Summary
Hi there! My name is Zameena and I'm a senior in the Honors Program at the State University of New York
at New Paltz. Currently a double-major in Spanish and Journalism with a concentration in Public Relations,
I've been able to explore my heritage as well as reinforce my passion for communication. Having traveled
and lived in other countries has truly engaged me in being a global citizen, mindful and considerate of topics
and concerns abroad. Gaining interdisciplinary experience in public relations, marketing, and journalism has
prepared me to pursue a career in the communications industry--the ever-changing yet steady pulse that keeps
the world in sync. For a complete portfolio, please visit www.zmejiawrites.tumblr.com

Tick Talk: An Investigative Project on Lyme Disease
January 2014 to May 2014
Members:Zameena Mejia, Sonia Shah
Tick Talk is the result of 14 weeks of collaborative investigative reporting conducted at the State University
of New York at New Paltz under the aegis of Science, environment, and disease: new approaches to science
journalism, a seminar led by science journalist Sonia Shah, the 2014 James H. Ottaway Sr. Visiting
Professor of Journalism. The website is comprised of articles each individual student researched for and
wrote. My focus was on Lyme disease's presence and effect on residents and visitors of New York, more
specifically visitors of the renown Wallkill Valley Rail Trail. Here's a brief look at my article, "On the
Trail of De-Railing Lyme." "When nature on the Rail Trail is so close and available, its difficult to resist
wandering off the beaten path. But as ready as some are to jump at adventure past the brush, Lyme-hosting
ticks have made this stretch of trail of their home. Here are the stories from members of the Town of New

Paltz who often take to the Rail Trail, a five-minute walk from Main Street in downtown New Paltz, and how
they prepare for traveling an area where they know they are at risk of being exposed to ticks."
