Spring time
celebrations

[email protected]

During the spring workshop town council had

directed administration to create a terms of reference for a seniors advisory committee. At the May
21 regular council meeting Municipal Clerk Jennifer
Sawatzky brought forward those terms for councils
input and approval.
Councillor Denise Peterson had a minor issue
with the statement provides advice to town council through the FCSS regarding activates that affect
seniors.
Does this mean that the seniors themselves would
not bring a voice to the table, that the voice that
would come to council would be the voice of FCSS?
said Peterson.
Sawatzky stated that she believed the intent would
be that the committee would be run under Strathmore FCSS who would then bring any concerns and
comments to council.
Peterson said one of the things that she has learned
from talking to the seniors in the community was
that they wanted their voice heard and heard specifically. She had no concerns with everything else
in the draft, but would like to see the term through
FCSS deleted, which would mean that it could be
members of the committee coming to speak to council, or if the committee so chooses they could have
FCSS speak on their behalf.
Peterson said seniors in the community are excited
and see lots of potential coming from this. There can
be partnerships with Marigold Library System, personal care and family care networks, and additional
support from various other groups.
They want to be an authoritative voice with regards to issues of low income seniors, bring to the
forefront issues on elder abuse, they want to look
at attracting older workers into the local work force
and to create strategies to help those in the work
force be able to retain positions and to focus on issues of senior isolation, particularly for seniors in
rural environments, said Peterson.
She said the seniors she spoke to were firm in
their belief that many county residents would move
to Strathmore to retire or to access assisted living
accommodations, and for these reasons they feel it
is important to unite their voices in the interest of
the common good for Strathmore. They are confident
that if the county also strikes a seniors council that
the two will work together in the future.
The terms of reference were approved, minus the
term through FCSS, and the committee is officially
established and looking for members.

On May 30 Wheatland Elementary School held its annual Western Day. The
staff and students were encouraged to dress in their best western duds,
and were treated to a pancake breakfast. Parent council at the school purchased the pancake mix and juice boxes and the meal was served by Calgary Stampede representatives. There were also horses, a mini-pony and
sheep for the kids to pet.

Strathmore RCMP are currently investigating

the theft of two side by sides and a utility
trailer from Strathmore Motor Sports.
Between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and Midnight
on May 24th an unknown Caucasian male cut
the pad lock off the gate to gain entry to the
yard stealing two 2011 Polaris Ranger RZR
800 side by sides. The male proceeded to
steal a Karavan Trailer from the yard to load
the Polaris Rangers. Both Side by sides were
at Strathmore Motor Sports to be fixed and
therefore the male may be looking for parts to
fix them. Attached photos are not the exact
side by sides. If you have any information
that could assist in solving this investigation
please contact the Strathmore RCMP.

Canada got low scores at the Global Summit on
the Physical Activity of Children, which showed
Canadian kids were not getting enough outdoor
activity and only 37 per cent of parents played
in active games with their kids. There were lots
of scheduled activities and facilities available, but
unscheduled time lacked an active outdoor play
component.
With the weather improving, parents can improve those statistics and increase their childrens
health and wellbeing by taking them out to enjoy
the local parks.
The Town of Strathmore has 28 parks within its
town limits, offering open spaces, places to walk
the dog, a skate park, wetlands, playgrounds, picnic and wedding areas, ball diamonds and soccer
pitches and even a spray park for the toddlers.
The map of parks and the walking/bike paths can
be found www.strathmore.ca.
The playgrounds are often the childrens first
choice for play.
For me, it is a way for them to run around and
interact with other families instead of being indoors, said Kelly Mullen, a father who was playing with his child at Kinsmen Park. The kids can
burn off a little energy and socialize a little bit. We
try to hit a different park each time.
We have our favorites, said Tom Robinson. We
come here (Kinsmen Park) a lot.
Robinson has one son and is imminently expecting his second child. He said he would like
to see some improvements to some of the parks,
like more trees around Gray Park, separating the
traffic flow from the park.
He said increased security in Kinsmen Park
would also be good.
In an age where parents must be vigilant of
strangers around their kids, Robinson said he
found it kind of creepy when people sit in their
cars alone in the parking lot. He wonders if local
police shouldnt also be paying more attention to
teen activity in the lot.

Kelly Mullen gives the whirligig a spin in Kinsmen Park on

May 30. His daughter and three other boys enjoy the energy
an adult brings to playground antics. Strathmore has 28 parks
that offer a variety of outdoor fun to local families.

Robinson is not alone in concerns about childrens safety outdoors.

The National Childrens Bureau did a study of
1,000 parents, half of which feared letting their
children outdoors to play because of stranger
dangers, traffic concerns or play yard safety hazards. However, child development experts are advocating to parents that some of their fears may
be unfounded. With proper guidance, children can
learn to be aware of their surroundings while they
play and put in motion the safety factors to ensure
they will be safe.
They suggest that parents participation in outdoor play with their children allows the child to
and learn how to deal with challenges they face
through mentoring. Those experiences build childrens confidence when faced with similar choices
they must make on their own. One group of parents in Calgary have formed a parent pool, where
they take turns walking several children on their
block to school during the week.
Check out www.greenheartsinc.org, and click
on A Parents Guide to Nature Play for some other
good tips for managing childrens play outdoors.

Let the fun begin

The Langdon Community Association and
community members held the grand opening of their new playground on June 1 at the
Field House. The celebration included bouncy
houses, a barbeque and of course, the new
playground equipment which was a big hit
with the kids and parents alike. After a few
words from MLA Bruce McAllister the official
opening was marked by a slide through to

Capsule Comments
Hows your sunscreen supply? The shelf life for
standard sunscreen products is three years but if it
has been exposed to high heat during last summer,
it may not be up to potency. Its good to replace it
with some fresh product. Choose one with an SPF
of at least 30 and labelled broad spectrum to protect
against both UVA and UVB rays.
One of the best anti-aging things you can do for
your skin is not to overexpose it to sunlight especially
during the middle hours of hot summer days. Use
sunscreen lotion and clothing to protect your skin
from the aging effects of sunlight.
Those with lung conditions like asthma often use
inhalers to help open the airways. These devices
work well but only if the medication gets deep
into the lungs. So proper technique is important.
Metered-dose inhalers must be shaken well then
breathed in slowly and deeply when the inhaler is
pressed. By breathing in continuously minimizes the
amount of medication that hits the back of the throat.
The other type of inhaler is the dry powder inhaler
where the force of the patients breath moves the
medication into the lungs. This type of inhaler
comes as single-use or multi-use types. Remember,
proper use of these inhalers is important otherwise
the medication will not work efficiently.
If you feel you arent getting the most from your
inhalers, see our pharmacists for advice. Wed be
happy to check your technique and help you use
them correctly.

