Interior Health Authority Plans To
Reduce Kaslo Emergency Services
Interior Health will proceed with changes to emergency
department hours at Victorian Community Health Cen-
tre (VCHC) on Tuesday, April 1. Te new hours will be
Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, with the exception of
statutory holidays. Health Centre hours will remain 9 am
to 5 pm Monday to Friday.
Tis decision comes as a result of notifcation from the
physician group that they are unable to move forward
with their proposal to provide 24/7 emergency depart-
ment coverage. Te physicians had been exploring a fee-
for-service rather than a contract compensation model;
however they have been unable to fnd enough physicians
to make the proposal viable.
Interior Health sincerely appreciates the eforts phys-
icians have made to support emergency services in Kaslo,
said Andrew Neuner, VP Community Integrated Health
Services. Our focus remains building a strong robust pri-
mary care centre with ready access to physicians, diagnos-
tic testing and public health nursing services. We will con-
tinue to recruit physicians who are committed to providing

Vancouver International Mountain
Film Festival Comes To Nelson
On March 5 at 7 pm, the SelfDesign High WildEarth
Outdoor Program is bringing the 2014 Vancouver Inter-
national Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF) to the Nelson
Civic Teatre. Tis festival celebrates mountain sports and
culture and will feature thrilling flms such as festival fnal-
ists Super Mom, Castles in the Sky and many more.
VIMFF aims to inspire and entertain the commun-
ity with the use of unique flms and presentations that
illustrate experiences and cultures from all corners of the
globe by bringing international and local flmmakers and
photographers together with international competitions.
Te idea is to promote positive life values and an active
lifestyle, and to bring various communities together.
Youth participating in the SelfDesign High WildEarth
Outdoor Program are organizing this flm festival, with
guidance from their Mentor, Blue Netherclif, as a fund-
raising efort to support upcoming outdoor adventures.
Te focus of this festival is a great ft for this outdoor ad-
venture group that has been busy learning how to explore
and appreciate our areas natural landscape, while concur-
rently becoming aware of how to stay safe and be respect-
ful while in the wilderness. In addition, through the pro-
cess of organizing the festival the youth are learning about
what it takes to organize, promote and host an event.
Te SelfDesign High WildEarth Outdoor Program is an
adventure based, experiential high school program. Par-
ticipants develop leadership, entrepreneurial and team-
work skills that include trip planning, risk assessment,
environmental stewardship, guiding, frst aid, avalanche
awareness, canoeing, hiking certifcation, interpersonal
communication skills and group facilitation. Tis program
includes courses like Recreational Leadership, Adventure
Tourism, Environmental Studies and Outdoor Education.
Each learner is also completing an independent study pur-
suing their own interests in related topics from outdoor
photography to injury prevention in adventure sports.
Core subjects such as Math, Science, Socials and English
are being completed alongside the program.
Tickets are $15 at the door; free for accompanied kids

Tis change in service means transportation to neigh-
bouring sites is critical in emergency situations. Interior
Health is working in partnership with the BC Ambulance
Service (BCAS) to ensure residents have timely access
to high level care using skilled paramedics (both on the
ground and in the air), and Interior Healths High Acu-
ity Response Team (HART) based in Trail. Tis practice,
which is in place at other Interior Health sites without 24/7
emergency department coverage, recognizes that it is vital
to minimize the time to high level care. As staf ng allows,
the Kaslo emergency department will be open 24/7 until the
new hours take efect in April. Tere may still be times when
limited nursing and/or physician availability will result in
emergency department closures in the months ahead.
When Te Emergency Department Is Closed:
Residents should call 9-1-1 in any emergency and they
will be transported to a facility with a higher level of care.
When the emergency department is closed, residents will
fnd a public phone available outside VCHC to call 9-1-1.
For less urgent matters, area residents may choose to drive
to the emergency department at Kootenay Lake Hospital
in Nelson or call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1. Te toll-free line
provides 24-hour, confdential health information and
advice from a registered nurse.

Keying In Piano Power
With an eye on inspiring the future generation of great
musicians, Selkirk College Music & Technology Program
instructor Gilles Parenteau is putting together a rare gath-
ering of the communitys most talented keyboard mentors.
In an evening dubbed Piano Power, nine Nelson area
keyboard teachers and an assortment of current Selkirk
College music students will put on a performance at the
Shambhala Music & Performance Hall on February 27.
Its going to be the frst time all these teachers are per-
forming in one room at the same time, says Parenteau.
Its going to be a pretty special night.
Te featured teachers are Muriel Tyler, Dorothy Fraser,
Nancy Potter, Anne Macdonald, Donna Goodwin, Jane
Ballantine, Danielle Corbin, Judy Runions and Paren-
teau. Tey will perform pieces in a wide variety of musical
styles from classical to wild electronics.
Te goal of the evening is to show young people of the
community the power of piano.
With instruments like the gui-
tar capturing the imagination of
youth, Parenteau feels keyboards
are getting lef behind because the
instrument lacks some of the cool
factor todays younger generation
covets. By showing current and
potential students the impressive
skills of their teachers, the Sel-
kirk College keyboard instructor
hopes to inspire a new generation.

Caroline Sanderson
Caroline died on February 19, 2014, in Kaslo among fam-
ily and friends. She was born to Edwin and Lillian Ash on
September 28, 1947. She leaves behind two loving children,
Maurice and Delrae Fawcett.
Caroline was a gentle teacher and will be
remembered by friends and family as
loving, generous, mindful, creative,
adventurous, a voracious reader,
and for her enormous appreci-
ation for the simplest things. So
many children have benefted
from her sweet tutelage and play
time. She preferred walking to
running and enjoyed her natural
surroundings wherever she
was in the world. She was
exceptionally good at hon-
ouring her own and other
peoples journeys.
She will be missed by many.

Kaslo & District Community
Forest Society AGM
In preparation for the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, the board of the
community forest society invites and encourages area residents to:
Purchase a 2014 membership
Memberships are valid for a calendar year. In order to vote at the AGM, you must have a 2014 membership.
If you were eligible to vote at the 2013 AGM, then you can purchase your 2014 membership the evening
of the AGM (or earlier). If you dont hold a 2013 membership, then you must purchase your membership at
least 30 days before the AGM (that is, before March 17, 2014).
Consider running as a candidate for the board
There are four (4) seats to be lled on the nine member board. In order to be nominated you must:
Be a member of the society and be nominated, in writing, by two other members.
Nominations must be received by Wednesday, April 2, 2014.
An all candidates meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 10, 2014.
Submit resolutions for the AGM
In order to submit a resolution for the AGM, you must be a member of the society.
To be included on the agenda of the AGM, resolutions must be received before March 12, 2014.
