Court rules benet cuts policy lawful

THE Court of Appeal has upheld the legality of government benet cuts which campaigners claim are pushing people to breaking point. Christian leaders warned cutbacks and failures in the welfare system are forcing thousands of people to use food banks. But appeal judges ruled two of the coalitions most controversial measures the so-called bedroom tax and the benet cap were lawful. Lord Dyson, Master of the Rolls, rejected a two-pronged legal attack and said the court could only intervene if the measures were manifestly without reasonable foundation. The judge ruled both challenges must fail. Campaigners vowed to ght on, saying the cuts are having a devastating impact on vulnerable people.

Man held over Alps killings is released

A FORMER policeman arrested over the killing of an IraqiBritish engineer and his family in a suspected hit in the French Alps has been released without charge. Police said the 48-year-old man was still being investigated over alleged arms trafcking. Saad al-Hilli and his wife Ikbal, from Claygate in Surrey, and her mother Suhaila al-Allaf, who lived in Sweden, were shot dead in their car on a forest road near Annecy on 5 September, 2012. A local cyclist, Sylvain Mollier, was also murdered. The former policeman from the Haute-Savoie region was arrested on Tuesday. Prosecutor Eric Maillaud said he was released as no direct link with the murders had been found.

Stations get a 3m Games upgrade

PASSENGER information screens and new parking barriers are among a range of train station upgrades planned for the Commonwealth Games. The 3 million investment will also see new ticket machines, ramps and platform extensions at stations throughout Scotland, transport minister Keith Brown said. Commonwealth fund for young gogetters

TEN young entrepreneurs will be helped to start their own business as part of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games legacy. The Beyond the Finish Line project will challenge them to nd solutions to city-centre decline, including basing their businesses in disused stores in Glasgow.