It has been a wonderful year of learning and growing here at the Strathmore

Costumes and music are highlights of

Rosebuds ridiculous, touching play
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Chickens, Rosebud Theatres summer musical, opened May
30. This is Chickens third time at Rosebud Theatre, and judging by the nearly-sold-out crowd, audience guffaws throughout, and the demand for an encore, Rosebud fans are glad
to have it back.
Pal (Andrew Cooper) and his wife Liza (Alixandra Cowman) are Alberta farmers in the 1980s, about to lose their
five-generation farm. But Pal has a great idea hell raise
chickens, very special chickens. Pals chickens are so special,
in fact, that he becomes the laughingstock of the community.
Now hes losing his farm, his hope ... and his wife.
This is Andrew Coopers first time with Rosebud Theatre
since he graduated from Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA) 10
years ago, though you might have seen him shine as Benedick
in Much Ado About Nothing in the Passion Play amphitheatre last summer. Cooper displays remarkable depth and diversity within this single role despairing farmer, confused
husband, imaginative entrepreneur, wooing lover. Alixandra
Cowman, fourth-year RSA student, has appeared in several
Rosebud shows, but shes come into her own in Chickens.
She tugs heart strings as the drudging farmwife, afraid to
lose the farm, terrified her husband is already gone.
The other four actors are chickens, with ridiculous neck
and feet movements that are reminiscent of true chicken behaviour. Tim Hildebrand stands out as Alphonso, the cocky
adolescent rooster who swaggers onto the farm to show shy
His Nibs ( Joel Stephanson) how its really done with the
hens (Lauren de Graaf and Brynn Linsey). The new-father
glow Alphonso displays when his hen lays a record-sized
egg is, all by itself, worth the price of the ticket.
Terrilee Shannon, costume designer, put the chickens, not
in large feathered costumes, but in street clothes. Shannon
told me that, after scouring the dialogue for details like red
legs and shaved head, she researched the chickens actual
breeds and coloring, then looked for modern fashions that
replicate the appearance of those breeds. The images shes
created are remarkable.

County conditions
placed on Motorsport
development
SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

The Town of Strathmore has approved the development
of a multi-use recreational motorsport track on the towns
southeast border.
The property is adjacent to Wheatland County land, and
Strathmore Town Council has stipulated that the conditions
and concerns of Wheatland County must be addressed by
the developer.
On May 20, Wheatland Council outlined their concerns
which were documented and sent in a letter to the Town of
Strathmore.
The following concerns were included:
The condition of the county road on the property be
upgraded
The town and the county have a working access agreement signed with the developer
A traffic assessment be done, with applications to Hwy
1 use and access
As a wetland area is situated on one corner of the land,
a bio-physical impact wetland study should be provided.
There were concerns fluids from the track would empty into
the wetland.
Storm water improvements may be needed, so a storm
water drainage plan must be provided
A berm with security fencing should be constructed to
reduce sound, as well as tree plantings to improve visual effects of the berm.
Councillors had concerns that adjacent county landowners
were not adequately consulted and Wheatland council notification was on short notice for reply.
We should have had due notification done in a timely
manner, to address concerns of land owners as well as residents. We need to address this, so it doesnt continue in the
future, said Councillor Brenda Knight.
One landowner, who runs cattle next to the proposed development, had voiced concerns to his councillor over the
potential effect the noise levels will have on his cattle herd.
Studies have shown noise or startling can cause injuries and
birthing problems in cattle.

The music of Chickens is also a

character of its own. Playwright Lucia
Frangione, and composers Lewis Frere,
Royal Sproule, Mark Lewandowski and
Jason Bertsch use music in a dozen
overt and subtle ways. The music tells
the story, it carries the story and it is
the story.
I was watching for how the storyline
would end: would Pal and Liza save
their farm and their marriage? My
companion didnt pay much attention
to the plot, she admitted; she just enjoyed the chickens antics.
Whether you track the storyline or
just enjoy the hilarity, Chickens will
give you a fun summer outing. Matinee
and evening shows include a meal, and
run until Aug. 30. Go to www.rosebudtheatre.com or 1-800-267-7553 for tickets.

No-cost accounts
for financially
vulnerable Canadians
FROM THE OFFICE OF KEVIN SORENSON

The Honourable Kevin Sorenson Minister of State (Finance) and Member of Parliament for Crowfoot welcomed
agreement from Canadas eight major banks to offer nocost accounts with the same features as low-cost accounts
to a wider range of consumers.
To protect consumers and save Canadians money, the
Harper Government today announced voluntary commitments from Canadas eight largest banks to enhance lowcost bank accounts and offer no-cost accounts for financially vulnerable Canadians including youth, students, and
seniors, said Minister Sorenson. I commend the banks for
committing to bring the voluntary guidelines into force by
January 15, 2015.
The new guidelines for Low-Cost and No-Cost Accounts
provide:
these services for youth, students, seniors qualifying
for the Guaranteed Income Supplement, and Registered
Disability Savings Plan beneficiaries
a minimum of 12 debit transactions and 2 in-branch
transactions per month;
cheque-writing privileges;
no extra charge for deposits, debit cards, pre-authorized payment forms and monthly printed statements;
cheque image return or online cheque image viewing,
and;
low-cost accounts that will cost $4.00 per month.
Canadians work hard for their money and deserve to
keep more of their hard-earned money. Our Conservative
Government is delivering on the commitments made in
the 2013 Speech from the Throne and Economic Action
Plan 2014 to expand no-cost basic banking services and to
end unfair administrative fees, said Minister Sorenson. I
encourage qualified constituents to consider these services. Banks will prominently display information about the
availability of low-cost and no-cost accounts in-branch and
online soon. More than 7 million people are forecast to
participate in this initiative, concluded Minister Sorenson.

Strathmores cool, free App!

PARKER PETRUSKA
Strathmore Assembly of Youth

The weather is getting warmer out there and
knowing Alberta, there is no telling when it will
turn, so its time to take advantage. One of the
many ways of making the most of it is to discover
and trek Strathmores paths, and the Smore Paths
app will help you do just that.
My name is Parker Petruska. I am a Grade 12
student at Strathmore High School and I am a
member of SAY (Strathmore Assembly of Youth),
the creators of the Smore Paths app.
SAY is the voice of youth in Strathmore. We work
closely with town council to identify issues related
to youth and try to provide creative solutions for
them.
SAY developed this app to get people off the
couch, become more active, and to help people
discover Strathmores paths. Along with numerous generous donations, a lot of cotton candy was

painstakingly made to fundraise the cost of this

app. This means the app is free to download!
Some of the excellent features in the app are the
tracking of distance, speed and time spent and that
it is specific to our community, which is not found
on any other apps. This is also great for newcomers to Strathmore. I personally mapped out the
Sagewood Circle path. Inclusion of wheelchairaccessible paths was essential for the app, because
its just as important for people such as me (Im
confined to a wheelchair) to enjoy the outdoors,
and, quite frankly, it just makes sense.
Over the next few weeks I will be interviewing
users of the app, sharing their thoughts and how
they use this great app, and getting the word out
that Smore Paths is free to download on Apple
devices. FYI: remember to close the app when finished because it drains battery life. Be sure to look
out for Part 2!

