Nelson Civic Teatre Celebrates
Te Hustle is more than just a disco song from the 70s.
Tis month, its the frst birthday bash of the Nelson Civic
Teatre. Te Nelson Hustle celebrates flm, fun and com-
munity and runs February 20 to March 2. Te Nelson
Hustle features some of the hottest Best Picture Nom-
inees, a little gambling, the Oscar Awards ceremony live-
streamed on the big screen and a party of course. Te
Civic Teatres frst birthday and the Oscars is a perfect
combination, says Project Manager Roger Ley. Everyone
loves a party especially one that runs for a week. All
donations and proceeds during the Nelson Hustle will help
pay for upgrades to the concession, Ley explains, adding,
If youve ever seen our concession, youll know why.
Te fun begins with a week of flms, so flm lovers can
see some of the Best Picture nominees before the big day.
On the playlist are Broken Circle Breakdown (February
20), Philomena, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, American
Hustle and Ernest and Celestine running February 26 to
March 2. Gamblers can guess the Oscar-winners on ballot
forms in the lobby to win prizes.
On Saturday, March 1 the Civic goes into full 70s party
mode in Oscar fashion, with Te Nelson Hustles red car-
pet event. Stars and limousines, music, hors doeuvres,
sparkly refreshments, prizes for 70s glam costumes and
a special screening of Oscar contender American Hustle
are among the highlights. (Sorry, no minors at this one.)
Tis unforgettable fundraising evening is hosted by
Roger Ley and the fabulous Lisel Forst, or her alter-ego,
whoever that may be. Its great to celebrate how far weve
come. Its also great to celebrate where were going, says Ley,
explaining that the Civic Teatre has an approved grant that
will match $30,000 of community donations for the essential
concession upgrades.
Te fnal fundraising tally will be revealed at a live, satel-
lite-feed Oscar broadcast on Sunday, March 2 from 4 to 7
pm at the theatre, where the local guess-the-Oscar winners
will also be revealed and last-minute donations accepted.
Of course, everyones a winner in this hustle, says Ley.
For the full schedule go to www.civictheatre.ca.

Newfoundland Comes To Kaslo!
Tursday, February 27 at 7:30 pm at Te Langham, get
ready to steal yourselves away to another world. Forget
the Fortis bill, forget the cancelled fights at Castlegar.
Tink about expanding your soul while listening to this
trio coming all the way from Newfoundland to our little
hamlet, Kaslo. Get ready to enjoy beautiful harmonies
and energetic merry music making with the likes of
THE ONCE. Advance tickets are only $15 at Willow
Home Boutique and Sunnyside Naturals. Tickets at the
door will be $18 (if there are any lef!)
From their beginnings as three actors who also loved
to sing together, THE ONCE has embraced a diferent
vision of Newfoundland music. Teir sounds do not
come from the noisy pubs and dockside taverns that
fuel so much of the islands energy. Instead, their music
comes from a quieter and more thoughtful place. Hope
and tragedy are intertwined in their music, whether
they are singing an old lament from World War I, ori-
ginal songs that speak of love defeated, or tasteful songs
from the artists whose music inspires them. Whether
they keep it a cappella, or pile on layers of accordion,
bouzouki, mandolin and guitar, each song is a treat. As
a trio, the band has kept it uncomplicated, depending
on the power of their voices and acoustic instruments.
Lead singer Geraldine Hollett, has an instrument of
rare power; she is a singer who can still a noisy room,
so expressive she can tell a novel-length story with a
few words. Hollett is accompanied by Phil Churchill
and Andrew Dale on guitar, mandolin, fddle and bou-
zouki. Together they create a perfect blend of voice and
melody. Sometimes melancholy, sometimes funny, al-
ways poignant,THE ONCE sound like nothing else that
has ever come from Newfoundland and were thrilled
to have them grace our humble little stage at the Lang-
ham. Hope to see you all there.

Contraption Contest Winners
Kootenay kids will power the future with electric goo,
four-legged charging stations and energized underwear.
Congratulations to the 2013 Kootenay Contraption Con-
test winners.
Imagine! Youve just woken up in the morning to
pre-programmed nature sounds and look out into the vast
mountainous view on your surround screen walls. Be-
fore pulling on your underwear, you unplug your micro
communications device from your waistband, and check
on the electric goo levels of your in-home power storage
system. Before settling in for breakfast, you take Fido for
a quick jog around the neighbourhood to power up his
wearable charging station just long enough to power
your cofeemaker. Ahh, such is life in 2050, powered by
the dreams and imagination of Kootenay kids in 2013.
Could such a future be awaiting us? If the 2013 Kootenay
Contraption Contest is any indication, the contest winners

