LKR40.0. With the sound earning release, LIOC traded actively on-board supported by a single 250mn shares transaction at LKR39.5. The counter closed at LKR39.0 with a gain of 2.6%. Distilleries, Vidullanka and Textured Jersey Lanka too depicted off-board interest during the day. Heavy on-board participation in JKH warrants: John Keells Holdings Warrants displayed active on-board interest during the day where JKH Warrant 0023 topped the on-board turnover and ended at LKR65.1 with a dip of 2.8%. JKH Warrant 0022 also had some on-board participation and closed at LKR63.2 with a dip of 1.9%. Retail interest on TFC.X and EXPO: Retail interest was seen in The Finance Non-Voting and Expolanka Holdings. EXPO denoted some large on-board trades, the largest being the two transactions aggregating to 1.1mn shares which were picked at LKR9.0. The counter ended at LKR9.1 with a gain of 1.1%.

Balance of Payments records $ 991 m surplus in 2013 Exports up 6.3% to $ 10.38 b; imports down by 6% to $ 17.9 b; trade deficit contracts by 19% to $ 7.6 b. The Central Bank said yesterday that the countrys overall Balance of Payments (BOP) is estimated to have recorded a surplus of $ 991 million during 2013, significantly surpassing the initial estimates for the year. This was achieved despite the volatility in international financial markets, which particularly affected emerging market economies in the region, the Central Bank said. [Source: www.ft.lk] Sri Lanka bank consolidation beneficial: Fitch Sri Lanka's plan to consolidate banks, could bring long term benefits and greater system stability, Fitch Ratings said. The consolidation master plan envisaged the creation of bigger banks, with an asset base of over 1,000 million rupees. "The government intends these institutions to be able to eventually establish a regional presence and improve overall access to funds."There was prospect of mergers of other seven banks that did not meet the threshold. If successfully implanted with Basle III standards, the international standing of banks would be boosted, Fitch said. [Source: www.lbo.lk] Rupee dips 2.7% against dollar; appreciates against Yen, Indian Rupee and Aussie dollar As at end 2013, the rupee depreciated modestly by 2.7% against the US dollar, 6.8% against the euro and 4.7% against the pound sterling, the Central Bank said yesterday. At the same time, the rupee appreciated significantly against the Japanese yen by 18.8%, the Indian rupee by 10.2% and the Australian dollar by 13.3%. So far during 2014, the rupee has remained relatively stable against the US dollar at around same levels recorded at the end of 2013. [Source: www.lbo.lk] Sri Lanka's Altair residential tower to be built by Shapoorji Pallonji A 68-storey lakefront apartment tower tipped to be tallest residential tower in South Asia when completed in 2017 will be built by Shapoorji Pollonji International, a Dubai based construction firm, its promoters said. The 'Altair' luxury condominium project by the Beira lake in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo will be 240 metres tall and is made up of a 68-storey vertical tower and a leaning 63-storey tower. Greece posts wider primary budget surplus in January Greece's central government posted a primary budget surplus of 811 million euros ($1.1 billion) in January compared to a surplus of 415 million euros in the same period last year, deputy finance minister Christos Staikouras said on Tuesday. The figure excludes social security organizations and local administration budgets.

Blankfein said emerging markets are better able to weather an investor retreat now than in 1998, when currency turmoil spread and forced international bailouts. There were a lot of things in 98 that dont exist now, Blankfein, 59, said in an interview today with Bloomberg Televisions John Dawson in Hong Kong while attending the Goldman Sachs Global Macro conference.