The Joyland Blues

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
So anyway, I had e-mailed my staff last week to see
if anyone wanted to see the latest X-Men movie at
our local theatre. I had a few positive responses,
but it was pretty quiet. But, Dear Diary no
one but me showed, and I sat like a loser in the
theatre.
I must admit, if youre going to be the oddball
out at a movie, the Joyland is a great place. There
have been some renovations done, and the previous long time owners put in a brand new digital
sound/video system! That way, while I was wallowing in my abandondness (is that even a word), I
could enjoy the movie.
The theatre has had some interesting changes, the
concession area is a bit different, theres new paint
throughout, and they even brought in a sound system expert to rearrange the speakers. Last week,
I was impressed by the sounds of explosions,
screams, and general carnage coming from everywhere in the theatre! And, for $10 a ticket for
a brand new release, its a great bargain. I had a
chance to speak to one of the new owners, and we
can look forward to some changes to this 90-yearold theatre! They have a very cool new marquee
sign to be installed before the end of summer, and
they plan on breaking off the white stucco, to expose the original brick work! So, if you want to see
a brand new movie, and save a lot of your dough,
hit the Joyland.
Okay enough, about the theatre we were talking about how I was abandoned by my staff at the
movie. I actually dont mind watching movies by
myself, and Ive heard from some of you, who do
the same thing. The problem last week was that it
was in Strathmore. In Calgary, I could have been an
anonymous loser. You know, one of those poor,
mysterious guys, who everyone wonders about, but
will never see again. My daughter went to Magic
Mike in Calgary, and she said there was one lone
man in the theatre watching a movie about ripped
male strippers. I imagine I stuck out here, as much
as that guy!

I have been asked to re-tell the movie theatre story about my brother. Years ago, we were in Banff
watching the latest blockbuster Waterloo.
The theatre was packed and Gary made the mistake of leaving his seat for a bathroom break. The
poor guy came back, having lost his bearings in the
dark. He whispered out to us ... his voice sounding
slightly panicked. Of course, we never helped him
at all. No, we stayed upright in our seats looking
straight ahead, to blend in with the masses. Gary
went up one outside aisle, then back to the other,
and back. People shushed him as he plaintively
called our names. I have to admit, I shushed him,
too! I had to join in, or the joke may have failed!
Anyway, after a while, we let him off the hook. I believe he called me some unkind names. After that,
anytime he said he was going for popcorn, Id ask,
really, are you sure you want to do that?
Hed sit back down grudgingly, and again use unpleasant language on his younger brother.
Its bad enough that I had to sit by myself, but there
dead ahead of me, were my nemesis Jr. high
kids! Oh no, not just Jr. high kids, but two Jr. high
couples! Between the bouncing on seats, talking,
and texting, they decided it was the spot to make
out! It was horrible. Oh yeah, it was fine in darkened, loud scenes, but when the screen erupted
into a bright explosion, or day scene, I saw other special effects! Thank God, the chubby blond
guy got hungry a lot, because the popcorn saved
the whole crowd from a horrible sight! I actually
wanted to yell out how dumb they were. I mean, if
youre going to make out, why sit in the very front
row, with the entire audience behind you? I mean,
unless theyre planning on careers in the adult film
industry, why put yourself on display like that?! I
gave them my best smirk as they walked by after
the movie, but it went over their heads.
So after the movie, I decided Id stop pouting. I
mean Wolverine wouldnt sulk, hed go get a beer. I
almost went across the street to the King Eddy, but
looking at my watch, I realized it was 10:20 p.m. on
a school night. Yep, I decided Id better get home
I bet Wolverine would be disgusted with me
guess Ill never be an X-Man!

Chinook Credit Union merges with First Calgary Financial

The new collaboration of First Calgary Financial and the

By joining forces at the corporate level, the two banks will

My dad died two weeks ago.
Not the most uplifting beginning
to Pass the Salt, but about all I
think about these days. After a full,
significant, and good life, my dad
fought a three-year battle with
cancer and ultimately lost.
Besides the fact that this has
been my reality for the last several
weeks, I feel drawn to writing

ways I have seen the power

this season of loss. Ways that I

but that take on new significance
when its your turn to grieve and
mourn.
Here are some of the meaningful
expressions of care and love that
have been given over the last
several weeks: great stories and

and words of encouragement;
financial support to make sure
family members could be present
in my dads last days; a family let
us use their house so we could
be close to my parents; time and
understanding from co-workers
and work; meals; open and free
expressions of prayer; patience

In the busyness of our lives

overlook the very real, painful, and
significant seasons of loss in one
anothers lives, yet it may be in
these times of grief and mourning
that community is forged in new
and more meaningful ways.
I continue to mourn the loss of
my dad. It just felt too soon. He

midst of this loss, the meaningful
expressions of community and

Expressions of care for those left
in the wake of a death are not
simply expressions of politeness

expressions of friendship and love
that reveal hearts of generosity,
hospitality, and compassion. They
are the stuff of true community.
I am thankful for the gift of these

First Calgary Financial has the distinction of being named one of the Top 50 best managed companies in Canada. Those skills will come into play
with a rework to the new corporate structure.
We felt it was time to explore what further benefits we could provide to our members and employees, through learning more about each others
organizations and potentially areas where we can
further collaborate, said Paul Kelly, President and
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of First Calgary Financial.
Chinook Credit Union President and CEO Tom
Mossing wanted customers to know that the corporate office may change, but customers will see
little change in their branch services, with service delivered in the same manner that they have
grown to expect.
Both our credit unions share a rich 75-year history in Southern Alberta, said Tom Mossing.
First Calgary Financials history is shared in their
corporate write-up when they tell the story of
their first loan going out in 1938. It was $50 lent
to a Calgary family, so they could buy a washing
machine. Chinook Credit Union began in Brooks,
with 33 people giving $1 each to start Brooks Savings and Credit Union. It was 1941 and finances
were tight, but the bank flourished in fat and lean

times, expanding to several branches.

