D Easy In Line Maintenance Top-entry design reduces maintenance time and manpower requirements; trim parts can be inspected, cleaned, and replaced, using the optional parts kit, without removing the body from the line. D V ersatility Uses standard easy-e r body, materials, and end connections. A wide range of pressures can be covered without the need for multiple elastomeric elements (boots). Restricted-capacity cages permit conversion to full-size trim to meet increased future needs by simply changing the cage. The regulator can be converted to pressure-loadingby changingthe pilot piping; no changes to the main body construction are required. By changingto a pilot without a restrictor, the regulator becomes a very effective high pressure relief valve (see Bulletin 71.4:399A-6365).
D In-Service Motion Inspection The motion indicator assembly with protective cover permits periodic inspection of diaphragm and diaphragm support motion without removing the regulator from service. D Buttweld End Connections Provide an economical compact design, in addition to eliminating flange gasket leakage. See figures 2 and 8. D Debris Protection The inlet strainer provides protection from occasional pipeline scale, dirt or other solid substances. D Simply Designed Piloting System The Type 161 pressure reducing pilot is designed to allow quick and simple inline valve plug inspection and maintenance.

of the flow path through a regulator. The Whisper Trim cage design was developed to control the flowstream geometry.
W6526 / IL
The Whisper Trim cage features multiple openings of precise size, shape and spacing through which the flowstream passes (figure 3). Using this cage design in conjunction with a properly selected body size can reduce noise levels as much as 18 dBA below that of a regulator selected only on the basis of capacity and control requirements.

1 Rating and end connections for other than ANSI standards, such as, DIN standards, can usually be provided; consult the Fisher sales office or sales representative. 2. The main valve body and bonnet are designed to withstand an inlet pressure of up to 1480 psig (102.0 bar). However, the main valve diaphragm should be inspected if inlet pressure exceeds 1050 psig (72.4 bar). 3. Maximum pressure drop for E55 standard diaphragm at 150_F (66_C)
Principle of Operation
As long as the outlet (control) pressure is above the pressure setting, the pilot valve plug or disk remains closed (figure 5). Inlet pressure bleeding through the Type 112 restrictor provides loading pressure to keep the Type 399A diaphragm tightly shut off. When the outlet pressure decreases below the pilot control spring setting, the pilot plug or disk assembly opens. Loading pressure bleeds downstream through the pilot faster than it can be replaced through the Type 112 restrictor. This reduces loading pressure on
top of the Type 399A diaphragm and lets inlet pressure unbalance open the Type 399A diaphragm from the bottom. Loading pressure again builds up to close the Type 399A diaphragm. The diaphragm support moves with the diaphragm to provide motion indication and to support the diaphragm when open. As the outlet pressure rises toward the pressure setting, it compresses the pilot diaphragm against the pilot control spring and lets the pilot valve plug or disk close.

Pilot Type Descriptions
The following pilot type configurations are available for the Type 399A. Type 161EBMSimilar to the Type 161M, but with a taller spring/spring case, providing higher accuracy. Downstream pressure range from 5 to 350 psig (0.34 to 24.1 bar). A static sensing (control) line is isolated from pilot bleed (exhaust). The Type 161EBM is used in working monitor and other applications that require a sensing line isolated from pilot bleed (exhaust). Type 161EBH and 161EBHMSimilar to the Type 161H and 161HM, but with a taller spring/spring case, providing higher accuracy. The Type 161EBH (pressure reducing pilot) and 161EBHM (monitor pressure reducing pilot for working monitor or separate bleed applications) are a modification of the Type 161EB and 161EBM pilots with increased setpoint capabilities (250 to 700 psig/17.2 to 48.3 bar) for the Type 399A or for other appropriate applications. The modification utilizes a standard Type 161EB/161EBM pilot spring, spring case, and body incorporating a reduced diaphragm area by the addition of a diaphragm limiter and a new diaphragm subassembly.
Type 161Downstream pressure range from 5 to 300 psig (0.34 to 21 bar). Pilot bleed exhausts downstream through the sense (control) line.
Type 161MDownstream pressure range from 5 to 300 psig (0.34 to 21 bar). A static sensing (control) line is isolated from pilot bleed (exhaust). The Type 161M is used in working monitor and other applications that require a sensing line isolated from pilot bleed (exhaust).
Type 161YDownstream pressure range from 5 inches of water column (w.c.) to 7 psig (12 mbar to 0.48 bar). Pilot bleed exhausts downstream through the sense (control) line. An internal relief valve is standard to prevent internal damage during start-up or when over-pressure conditions occur.
Type 161YMDownstream pressure range from 5 inches of water column (w.c.) to 7 psig (12 mbar to 0.48 bar). A static sensing (control) line is isolated from pilot bleed (exhaust). The Type 161YM is used in working monitor and other applications that require a sensing line isolated from pilot bleed (exhaust). An internal relief valve is standard to prevent internal damage during start-up or when over-pressure conditions occur.
Monitoring Systems
Upstream Wide-Open (Standby) Monitoring System The Type 399A pilot-operated pressure reducing regulator can be used as an upstream monitor (figure 6) by selecting the Type 161M or 161HM pilot for the upstream regulator. By connecting the pilot bleed (exhaust) to the intermediate piping, the upstream regulator will continually move open and closed as the load changes. This prevents the possibility of the boot taking a set over time. The control line is connected downstream along with the contol line of the Type 161 pilot on the working regulator. Upstream Working Monitor Installation The Type 399A pilot-operated pressure reducing regulator can be used as an upstream monitor (figure 6) by selecting the Type 161M or 161HM pilot and connecting the pilot outlet port to the intermediate pressure. The minimum pressure drop for the station, for sizing purposes, is the sum of the pressure drop for each regulator.
Type 161H and 161HMThe Type 161H (pressure reducing pilot) and 161HM (monitor pressure reducing pilot for working monitor or separate bleed applications) are a modification of the Type 161 and 161M pilots with increased setpoint capabilities (250 to 600 psig/17.2 to 41.4 bar) for the Type 399A or for other appropriate applications. The modification utilizes a standard Type 161/161M pilot spring, spring case, and body incorporating a reduced diaphragm area by the addition of a diaphragm limiter and a new diaphragm subassembly. The Type 161H/161HM is only available in a stainless steel construction.
Type 161EBSimilar to the Type 161, but with a taller spring/spring case, providing higher accuracy. Downstream pressure range from 5 to 350 psig (0.34 to 24.1 bar). Pilot bleed exhausts downstream through the sense (control) line.

