ED 9222 VIBRATION ANALYSIS AND CONTROL (Common to M.E. Computer Aided Design)
State the orthogonality principle. Write the orthogonality principle for two-degrees of freedom system. List the two types of coupling action present in a vibrating system. What are they due to? Write the equations of motion of a multi degree of freedom system in matrix form using (a) the flexibility matrix and (b) the stiffness matrix How does a continuous system differ from a discrete system in the nature of its equation of motion?

PART B (5 16 = 80 Marks) 11. (a) A centrifugal fan weighs 450 N and has a rotating unbalance of 2.25 Nm. When dampers with damping factor 0.2 are used, specify the springs for mounting such that only 10% of the unbalance force is transmitted to the floor. Also, determine the magnitude of the transmitted force. The fan runs at a constant speed of 1000 rpm. Or (b)

Derive the frequency equation of the transverse vibration of a beam of length L with one end built-in and the other end simply supported. A 100 kg turbine operates at 2000 rpm. What percent isolation is achieved if the turbine is mounted on four identical springs in parallel, each of stiffness 300 N/mm? What can be done to the turbine to achieve 81% isolation if the same mounting system is used?

A beam mounted rotary fan has a natural frequency, which coincided with the speed of operation of 1200 rpm. The rotor of the fan has an unbalance of 150 N mm. It is proposed to attach an absorber so that the resulting fundamental natural frequency is 1080 cpm. If the weight of the fan housing is 2 kN, determine the weight and stiffness of the absorber system. Also, find the amplitude of the absorber mass.