Both companies have active community programs and that investment will also continue.
Mossing said the credit unions relationship with
rural communities and agricultural support will
remain a focus for the company.
Mossing said customers can look forward to
some new services and programs. He expects they
will be happy to gain access to banking facilities
in Calgary, which will add banking convenience.
On the downside, he anticipates there may be
some employee shifting at upper management
levels, but he said every effort would be taken to
ensure uprooted employees are moved into other
available positions.
He said the move was not due to any financial
difficulties either bank was experiencing, but considers the merger beneficial to both banks long
term goals, with the consolidated membership
giving both companies the leveraging ability their
combined $4 billion in assets will lend. The collaboration will boost the membership to more
than 90,000 and increase branches to 27, located
in 14 communities across Alberta.
The marriage will be completed Nov. 1, pending approvals of the membership and regulatory
bodies.

school. We Are Silent
t-shirts were printed and
students bought them for
$5 each and took a vow of
silence for the school day.
About 70 students raised
almost $450. The idea
behind the campaign was
to raise awareness of the
startling amount of children around the world who do not have access to education, including over 31 million girls. The money
raised at HCC during this event is going toward building a school in Cameroon, Africa for some of these unfortunate children,
so they too can enjoy the gift of learning!

Plus 55 plans ahead for games

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

The Plus 55 Summer Games organizers are beginning their
push to raise awareness, garner volunteers and secure funding to make the 2015 games a great success.
This is our time to shine. We need enthusiasm and we
hope everyone spreads the word. Our goal is to make everyone aware of why we are here, said the Alberta Plus 55
Summer Games Board member Donalda Ledene.
The games are being held in Strathmore, July 16-19, 2015.
The organizers have formed a 16-member board, including
five members from Wheatland County, who are helping to
form partnerships to get the games off the ground. Alberta
Sport, the Town of Strathmore and the Alberta government
are currently on board.
They are looking for 800 volunteers, in all types of service
areas. Those who wish to volunteer can call Bruce Bishop at
403-934-6630 for more information.
There are some very interesting competitive activities lined

Organizers are preparing some activities in

June, to give people a chance to participate and
test drive which event might be appropriate for
them. For more information, call Joss Binns at
403-934-2458.
The plus-55 age category is the largest growing
demographic in the province, and the games hope
to showcase mind and body fitness, through the
role models participating in the games. The oldest
athlete competing in games is 100 years old, so
age is not a factor to participate.
Information playoff posters will be distributed throughout the province approximately four
months prior to the games. Playoffs will be held
one to three months prior to the games.
Travel and accommodations worries shouldnt
deter potential entrants, as zone winners are given
accommodation, meals, transportation to and from
the games and transportation during the event.
Zone Identification (i.e. t-shirt) and sport bag, inclusion in ceremonies and other social events and
provision of sport facilities and necessary sport
equipment for competition will be provided in the
host community. More info about the specific activities is posted on the Alberta 55 Plus Summer
Games www.albertagames.com website. The 2015
Strathmore games site is under development and
will have more information soon.

up for 2015. An assortment of sports will be featured: bocce, cycling, floor curling, floor shuffleboard, golf, horseshoes, slo-pitch, swimming and
tennis. A new event added is pickle ball. There are
also non-sport competitions: arts, bridge, creative
writing, and cribbage. A geocaching event will
also be laid out. Ledene said that there are eight
zones in Alberta, and those interested should be
considering participating now to reach finals for
the games, as playoff processes lead to the athletes competing in the games.
Those interested can go to the Alberta 55 Plus
Games website, www.alberta55plus.ca and fill out
a one-year membership, which costs $30. Then
you can see all the events and the corresponding
information for participation.
Strathmore and Wheatland are in Zone 2, which
covers a larger area than Wheatland County, so it
is a chance to meet a new group of people as well.
I think it will be a great opportunity to showcase the town and the surrounding communities,
said Ledene.
There will be an influx of approximately 2,000
people - athletes, spouses and friends - enjoying
Strathmores hospitality. Past games have generated over a million tourism dollars for hosting areas,
so there are benefits for municipal governments
and businesses to get involved.

Stormwater options discussed

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

At the May 21 town council meeting David Seeliger and Colin McNab from
MPE Engineering brought
forward details and suggestions for stormwater management.
The Engineering Assessment of Preferred Stormwater Management Options report was created for
municipalities involved in
the Co-operative Stormwater Management Initiatives
(CSMI).
CSMI was formed to assist
municipalities and the Western Irrigation District (WID)
in finding solutions to the
stormwater issues that affect
each sector and municipality in different ways.
There are numerous possible strategies or options that
were drawn from the analysis that have the potential to
reduce the nutrient loading
from the stormwater runoff,
but only a few can be effectively implemented.
So looking at the existing
water quality in the canals,
the existing canals are close
to exceeding water quality
limits by the WID stormwater guidelines that were developed a number of years
ago, said Seeliger.
Therefore to let stormwater into the canals like may
have been done more traditionally, if we do permit that
as an alternative, we really
need to improve stormwater
to a high level to not to continue to degrade the water
quality.
The preferred stormwater management solution is
an out-of-canal alternative,

where all urban stormwater

is diverted away from the irrigation system, treated as
necessary, and eventually
released into a natural water
course. By going with this
method there is reduced
risk to the overall irrigation
infrastructure.
Stormwater runoff generated by rare events, such as
the one-in-100-years flood
situations, should be allowed to go into the irrigation system, providing an
emergency escape route for
the runoff. A strict irrigation
nutrient-loading guideline
would not need to be followed with the out-of-canal
option. Strathmore west and
north study areas should
also be considered for diversion, said Seeliger, which
would allow the stormwater
to flow directly into Serviceberry Creek, and not impact
the already poor water quality within the B canal.
The recommendations include proceeding with the
initial implementation planning phase, which involves
making key decision, confirming next steps, conceptual design and stormwater
guidelines. It also involves
having future land development incorporate low impact development practices,
stormwater reuse to reduce
overall volume, and ponds
or wetlands for management of peak flows to meet
the CSMI guidelines.
IN the 2014 irrigation
season it is proposed that
enhanced water quality
monitoring be implemented, continued and further
refined through evaluation
of locations, and timing
samples on a more frequent

Sharons
Doggie Dos

basis. Discussion with the regulators

should also take place, to familiarize
them with the initiative and to review
the regulatory framework.
Council made and approved a motion supporting the findings and recommendations, and authorized the
town to participate in the next step so
of the Co-operative Stormwater Management Initiative Implementation
Planning Phase.