Think you can retire early and get out of
paying your ex? Think again.
Say a couple divorces and the court or-
ders monthly spousal support for the ex-
wife. Later, the husband retires early and
his income drops or stops altogether. Can
he get out of his support obligation?
Highly unlikely, especially if hes simply
trying to avoid paying future support.
Perhaps if an early retirement package or
forced relocation are his only alternative,
or there are medical or other valid rea-
sons, there will be a reduction. But even
thats not a sure thing. It all depends on
the circumstances.
Consider this recent case. Walter and
Claire (all names changed) divorced in
2008 after being married 35 years. Wal-
ter, always the main family breadwin-
ner, worked in the forest industry and
earned about $67,000 a year at the time
of the divorce. After the divorce, he was
ordered to pay Claire $1,750 a month
in spousal support. He and Claire also
agreed to split his company pension
she would get 42% of those payments
once they started.
When the New Westminster mill where
he worked was shuttered, Walter moved
to work at the companys mill on Van-
couver Island. He applied for his pension
starting three months after the spousal
support order so he and Claire collected
their shares from September, 2008. But
he kept working for his company for an-
other four years, making his support pay-
ments along the way. By 2011 his annual
income was about $80,000.
But his job at the new mill became a
problem. He ended up having to work
10-12 hours fve days a week, plus some-
times on evenings and weekends. On top
of that he was on call 24 hours a day,
and he usually had to go to the mill week-
ly for some emergency. He couldnt even
plan trips or days off. All this affected his
home life (he had remarried).
Walter decided to quit and look for an-
other job (four years after getting di-
vorced). But though he was experienced
and qualifed, he couldn`t fnd compa-
rable work. He took an out-of-province
job briefy, but that didn`t pay enough. So
he returned to his home on Vancouver Is-
land. But now he could only get work oc-
casionally, when called in by his former
employer, for $38/hour.
In the late fall of 2012, Walter applied to
cancel or cut down his support obligation
to Claire. When his case went to court in
2013, he was almost 63, and Claire was
close to 60.
For a support order to be changed, there
must be a material change in the former
spouses means, needs or circumstances.
And the BC Supreme Court decided that
such a change, which was unforeseen,
substantial and continuing, had occurred
here. Though Walters quitting due to
overwork was voluntary and not wise
(without other guaranteed work), he was
trying to fnd other work and didn`t do it
to get out of paying Claire.
Walter was now only able to earn about
$25,000 a year. But Claire still needed
support. She had limited work experi-
ence and, despite trying, hadnt been able
to get a job after the divorce.
Walters support payment to Claire was
therefore cut back to $1,000 per month.

KAST-GLOWS (Grow-

wrapped up the 2013 Koo-

which posed the follow-
ing challenge to Koote-
nay Boundary students:
Imagine the year is 2050.
Wind and solar energy are
plentiful, but how will we
store that energy to make it
more useful?
Kids aged six to thirteen in
Grades one to eight submit-
ted descriptive illustrations
with their solutions. Judges
from School District 20, For-
tisBC and KAST reviewed
the many creative submis-
sions, and are pleased to an-
nounce the winners:
Quinlan, a Grade 3 stu-
dent from Kinnaird Ele-
mentary in Castlegar, was
the grand prize winner of
a brand new iPad Air for
his innovation. Quinlans
solution captures the suns
energy through solar pan-
els and transfers it in a spe-
cial bioluminescent jelly.
Tat jelly runs through a
specially designed strainer
which extracts the energy
from the jelly. Tat energy
is then fed through a pipe
to dispense it as needed.
Winners at each grade
level were also selected and
won a pizza party for their

current models of development.
Facilitated by Grahame Russell, co-director of Rights
Action, the group will travel by van to remote areas im-
pacted by multinational mining companies including
Mayan Qeqchi communities in eastern Guatemala im-

Family Day Fishing Derby
Huge Success
In spite of the cold weather Kootenay Lake saw about
600 fsher people brave the elements to take part in the

420 participants came from outside the Kootenay region,
adding a boon to the local tourism hospitality scene dur-
ing a traditionally slow time.

