The Fight Goes On!

I can still remember that day,
I believe that most of us can
remember exactly what we were
doing or where we were when we
heard the news. For our generation, 9/11 had a very similar effect to that
of President Kennedy’s assassination on the generation of our parents and
grandparents.
Losing one’s innocence, understanding that the world can be a cruel
desolate place devoid of morals or ethics is a horrible reality to wake up
to. Yet I am amazed! As much as we say we remember what happened
on Sept. 11, 2001, as much as we go through the motions of trying to
understand and as much as we sometimes still break into tears, I believe
most of us have truly forgotten why this happened.
I refuse to admit that our country was not prepared, for how can we
possibly defend and protect our country against a terrorist plot that seemed
to spring to life from the pages of a Hollywood Blockbuster Movie script! Who can think of such a way to murder
people in cold blood? The answer: Radical Islamist Fascists!
For those of us who have been to Israel, it is not hard to understand what the threat of Radical Islam is really like.
Israel is surrounded by enemies on all sides who espouse Radical, Fascist and murderous Islamic ideologies. Even
those countries like Egypt and Jordan whom Israel has peace treaties with - struggle internally to contain the threat
of being “eaten alive” by that ugly monster!
I remember a cartoon that was published right after 9/11; it showed a calendar in Israel where all the days on it
were marked as Sept. 11. Yes, Israel is prepared and always alert, not because it wants to but because it needs to!
And still, sadly, as prepared as we can be, sometimes there is no way of anticipating what could happen next.
When you travel through Israel, if you pay close attention, when you come upon a place where a terrorist attack
once took place you can see a small plaque listing the names of our fallen brothers and sisters. Instead of making
grandiose monuments and pledging over and over again not to forget, Israel actually does something about it. The
most important step in doing something about terror is understanding who, what and how we are fighting.
Very often I watch in disbelief how we try to apologize for the world! A few months ago, President Obama went to
Cairo and delivered an embarrassing and short-sighted speech where he called on The Muslim World to join America
in creating a better world.
Did anyone try to remind the President that all of these “moderate Muslims” he was trying to extend his hand to
were absolutely SILENT after 9/11? I vividly remember all media outlets interviewing Muslims and asking them for
their thoughts right after 9/11. The majority did not condemn the hijackers and their evil plot. Most of them simply
remained silent.
Time and time again, the defense was used that as long as Israel existed, these things will continue to happen.
Time and time again, we heard then and we hear now that Zionism is the problem – according to President Obama,
Israeli “Settlements” are the problem. NO! The problem is murderers running around without restraint as we try to
appease them again and again.

My feet are wet, my sleeves are rolled up, and everything seems to be up and
running as quick as a blink at Temple Beth Sholom. I am looking forward to
meeting all of you and hearing about your connection to this wonderful shul.
Please be patient with me as I slowly learn everybody’s name…
You will also get to know me little by little along this journey… So many things are important to me as a cantor…
Hopefully at our services you will see that the participation of the congregation is a must in my eyes. Yes, it can be
hard to join in the singing when there are new melodies to get used to. Just try. Close your eyes if you have to, or use
the text in our siddurim as an aid. I want you to feel comfortable in joining me.
After all, the chanting of our prayers in synagogue is not a performance! Judaism is not a spectator sport – we are
all part of the game. When the whole assembly adds to the conglomeration of the symphony in song, we are all back
at Mount Sinai together. The music is that powerful! And my favorite moments on the bimah are when I am able to
stop singing and listen to the beauty of scores of voices in unison, all around me.
So, when you see me at shul, introduce yourself to me, be patient with me, and when we are davening –
sing with me.

Solomon Schechter Day School of Las Vegas

Opens 2009-2010
The Solomon Schechter Day School of Las Vegas opened its sixth
year of school on Monday, August 24, 2009! This year is special
because it is both the first year the school has not added a new
grade (Schechter is a K-5 elementary school) and the first year
students will begin the year in the Friedman Family Pavilion.
Schechter classrooms are now state-of-the-art and include SMART
Board technology. Amazingly, even in these difficult economic

Vegas’ only Robotics & Engineering Laboratory in Schechter’s
state-of-the-art Science Lab. Under the dynamic leadership of new
Science Teacher Rebecca Rouas, Schechter students will receive
cutting edge science education. Kids came home the first day of

Kindergarten Schechter Parent Organization Hosts
“Welcome Back Picnic”
The Schechter Parent Organization held its annual “Welcome Back
Picnic” on Sunday, September 13th. The event took place in Paseos
Park in Summerlin with a large crowd in attendance. The afternoon
featured water play, face-painting, a bounce house and more. The
Schechter Parent Organization looks forward to offering Schechter
parents even more opportunities to learn, celebrate, and create
community than ever before.
Schechter Holds Back to School Night
On September 15th, Schechter held its annual “Back to School”
night. Parents had an opportunity in a relaxed environment to
learn more about their children’s teachers, classroom routines,
curriculum and special projects. It was also an opportunity for
parents to volunteer for committees and to register their credit
cards on escrip.com (you don’t have to be a Schechter Parent
register) to make donations to Schechter. Thanks to the Parent
Organization and the Schechter Committee for their help in
First Day of Second Grade organizing the evening.