The financial auditors, Young,
Parkyn, McNab LLP, were on Wheatland County councils doorstep May
20, to present the independent 2013
draft of their audited financial reports.
Our responsibility is to audit the financials and provide an opinion, analysis and fair evaluation, said Darren
Adamson, spokesperson for the team.
Overall, all indicators here are very
strong.
Wheatland County assets were more
than their liabilities, but had decreased
slightly over a five year period. The financial assets over liabilities came in
at 3.6 on a scale of four. Anything over
one is rated as acceptable and Adamson said he knew of some counties
who were showing negative indicators. The amount of capital revenues
budgeted came in close to the actual
spending. Adamson did note that salaries and wages were a large expenditure this year, which fits with some
of the added hiring being done by the
county. Utilizing contracted services
was also a large expenditure of funds,
but it was noted they were being utilized for infrastructure projects.
Sustainability indicators measure the
counties spending against the growth

An investment in our

community.
A commitment to you.

in the economy. Wheatland Countys

indicator rose from .73 percent to .82
percent over the last year and Adamson suggested the county may want to
pursue generating some of their own
source income. There was some suggestion that council was showing a
slight dependence on transfers from
other governments for operating revenues, which Adamson said could be a
risk if funding from the other governments was cut.
Overall the county is in a surplus
position and Adamson noted they had
realized some good returns on their investments over the past year.
The audited draft was accepted and
it will be filed with Alberta Municipal Affairs according to the Municipal
Government Act.
WEEDS
Brandi Walls and Marina Meister
were appointed weed inspectors by
Wheatland County this year. They
both have their certifications needed
to fulfill the terms of the Pest and
Weed control contracts. They will be
inspecting and surveying for Fusarium
Granimnearum, Clubroot and grasshoppers. They will also be assisting
Agriculture Service officers as they do
their inspections. There was an outbreak of purple loosestrife sighted on
the east Strathmore boundary and local gardeners are asked to make themselves familiar with prohibited and
noxious weeds. Weed them out from
garden plantings, which helps terminate their spread to wider areas. There
are some good pictures of them on the
county website.
TOO YOUNG TO BE OLD
Wheatland County council discussed
the revisions to an old policy that outlined the county retirement incentive
program, and the topic of old age was
discussed, a timely issue as Alberta Seniors week is June 2-8.

Finally, the Internet experience youve always wanted

is here, thanks to Xplornets introduction of 4G WiMax
in Strathmore.

The revision suggested removing the

age limit restriction of not older than
65, as it discriminates against employees older than that age working for the
county. The policy came into effect in
2005, which at that time supposed everyone would retire at age 65.
However, new Alberta government
guidelines have eliminated mandatory
retirement allowing workers to stay in
the workplace longer.
To apply for the incentive, employees must be over age 55 and have five
years continuous service. Notice for
retirement changed from year end to
three months. At that time, they would
receive three percent, times their years
of service in a lump sum payment, up
to a maximum of 50 per cent of their
yearly salary.
Councillor Alice Booth wondered if
designating age 55 was too young to
offer the program.
We dont want to encourage them
to retire too early, said Booth.
Councillor Don Vander Velde countered Booths speculation, saying, 55
only seems young when you are 70.
The last Canadian census showed a
28 per cent jump in those considering
retirement and they were in the 55-64
age range.
Councillor Brenda Knight said she
would rather see the policy focus on
years served than age.
Many companies are opting to have
former retired workers come back in
consulting positions, or on a part-time
basis, as qualified workers are harder
to find. This policy stipulates that if
you return to the county in another
position after you retire, you pay the
money back.
It also only applies to employees
hired before Jan. 2, 2013, and wont be
given to those hired after that date.
This policy is an old one and somewhat dated, said Reeve Glenn Koester.
Council accepted the changes recommended by staff.

The Strathmore Municipal Library
was in council on May 21 to gather
councils support and input on how the
library presents itself into the future.
The focus of the presentation was to
provide information about the library
and its many services, followed by a
discussion around four questions: what
are councils expectations and preferences for a library expansion project?;
where does the library expansion sit in
councils priorities for capital projects?;
what support does council think it can
provide for the library expansion in the
future?; and what steps/process does
council need from the library board as
the project moves forward?
Were not here tonight asking for
money right now we need your ideas
and your help, said library board chair
Jim Greer.
Since 2002 the average number of patron visits per week has increased by
675, and the number of cardholders has
increased by 2,524 in that same time
frame. Circulation has also increased by
almost 5,000, interlibrary loans by over

FRIENDS IN
NEED
TRANSPORT
SERVICES
Unique transportation solution comes to Strathmore
A new and unique service has come to Strathmore, and the county, thanks to local businesswoman Lynn Coldwell. Friends in Need Transport Services officially began operating on April
1, 2014.
Coldwell had previously worked as a driver
transporting seniors and persons with disabilities
to medical and non-medical appointments.
Enjoying the work I did, I realized my passion
is to help others and that is where Friends in Need
Transport Services was born, said Coldwell.
She has lived in Strathmore her entire life, and
knew there was a need for this unique service due
to the large population of seniors and people with
disabilities. She also knows that some of the other
transport services for those people are sometimes
not able to meet all of the demands, and so Friends
in Need provides additional options to those in
the community.
Friends in Need offers transportation to both
medical and non-medical appointments for any
client in need, including those under the age of

65. Depending on the client and their particular

needs Coldwell also offers door and indoor services as well. She will take a client to their appointment, and wait for them, or even keep the client
company if they want.
Coldwell will also take small groups, usually
four people, shopping in the city while she waits,
or out for special outings within Strathmore.
Friends In Need isnt just for those living in
Strathmore; Coldwell also caters to rural residents,
offering all of the same services listed above.
I treat each and everyone of my clients with
compassion and respect, said Coldwell.
Once they are in my vehicle they are in my care
till they arrive back home safely.
For now Friends in Need just operates with the
one vehicle, but as business grows so will the fleet
and the drivers.
Anyone looking for more information about
this great, new service being offered, or for those
wishing to book a trip, contact Lynn Coldwell at
403-934-8540.