Downstream Wide-Open (Standby) Monitoring System A downstream wide-open monitoring system (figure 6) reduces pressure and throttles while the upstream working regulator is in operation. Due to the Type 399A regulator flow-to-open design, the downstream monitoring regulator opens only far enough to pass the required flow and changes position with each flow rate change. The upstream working regulator automatically supplies the correct intermediate pressure required to keep the downstream monitoring regulator open to the correct position. This arrangement offers continual movement of the diaphragm in the downstream monitoring regulator and allows it to take control at any time.
399A working monitor this pilot is a Type 161M, 161HM, Type 161YM, 161EBM or 161EBHM.
Capacity Information
Tables 6, 7, and 8 show the natural gas regulating capacities of the Type 399A regulator at selected inlet pressures and outlet pressure settings. Flows are in thousands of scfh (60_F and 14.7 psia) of 0.6 specific gravity gas at 60_F. To determine equivalent capacities for air, propane, butane, or nitrogen, multiply the capacity by the following appropriate conversion factor: 0.775 for air, 0.628 for propane, 0.548 for butane, or 0.789 for nitrogen. For gases of other specific gravities, multiply the given capacity by 0.775, and divide by the square root of the appropriate specific gravity. Then, if capacity is desired in normal cubic meters per hour at 0_C and 1.01325 bar, multiply scfh by 0.0268. To find approximate regulating capacities at pressure settings not given in tables 6, 7, or 8 or to find wideopen flow capacities for relief sizing at any inlet pressure, perform one of the following procedures and convert according to the factors in the first two paragraphs of this section if necessary.
Working Monitor Installation Unlike its counterpart in the wide open monitoring system the working monitor system (figure 6) allows full operation of both main regulators during normal operation. In the event of a failure of either main regulator the other regulator will assume the entire system pressure reduction function. As shown in figure 6 an additional working monitor pilot must be used within a working monitor installation system. For the Type

1. Typical proportional band includes outlet pressure droop plus hysteresis (friction), but does not include lockup. 2. Proportional band was determined with a pressure drop ranging from 50 to 150 psig (3.45 to 10.3 bar). Approximately double the proportional band if the pressure drop is less than 50 psig (3.45 bar). 3. Proportional band was determined with a pressure drop ranging from 100 to 300 psig (6.89 to 20.7 bar). Approximately double the proportional band if the pressure drop is less than 100 psig (20.7 bar).
1. For critical pressure drops (absolute outlet pressure equal to or less than one-half of absolute inlet pressure), use the following formula: Q = (P1abs)(Cg)(1.29) where Q = flow capacity in scfh, P1abs = absolute inlet pressure in psig (P1 gauge + 14.7), and
Cg = regulating or wide-open gas sizing coefficient from table 9 2. For pressure drops lower than critical (absolute outlet pressure greater than one-half of absolute inlet pressure), use the Fisher sizing slide rule or the sizing nomographs and procedure in Catalog 10.
