2004
Product Guide
F R O M T H E PR E S I D E NT
We're proud to present this year's edition of the Electrical Standards & Product Guide to more than 50,000 engineers, architects, specifiers, and buyers of electrical products. The standards in this issue represent the work of hundreds of volunteers dedicated to the manufacture of effective, safe electrical products The hundreds of manufacturers represented in ESPG 2004 make those products, products that keep our world in light and power, that drive our economies and our cultures. This last year has been an important year for energy in the United States. During the massive grid failure in August of 2003, 50 million people lost power, some for several days. Businesses lost billions of dollars. A comprehensive energy bill that NEMA helped formulate was held hostage to politics and failed to pass in the last legislative session, although new legislation was on the table in early 2004. Its passage notwithstanding, the bill spurred a much needed public debate on our electrical infrastructure and the nation's energy policies. This year's edition includes new standards that figure prominently in the flow and control of America's energy grid. For instance, the association released PE 1-2003, Uninterruptible Power SystemsSpecification and Performance Verification. The international standard provides manufacturers and other users a method for specifying the performance attributes of an uninterruptible power system and for verifying its performance against specifications. NEMA also released ANSI C12.20-2002, American National Standard for Electricity Meters0.2 and 0.5 Accuracy Classes. It establishes the physical aspects and acceptable performance criteria for electrical meters that measure and register electricity. We revised three standards on portable cells and batteries, which update safety information, instructions for use, and marking requirements for these devices. These standards rank among the most sophisticated battery standards in the world. Some of our most popular standards were also reissued in the last year, including MG 1, Motors and Generators and MW 1000, Magnet Wire. Fully revised for the first time since 1998, MG 1 provides more than 500 pages of manufacturing and performance data related to electric motors and generators and enables users to make the proper selection and application of these devices. MW 1000 presents all the standards for magnet wire in a single, convenient volume, including general requirements common to all types of magnet wire. MG 1 and MW 1000 were issued in both printed and CD editions. Several new releases are directly related to public safety. NEMA's Training Manual on Fire Alarm Systems is used to train thousands of electricians each year. The manual provides training text for the proper installation of fire alarm signaling systems. The association's popular NEMA 250, Enclosures for Electrical Equipment (1000 Volts Maximum), was revised for the first time since 1997. Enclosures provide 2

protection against access to hazardous electrical devices and protection from the environment. Among other revisions, a standard annex has been expanded to better explain the conversion of NEMA enclosure type ratings to IEC 60529 enclosure classification designations. The association also issued OS 1 and OS 2, standards governing the compatibility of metal and non-metallic outlet boxes with standardized wiring devices and conduit and cable systems. Some of NEMA's most high tech standards also were released in the past several months. Two updated standards related to diagnostic magnetic imaging (MRI), MS 3-2003, and MS 5-2003, provide specifications on the quality and accuracy of MRI devices. The specifications are accepted by regulatory bodies as tests for image uniformity, geometric distortion, and slice thickness, and may also be used for acceptance tests. TS 2-2003, Traffic Controller Assemblies with NTCIP Requirements, has been revised for the first time in five years. Developed as a design guide for certain traffic signaling equipment, it is intended to reduce hazards to people and property. It covers device communication over a data channel with unlimited capacity and the use of a high-speed data channel in order to reduce possible malfunction. The products listed in this edition of the guide are of the highest calibre. Manufactured with pride by the finest companies in the world, they provide for the compatible, safe, effective, efficient operation of electrical devices and systems the public depends upon. (See NEMA member company list.) All NEMA standards and all NEMA member company products in the 2004 edition can be found on our website, www.nema.org. We encourage you to visit the site and link to our member companies to learn how you can purchase the products you need. You may purchase NEMA standards by visiting Global Engineering Documents at www.global.ihs.com. We hope you will find the 2004 Electrical Standards & Product Guide to be a valuable and useful tool throughout the coming year. This index is a quick reference guide to all of the standards available from NEMA, both NEMA and ANSI standards. It notes the latest version available, the price, and the page number on which you will find the title and a short description of the document, as well as companion standards and notices of approval or adoption by other organizations. At least every five years, each NEMA standard is reviewed for timeliness, technical accuracy, and relevance. The dates of the reviews are published as part of the alpha-numeric standard identifier. Revisions published for NEMA standards are made available for holders of the base standard at a nominal price. The revision is automatically included in the base standard for future users and the price of the standard (base and revisions) is adjusted. When a NEMA standard is purchased through IHS/Global Engineering Documents, the customer will be sent notification of the standards revision.