44,000, and public computer use has

also dramatically increased.
The library now provides more services than ever with things like childrens programming, meeting room
rentals, high speed wireless internet,
videoconferencing, tech support and
tutoring programs, and e-reader lending.
Despite all the increases, the librarys
building size has remained the same
and a solution is needed in the near future. The current space is 4,432 square
feet, plus the meeting room. In order to
be on par with future growth, and to
be able to continue to provide proper
service to the communitys needs, the
library requires an additional 8,500
square feet of building space. A facility
needs assessment has been completed
and a number of different options were
suggested.
The library board is currently looking
at the option of expanding the existing
library to provide the additional space.
Councillor Pat Fule, who had previously sat on the library board, said he
thought one of the recommendations in
the needs assessment was to not look
at expansion.
Greer clarified that it was not one
of the first suggestions because there
were concerns about infrastructure
problems, but the new board can see
many benefits to staying in the current
location. One of the reasons the assessors didnt want to grow there was a
worry about mould, and the board believe those issues have been addressed.
During expansion there would have
to be renovations done to the current
space as well, so the board is confident
any infrastructure issues would be addressed at that time.
The Lambert Centre offers a number
of positives. There is ample parking;
there is already major infrastructure
such as the SuperNet. One of the best
is that fact that people know where we
are so there wouldnt need to be any
sort of marketing plan or that sort of information to move people, said Greer.
Another perk is that it is downtown,
meaning they can continue to support
the downtown area, and that the library
itself will continue to benefit from foot
traffic.
Councillor John Rempel suggested
that the questions be left with them to
discuss, and that Greer and members
of the board would be invited back to
council at a later date for responses.
The key thought is to move forward
on this. If we can have a commitment
as to a time that you would be willing

to invite us back, Im sure we would

certainly be able to clear our schedule,
said Greer.
Councillor Bob Sobol had some difficulty with the questions.
We can sit here and discuss how we
are going to support you all day long,
but at the end of the day it is going to
come down to dollars, whether we can
support you, thats the question, said
Sobol.
I dont think youre going to have
any question of finding seven councillors that support the library, the question is going to be whether the taxpayers can afford to build an addition and
until we know those numbers its a
very tough decision to have.
Greer said as part of the needs assessment there were numbers listed.
Expansion was ball-parked at $6.7 million and a new facility at $7.6 million.
The board is looking at the more affordable of the options, but it will still
be an expensive project.
We also recognize that resources are
limited for council, this project wont
go forward without provincial granting, and one of the points that we need
your support from is support of that
when we go to the province, said Geer.
The library also knows they will
need to do their own fundraising, and
already has some seed money in place.
The library has also recently received
their charitable number and can now
step up their fundraising and begin
moving forward with that.
We have a lot of work ahead of us
and we recognize that, we also recognize your concerns but we need to
move forward on this and we need to
(get) a lot of people involved and one
of those groups is town council, said
Greer.
Council agreed to have representatives of the library return in the next
few months to discuss the questions at
hand, options and possible solutions.

Alternative to
community living
for seniors
MANNY EVERETT
Times Contributor

The community is getting older, the
baby boomers are becoming our senior
residents and facilities are filling up
quickly. Our seniors need to know that
there are choices for assisted living and
other opportunities for care in the communities in which they live.
Meadowlark Care Home in Strathmore has adopted a philosophy of
taking care of seniors in every capacity of their life. Debbie Wakelam has
been running her home in Strathmore
for a number of years now and says
that there is a huge difference in assisted living and care. The senior is
treated with the highest respect despite
their age or level of ability. The familyfriendly atmosphere at Meadowlark allows residents to participate in as much
or as little as they want. The staff and
residents are family together working
in the home to make it a safe, warm
and inviting place to live. Wakelam says
that part of their mission to the residents every day is asking the question
how can I help you today to make it
just right for you?
Personal Health Care Assistant Veronica has seen both ends of the spectrum
in the care of seniors. She has experienced the large group setting of a care
facility and the smaller scale of living
in a family environment. While there is
a need for both, she recognizes the difference comes not in the hours of work
but the kind of work that the hours encompass. Her days are filled with building relationships with the residents at
Meadowlark. The personal one-on-one
time with six residents currently allows the staff to make those relationships meaningful and worthwhile. The
relaxed atmosphere of participating in
making meals together, eating together,
baking together, gardening together,
crafting together, house chores and visiting with one another is recognized in
the responses of the residents. There is
a reciprocal relationship between staff
and residents.
Wakelam says they try to follow the
Eden Philosophy of care, which abides
by 10 philosophies and include the following principles. The ten Eden philosophies of care include:
1. The three plagues of loneliness,
helplessness, and boredom account for
the bulk of suffering among our elders.
2. An elder-centered community commits to creating a human habitat where
life revolves around close and continuing contact with plants, animals, and
children. It is these relationships that
provide the young and old alike with a
pathway to a life worth living.
3. Loving companionship is the antidote to loneliness. Elders deserve easy
access to human and animal companionship.
4. An elder-centered community creates opportunity to give as well as receive care. This is the antidote to help-

lessness.
5. An elder-centered community imbues daily life with variety and spontaneity by creating an environment in
which unexpected and unpredictable
interactions and happenings can take
place. This is the antidote to boredom.
6. Meaningless activity corrodes the
human spirit. The opportunity to do
things that we find meaningful is essential to human health.
7. Medical treatment should be the
servant of genuine human caring, never
its master.
8. An elder-centered community honours its elders by de-emphasizing topdown bureaucratic authority, seeking
instead to place the maximum possible decision-making authority into the
hands of the elders or into the hands of
those closest to them.
9. Creating an elder-centered community is a never-ending process. Human
growth must never be separated from
human life.
10. Wise leadership is the lifeblood of
any struggle against the three plagues.
For it, there can be no substitute. [from
Providence Health Care]
What are the defining characteristics
of a Meadowlark Care in Strathmore?
While these defining characteristics
arent from other types of supportive
living options, always a true definition
of every care home, they do serve to
distinguish their care and assisted living housing.
1. Participatory activities each day
that keeps one active and feeling useful
2. Shared family-like setting at
mealtimes helps to keep people talking to one another, discussions of current events & awareness of significant
events in each others lives.
3. Personal care assistants are able
to provide more individualized care to
meet elders changing needs.
4. Connections with pets, children
and community that help keep boredom
and loneliness away. In one particular
instance, for example, one staff member brings her three-year-old daughter
to work occasionally; Haileigh, helps
with crafts meals and the seniors absolutely love her as much as she loves
them.
The Meadowlark Care Home can
hold a resident capacity of nine and
currently sits with six residents. For

