INTRODUCTION
MODULE DESCRIPTION Pharmacology by definition is the interaction of chemical substances with biological systems. The subject has its foundation in physiology and closely related to biochemistry and biophysics. It is directly applicable to medicine and therapeutics and extending to other disciplines such as environmental and pollution control. Pharmacology can be divided into such areas as biochemical and molecular pharmacology, neuro-pharmacology and clinical pharmacology. The course offered in the Doctor of Medical Dentistry is General Pharmacology and includes the major areas of Pharmacology. The format for discussion of pharmacology will be as follows: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) 10) 11) Review of the relevant anatomy and physiology Pathophysiology of the organs and system involved Drug origin and classification Chemistry & important pharmacokinetics Mechanism of action Indications & Therapeutic effects Important side effects and adverse effects Contraindications & Cautions Clinically significant interactions Important patient instructions related to the drug Dental implications

LECTURES & LABORATORY SESSIONS Lectures will be held on Tuesdays 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. and Fridays 10:00 12:00 noon. Laboratory/Tutorial sessions will be on Tuesdays 4:00-7:00 p.m. These sessions will take the form of: 1) Experiments 2) Video tape sessions 2) Questions and answers 3) Case studies 4) Demonstrations ASSESSMENTS FOUR semester evaluations will be given. Two tests (one hour in duration) a Term Paper and laboratory exercises Due date for the essay is October 22. The essay should not exceed (fifteen)

Term Paper J.D is a 57 year old man who has been diagnosed with cancer, comes in for dental work due to problems developed during chemotherapy. a) Describe the possible oral complications related to cancer treatment (both radiation and chemotherapy) (20 marks) b) Describe the patients who may be at risk for the development of oral complications and identify some of the drugs which may be implicated. (5 marks) c) For three of these drugs discuss the i) Mechanism of action ii) Side effects iii) Contraindications (3 x 10 marks) d) Discuss the dentists approach for the management of a patient undergoing cancer treatment. (15 marks)

General Instructions Students are required to work in groups of three. The contribution of each participant should be clearly stated at the end of the essay. This assignment should be typewritten on 8 x 11 white sheets ensuring that the text is double-spaced. Use one side of the paper only leaving a 1 margin at each side and bottom of the page, each page must be numbered. The project should be no more than 10 pages of text. Use APA (American Psychological Association) latest edition for referencing.
