Parent Information Evenings:
Vancouver Technical Secondary School Grade 8 Program (English) Grade 7 English program students and their parents are reminded about the grade 8 program information night tonight, January 9th at 6:30 pm in Van Tech's auditorium at 2600 E. Broadway. Secord School Programs: The registration deadline for all 2014 programs is January 31st! Please take note and help us get word out French Immersion Kindergarten and Grade One: Parents who are interested in registering their child(ren) for French Immersion kindergarten or grade one at Secord next year are invited to an information session on Wednesday, January 15 at 7 pm. Childminding is not provided.
Parents who have older children already in French Immersion do not have to attend this meeting. You are, however, reminded that, in order to receive sibling priority, you must first register at your in-catchment English school and then apply on-line between January 10-31 for your child to attend French Immersion.

2015 Quebec Exchange Project Meeting
Students currently in Melissa Bruntlett Pippa Kouwenhoven grade 6 French Immersion and their District Parent parents are invited and Representative Jen Anderson encouraged to attend an important meeting to introduce the Quebec Exchange project we hope to offer the students in their grade 7 year. Goals of the project, costs, parents and student roles and responsibilities and expectations, dates, etc will be discussed. Families will be asked to indicate this year their intention to have their child participate so we may begin the extensive planning, organizing and fundraising process. The meeting is on Thursday, January 16, 7pm, basement lunchroom.
School of Groove
With our thanks to the PAC for their initiative and financial support, we have brought in School of Groove, a 3-week world music program that all our students are participating in. Led by Michelle Cormier, Robin Layne and their team, students are learning the roots and rhythms of the music of Cuba, Brazil and West Africa. They learn about other cultures, gain a basic understanding of musical principles and develop confidence through performing and collaborating with their peers. Some of the vocal and dance traditions from these regions are also being explored. Sharing Assembly: The students will share what they learned in two school assemblies on Friday, January 24 and parents and guests are invited. 9:15-10:30am: Divisions 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24, 25 11:00am-12:10pm: Divisions 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 23, 26
Late French Immersion Grade 6: Current English program Grade 5 students interested in learning French the immersion way next year and their parents are invited to an information session at Secord School on Wednesday, January 15 at 7 pm. English Kindergarten: Parents who are interested in registering their child(ren) for English kindergarten or grade one at Secord next year are invited to a question/answer opportunity and school tour on Thursday, January 16 at 7 pm.
Staffing Update
In the December newsletter, we announced a staffing change for January. The New Year, however, brings even more: Our congratulations and very best wishes go to 2 staff members who will be leaving us very soon for maternity leaves: Teacher Jessica Rowe and Office Assistant Sandra Kovaltsenko. At this time, we do not know who will be replacing them in their roles. Teacher Barb McDougall leaves us for some time on a health leave. She wishes to extend
January is Raven Month

As part of our Spirit/House program, January is Raven Appreciation Month. The Raven stands for Strength in Wisdom and their house colour is red. Raven Celebration Day is January 24: Wear something red and win one point for your house.
Next month: Wear a heart day on Valentines Day, February 14th.
Winter Secord After School Programs

Our super Van Tech Community Schools Team has put together another season and variety of great after school activities for our kids. Brochures were given to the kids this week to bring home, other copies are available just inside the main doors to the school. Registration is on from now to January 15th and completed registration forms with payment can be dropped off at the main office. All programs begin in the small gym at 3pm, and then move to the programspecific room. Programs end and kids can be picked up in the main foyer at 4:30pm. Welcome our new Programmer, Haley Wells; thanks go to Sarah for all her work with the kids last year!

Welcome to our guests

Being such a great school, it is no wonder we receive so many special guests to our school, and this month will welcome many, many guests. Please welcome: Educators from Shenzhen province in China who will be visiting classes in our English program on January 15 and 17 as part of an educational tour to Canada. Barb Findlay and her Project Chef team as they teach students in divisions 9 and 11F about safe cooking and healthy eating. Superintendent of Schools Steve Cardwell will be visiting on Monday, January 27 to connect with our students and staff and see our wonderful programs. Welcome to Secord, Mr Cardwell.
Flu Season
Tis (still) the season for giving Help prevent the spread of the flu. Join the school in encouraging your child to wash their hands with soap well (have them sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star while they wash) and often, especially before they eat. If your child is showing signs of the flu, please keep them at home and let the school know so we can track the number of cases. Currently, we have no large numbers of flu cases at school, but wed like to keep it that way.
Mandarin Bilingual Program

Grade 4 at Jamieson Elementary. Students learn Mandarin in an effective and challenging way! Registration for the Mandarin Bilingual Program, Grade 4 ends on January 31st. Applications and information for the program are available in the office. Further information regarding the program is available on the schools website http://go.vsb.bc.ca/schools/Jamieson and the VSB website www.vsb.bc.ca . Jamiesons information evening is on January 15th from 7:00-8:00 pm in the library.