Zombie slaying fun at StayDead Events

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Last month, on May 3, former Standard resident
Cailin Aird Kroon, her fianc Shawn Paterson and
a group of friends took part in a StayDead Event,
which is a zombie-immersion game where people
have to fight to survive.
The day started at 5 a.m. at the Sportsplex in
TsuTina, where all of the survivors had to huddle
in a line-up, waiting to be processed and searched
before actually starting the event. They were loaded
onto buses and told that one of the four buses was
going to explode, immediately getting participants
into game play mode.
While there was some excitement throughout the
day - she used her in-game medic skills to bandage
someone shot in the foot, during which he was
almost bitten; losing all her weapons to a group
coming after her with assault rifles, and making a
daring escape; and collecting a zombie for a live
specimen sample - the event all in all didnt quite
live up to expectations and the $150 ticket price.
We expected the game to pick up after about an
hour, as people were getting comfortable, and we
thought this was probably part of the game, and all
hell was about to be unleashed, said Kroon.
People were fortifying themselves into bathrooms and locker rooms, but we kept wandering.
We didnt want to be stuck somewhere with no
exit.
The calm lasted much longer than expected and
the next few hours involved the occasional killing
of zombies, which were seen about every 20 minutes.
Kroon said a lot of time was spent chatting with
other survivors, playing basketball and generally
killing time, not the zombies they had hoped for.
At one point she and Paterson were beginning to
consider going home, they were tired, hungry and
tired of being bored.
Around 1 p.m. things began to really get going.
The UN came with promises of a supply drop. They
needed to also get to the lab, but the doctor there
didnt trust them after having issues with the military in the past.
The next hours were full of fun. The UN held
down the upstairs hallway, and eventually the food
arrived. It was cans of soup, which I will not eat
cold, but I took one anyway to trade if necessary,
said Kroon.
Zombies came slowly, and Kroon contemplated
stealing one of the UN members sidearms, holding them hostage and taking the rest of the weapons for the other survivors. None of the scenarios
seemed favourable, so she stuck to daydreaming it.
There was some hostile fire, and after a bit there
was an offer of a truce. The truce only lasted for a
short while. One of her group members had gone
to check things out, and when he came back to

warn the UN about what was happening someone

got a little trigger happy, killing him and the information.
Eventually Kroon and her fianc both got M4s
and began taking out the zombies that were
swarming the gate. Things picked up from there
for Kroon, until she was hit in the back of the neck
by a bullet from a bandit and was eliminated from
the game.
After that Kroon decided to put on a zombie mask
and try it from a different angle. Paterson was still
out there and she wanted to make the most of it.
The mask was horrible, she couldnt see and eventually she gave up, discouraged by the whole thing.
Paterson made it to the end, one of only five survivors out of the 200 who played.
The guns were what made the game fun for
Kroon and Paterson.
I had a great time in the end, but Im not impressed by the lackluster start. The game ended at
6:30 p.m. or 7 p.m., which meant that over half the
game was boring, said Kroon.
She had heard rumours that many of the zombies
hadnt shown up, and while the show must go on,
it put a damper on her view of the day. She did
learn a number of valuable lessons for next time,
and despite the slow start, the end half of the game
was what she had hoped for, and Kroon does plan
to attend another StayDead Event in the future.

With a win against Chestermere High School

on May 29, the Strathmore High School Spartans boys rugby team would have earned a spot
at zones. The Spartans had lost to Chestermere
on May 9 by a score of 12-10, and dropped once
again 27-17, eliminating them from potential
zone play.
If they play like they know they can play
how they did in the first 10 minutes of the Chestermere game they can be very good, coach
Brad Steele said of his Spartans. They can be
competitive. We just have to keep our level of
play consistently high. Theres lots of very good
rugby players.
Chestermeres size brought a big advantage to
the game. Steele knew this having seen them
play before.
Theyre big and strong, he said. We came
out very strong in the beginning too. We
marched them down the field a couple of times,
and we scored first. Then we couldnt maintain
that level of play. In the last ten minutes, we
played very well again, but again couldnt maintain. They scored in the end.
The game was within reach for the Spartans,
only down by three at one point, but they suffered a few team lapses. Steele and his boys
know that zones would have been a challenge
as its lose one and youre out and against
teams in their area that they may be unfamiliar
with.
Weve played them all over the years, but
some of these teams we would never have seen
their players before, Steele said.
The Spartans season isnt over however, as
they are hosting provincials; they will play
against Albertas best. However, having not
made it to zones, Steele knows his boys will
have to bring their A-game against some very
talented squads.
I hope to be competitive, and I hope the effort is there. Theres no reason for us to lose, if
we rise to the occasion, Steele said.
The Spartans unfortunately will have no home
field advantage; even though they are hosting,
all games will be played at the Calgary Rugby
Union June 6-7.
It would have been nice to win those, and be
in zones, Steele said. We had some disappointing losses games by two points or three. With
a play here or a dropped ball there, the season
standing-wise could have been much different.
Meanwhile the Strathmore ladies rugby team
played in zones on May 31. They lost a tight
final and finished in second for the zone. Both
teams will be playing in provincials June 6-7 in
Calgary.

Moving on from zones

ARYSSAH STANKEVITSCH
Times Reporter

The south central zone brought their
best track and field stars to Foothills
Athletic Park in Calgary on May 27 for
zone finals. Many students from Strathmore High School (SHS) moved on to
qualify for provincials.
Overall, its pretty good. Its our
second year of this format of splitting
coaches into specialization areas. So we
have a bigger team, and thus, results,
said SHS track coach Paul Sonsteby.
The relay kids we havent had a
lot of time for competition, but our exchanges went very well. The kids were
pleased with this.
Strathmores senior girls 4x100 relay
team ( Jade Balance, Carter Jones, Jessica Murphy and Cassandra Fisk) finished
second in their last heat -- moving on to
provincials -- as did their junior boys
equivalents (Daryl Agerskov, Tristan
Hruby, Luke MacDonald and Josh Lawal) with a time of 49.81 seconds. This
finish was only 0.6 behind the leading
team.
We had some very good finishes,
Sonsteby said. Were losing some great
seniors this year, like Carter Jones and
kids like that, but we have a strong intermediate and junior core. Its going to
look good next year.
Intermediate Karly Larson of SHS fin-

ished first in her heat, but third in the

final of the 400m, with a time of 1:04.96.
She did not move on to provincials, but
earned six points for the school, also
shaving three seconds off her time at
counties. Intermediate Spartan Kyle
Foster did move on for his 400m, finishing second in the zones final with a
time of 54:63.
These are challenging events were
seeing kids finish well in. When you
have heats, you dont necessarily know
how the kids in the race coming are doing. Thats thrown a few off, Sonsteby
said.
Kenny Le May of Strathmore finished
second in boys senior discus with a distance of 30.53m, moving onto provincials.
As for junior boys, Siksika High
Schools Brodie and Tyrine Sun Walk
finished first and second in the 1500m.
Brodie earned a time of 4:37, with Tyrine coming in seven seconds later.
Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) had
many top ten finishes, including high
hope Christopher OLeary. OLeary
went to provincials last year for HCC,
but finished third in discus and fourth
in javelin this time around.
Teammate Okeem Samuels will be
moving on to provincials, after finishing second in both 100m and 200m for
the junior boys.

