (or unmodified) form
of the operating system. The advance user can modify the code of operating system to make it
works better for them in starting the computer or a likely user interface.

2.2 EXAMPLE OF OPEN SOURCE OS

2.2.1 NetBSD
NetBSD is an open-source Unix-like operating system descended from Berkeley Software
Distribution (BSD), a Unix derivative developed at the University of California, Berkeley. It was
the second open-source BSD descendant to be formally released after it was forked from
the 386BSD branch of the BSD source-code repositority. It continues to be actively developed
and is available for many platforms from large-scale server systems to powerful desktop systems
to handheld devices, and is often used inembedded systems.A major focus of the NetBSD project
is building a clean, well architected and portable operating system adhering to strict open-source
code transparency which can be traced back to its inception.

2.2.2 HAIKU

Haiku is an open-source operating system currently in development designed from the ground up
for desktop computing. Inspired by the BeOS, Haiku aims to provide users of all levels with a
personal computing experience that is simple yet powerful, and free of any unnecessary
complexities. Haiku is developed mostly by volunteers around the world in their spare time.

3.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE APPLICATOIN SOFTWARE

3.1 MEANING OF OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE
Source Application Software includes database programs, word processors, and spreadsheets and
others. It is free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it
in modified or unmodified forms. Application software is a defined subclass of computer
software that employs the capabilities of a computer directly to a task that the user wishes to
perform. This should be contrasted withsystem software which is involved in integrating a
computer's various capabilities, but typicallydoes not directly apply them in the performance of
tasks that benefit the user. The termapplication refers to both the application software and its
implementation.

5.0 PERVASIVE COMPUTING

5.1MEANING OF PERVASIVE COMPUTING
The idea that technology is moving beyond the personal computer to everyday devices with
embedded technology and connectivity as computing devices become progressively smaller and
more powerful. Also called ubiquitous computing, pervasive computing devices is the result of
computer technology advancing at exponential speeds. A trend toward all man made and some
natural products having hardware and software. Pervasive computing goes beyond the realm of
personal computers it is the idea that almost any device, form clothing to tolls to appliances to
cars to homes to the human body to your coffee mug, can be imbedded with chips to connect the
device to an infinite network of other devices. The goal of pervasive computing, which combines
current network technologies with wireless computing, voice recognition, Internet capability and
artificial intelligence, is to create an environment where the connectivity of devices is embedded
in such a way that the connectivity is unobtrusive and always available.

5.2 EXAMPLE OF PERVASIVE COMPUTING

Smart TV
(Samsung Smart TV) Smart TV, which is also sometimes referred to as "Connected TV" or
"Hybrid TV", is the phrase used to describe the current trend of integration of the internet. These
new devices most often also have a much higher focus on online interactive media, Internet
TV, over-the-top content, as well as on-demand streaming media, and less focus on
traditional broadcast media like previous generations of television sets and set-top boxes always
have had. The technology that enables Smart TVs is not only incorporated into television sets,
but also devices such as set-top boxes, Blu-ray players, game consoles, and other companion
devices. These devices allow viewers to search and find videos, movies, photos and other content
on the web, on a local cable TV channel, on a satellite TV channel, or stored on a local hard
drive.

GPS
The Global

Positioning

System (GPS)

is

space-based global

navigation

satellite

system (GNSS) that provides location and time information in all weather, anywhere on or near
the Earth, where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. It is
maintained by the United States government and is freely accessible by anyone with a GPS
receiver. The GPS project was developed in 1973 to overcome the limitations of previous
navigation systems, integrating ideas from several predecessors, including a number of classified
engineering design studies from the 1960s. GPS was created and realized by the U.S.
Department of Defense (USDOD) and was originally run with 24 satellites. It became fully
operational in 1994.

6.0 CONCLUSION
Open Source can be used by anyone and because it has no copyright claims, so users are free to
use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms.
Pervasive Computing is to make our lives easier because we can interact with computers.
Besides that, we can easily give the computer commands and the computer will grant your wish.
