Why:
The power coming into any home is affected by many activities
and sources including switchgear activating, motors turning on and
off, equipment failing, quality of power supplied by the utility, and
unintended consequences such as lightning. All of these factors
compromise electrical equipment. SPDs are the first line of defense to
protect electronics.
Where:
SPD can be incorporated at point-of-use (i.e., surge strip), at a
receptacle, and throughout an entire home by mounting it in an electric
service panel board.
What:
Surge Strips: adds an additional level of support, and should be used
with other types of SPD protection, such as receptacle or whole house
Receptacle SPDs: plug-in sensitive equipment and electronics for
individual equipment protection
Whole House SPD: It is not enough to plug your computer or TV
into a surge-protected plug strip. A whole house SPD will protect
other electronic equipment such as microwaves, ovens, ranges,
refrigerators, light bulbs, smoke detectors, and lifesaving medical
equipment, as well as computers, TVs, and other personal devices.
Who:
NEMA supports the development of the SPD market and leads efforts
to educate the industry about the features and values of SPDs around
the country.
For more information on how to include SPDs when designing
and building, go to NEMASurge.com or call 703.841.3202.