Sacred Heart Academy is excited and proud of their new playground which was installed by many
parent, teacher, Strathmore business and resident volunteers. The playground was installed in record
time on May 22-23. The cost of the playground was approximately $45,000 but would have cost substantially more had they not have had so many items donated (concrete, grading, bobcat). The school
has been fundraising for about a year with the first serious kickoff being movie night in June of 2013.

Silver at NARCH
ARYSSAH STANKEVITSCH
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Inline Hockey Association took two teams a U12 and
a U14 up to Ardrossan for the 2014
North American Roller Hockey Championships Tournament from May 24-25.
Over 20 teams attended the tournament
for different levels. Wheatlands U12s
went on to win a silver on the B-side;
the U14s lost both of their games.
They loved it, and theyre really excited, Wheatland Inline Hockey Association president Lynne Kozma said.
You could see the difference between
their challenges at the beginning to the
final; like how much they learned and
grown. They were very pleased.
Kozma mentioned that both of her
teams felt they could have performed

better had they had practices to increase their skills; the boys (all from
Strathmore) had no floor time.
They both did phenomenal for what
weve come from, Kozma said.
The groups have a tournament in Red
Deer from June 6-8: the Battle of the
Wheels. For that tournament, the boys
have already had three practices. Players unfortunately cant practice inline
outdoors due to rocks, dust, and moisture, which would damage their expensive wheels.
Lack of practices isnt decreasing the
interest, however. Kozma has many
newcomers to her teams.
Out of the kids we took in the older
group, only three have been to a tournament before. Out of my younger
group, five have played inline, Kozma
said.

Spartans
head to zones
on high note
ARYSSAH STANKEVITSCH
Times Reporter
The Strathmore Spartans boys soccer team
is heading into zones on a high note, after a
7-2 home win over Notre Dame Collegiate on
June 2.
With zones slated to start June 5-6 in Cochrane, the Spartans played a complete game
to close out the regular season.
They played one of their best games so
far, said Spartans head coach Kaitrin McDonnell. Everything that needed to come
together all clicked from the first kick. Passing and moving the play up the field let our
sweeper to get a hat trick, our striker to get
two (goals), and two of our centre mids to
capitalize on fast runs up the field. This win
will launch the team into zones this Thursday
and Friday.
Despite a pair of defeats to close out the
month of May, falling 4-2 on May 26 against
Canmore and 6-1 on May 28 against Holy
Trinity Academy (HTA), the Spartans are confident going into zones.
Strathmore will open the tournament with
a rematch against HTA on June 5 (1:30 p.m.),
before tangling with Cochrane later that day
(4:30 p.m.). Unfortunately, quite a few of key
players will miss the second game as they are
involved in other school programs, such as
track and field provincials, rugby provincials
and the schools theatre production of Shes
the Man on Thursday night.
The hardship right now is, we have eight
players showing up to practice because of
other commitments, McDonnell said. Our
kids are multi-talented. Its not fair to expect
them to come to only one event, but its not
helping the team when theyre not there.
Despite missing some key pieces, McDonnell will not put extra pressure on the existing players.
Were going to go and have fun. I dont
want to stress the boys out, McDonnell said.
Were going to take it as it comes, and focus
a little bit more on the team, with the enjoyment of the sport not necessarily the winning and losing.
So far this season, McDonnell has been extremely impressed, saying as long as the boys
have fun, learn something, and win a game or
two, shes pleased.
Thats all I can ask from these kids, she
said. These are amazing kids. They make it
easy to coach. I have seen so much improvement among so many of them, especially the
kids that have never played before. Its nice to
see that theyre actually learning some skills.

Wheatland Inline Hockey Assocations U12 team went on to win a silver for the B-side at the 2014
NARCH Tournament in Ardrossan. The team will travel to Red Deer for another tournament from June
6-8.

most sportsman-like because generally everybody is in curling, its a pretty gentlemans

game and this year at the provincial championship our team was nominated, and won,
this years sportsmanship banner.
The boys were the first team in 14 years to
win zones, and though they didnt win provincials they did get to bring home a new banner
for the school, which in itself is an achievement.
Its good to know people look for that still,
its good to know people still look for the
kindness in people, said Wilson.
Its pretty nice to be the first team to get a
sportsmanship award in the school, said Luehr.
Thurston and Anderson both also agreed
that it felt pretty good, and was kind of cool
to be part of the team that brought the sportsmanship banner to SHS.

The Jr. B Tier II Strathmore Venom
blew through the Calgary Wranglers
on May 28, 17-13, for their second win
of the season. The Venom had been
searching for their second tally in the
victory column since defeating Okotoks
on May 10. Strathmore had lost three
other matchups.
It was one of those games where I
cant really point out any one player it
was a real big team effort, coach Hal
Morris said of the Wranglers game. We
had scoring from all kinds of players on
the team, which is excellent.
Though Calgary had an identical record going into the matchup, the Venom had two weeks off with their last
game on May 11. Morris thought they
were a little rusty.
We thought theyd be a very comparable team and they were. It was
a really tough first period because we
hadnt played for two weeks, he said.
Theres still a lot of dust on the sticks
and a lot of bugs to get out of the system. Once the second and third got going, they played really, really well especially the third.
Most of the games the Venom have
lost involved a collapse defensively in
the third period; this time around, the
Venom kept it up. Chancey Guichon
was in net for the first, but was relieved
by Austin Allen for the next two periods.
Both goalies did well, Morris said.
Chancey wasnt feeling well, he still
has a bit of a cold. We let him have a
little break.
Through five season games, captain
Brady Morris is leading the Venom with
20 points.

DID YOU KNOW?

FENCES & SHEDS

When replacing a fence or putting up a new fence it is essential to
ensure that the fence is on the property line.
The easiest way to do this is to locate the boundary pins on your lot.
From there you can stake them out and run a string line as a guide for
your post placement.
There are a couple of tricks you can use to find your property pins;
1. Using your Real Property Report, you can measure the set back from your home to get a
general line set up. You can then run a line from the front of your property to the back and across
your property from side to side. Where the lines intersect will give you an approximate area to start
looking. Usually the pins are located a few inches below the surface so a shovel would be required.
2. Using the same method above, once you have determined the areas you could use a
metal detector to find your property boundary pins.
Spending a little time to find these pins and place your fence posts in the proper location will help
make sure that come the new Real Property Report you will have no problems acquiring the much
needed stamp of compliance.
Also If you are building a shed on your property you need to consider what type of development is
currently on the property as the Town of Strathmore only allows a certain percentage of your
property to be developed. This may limit the size of shed you are able to place onto your property.