Friends Of Nelson Elders
Who are the Friends of Nelson Elders? Saturday, Feb-
ruary 22 is your opportunity to learn all about this
non-proft organization. Come to the Nelson Public Li-
brary between 10 am and 6 pm. Well be there to answer
your questions, accept new members, and to provide ap-
plication forms for grants to organizations and activities
that meet our criteria.
Now in its ninth year, FONEs mandate is to provide
funding for activities and equipment that enhance the
wellbeing of seniors in our community. Last year, we pro-
vided some $15,000 to the Womens Centre, Mountain
Lakes, Jubilee Manor, the Nelson Library, and the Seniors
Coordinating Centre for a variety of programs.
Canada Post Town Hall Meeting
Changes to Canada Post: A company in peril? Or a sell
of, and an ecological back step?
An open invite to a Town Hall about changes to your
Canada Post, Tuesday, February 18, 7 pm at Hume School
310 Nelson Avenue, Nelson.
In a nutshell, Canada Post Corporation, CPC, plans to
remain proftable by replacing post of ces with postal
kiosks. Staf ng these with lower wage part time workers
instead of full time, employment. CPC plans on replacing
letter carriers, who deliver 500 to 600 addresses by foot,
with a system where the same 600 people would now pot-
entially drive up to a box that the mail carrier also drives
too. A lot of driving that does not exist right now.
Te post is changing, that is for sure. A letter carrier
used to handle fve parcels per day, now that number is
closer to twenty. Tis when only a small percent of us
are shopping online (so far). Most of us get four bills and
two bank statements per month. If you have gone online
for these, there is a good chance you are shopping online
also. Canada Post will trade a few $.85 stamps for a par-
cel and come away the winner every time. CPC made a
proft of $98 million in 2013, and have
made millions in proft yearly since
1997, $281 million in 2009 alone.
Te Christmas volumes smashed
a record in 2012 and smashed that
again in 2013. Te delivery system
has already been streamlined. CPC
bought new machines three years ago
and are lengthening delivery routes
everywhere. Fewer workers delivering
more mail is already in place in all
large centres.
As citizens, we are changing light
bulbs and buying expensive eco ap-
pliances to do our part to save the
world. It costs a little more but it is
worth it. Yet a CEO in Ottawa is about
to boost proft by putting thousands
of workers in vehicles and giving up
to fve million Canadians a new rea-
son to drive. We should be going to
more doors not fewer. Save the world
is the current battle cry. It is a system
the seniors of today paid for in their
younger days. A system that gets your
mother or friend an envelope full of love for under a buck,
while profting over $100 million every year. Our youth
are being denied decent jobs by more and more compan-
ies. Real jobs are disappearing. Our Government would
do well to support its youth, its seniors, and its commun-
ities. Even if only the most minimal proft can be made.
Come to our town hall. We invited Canada Post.
Pine Cone Feeder Recipe
Tis is the recipe that was used in an activity booth at
the Winter In Te Forest Festival in Kaslo. Tis is an old
family recipe given to me many years ago by a friends
mom. She called it Chickadee Cupcakes and she would
put it in a mesh net and hang from the trees.
Many people asked for the recipe so here it is.
3
1
2 cups oatmeal
4 cups of water
1 lb ground suet (use suet blocks)
1 jar peanut butter (12 oz)
3
1
2 cups cornmeal
3
1
2 cups cream of wheat
Cook oatmeal in water for 2 minutes. Remove from heat
Add suet and peanut butter until melted.
Add corn meal and cream of wheat. Cool.
Tis mixture can be pushed into pine cones, hung in
mesh bags or pressed into tree bark. Seeds may also be add-
ed to the mixture if you wish. Te birds will love you for it!!

At the end of 2009 Julie Ewashen received an email from
a nephew in New Zealand. Attached were photographs of
a polar bear playing with an Alaskan husky sled dog.
Te photographs were taken by an internationally
famous wildlife photographer, Norbert Rosing. Rosing is
from Germany. He had come to Churchill, Manitoba, to
research polar bears.
Julie thought the world should know about this extra-
ordinary friendship. What about a childrens story? Tis
time she would follow through and have it published.
Kids like pictures. Tese had come from the internet.
Maybe there would be more there. Tere were. Hundreds.
But some of the best were copyright and unafordable.
What about Nadine Riehl? She had painted some great
murals in Creston Valley where we both live. A story book
would require much smaller pictures than murals. Na-
dine agreed to work with her. A grant towards the cost of
illustrations was obtained from the ColumbiaKootenay
Cultural Alliance via the Creston and District Commun-
ity Arts Council. Many people have commented on the
beauty of these colourful illustrations.
On a mild December day in 2013 the books arrived
from Friesen Press. It was Friday the thirteenth. Sales
were good in the East Kootenay. Now it is time to head
to West Kootenay. On Saturday, February 22 from noon
to 4 pm Julie will be signing books at Coles on Lakeshore
Drive, Nelson. Hope to see you there.
For more information on the book, contact Julie Ewashen,
405 11 Ave. S. Creston, BC V0B 1G3. 250-428-7097.

To Stop Bullying

problem in an evening of readings by authors Jane Byers,

youth writers from LV Rogers High School, on Tuesday,

proceeds to beneft the Nelson and District Youth Centre.

Honeybees Essential To
Crop Production
Take a look at these fve fascinating facts about Canadas
robust honeybee industry:
Fact #1: As pollinators, bees are vital to our food chain.
Honeybees are responsible for pollinating a third of the
food we eat.
Fact #2: Bee colonies in Canada have increased by 24 per
cent since 2008. In 2013, we had 8,483 beekeepers and
672,094 colonies. Over 75 of those colonies reside in
Western Canada.
Fact #3: Bees are vitally important to the sustainability
of our agriculture by contributing nearly $2 billion to
crop pollination in this country alone.
Fact #4: More than half the bee colonies in Canada
(300,000) contribute annually to the pollination of
canola.
Fact #5: Approximately 80,000 colonies provide pollin-
ation services to the Canadian hybrid seed canola in-
dustry; 35,000 colonies are used to pollinate blueber-
ries; and 15,000 colonies are used to pollinate apples.