It all began on August 23, when the Religious School Faculty gathered together at our Faculty
Orientation to begin planning what will surely be one of the most exciting years of the Judy and
Ronald Mack School of Religious Studies! Later that day a large number of new and returning
families attended our annual “Back to School BBQ”. (Thanks to the Men’s Club for all their help in
preparing this years bbq.) This year the new integrated curriculum that was introduced last year to our Third through Seventh
Graders has been applied to our K-2nd Grade program. We look forward to matching the same level of energy and excitement
in our younger grades as we do our older ones.
On September 13th we welcomed back students, parents and teachers as the first day of Religious School officially began!
With the help of our energetic faculty, parent volunteers and our wonderful Midrasha students, the first day of Religious School
went according to plan. Students dove right into their studies in each of their classes while finding time to make decorations
for Sukkot. We are looking forward to hanging these beautiful decorations around the Sukkah!!!
We hope all Religious School families can join us for some special upcoming events:
To celebrate Sukkot, we will be holding the third annual “Pizza in the Hut” on Wednesday, October 7th, from 5:30-6:30

As summer came to an end, Kadima/USY began to pick
up speed! It was very exciting to see such a great turn out
for our annual “You Survived Your First Day of School”
kick-off event at Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt on August
24th. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet so many
future Kadimaniks (4th – 6th Grade), Jr USYers (7th – 8th
Grade) and Sr. USYers (9th – 12th Grade), and to see their
excitement for what is in store this upcoming year. More
than fifty students joined us as we rang in the new school
year with fun, friends and of course frozen yogurt!
For one of the final moments of summer, TBS teens
journeyed once again to the happiest place on earth!
Students met up with over 350 USYers from across the
Far West Region at Disneyland, as they began to build
friendships that will last a lifetime. TBS USY looks forward
to inviting students from across our region to join us for
special weekend shabbatonim throughout the upcoming USY Disneyday
year!
This year, USY launched Project Isaiah – the food drive
that took place between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
Last year Temple Beth Sholom donated 2,351 pounds of
food to the Jewish Family Service Agency in Las Vegas.
This year under Project Isaiah, USYers were very excited
to donate more then 3,000 pounds of food to the JFSA.
We would like to welcome all teens to join us during
our weekly USY Lounge Night. Thanks to some generous
contributions, we are pleased to unveil the newly
remodeled USY Youth Lounge! The USY Youth Lounge
features a Connelly pool table, ping pong table, dart board
and TV/Wii. USY Lounge Night takes place Wednesday
evenings from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM and follows the
Religious School calendar.

Summer is finally disappearing and autumn is quickly approaching. The seasons come and go, but Women’s League
remains. Even as the days shorten, we can still grow ideas, allow our dreams to take root and believe in the possibilities
that exist. As the New Year begins, let us plant afresh and make sure that we spiritually blossom.
Each month, WL has a program planned that we hope will energize and inform you, at the same time, being fun.
From an intriguing book review and panel discussion of “The Faith Club” on September 30th to an exciting Paid Up
Membership Brunch with Congresswoman Shelley Berkley on October 25th, or to an innovative and unique Hanukkah
Happening on November 22,
we are doing it. And this is
just the beginning.

National Leadership Training

 B’nei Mitzvah
B’nei Mitzvah Happenings - By Adam Brustein
As I write this article, summer is ending, and a new school year has begun. Already,
our weekly B’nai Mitzvot is in full swing, and the High Hoy Days are right around the
corner. Although many were away for much of the season, I was pleased that we
were able to have a nice representation of Torah Readers from our post-B’nai Mitzvah
students throughout the summer. However, I would like to comment on one of those
summer Shabbatim that really stands out for me.
On this particular Shabbat, we were privileged to have a post-B’nai Mitzvah student
read for the congregation. This student did not travel a smooth road to becoming a
B’nai Mitzvah; in fact, at one point the big day was postponed, and there were doubts
as to whether it would ever take place. Yet, after the big event had passed, this student still volunteered to read
from the Torah for us, and did so with great pride and poise.
As it happens, on this same Shabbat, another former student attended the service. This student had been
exceptional, and I was delighted to see him at Temple, not just to catch up with him, but also with the anticipation
that I could recruit him to join the Teen Torah program. However, when I discussed this possibility with him,
he said that he thought it was a good idea, but that he had forgotten how to read Hebrew and was too busy to
re-start the process. Despite my assurances that it would not be difficult for him and that I would gladly help, it
became apparent that it just was not going to happen at this particular time. I have no doubt that this student
will be immensely successful in his various pursuits, but, sadly, his synagogue skills will not be sustained.
I believe that this is a classic example of the importance of the Teen Torah program. Unfortunately, I can find
many examples of students “falling through the cracks” in our Temple over the past eight and a half years that
I have worked here, but I am hoping that this will change. Of course, there will be students who choose not to
take part in the program; this is up to them. Hopefully, they will connect with Judaism in other ways, by taking
advantage of different opportunities provided by the Temple and the general community. But I do encourage
every student to participate, and, should they choose to do so, they will receive guidance and support throughout
the preparation process, from me and/or Cantor Alpert. If you are interested in participating in this program

Honor Society. In addition to his studies, Shane plays
club soccer, has participated in two Triathlons, plays
piano, is President of Junior U.S.Y and was a member of
The Temple Beth Sholom Junior Ruach Ensemble.
For his Mitzvah Project, Shane helped collect groceries
for the JFSA for distribution to the needy throughout
Las Vegas.
